00:41if there's any end to the miserable start to the season being enjoyed by both Sheffield United
00:45and near neighbours Sheffield Wednesday before looking at the contrasting promise shown by
00:49Middlesbrough and Hull in their respective campaigns. If you want to get in touch with us at the YP

01:19Right as mentioned we're joined once again by the YP's football writing team of Leon Wobshall
01:26and Stuart Rayner. We're going to talk Premier League and Championship on this week's show
01:32or that's what we're going to concentrate on. I'm going to start off at the very top. Stuart
01:37seems to have been coming for ages compared to well particularly with all our other teams
01:44haven't got started early but Leeds United finally returned to action on Monday night
01:48at Ellen Road and it was a joyous occasion eventually although they did have to wait a
01:53while for the magic moment to arrive and for some people in somewhat controversial circumstances.
01:58Yeah I mean it certainly felt like it had been a long way just in terms of their built up
02:04anticipation at Ellen Road on the night. It was absolutely banging on the night and yeah
02:10a really good performance with one sort of caveat in that they absolutely dominated an
02:18Everton team with loads of Premier League experience but didn't put them away until a penalty in
02:24the 84th minute which as you said it was a bit of controversy around so that was the that
02:28was the one niggle but you know as a newly promoted team to start with a win and a really good
02:34performance and something to work on I think that ticks a lot of boxes. I thought they were
02:40outstanding in the way that they dominated particularly the first half but you know the
02:44game is the game as a whole. The new midfield three worked brilliantly. I thought Gabriel Goodmanson
02:52was excellent at left back getting forward and doing what little bit of defending he had to do
02:57and yeah there was a real intensity about Leeds' football about their pressing the sort of thing
03:06that you would struggle to replicate Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday in the championship
03:12over 46 games but in the more week-to-week Premier League you know something that perhaps is a bit
03:19more achievable on a regular basis and say if they play like that over the whole season
03:24they won't have any they won't have any problems they they were they were very good I say it did it
03:31did give Daniel Farker that sort of little bit of leverage with the board to say when I keep saying
03:37about these attacking reinforcements I do really need them but as a as a performance as a whole I
03:44thought they were absolutely excellent. Yeah there's obviously a lot of common controversy about the
03:49penalty yeah I think you know he obviously made a movement his arms were next to him but he did make
03:56a sort of leap he lent into the into the ball but I think it's fair to say that Leeds will probably
04:01get they'll come on the wrong end of a few of these um in the season ahead so I suppose there's an
04:06argument to say that these things will even themselves out at some point Stewart's right to say
04:12you know over the course of the piece Leeds deserve to win and you know it's quite interesting that
04:16after they scored they had to finish quite strong as well didn't they really there's no real onslaught
04:21from Everton yeah I just agree what what Stewart said really it's you know August particularly well
04:27the the midfield three played well the the game management was good wasn't it and you know the
04:32Philip of a of a clean sheet as well you know yeah showing how to manage games Leeds are going to have
04:38to do that this season if they're going to if they're going to miss you know successfully achieve
04:43their aim so it was a good step in in the right direction it was Stewart's mentioned one or two
04:47the new signings I thought some of the you know the the cast already on deck played very well I thought
04:52Ampadu had an excellent game yeah uh obviously they were strong and orderly at the at the back uh Tanaka
05:00had some good contribution there were some nice passages of play especially in the in the first half
05:05from from what I saw so yeah I mean I think it's just good for the league as well isn't it I mean
05:10two promoted teams you know winning first up I can't remember off the top of my head when
05:15when any of the um obviously the three teams who got promoted when they first won um last last
05:22season but so it was you know a positive signs in that regard obviously Leeds winning Sunderland
05:26winning that was good a clean sheet tick to box three points um to get them off the board and get
05:33them off the board at Ellum Road as well I think psychologically that's um that's that's important
05:39and um yeah I mean obviously like I said the penalty was was contentious I think there'd have been a
05:45a lot of iron if it had gone at the other end of the pitch for sure but what I would say is I think
05:49these will even themselves out of the of the course of the season Leeds are bound to get one or two
05:54of the funds along the way so I don't think they'll be making any um any apologies for what happened last night
05:59yeah I mean I I thought it probably was a penalty because of the fact that he leant into the ball
06:04as Leon mentioned but his arms were by his side it was it was it really could have gone either way
06:10and and once the referee was trying to stop it with his midriff wasn't he really yes because if
06:15his arms are by his side so exactly what can you do as a defender can you move towards the ball yeah I
06:22mean that the handball is a nightmare now for defenders you just don't know what you can and can't do
06:27don't you as Leon says there'll be there'll be more of these controversies to come and some will go
06:32against Leeds but I think I think the important thing we know it's going to be difficult for Leeds
06:36this season um you know you you don't need to know much about the recent history of the premier
06:41league and championship to know that so really important for them and for some of them to get off to
06:46a to get off to a good start um just to fill in the the gaps when Liam was saying about when they
06:51when their last one last year I think one of the teams didn't get the first win till October the other two till
06:56November um so yeah to get to just continue that momentum from last season and that positivity
07:03huge because if they've gone into games against Arsenal and Newcastle without it
07:07you worry about it and you know there's also a stat doing the rounds I think it's um
07:12any team any newly promoted team that's got 10 points after the first 10 games has stayed up
07:17yeah those that haven't have gone down so again it shows the importance of hitting the ground running
07:23and and building on that positivity and really I say for all that it wasn't perfect as a Leeds fan
07:29I don't think there could be anything but positive coming away from the ground um after that performance
07:34yeah I mean they've got to show that platform first of all and be solid and and hard to beat
07:39and you know you look at Everton I think there was only that chance wasn't there in the
07:42in the second half at the near post it was the only the only real say that the goalkeeper had to make so
07:47from a defensive point of view it was you know it was a strong performance and you know Farkas
07:53obviously I think the priority before the end of the window will be bringing in a a couple of
07:57strikers which is uh but it's the hardest thing to do isn't it they're the ones who cost the most
08:02um dollars they've obviously got Calvert-Lewin to uh to come in but I think in terms of
08:07team-wise defensively collectively it was a it was a step in the right direction it looked to be on
08:13the night that Everton had more issues than Leeds yeah I mean Daniel Fark made a lot before the
08:18well before the start of the season throughout the summer that he wanted to sort of he wanted
08:21his team to maintain that positive approach that they'd shown in the championship obviously it has
08:26to be countered by a more defensive approach generally but did you see plenty of of of that
08:32approach that positive of getting on the front foot and perhaps was it easier against a team like
08:36Everton who had plenty of struggles last season yeah it was easier against Everton Everton will pull but
08:41you don't you don't get fewer points for beating a poor team and when all said and done it's just
08:46about getting the job done and uh and getting on with it but yes there was a lot of positivity in it
08:52in the way that they pressed in the way that they dominated the ball in the way that they looked to
08:57look to get forward you know Leon and I've talked about it many times on this uh podcast it's it's about
09:04having that platform first and foremost and and that was there you know you you never felt all night
09:10they were in any danger of conceding and that allowed them to play in that in that positive way
09:15and say if they can if they can add those bits you know uh a winger is uh is a high priority for him
09:23as well as another center forward then that can really take them on another level but it's just
09:28about making that first step and establishing yourself getting that first win on the board getting
09:33some positivity continuing the momentum they're you know a few steps down the road of where they
09:38need to be and now it's just adding the rest really i think that's the way that that's how
09:42they're going to achieve the raves this season they're not with the greatest respect they're not
09:45going to stay up by smashing teams are they it's going to be about managing periods of games when
09:51they're under under pressure you know that sort of collective unity discipline and uh yeah it was
09:57a good step in in the right direction i thought particularly with um games against well trip to
10:03arsenal then newcastle at home coming up i mean you know we could be look we could have you know it
10:07could have could have should have would have you could easily be looking at a situation if they'd
10:11not got that win last night where three games in and they've got not got a point so it was perhaps
10:15even more crucial to to get that first win on the board like you say yeah i mean let's be honest look
10:20look comes into it and you know suddenly we're lucky to get west ham at home on the first day of
10:25the season leeds were lucky to get everton there was luck around the penalty but you've just got to
10:29take advantage of it because as leon says there'll be enough moments when you have bad luck as well
10:33yeah definitely um okay let's turn to the championship um and we'll start uh we'll start in
10:39sheffield uh because that's where it all seems to be well not happening in in many in many senses um
10:45leon um sheffield wednesday and uh sheffield united obviously both struggling you were at hillsborough
10:50on saturday uh three nil defeat at the hands of stoke city uh protests from the fans against this
10:56one jen seary um do you see any end in sight for this sort of club's woes no no sadly not not
11:04particularly really i mean you can't imagine trying to say we want to do anything until the transfer
11:08wind is out of the way if they do sell it in the autumn but in in terms of decency i say and they
11:13made the feelings heard see the mock funeral procession from hillsborough park to the stadium there was a
11:18there was a little bit of disruption when the game got away with the with the shrills with the
11:23whistles it it did sort of it did sort of died and yeah it was funny there was the chorus of wednesday
11:30till i die then there was a few whistles because like a stoke scored so it was um yeah it was funny
11:39it was just a sort of i mean obviously shoot was at the the opening game it it just stuck to me that
11:45it's a sort of game unless things dramatically alter and they can get some some players in and
11:52some you know experienced players it's got you're going to see a lot of those sort of games this
11:56season i think you know i look at wednesday you just think how how can they try how can they win
12:01games at this level and i don't know what stuart thinks i just think they're just going to try and
12:05stay in games as long as possible yeah nick nick a goal and then then defend with it with their lives
12:12really and the other obviously the sides at the bottom don't get don't get much luck and they've
12:18had no luck at all this summer you know you wanted to stay in the game keep it keep it tight call it
12:24what you will and they concede a goal after 59 seconds and um obviously they have the team talk at
12:30half time maybe tweak address one or two things and then 27 minutes in 27 minutes 27 seconds into the
12:38second half they concede the second and there's the game was pretty much over by then they had a
12:44little a little bit of a flurry a couple of couple of chances unfortunately came up against a very good
12:50goalkeeper on on the day in johansen we know a lot about him from his time at rotherm he didn't have
12:55loads to do but what he did he he did extremely well and it's it's easy to see why one or two premier
13:01league teams are looking at him and straightaway after that stoke got a third goal and and that was
13:07that i mean you just look at the bench you just can't with the greatest respect in the world to
13:12what he's got there he can't change anything can he really you know he can he can change it to sort
13:16of fresh freshen things up in terms of energy but in terms of being proactive and making a couple of
13:22bowl substitutions to to win games there's not a great deal he can he can do at the minute and one
13:29one or two of the i mean there was nothing wrong with the with the the heart there's certainly
13:34tick boxes there there's no lack of application but you just look at them in you know in a few in
13:40a few areas they've been played there's players lately badly over the course of the piece but
13:44you know for the first goal it was him and um and the other look inexperienced and stoke scored and
13:49um yeah i just sort of said in my match report i mean stoke has come from um
13:55Huddersfield or in league one he's exactly the sort of player that you think under normal
13:59circumstances Wednesday should be going for really you know a championship savvy player with um
14:04with all the goals and yeah sadly there was to say no lack of effort there was you know the applause
14:10at the end was was heartfelt from players to supporters and from supporters to players
14:15you know they are all sort of in it together but um yeah in in terms of how home games will pan out
14:23unless somehow they can get those sort of experienced bodies into provide some covering across the squad
14:31i think there's sadly going to be a lot of games like that and i suppose the only positive is that
14:35nobody got injured yeah i mean as leon says i was at i was at the leicester game and the the spirit and
14:41the heart and everything was brilliant for 75 minutes but the you know the worry about Sheffield Wednesday is
14:48maintaining it you know it's it's the 2020s and for right or wrong you get five substitutes in a game
14:56you need that infusion of energy from the bench and you just look at Wednesday's bench now you know
15:01never mind you know a couple of months down the line if this is to continue and you just think there's
15:06nothing there you know they're really they're really struggling to persuade the football league to
15:11allow them to sign new players you know they've they've identified players they want got football
15:17league are in a really difficult position they're trying to ride two horses on the one hand like
15:22everyone in football they want chan serial to that club and they want to do what they they can to to
15:27help with that um on the other hand they they don't want Sheffield Wednesday to go to go bus so they
15:35you know they can't they can't sort of let them spend money they can't have on the other hand
15:40that you don't want the sort of situation you have with Salford in the rugby league where
15:44one team is just a free six points for someone and it's just the luck of the fixture so they've got
15:48they've got to avoid that but i mean one of the big worries for me leon mentions you know
15:55chan seri holding on till after the transfer window pierce charles has been outstanding in the in
16:00in the first couple of games i don't know how he was against though but um there's a wage bill coming up
16:06the temptation is there to cash in i just look at pierce charles and i look at james trafford and
16:13you know in the last couple of years man city have sold it for 20 million and bought him back for 27
16:18million i think if charles had a full season of championship football i don't think he'd quite
16:22get to that 20 million valuation but he'd be heading in that direction if you get sold now by a desperate
16:28sheffield wednesday to pay the bills and to get the money up front then it's going to be like the
16:33gusama and and and masaba sale it's going to be massively reduced um and you just you just fear that
16:41they're going to you know end up selling the family silver for buttons really and it would be it
16:47would be a real shame because you know like everyone else that that club charles has had
16:53you know opportunity to walk out and go elsewhere he clearly doesn't want to but if it comes to a
16:58situation where he has to be sold i think it will just damage wednesday even further and you know he's
17:04the only senior goalkeeper there so they really are going to need to to get some signings in if he goes
17:10but um it's such a desperate situation and it it does it does need to resolve it but unfortunately
17:16it all hands hangs on one man's ego and and how much he's prepared to to sell the football club for
17:22it's as simple as that really and even the grass was too dry on saturday as well there were no
17:27there were no sprinklers on it at half time if that doesn't sum things up nothing nothing does really
17:32they've just got to be grateful for for small mercies i suppose this week there's no there's no
17:37there's no midweek game that i suppose that is something isn't there and that they go to to
17:41rexham on saturday and you know after all the hype about rexham they've obviously kicked off with two
17:47defeats so maybe there'll be a little bit of a bit of pressure there but you sort of do especially
17:52fear for them when the season kicks in and you get the three game weeks that's gonna really that's gonna
17:59be so so hard for as it stands for wednesday to somehow cope with that it's almost cruel really isn't it
18:05you know if you have to factor in you know they might get a wednesday night game and have to back
18:10up on on the saturday i mean it's um it looks the hardest job in management having to sort of do that
18:17as as things stand for sure and while the times are dark at hillsborough no doubt leon i gather some
18:24like relief came by way of the match day playlist with a couple of songs that were playing yes it was
18:29right it was quite brazen someone someone was having a bit of a joke at yes yes i i i do like
18:36to get um it must be the old musical heading me i like to get a few into the odd match report so
18:42there's a little bit of a brazen um cheekiness there which which i don't mind in the circumstances
18:48there was yeah they had money money too tight to mention what else did they have they had a live and
18:54kicking as well before that so we sort of build it up really and then we have the dream one yes we
19:00had that at half time so it uh it's amused uh it can it can amuse some of us sort of
19:07call it gallows humor but uh yeah i mean i mean as you said as well phil sheffield united as well
19:14it's not a i know it's only two games in but yeah it's not a it's not a great look for the steel city
19:19that uh that league table at the minute is it so i think they've got a few worries as
19:25as well sheffield united i don't know what stewart thinks but it just it just doesn't smell right
19:30there does it at the minute now for all manner of reasons you know they they obviously need to get
19:35players desperately need to get well it's not as desperate as sheffield wednesday but it's sort of
19:41there's a real keenness for them to do some some important business if they're gonna
19:47you know console that you know they want to be amongst the players this season in the championship
19:52they need work to do and they'd obviously been um you know he spoke last week ruben sellers he was
19:58quite candid saying you know it's not been good enough the recruitment safari included himself and
20:03filled everyone really and um yeah he's had to lament on a poor performance at the weekend as well
20:09which he said wasn't good enough so looks like a big game for them against milwall this weekend
20:13yeah the balance just doesn't doesn't feel right there so it's it's it's created by poor recruitment
20:20um but uh yeah i saw them against bristol city on the on the opening day of the season and the
20:26midfield was just left wide open they had city peck who's not really a holding midfielder as the one
20:33holding midfielder and and and hamer and uh and callum o'hare is number eight they like to call
20:39them in the modern parlance and they were just swamped in midfield you know say as for all i'm
20:44i'm a big fan of uh of what he did at hull well it's a big fan he did a good job at hull yeah i
20:50wouldn't go overboard about it he did a good job at home but um he just couldn't he just couldn't find
20:56the right formula that day you know whether it be getting the fullbacks to help out or asking the
21:02midfielders to do more work or whatever they were just the balance was just all wrong and then you know
21:07you know by all accounts at swansea the attacking side of the play which was the the positive side
21:11against bristol city that went missing as well so um they're really they're really searching for
21:17something but but i think the answer lies in in more bodies and and bodies in the right position because
21:22as i say anybody would struggle to to make a a good team out of that out of that collection of players so
21:30having got the money in for anal akberhozic in particular they need to start spending it because
21:35it's all well and good buying these artificial intelligence players one of whom's already been
21:40shown the door but um their signings for tomorrow this is sheffield united's last season with parachute
21:47payments you know it sounds a bit over dramatic when we've just been talking about sheffield wednesday
21:51to say that they need to go up this season but in a footballing sense they really do need to do it
21:56this season they can't be they can't be just thinking about the long term unfortunately i think the
22:01players need the senior players need something to buy into don't they they need to go out and buy
22:07two or three proper players if you like obviously they've lost they've lost arm and objects they've
22:12lost they've lost more you know big probably big voices in the dressing room and you know big
22:18championship ready players and yeah i mean you sort of look at the first game i sort of watched bits of
22:23that and obviously norrington davis got a lot of stick of it but he's basically a left back who was who was asked to
22:29play in the in the center wasn't he and obviously the lad on loan binden he's he's only he's only a
22:34young boy isn't he really and uh he's just starting out in the championship and you know they desperately
22:39need another another another senior proper sort of center half obviously they've been after after
22:46quite a few linked with bobby thomas but it looks like it's one or two others that were sniffing around
22:51him potentially in the premier league as as well and linked with a couple of other players as well
22:58ben godfish of this world there's a there's a swedish lad as well they desperately need a couple in in
23:03in that part of the pitch for me yeah i mean you know they've got nine months to turn the results
23:08around but if they don't convince the senior players in the next couple of weeks then you know the likes
23:14of hamer the likes of cooper there'll be good offers for them they'll suddenly be thinking well i'm not
23:19sure i should be hanging around for this and then the damage is done so it is actually quite urgent
23:24that they you know make some statements on and off the field that um that they are going to sort this
23:29out i mean sellers spoke afterwards i think on saturday they said he would perfectly understand if
23:36the fans started to turn him is it a touch early for that well it is but as i said you know this is
23:43this is the reality of the situation you've got the ticking clock of the transfer window something
23:47needs to be sorted of course of course he needs patience of course he does but one of sayers is
23:53very good at um crisis management because that's all he's ever had to do in his career and and and
23:58one of his big strategies is just to pile all the responsibility on himself and all the all the blame on
24:04himself so i think i think that's part of it cheffield united fans aren't stupid they're not they're not
24:08going to you know force him out of the out of the club on on the on the basis of a of a couple of uh
24:14a couple of results when they can see the wider problems but um as i as i keep saying there's
24:21there's no time to faff about they really need to need to get on and address this very quickly
24:26there's an appreciation of what happened at leeds last season they're in exactly the same boat they
24:30lost the playoff final um cheffrey night were probably a bit more unlucky on the day weren't
24:35they really in their particular final you know chris wilder speaking afterwards about about the fact
24:40you've got to take inspiration from leeds and see leeds did follow follow up had an outstanding
24:45following season and obviously won the title and you know that'll be in the a lot of the back of the
24:51the blaze supporters my you know trying to emulate that but you know the first couple of weeks of the
24:55season they just look uh nowhere near that and obviously got big big issues with with the squad so
25:02you know that's sort of counting against sellers a little bit as well
25:05uh by contrast our other two teams uh in the championship are uh currently unbeaten only two
25:12games in i know i know um but uh middlesbrough where sort of had a sort of tame summer in terms
25:19of recruitment i think in terms of um how their fans will feel about what business was or wasn't done
25:25uh have made a promising start obviously you know league cup hammering my
25:29yeah doncaster roads aside they've had two decent swim um two decent wins uh and uh it's looking
25:37pretty positive up up in the northeast isn't it leo yeah i mean obviously not the the cup defeat
25:46against doncaster was an undeniably tough night they were they were mauled against it was pretty much a
25:51second string uh doncaster team as well and you know they made they made a few changes but it wasn't that
25:57many they only made sort of five five or six changes but i think if you look over there if
26:03you'd have said three games in you know which two games would you would you wanted to win as a new
26:08manager you know you'd certainly pick the you know ideally you don't you don't want to lose to a low
26:13division team at home and especially so badly but you know the league the two league wins it
26:18obviously takes uh pre-eminence doesn't it and i think the encouraging thing is the is the defensive
26:24the results have shown two clean clean sheets they didn't concede too many chances against
26:30swansea on on the opening day and they look pretty pretty solid against milwall a couple of moments um
26:37luke had to make an important goal line clearance in the in the first half and you know the ex-borough
26:44player cobert he he was a little bit unlucky in hitting both poles but he he probably should have
26:49scored in the in the second half but they've been you know considering some of the some of the awful
26:54concessions they made in the second half of of last season self-inflicted ones and that inability to
27:00cope with with pressure there you know the the signs in that regard are defensively a positive he's
27:06made a he's made a good start to his middle career out Alfie Jones who's obviously coming from
27:11from from hall he's he's been pretty solid in his first two uh league games um luke hayland as well
27:18he's he's actually i thought even in the game against docaster he's one of the few players who put his
27:24put his hand up and you know showed a lot of pride in in his performance he's he still showing that he's
27:31he's going to be an important player for for borough at the um even though he's at a senior age and
27:37yeah there was a little bit of a i think they needed it after the doncaster game and
27:43a little bit of a i suppose a feel good factor back they've made a couple of signings as well and
27:48by all accounts they're going to make a a few more i suppose the big thing is what happens with it with
27:53hayden hackney is you know he's a player who looks to me as is he's you know he's one of the top
27:58operators in his position in the in the championship a division he's you know perhaps got the measure of
28:03the better off and he certainly showed his importance against against millwall he uh
28:09you know in in the second half he was he was dropped back a little bit they brought kante and
28:15um defensive midfielder from from french football still a little bit inexperienced
28:20they brought one of the new signings home happens hansen on who's in an advanced midfield role and he
28:25actually looked the part and i think he changed it a little bit at millwall hackney slotted back and
28:31was given a little bit more more room to to pull the strings and dictate and he scored an excellent
28:36goal and you know finna's has as well coming he's he was a big player in most of the good things that
28:42burrow did last season he made his comeback from the bench and uh yeah it was it was a damn good
28:48team performance wasn't it i don't think that many people would have had had um had it down for an
28:53away win millwall obviously started well beating beating norwich but yeah i mean they got uh
28:59hopefully got the doncaster wobble out of the system and you know two wins out of two and two
29:04and clean sheets for a for a new manager is is just the ticket but they've obviously got a hard game
29:09coming up this week and um at norwich yeah i mean hackney will be will be crucial as we've known all
29:16summer really if you know if he has to go it'll be very very sad to see him go but the the important
29:24thing is that he goes early enough that middlesbrough can spend the money well um say if he stays that
29:30that's brilliant that's that's almost the the ideal situation but middlesbrough just need to know where
29:34they stand they don't want a repeat of all a few years ago with jared bowen where the sale didn't
29:40go through till after the deadline so they have no chance to spend the money and that was the start of
29:45yeah climbing into league one one or two teams that isn't it losing exactly so so yeah they just
29:51they just need to know where they stand with that i say hackney showed against millwall how important
29:56he is he is to them and and you would you would love to keep them but the reality is if you keep
30:00missing the both of the premier league it's at some point these guys are going to outgrow you and and
30:05you just have to accept that and as i say spend the money wisely but you know on the whole i think it's
30:10just a good coach doing what good coaches do sourcing out the back first building from there
30:16built a lot of bridges with the supporters by all accounts which is a very uh very clever move and
30:22then uh i say hopefully if they get the hackney money it's then about addressing what i think
30:27leon referred to in the last podcast they still have not really properly replaced this uh replaced
30:33latte laugh they still sort of have this addiction for signing number tens when they need a number nine
30:38sort of thing you know get get that right but uh but a good platform to come from and you know
30:44the reverse of sheffield united it's easier to attract these players if if you've got that sort
30:49of start and you can say look there's something worth getting on board with here yeah i mean they've
30:55from listening to edwards he sounds reasonably reasonably confident regarding getting the getting
31:00the work done in the window before before the end doesn't he it's probably in a little bit of a
31:04contrast to to sellers who you know he does sound a little bit more worried doesn't he they're
31:09obviously bringing a lad in from manchester city as well on loan highly rated there'll be one or two
31:14there that they've got the ducks in the road lined up to hopefully come in and to the beach
31:20of course in edwards you know he's a savvy opera as well presumably yeah i mean he just got a he's less
31:26obsessed with playing out from the back and getting it fought so yeah there probably will be some
31:31a lot of championship teams there will be some some bumps in the road but you know it's important
31:36coming in he's as stewart said he's he's coming in he's tried to really connect with the supporters
31:41he's gone out to to see them at um at fan engagements and you know he's he's he's someone
31:48who really wanted the job isn't didn't he obviously lost out to get to carry first first time around he
31:54was obviously interviewed for the bristol cities job and well in well in the thoughts of that club
32:00but you know by all accounts it was the middlesbrough was the one he wanted this is this is the job that
32:04he feels is made for him he did a by all accounts did a really strong presentation when he when he
32:10actually got the job and and convinced the borough hierarchy that he was he was the man so yeah he's
32:16he's desperate to do well and you know but all all new managers need that little bit of uh provide
32:21that little bit of hope in terms of results first of all to to support us and he's you know he's done
32:26that early on very early days there's a few a few new signings will take a little bit of time to
32:32to bed in and he's he's got to toughen them up defensively consistently it's it's a decent start
32:37in that regard but still a lot more to do but uh yeah he's he's he's certainly got off first base
32:43hasn't he with it um we'll finish off uh this week on the east of the county um stuart you were over
32:52in hull at the uh the weekend on sunday uh witnessed a confidence boosting win for hall city another
32:58team of ours who've had a troubled summer shall we say but they do seem to be emerging from the
33:02shadows as it were and uh uh a goalless draw at uh you know a good coventry team uh followed by a
33:083-2 win courtesy of ollie mcburnie uh and his late winner on sunday um again it's it's promising signs
33:16for the new manager isn't it yeah they seem to have had quite a good crisis this summer really
33:22um you know one of the one of the earlier podcasts in the summer i was pretty gloomy about
33:27hull's prospects i hope it's not too knee-jerk off the back of a couple of results but i'm much more
33:33encouraged uh by what i've seen since i mean they're they've been restricted to um free transfers
33:41and free loans this summer because of not not being on time with with various payments to various people
33:49but but maybe it's just thought and forced them to think a little bit more cleverly about their
33:56recruitment you know they're into double figures now for signings and there's some good ones in
33:59there i mean you obviously mentioned mcburnie he's the he's a sort of standout after two starts two
34:05goals two assists that's that's not a bad way to to start off joe gelhart i think every hill city fan
34:12knew that would be a good signing but um they've been able to make it happen um they've obviously been
34:17able to to persuade the football league that they can they could afford the the the wages and that sort
34:23of thing so yeah i think it's i think it's i think it's worked quite well for them um they were very
34:28entertaining in the in the bristols and the um sorry oxford united game uh that i saw at the weekend
34:35which is as we know that's a big part of the brief when you're managing rajan illajali you've got to
34:40entertain as well as win and you know they scored three against rexham as well they were a bit worrying
34:46defensively but you know as with as with everyone this is the first couple of weeks of the season they're
34:52not going to be they're not going to be perfect um but um whereas most football clubs as we've been
34:57saying you build from the back maybe with all you have to build build from the front to earn the
35:01patience of the owner and uh yeah i think it's i think it's been i think it's been a good start
35:08the key for them you know we talk about middlesbrough with hayden hackney they really really won't want
35:12to lose uh charlie hughes um who's had an excellent sort of first 12 months as a whole player and looks like
35:20that rarest of of rarities at hull city a good defensive signing um so yeah hopefully hopefully
35:27this is a sign that they can uh they can move forward and progress as we speak we're still
35:31waiting to hear if their appeal against the the uh fee restrict but um after after the way things
35:37have gone so far maybe this should be appealing for it to be extended because as i say it's it's
35:42focused in their minds and yeah i think it was important about a lot of a lot of the clubs in
35:47the region to have a positive start and not not more so than than hull and they've managed to do
35:51that i mean apart from sort of going to coventry they're not too they're not too nasty really are
35:56they you know you take oxford at home and black blackburn at home early season going to you're going
36:01to swan's manager as well you know he's he's come in and pulling the juries out a little bit among
36:06the whole city supporters and you know he's set them up to get a good you know an excellent point not
36:11just a good point an excellent point at coventry and you know your first home game first impressions
36:16and you know an entertaining game of football and and a win so that's a that's a tick in the box for
36:22him you you know you look at the holes sort of starting eleven they've got some got some pretty
36:27good players still haven't they at this level the lundstrans the matt crooks casey palmer mcburnie
36:32geldhart you know if they sort of all sort of come together and you know play well and have a good day
36:39hull are a a decent force in in this division so yeah i mean the trick is now backing it up
36:45they've got a home home game against blackburn which i think looks looks pretty handy on on paper
36:51there's a few issues there at blackburn and you know try and make the most of of this early season um
36:57fixture list but uh yeah it was it was a good sign for hull on on um on sunday more especially given
37:03you know it was a lousy opening third of the of the season last year wasn't it
37:07with with tim welter it just never he just never took off whatsoever and he was he was just almost
37:12behind the eight ball wasn't he he never he never got certainly never got off first base with the
37:17whole supporters so um hopefully it's uh it's it's a change in that respect well i was going to mention
37:24that obviously as you alluded to a bit earlier about hall stewart obviously despite the transfer
37:29embargoes are actually seen better prepared than they were 12 months ago um where it took them forever
37:34and a day to get players in by which time it was too late to save tim walter um i mean sergey ukirovich
37:40um seemed a pretty savvy operator in the in the players that have been brought in so far obviously
37:45again as we keep stressing it is early doors um but um just just just better placed to sort of
37:53hopefully avoid the kind of worries that they had last year in terms of trying to just stay in the league
37:58yeah i mean they've had a good pre-season in terms of results yeah you might say pre-season results
38:03big deal it doesn't count for anything doesn't count for much but they lost i think they lost every
38:08game under valta last season you know so just on it on every level if they feel better prepared even
38:14though as you say the circumstances they should really be be less prepared uh he wants two or three
38:22more players i think he says but you know we've got used under elegyali to seeing you know five and six
38:28arriving in in the last week of the transfer window so it's another sign that they're they're ahead of
38:32the game there just seems to be some clearer thinking there um as say it's early days the fixture
38:38list has been kind we'll wait to see how things pan out but it's optimistic winning at home was really
38:45important because the home formers the home form and the home entertainment has badly let them down
38:50uh you know even in the good times uh under under elegyali so it was just it was just a big tick in
38:56the box and you know it's good to see a lot of whole fans leaving the ground feeling positive and
39:01excited after after a home game which let's be honest if mcburnie hadn't scored that late goal
39:05we'd have been back to another frustrating draw when they should have outplayed you know should have
39:10beaten a weaker team they outplayed but um yeah look look does come into it you've got to make the most of
39:16it and uh and it feels like so far so good they have done that yorkshirepost.co.uk
