00:00The Hidden Truth of Jupiter
00:01A discovery that changes everything for decades
00:05Scientists have tried to unravel the mysteries of Jupiter
00:08The largest planet in our solar system
00:11For a long time, one of the most popular theories
00:15Suggested that its core had formed after a colossal collision with another planet
00:20An event of such magnitude that it would have completely mixed its interior
00:24But now, new research has turned that idea on its head
00:28A study published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
00:34Has revealed the true story behind Jupiter's core
00:37And it's much more gradual than previously thought
00:40The team of researchers discovered that Jupiter's core doesn't have a defined boundary
00:45But instead, mixes slowly with the surrounding gas layers
00:49This structure is known as a dilute core
00:52This finding was actually one of the first surprises given to us by NASA's Juno probe
00:59To test the impact theory, scientists from Durham University
01:03In collaboration with NASA and the University of Oslo
01:07Used advanced supercomputer simulations
01:10The results were conclusive
01:12None of the simulations, not even under the most extreme conditions
01:17Managed to produce a dilute core
01:19Instead, the dense material displaced by the impact would quickly resettle
01:24Creating a defined boundary, not the gradual transition we observe today
01:29As Dr. Thomas Sandnes, the study's lead author noted
01:33Such an impact would literally shake the planet to its core
01:37But not in the way needed to explain what we see today
01:41But the evidence doesn't stop there
01:43Recently, it has been discovered that Saturn, our other gas giant
01:48Also possesses a dilute core
01:51This data strengthens the idea that these structures are not the result of rare and catastrophic events
01:57But instead, form naturally during a planet's long and complex growth process
02:03This discovery not only rewrites our story about the planets in our solar system
02:08But also has profound implications for the formation of the thousands of Jupiter-sized exoplanets
02:14That have been found around other stars
02:16If dilute cores are the norm and not the exception
02:20It's likely that most, if not all
02:22All of these distant worlds have equally complex interiors
02:26It's fascinating how technology and simulations continue to refine our understanding of the universe
