Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today, we're counting down art picks for the most gruesome deaths
00:13in DC movies.
00:14We'll be getting into spoilers for various projects so consider this your warning.
00:2620.
00:27Malik Ali
00:28Superman is one of the strongest superheroes around, but even he needs the help of ordinary
00:33people every now and then.
00:35When he was injured by the metahuman The Hammer of Baravia, Malik Ali is who came to his rescue.
00:40Unfortunately, that made him a target for Lex Luthor.
00:43Are you alright, Superman?
00:44Ali, you gotta get out of here.
00:45It's not safe.
00:46You've saved us so many times.
00:48Now it's our turn.
00:49After imprisoning Superman in a special pocket dimension, Lex rounded Malik up too.
00:53Not long after, Lex put a gun to Malik's head and pulled the trigger, executing the citizen
00:58in front of Superman.
00:59Who are you working with here on Earth?
01:02This was a sadistic display of cruelty from Lex and a jarring shift in the movie's tone.
01:07It's an optimistic film overall, but moments like this brought a haunting amount of darkness
01:12to the table.
01:2119.
01:22The Board of Directors
01:23Shazam
01:24Although Shazam is a family-friendly pseudo-Christmas comedy, the villain almost feels like he should
01:31be in a different movie. After gaining immense power from the Seven Deadly Sins,
01:36Dr. Sivana pays a visit to the father and brother who emotionally tormented him.
01:4120.
01:57His brother actually gets off relatively easy, getting tossed through a window.
02:01Everyone else has the sins to deal with, who wastes no time tearing them apart.
02:0620.
02:12The PG-13 rating means this scene isn't as violent as it realistically could be.
02:18But there are still some genuinely alarming moments, like seeing the board members pressed
02:23up against the office windows, shrieking for help.
02:32Dear old dad gets the worst of it.
02:34Sivana makes him watch before sick and greed on him.
02:3820.
02:39Oh, greed.
02:4220.
02:42You can have him.
02:4320.
02:45No.
02:47No.
02:49No.
02:51No.
02:53No.
02:55Number 18.
02:56Batman, The Flash.
02:57During the climactic battle against General Zod's forces,
03:01Batman knows that he has to do whatever it takes to even the odds.
03:04He then makes the decision to take out a protective force field by crashing his bat plane into it,
03:09effectively sacrificing himself in a fiery explosion.
03:13Going down.
03:20I'm not going alone.
03:21I'm not going down.
03:23Since Batman is the Dark Knight, the Dark Death feels appropriate.
03:27However, what makes this even more brutal is how utterly stupid this whole send-off was.
03:31Considering that Batman's final attack didn't actually break anything of importance,
03:36that means he basically took his own life for no reason.
03:51It's such a bizarre sequence of events that it makes the aftermath even more grim than before.
03:56Seriously, if that isn't a rough way to go out, then what is?
04:01Be okay.
04:03Not this time, kid.
04:07Maybe some other time.
04:0817.
04:09Zod, Man of Steel
04:11In the entry to kick off DC's live-action shared universe,
04:15Michael Shannon brought high-level intensity to the role of Zod.
04:19I will find him.
04:22I will find him, Lara.
04:27I will find him!
04:29The Kryptonian general takes it upon himself to bring his people back from the brink of death
04:35by wiping out another.
04:37Us.
04:37Thankfully, Supes doesn't let that happen.
04:40You're a monster, Zod.
04:45And I'm gonna stop you.
04:52In one of the most destructive superhero fights ever, the two rage through Metropolis.
04:57As Zod threatens to destroy an innocent family right in front of him, Superman does the only
05:02thing he can think of and snaps his enemy's neck with tremendous force.
05:12Clark's turmoil over the decision is evident in Henry Cavill's performance,
05:17but it also caused debate among fans and creators over whether it was the right thing for Superman to do.
05:2516.
05:26Dollmaker
05:28When Batman and Robin investigate the disappearances of several children,
05:31their trail leads them back to the demented Dollmaker.
05:34Amidst the ensuing chaos, Robin battles against the serial killer and is close to killing him,
05:39but ultimately spares his life.
05:52But not long after that, Dollmaker dies anyway when his heart gets ripped out.
05:57The murderer is revealed to be Talon, a deadly assassin from the Court of Owls.
06:01It shouldn't be too hard to see how getting your heart ripped from your body can be a horrific experience.
06:08What have you done?
06:09That being said, Dollmaker totally had it coming.
06:12Sure, it's a horrible way to die, but he was also endangering countless lives.
06:16So, yeah, we definitely aren't going to be missing the Dollmaker who did it.
06:22Figure it out for yourself.
06:24Robin!
06:25I've waited a long time for this.
06:33I've waited a long time for this.
06:37If you're a pirate going up against a superhero, expect to meet a very swift end.
06:44I've waited a long time for this.
06:56Towards the beginning of the movie, father and son duo Jesse and David Kane lead an attack on a submarine.
07:02It isn't long before Aquaman shows up and lays the smackdown on David, leading Pops to step in with explosives.
07:18Despite one being effective against the hero, explosives on a submarine are obviously never a good call.
07:24After a short bout, Jesse ends up pinned underneath a torpedo with the water rushing in.
07:37When Aquaman leaves them to fend for themselves, David refuses to abandon his dad until Jesse holds up a grenade.
07:49The off-screen explosion signals the birth of Black Manta.
07:54Number 14, Lois Lane, Zack Snyder's Justice League.
07:59There are some elements of certain DCU films that we might not see come to fruition due to the behind-the-scenes changes at Warner Brothers.
08:07One of those elements are the visions of an apocalyptic future with an evil Superman.
08:12In Zack Snyder's Justice League, the team must combat Steppenwolf and the threat of his immensely deadly master, Darkseid.
08:27In order to do so, they revive Superman, but we see that the possibility of their failure can lead to disaster.
08:34One brief scene shows Clark holding the charred remains of Lois and weeping, likely the outcome of Darkseid's Omega Beams.
08:47Although we don't see it, Joker does say she suffered.
08:51Poor Lois.
08:52Now she suffered so.
08:57Number 13, Starro, The Suicide Squad.
09:01When James Gunn entered the DCU, we knew we'd be getting something special.
09:06Without the constraints of a PG-13 rating, that something special was soaked in as much blood as possible.
09:13I'm a superhero!
09:17I'm a f***ing stupid!
09:21During the climax, the squad faces off against Starro the Conqueror.
09:25And it's just as over the top as a fight against the giant starfish should be.
09:29Although Starro's mind controls many humans, they pale in comparison to the number of rats on the island.
09:35This city isn't yours.
09:38This city isn't ours.
09:40This city is theirs.
09:48Oh hell.
09:49Ratcatcher 2 commands her furry allies to swarm the giant alien, creating an opening for Harley to pierce Starro's eye with her javelin.
10:06As she floats inside the eye with an army of rodents nibbling away,
10:10the music swells.
10:11It would almost be a sight to behold if it wasn't so gross.
10:16Number 12, Superman, Batman vs Superman, Dawn of Justice.
10:20The DCEU was a turbulent universe for Superman.
10:23In his second movie appearance, he had to square off against Batman and later an unhinged beast known as Doomsday.
10:29His battle would be so intense, in fact, that it cost him his life.
10:41The death occurred when Superman stabbed him with a special kryptonite spear.
10:45It stopped Doomsday, but the creature was smart enough to then use one of his special spikes to stab him as well.
10:50The action packed sequence essentially took both of these powerhouses out of the equation.
11:02But while no one really missed Doomsday, the world felt the loss of Superman.
11:06His death rattled the DCEU and while he was quickly brought back, it showed how even Superman wasn't immortal.
11:12Number 11, Murray Franklin, Joker The TV business is rough, but the late night
11:25landscape has never turned this leaf though.
11:27When Murray Franklin invited Arthur Fleck to his program, things went completely off the rails.
11:32The talk show host antagonized Arthur prior to their meeting and continued to do so during the actual interview.
11:55Arthur deserves criticism, but Murray's words would cost the host dearly.
11:59His sharp jabs would get shut down as Arthur shot him point-blank on air.
12:03How about another joke, Murray?
12:05No, I think we've had enough of your jokes.
12:06What do you get?
12:07I don't think so.
12:08When you cross a mentally ill loner with a society that abandons him and feeds up my trash!
12:14Call the police!
12:15I'll tell you what you get!
12:16The look of horror on the other guests as Murray's blood splattered everywhere
12:20really sold just how disturbing this primetime event was.
12:23Arthur was appropriately punished for his actions, but this televised execution should serve as a
12:28reminder not to push the Joker's buttons.
12:30Good night, and always remember, that's...
12:3810. The Cap, Peacemaker
12:41Holy cow.
12:43It is.
12:46James Gunn kept the violent absurdity going from the Suicide Squad with a series dedicated to one of
12:52its most absurd characters. Peacemaker follows the antihero as he works with Waller's underlings to
12:59stop an alien invasion. They eventually learned the aliens called butterflies brought one of their
13:04cows with them, a gigantic bug-like monstrosity that produces their only source of food.
13:11Activate human torpedo.
13:13What?
13:13During the group's final mission, Peacemaker activates the human torpedo helmet on Adebayo's head,
13:25shooting her straight through the cow's chest. She then falls out of it, bringing lots of gross
13:31goop with her. There were already some fairly vicious death scenes throughout the show,
13:35but the insane circumstances make this one of the more memorable.
13:40Dude, you're shot. You gotta be admitted.
13:43I'm fine, seriously. All I need is a good nap.
13:51Number 9. Black Mask, Birds of Prey.
13:55That was super embarrassing.
13:57Sure was.
13:58You think you can beat me?
14:00As the first movie within DC's shared universe to go for an R rating, Birds of Prey features an
14:05appropriate level of brutality. A big portion of it comes from the sadistic villain, Ewan McGregor's
14:11Black Mask.
14:13You're welcome.
14:17Is that a snot bubble?
14:19Ew, gross.
14:21Oh, I've changed my mind. Peel it off.
14:23However, the most savage death in the movie is his own. After plenty of blood has already been shed,
14:30Harley Quinn catches up with Black Mask on a pier with a young Cassandra as his hostage.
14:36But the girl proves her proficiency at sleight of hand. She clips a grenade to Black Mask's waist
14:42and pulls the pin, while Harley rushes to toss him over the railing.
14:46It's a very quick death, but an undeniably brutal one.
14:59Number 8. Max Shrek, Batman Returns.
15:02Step aside, Bruce, because the chemistry between Max Shrek and Selina Kyle is electric. In fact,
15:08sparks flew between them. No, seriously, that's what happened. After getting almost killed by Shrek,
15:13Selina went from a shy receptionist to a flamboyant vigilante.
15:17You know, for a second there, you really frightened me.
15:26And as Catwoman, she got revenge on her former employer. By pressing a stun gun against him
15:31and grabbing a hold of an electric cable, she fried Max while also giving him a kiss of death.
15:36This was one elaborate way to go out, to say the least.
15:43It's also undeniably a traumatizing moment since it effectively turned Max into a charred corpse.
15:51With this and the horrifying way that the penguin died,
15:54it's no wonder why so many kids were scared of Batman Return.
15:57Number 7. Jason Todd, Batman Under the Red Hood.
16:13Few sidekicks have had it worse in the DC Universe than Jason Todd. Not only was he captured by the
16:18Joker, but he was also beaten nearly to death with a crowbar.
16:22So, let's try and clear this up, okay, pumpkin? What hurts more? A or B? Forehand or backhand?
16:37Then, to ramp things up, Joker rigged the warehouse he was in to explode. Torture and humiliation wasn't
16:43enough. A massive explosion also had to be engineered to screw Jason over.
16:55Even though he came back to life, his death remained a traumatizing chapter in his history.
17:00It makes perfect sense. Death is never easy to deal with, but a death like this is even more crazy than
17:06what audiences normally expect. Joker's murder of Jason Todd is the reason Jason became Red Hood,
17:11and also the reason Batman considers him his greatest failure.
17:15Sir, in light of all the recent events, would you like me to remove that?
17:22No. This doesn't change anything.
17:27Number 6. Joker, Injustice. Joker is one of DC's most unhinged villains, and this movie proves it.
17:34He messed with Superman's head and tricked him into killing his pregnant wife Lois Lane.
17:38So, as you can imagine, the Manif still wasn't happy about this.
17:43You took his wife. You took his unborn child. And his city. Why?
17:52If you thought getting shot by Tim Drake in Return of the Joker was grim, you haven't seen anything yet.
17:57That's not funny.
18:04Once Superman found the Joker, he rammed his arm through the clown's chest.
18:08Brutal doesn't begin to describe how grisly this death was.
18:11The execution was a level of violence we'd never expect from Superman.
18:15And after this murder, it turned our hero into a ruthless dictator.
18:19Joker deserved to be punished, but in the end, his death arguably doomed this universe.
18:23Now that's a bench line.
18:27Number 5. Black Adam
18:30Black Adam may not have changed the hierarchy of DC the way we were promised,
18:34but it nevertheless has some pretty awesome beatdowns courtesy of its heroes.
18:39You know what I have to do?
18:43Beat his ass.
18:44During the climax, Black Adam learns the importance of playing well with others
18:49when he and the Justice Society take on the demon Sabath.
18:52His powers may have been outmatched if it weren't for Hawkman,
18:56who provides Adam the assist for a slam dunk.
19:08With a little wizardry,
19:09Hawkman holds the villain down while Adam sends electricity coursing through his body.
19:14He then rips him in half. The long way.
19:17With Sabath's insides consisting of pure molten lava.
19:21Tell him the man in black sent you.
19:31That could not have been a pleasant way to go.
19:34Number 4. The Good Guys. The Suicide Squad.
19:38Long before the Suicide Squad even knows about Starro,
19:41they have to rescue Rick Flag after he gets captured.
19:45Or at least that's what they think they're doing.
19:48Nothing like a blood bath to start the day.
19:51They call you peacemaker.
19:52I cherish peace with all my heart.
19:54I don't care how many men, women and children I need to kill to get it.
19:57Under orders from Amanda Waller,
19:59our anti-heroes mount a stealthy assault to free Flag from his supposed captors.
20:05The sequence is filled with some grisly kills.
20:07Highlights include King Shark eating someone whole,
20:14and Bloodsport and Peacemaker's competition over who can get the coolest kill.
20:22It's some pristine carnage made even more hilarious when the group finds out that Flag
20:27was never in any danger.
20:29In actuality, they just murdered a whole host of freedom fighters,
20:33who would have gladly aided them on their mission against those in power.
20:37Whoops!
20:38Why did my people not alert me of your arrival?
20:43We didn't see any people.
20:44I didn't see anybody.
20:48I turned them into my mother in my head and killed them.
20:50Number 3.
20:51Mera. Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox.
20:54After discovering that her husband Aquaman was having an affair with Wonder Woman,
20:58Queen Mary decided that she was out for blood.
21:06Unfortunately, she got too ahead of herself in her ambitions.
21:10You actually have no idea just how true that is.
21:13When Mera went to kill Wonder Woman, she ended up getting decapitated.
21:22Needless to say, things didn't go well for her as she died instantly.
21:26Mera was right to be upset by her husband's betrayal,
21:28but there's simply no world where she has any chance at killing Wonder Woman.
21:33Sorry, there's no ifs or buts about it.
21:35Maybe instead of picking up her sword, she should have picked up some divorce papers instead.
21:39Who knows, it could have saved her life.
21:48Number 2. Rorschach. Watchmen.
21:50Many key relationships broke down in this movie, including Rorschach and Dr. Manhattans.
21:55After discovering Ozymandias' horrific plans for humanity, Rorschach was understandably furious.
22:00We were meant to exact justice.
22:04Everyone's gonna know what you've done.
22:06Will they?
22:08By exposing me, you would sacrifice the peace so many died for today.
22:12To make matters worse, Manhattan didn't want to expose Ozymandias for his crimes,
22:17which meant that Rorschach had a bone to pick with him too.
22:20He called Manhattan out, even daring the walking nuclear bomb to destroy him.
22:24And well, that's exactly what he did by exploding Rorschach.
22:27Never compromise.
22:29Not even in the face of Armageddon.
22:33That's always been the difference between us, Daniel.
22:35It's pretty hard to forget the disturbing visuals of someone blowing up.
22:38Instead of accepting things, Rorschach chose to go out on his own terms in a chilling act of defiance.
22:44Getting wiped out by someone who's basically a god is a rough deal.
22:47But it's weirdly poetic for a character like this.

23:181. Team 1 – The Suicide Squad
23:25To say 2016's Suicide Squad disappointed fans would be putting it lightly.
23:31For those wary of the IP's second outing, the opening sequence showed the team was in good, blood-soaked hands.
23:38Amanda Waller sends two teams into Corto Maltese.
23:41The first runs into trouble when the Pete Davidson's Blackguard portrays them.
23:45With one blast to the face, the mayhem begins.
23:49Hey! Hey, guys! Whoa!
23:52We got a deal, right?
23:53Uh-uh, uh-uh.
23:54Waller, we're made!
23:56The team does what they can, dispatching the island's military in ways befitting of supervillains.
24:02But they're soon overwhelmed.
24:04Captain Boomerang and Mongol go out in a fiery helicopter crash,
24:15while Savant gets his head blown up by Waller when he tries to flee.
24:20You are in violation of your agreement.
24:31Damn it.
24:32It's just as chaotic and violent as an R-rated Suicide Squad should be.
24:37Which is to say, extremely.
24:40This is so frustrating.
24:42He just told me I have to carry this javelin for a reason, but he didn't say why.
24:46Are there any other intense DC deaths we missed?
24:49Gross us out in the comments below.

24:53Peacemaker.
24:56What a joke.
