00:00hi and welcome back to our course on piping design in this lecture we will
00:13learn about pipe fittings their functions materials classification
00:18selection criteria and applications pipe fittings are defined as the piping
00:28components that help in pipe routing for directional changes size changes and
00:34branch connections piping elbows piping reducers T connections OLED
00:41connections caps crosses etc are pipe fittings and are widely used in both
00:48piping and plumbing industries different pipe fittings serve different
00:56functions as per layout or process requirements however note that if a pipe
01:03or a pipeline is bent at a pipe fabrication shop to change the
01:09direction it is not a pipe fitting pipe fittings are manufactured as separate
01:15items and produced separately pipe fittings are connected to piping using
01:22various end connections functions of pipe fittings one is directional
01:29changes elbow fittings are used to change the direction of flow which is
01:35essentially for routing pipes around obstacles or creating complex pipe
01:41layouts second is size changes reducers are essential for connecting pipes of
01:48different sizes within a system allowing for a seamless flow transition flow
01:56control walls can be integrated into fittings to regulate or control the flow of
02:03fluids or gases pressure drop pressure relief walls can be incorporated into
02:12fittings to prevent over pressurization in a system maintenance and repair fittings like unions and couplings assist easy disconnection and reconnection of pipes making maintenance and repairs more convenient
02:31leak prevention properly installed and sealed pipe fittings ensure a leak-free system
02:40which is critical for safety environmental protection and cost-effectiveness flow
02:49optimization fittings enable the design of efficient pipe networks that minimize friction and pressure drops improving the
03:00overall systems performance flexibility pipe fittings allow for the
03:08connection of pipes made from different materials helpful in a wide range of
03:13applications safety pipe fittings when used in combination with other safety
03:21measures help prevent accidents and injuries in industries that depend on
03:26piping arrangements maintenance fittings assist easy maintenance and repairs using
03:34downtime and related costs now let's talk about pipe fitting material the
03:43choice of pipe fitting material depends on several factors including the type of
03:49fluid being transported environmental conditions and costs pipe fittings are made of
03:56same material as the pipe here is a list of different materials used for pipe fittings
04:04common materials used for pipe fittings are stainless steel brass copper PVC and various
04:11types of plastics stainless steel fittings are corrosion resistant and suitable for tough
04:18environments while PVC fittings are light in weight and good for water-based
04:24applications pipe fittings come in a variety of materials shapes and sizes each designated to suit specific
04:36applications depending upon the use of pipe fittings they can be classified as pipe fitting
04:45types to extend or terminate pipe runs which include couplings adapters unions caps and plugs
04:54plugs second pipe fittings for directional change that is elbows bends t connections and cross pipe fittings to
05:07connect two or more pipes are t's cross side inlet elbows and y's pipe fittings for
05:17directional change include reducers bushings coupling and reducing t pipe fittings for flow control are valves
05:30various factors need to be considered for selecting proper pipe fittings such as material for construction pipe fitting material must be compatible with the service and temperature
05:43normally the material selected is same as the pipe
05:48end connection types the buyer must be aware of the end connection types before purchasing any pipe fitting
05:59type of pipe fitting pipe fittings are also identified by the type of fitting like threaded or slip male or female so it is the buyer's responsibility to
06:13choose the correct pipe fitting material pipe fitting size the size of the fitting must be known prior to the selection of the fitting
06:26normally the outer diameter or the inner diameter of the connecting pipe decides the pipe fitting size schedule or thickness
06:39pipe fittings are also available at various thickness ranges similar to the pipe so before pipe fitting selection the thickness must be ensured
06:51pressure rating internal pressure is also an important factor for proper pipe fitting selection
07:02Pipe fitting standards and codes various codes and standards are available for pipe fittings the buyer should select the correct one before placing the order for example
07:16ASME ASTM DIN BSP MSS ISO etc are certain standards assigned to pipe fittings and those standards govern their design and use
07:30Applications of pipe fittings
07:34Pipe fittings play an important role in the proper functioning of pipes and tubes in various applications
07:42Pipe fittings are highly popular and widely used in the following industries
07:48Refinery chemical and petrochemical industries
07:50Refinery chemical and petrochemical industries
07:52Municipal corporation works
07:54Power
07:56Oil and gas
07:58Food, beverage and dairy
08:00Process instrumentation
08:02Pulp and paper
08:04Semiconductor
08:06Steel, marine and dredging
08:08Irrigation, residential and sanitation
08:10Road and highway construction
08:12Ventilation etc
08:14Highway construction
08:16Ventilation etc
08:20That was all about pipe fittings
08:22In the next lecture we will learn in detail about each pipe fitting, their types and uses
08:30Thanks for watching this lecture. See you in the next one
