On "Forbes Newsroom", HarrisX Founder and CEO Dritan Nesho spoke about voters' support for President Trump's efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Transcript
00:00So let's now set our sights on some international conflicts.
00:04The war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the war between Israel and Hamas, both happened
00:09or started, rather, while President Biden was in office.
00:12And on the campaign trail, President Trump said they wouldn't have started under me,
00:16and I will be able to quickly wrap them up.
00:19They have not been wrapped up yet, but first, let's start with the war between Russia and
00:23Ukraine, because earlier this month, President Trump hosted separate meetings with the leaders
00:28of both countries, Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky, and the
00:32goal of that meeting was to have some, or those meetings, rather, it was to have some sort
00:37of ceasefire deal, and a peace agreement was not reached then.
00:41What do voters think about President Trump's handling of this conflict?
00:46Well, voters are essentially saying that there needs to be a strategy behind the efforts that
00:53the administration is undertaking.
00:54So when you ask them, do you support Trump's efforts to end the war in Ukraine, 66% say
01:02yes.
01:03And they are largely supportive of what he's doing.
01:09And we even ask, do you think that President Biden could have pulled off these meetings with
01:14world leaders, whether it was with Putin or with the Europeans or not?
01:19And 60% say that Biden was not capable, and Trump is bringing new energy to the effort.
01:27At the same time, 60% think that the meeting with Putin was unsuccessful, precisely because
01:32there is no roadmap coming out of that meeting.
01:38And ironically, voters think that Trump was much more successful at, you know, unifying
01:46the Europeans and getting them aligned than he has been with Putin.
01:52Ultimately, what is at play here is that most Americans do not believe that Putin genuinely
02:00wants to end the war, whereas at the same time, they believe that the Ukrainians do genuinely
02:07want to end the war.
02:08And because of that, two-thirds, 67%, say that the U.S. should continue to provide weaponry
02:16and impose sanctions, so provide weaponry to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia.
02:2269% support direct security guarantees for Kiev.
02:28And really, we've been asking a hard question, which is, you know, which relationship is more
02:35valuable to the United States.
02:3869% believe that the relationship with Ukraine, which has offered 50-50 profit share in terms
02:46of trillions of dollars in mineral wealth to the United States and is keeping Russian aggression
02:51in Europe at bay through its military courage and ingenuity.
02:5669% believe that that relationship is more valuable than the relationship with Russia,
03:02which they view as a nuclear power and as a possible counterweight to China.
03:06And obviously, there's a lot that Russia could do with the United States and for the United States.
03:12So I think that the public wants a strategy.
03:16The public wants a roadmap.
03:18They have a high trust in the Ukrainians, low trust in Vladimir Putin and the Russians.
03:26And they like the energy that Trump has brought to try to reach a deal and to stop the bloodshed.
03:34But frankly, they don't quite know where the United States wants to take this.
03:39And they are, by and large, firmly in the Ukrainian side or in support of the Ukrainian side.
03:47Whether they are Republicans, Democrats or Independents.
03:51And it will be interesting to see what the administration does with this information.
