Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has proposed a gradual annexation of the Gaza Strip if Hamas doesn’t disarm — a move that Palestinians are calling “genocide.”
During a press conference, Smotrich laid out a four-week strategy: first, Palestinians would be pushed south, followed by an Israeli blockade on Gaza’s northern and central regions, culminating in total annexation. “We can make this happen in three to four months,” he stated, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to implement the plan “right away.”
This announcement comes as Israeli forces advance further into Gaza City, displacing nearly a million Palestinians. At the same time, the area is grappling with a dire humanitarian crisis: food, water, and medical supplies are blocked, and the United Nations warns that famine is already a reality.
“People are dying of hunger,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “Families are being torn apart, pregnant women are facing unimaginable dangers, and Gaza’s essential services — food, water, healthcare — have been dismantled.”
Hamas has vehemently condemned Smotrich’s comments, labeling them “an official call to exterminate our people” and asserting that Israel’s actions are not just military operations but “a project of genocide and mass displacement.”
Smotrich, a long-time advocate for illegal settlements in the West Bank, has also pushed for the re-establishment of Israeli settlements in Gaza, which were dismantled in 2005. His position reflects increasing pressure from far-right members of Netanyahu’s coalition, who have threatened to bring down the government if a peace agreement is reached.
Netanyahu has refrained from making direct comments but has hinted in the past that Israel might pursue full control of Gaza after the conflict. Meanwhile, global outrage is growing as the humanitarian crisis deepens, with famine, forced displacements, and ongoing bombardments sparking international demands for accountability.
