01:29Oh, Sir Henry.
01:32Yes, I'm sorry about the papers.
01:34Oh, stuff and nonsense.
01:36It's damn useless.
01:38They tried to put the brakes on, but someone leaked it.
01:42Good morning, darling.
01:43This is appalling.
01:45Listen to this.
01:46Colonel Arthur Bantry, squire of the small village of St Marymead,
01:50has told police that he cannot explain the presence of the murdered platinum blonde,
01:54glamorous nightclub chanter's Ruby Keane,
01:57who was found strangled in the library of his house, Gossington Hall,
02:00in the early hours of Saturday morning.
02:02Mrs Banshee, it is understood, has gone away to the CSUN.
02:08I must telephone to Arthur at once.
02:11Heaven knows what he'll be thinking if he reads any of that kind of trash.
02:14Excuse me, Henry.
02:14Have you thought any further?
02:28Oh, yes.
02:29To any conclusion?
02:31Oh, yes.
02:32Well, are you going to tell me?
02:34Well, whoever killed Ruby Keane killed Pamela Reeve.
02:45And I'm afraid that very shortly, a third murder will be attempted.
02:49Come in.
02:54Send for me, sir.
02:55Yes, sir.
02:56Have you allowed some report for those hairs you took from the rugs at Gossington Hall?
02:59Yes, sir.
03:00The tests were inconclusive.
03:02I think the rug was probably in the killer's car, sir.
03:05Yes, I suppose that's fair enough.
03:07What did the chap from the yard say about Blake?
03:10The night watchman saw Blake drive out of the studio car park at a few minutes to 11, sir.
03:14That's definite.
03:15As the cars go past his hut, the light falls on the driver's side.
03:18He's positive about it.
03:18And how far did you say it was from the studios to St. Mary Mead?
03:2220 miles.
03:23So he could have done it.
03:25Now, we've had corroborated evidence that Blake was at the studio party at 2 o'clock as well.
03:30You mean he could have gone back there to establish his alibi?
03:33Exactly, sir.
03:36She put her finger on Blake right from the first moment.
03:40Who did, sir?
03:42Miss Marple, of course.
03:43Who do you think?
03:44Zack, I retain the impression that you don't really take her seriously.
03:56Well, do you?
03:57In what way, sir?
03:59Let me give you a piece of advice.
04:02That old lady is tougher-minded, more cynical and just plain cleverer than most barristers you'll meet
04:08in what I hope is going to be your long and no doubt distinguished career.
04:12Sir Henry Clevering, what, downstairs?
04:22Good morning.
04:35Miss Marple?
04:38Oh, good morning, Mr. Gaskell.
04:41Good morning.
04:42No tennis today, Mr. Jefferson?
04:44No, no, later on, actually.
04:46Oh, of course.
04:47But with respect, Sir Henry, we've already taken statements from all Pamela Reeves' friends.
04:59Her friends at school and the girls who were at the Girl Guide rally.
05:01But Miss Marple's point is that one of them must know more, that the Reeve girl was an average child and that every average child has a special friend in whom she confides.
05:12Well, if that's so, you haven't found her, have you?
05:15No, sir, I haven't, if that's so.
05:23Inspector, I realise this is a great imposition.
05:27I know you must have an enormous amount on your plate.
05:30Nothing we're not abreast of, sir?
05:32Oh, no, no, no, no, of course not.
05:33No, I was just going to suggest that if you could organise an afternoon of interviews, perhaps one of your junior officers could preside, and if Miss Marple could just be present.
05:49Very well, sir. I'll set that up.
05:53Anything else, sir?
05:54Thank you, Inspector. Keep me informed.
05:57Good morning, Sir Henry.
05:59Good morning, Inspector.
06:03Excuse me, are you a detective?
06:23No, no, no.
06:23Somebody told me you're a rather important detective from London.
06:26I mean, the head of Scotland Yard or something.
06:29Miss Marple.
06:30Oh, Sir Henry.
06:31Well, I can see that one person at least is enjoying this horrid business.
06:36Yes, I am, rather.
06:38I've been sniffing around to see if I could find any clues, but I haven't.
06:42I've got a souvenir, though.
06:44My mother wanted me to chuck it away.
06:46Honestly, parents.
06:49Look at this.
06:50Fingernail, you see?
06:51One of hers.
06:52Fingernail of the murdered woman.
06:54Oh.
06:55What do you think?
06:56Good, isn't it?
06:59Where did you get it?
07:00Well, it was quite lucky, really, because nobody knew she was going to be murdered then.
07:06It was on the night in question, you see.
07:09Ruby caught a broken nail on Josie's shawl, so my mother cut it for her and told me to chuck it away.
07:15I just put it in my pocket to chuck away later and forgot.
07:19Do you think it's maybe lunchtime?
07:21I'm very hungry.
07:24Josie!
07:25Josie!
07:25Hello.
07:28Hello, Peter.
07:29How are you?
07:30Oh, good morning, Miss Turner.
07:31Is everything all right?
07:32I can't leave the hotel.
07:35Reporters, they don't care, do they?
07:36I don't leave the building.
07:38Oh, dear.
07:39Anyway, better get on.
07:43Josie, I want to interrogate you.
07:45How long did you know the deceased?
07:47Peter, have you been worrying me how to account for her nails?
07:53Her nails?
07:53Well, they were so short.
07:56A girl like that usually has elegant little claws.
08:00But I suppose if she'd torn one, then she might have had to clip the others to match her one of those.
08:07I don't know.
08:09Well, I...
08:10Oh, there's Slack.
08:12I'll go and ask.
08:15Inspector?
08:17Yes, Sir Henry?
08:17Just a little detail.
08:21Did you find any nail clippings in the girls' room?
08:25Yes, sir.
08:27A whole lot in the waste paper basket.
08:28Oh, good.
08:30Thanks.
08:31Um, manage to set up the interviews yet?
08:35I'm seeing to it now, sir.
08:38I'll let you know.
08:43Miss Marple!
08:44Amateurs.
08:50Deliver me from amateurs.
08:52Sir?
08:53Not only do we have a retired chief taking a busman's holiday,
08:55we now have the flaming attentions of an aging spinster to contend with.
08:59Give me some straightforward robbery with violence.
09:02Anything more on Blake yet?
09:03Yes, sir.
09:04Quite a lot.
09:05Got you.
09:18I don't want it.
09:20But, sir...
09:21Get out.
09:22Get out.
09:22Edwards?
09:39Edwards?
09:43Edwards?
09:44Edwards?
09:44I don't know.
10:14Oh, Mr. Gaskell.
10:22What's the matter, Edwards?
10:23Look, is it the cat just died?
10:24I'm not sure he'd welcome a visit, sir.
10:27What is it today?
10:28The glooms or the shouts?
10:29He's refusing his medication, sir.
10:32Oh, that's bad.
10:34What's about me trying?
10:35Well, you can try, sir.
10:37Good.
10:38You bring it out.
10:40Oh, sir.
10:44Morning, Jeff.
10:47What have you been up to?
10:49Humping furniture?
10:51Five black marks for overdoing it.
10:53Oh, go to hell.
10:55Now, Jeff,
10:56I'd like Adelaide to come up and have coffee with you today.
11:00Get out!
11:01Get out!
11:02Get out!
11:03Get out!
11:04He's a dominating man.
11:07Sometimes uncontrollable temper.
11:10And his weakness is that he needs people to dominate.
11:14How interesting.
11:15When Frank and I married,
11:18Jeff gave us so much money that Frank had absolutely nothing to strive for.
11:21See, in a way,
11:23that money was
11:25a way of denying Frank the means of becoming himself.
11:29And Jeff knew he wouldn't handle it properly.
11:33You'd rather hate Jeff.
11:35You are extraordinary.
11:37No.
11:39He is selfish.
11:41He's a collector of souls,
11:42but
11:42he loved Rosamund and Frank.
11:46He lives his life on thin ice.
11:48I mean, he could die at any moment.
11:49No, I don't hate him.
11:53I think it's time I was independent of him.
11:56You're going to get married again?
11:58What fun!
11:59How is dear old Hugo?
12:02Yes, he wants to marry me.
12:03I suppose that's what you wanted to know, wasn't it?
12:06Anyway, I haven't accepted.
12:12Forgive my asking, Mrs. Jefferson,
12:14but I wonder,
12:15did you like this poor dead girl?
12:17She was a vulgar,
12:20gold-digging simpleton.
12:22I didn't like her, though.
12:25I discovered what she was up to,
12:26and I was very angry.
12:28I could have killed her.
12:30Adelaide!
12:31For God's sake!
12:36Hello, Hugo.
12:38Right.
12:40So,
12:40we know that Blake left the studios
12:42and returned,
12:43giving him time to carry out
12:45one or both murders.
12:47We've established his presence
12:48in Danemouth
12:49on three separate occasions,
12:51and his presence at the Majestic
12:52at least once.
12:54We've established that he knew
12:56Ruby Key.
12:57Blake lied about when he left
12:59the studio party,
13:00lied about being at the Majestic.
13:03I think it's time
13:04we had a look
13:04at Mr. Blake's car,
13:05don't you?
13:06Tell Blake we need a statement,
13:08just routine.
13:08We can't have shifty
13:09his automobile
13:09while he's making it.
13:11Have you set up those interviews
13:12with the schoolgirls?
13:13Oh, yes, sir.
13:13All the girls in Pamela Rees
13:14form are also in the girl guides.
13:16Right.
13:17What about the financial inquiry, sir?
13:18Mrs. Jefferson
13:19and Mr. Gaskell.
13:20Oh, yes, sir.
13:20They're both hired up,
13:21matter of fact.
13:22Gaskell's in debt,
13:22quite a packet,
13:23but I thought we'd drop them.
13:24Cast iron alibis.
13:26A hundred thousand green ones
13:27is as good a motive
13:28as you'll get,
13:28but it won't wash in this case.
13:29Now, I think we'll have a look
13:32at Mr. Blake's car.
13:40Four hand alibis.
13:41Nice and easy.
13:42Good girl.
13:43Keep those legs back.
13:44Four hand.
13:46Oh, I can't get her.
13:49Bend your legs.
13:51Yes, watch back.
13:52Follow through.
13:54Good girl.
13:55Bend your knees.
13:57Good girl.
13:58Up.
13:59Good girl.
14:00Good girl.
14:01Good girl.
14:02Good girl.
14:03Good girl.
14:06What's your grip?
14:11Adelaide, I'll show you.
14:13It's the grip, you see.
14:14It's the grip.
14:15Now, relax.
14:17I'm not going to eat you.
14:25You see,
14:26fork the fan there,
14:27on there,
14:28and grip it nice and tight.
14:29I think we've got you down
14:46for 11.30 tomorrow,
14:47is that all right?
14:49Fine, Rick.
14:51See you then.
14:52I'm improving,
15:02don't you think?
15:03I'm improving, don't you think?
15:03Hmm.
15:04Oh, Hugo, stop it's grumpy.
15:15Oh, Mrs. Comberton, on time as usual.
15:16Yes.
15:17Off you go then.
15:19That fellow damn nearly,
15:21I just don't damn well like it,
15:23that's all.
15:24Oh, Hugo.
15:26Stop stopping your shirt.
15:27Oh, can't help how I feel, Adelaide.
15:29It's the way I am.
15:31How can I walk you?
15:33Did you know that Hugo Maclean
15:35was staying over at Dainbury Head
15:37when all this happened?
15:39Hadn't far to come
15:40when he was summoned, had he?
15:43What a coincidence.
15:45Isn't it?
15:49Yes, Inspector.
15:50I know where you are.
15:53Just off Castle Street.
15:56Not at all.
15:58I'll drive over to HQ this afternoon.
16:10Just routine.
16:14I mean, the police were bound
16:15to want to question me.
16:19What's going on, Blake?
16:20Blake?
16:26I've got something to tell you, D. Lee.
16:30All right, Griselda.
16:31Thank you, dear.
16:44I must go back to Gossington.
16:47Griselda says that
16:48people are saying that I left
16:50because I couldn't bear
16:51the shame of it.
16:53That must mean that they
16:54think I believe
16:55all the horrible things
16:56they're saying.
16:59I'll keep this sweet on, Jane.
17:02You will stay, won't you,
17:04and clear this thing up.
17:07Oh, Jane, you're so clever.
17:08Why haven't you solved
17:09this mystery by now?
17:11We don't seem to be getting on at all.
17:13Jane, I thought you'd know at once.
17:15I thought you'd know at once.
17:15No, dear.
17:17I didn't know at once.
17:19Not for some time.
17:21What?
17:25You mean you know now
17:26who killed Ruby Key?
17:28Oh, yes.
17:30Yes, I know that.
17:32It's a question of the others.
17:34Who else, you see?
17:37Jane,
17:39you're not to tease me,
17:40you're to tell me at once
17:41who it is and what you mean.
17:43Oh, no, that would never do at all,
17:44not it, dear.
17:45Why wouldn't it do?
17:46Because you're so indiscreet.
17:49Go around telling everyone.
17:51At least hinting.
17:53No, no,
17:53there's a long way to go yet.
17:55Great many things
17:56that are still quite obscure.
18:04Take it round about.
18:06Right here.
18:16Okay, let's start
18:31in the back of the car.
18:32Slack says ten minutes.
18:33He means five.
18:34Right, sir.
18:43Quite frankly, Sir Henry.
18:45Once he got over his grief,
18:47if he ever did, that is,
18:50the one thing
18:50that keeps Mr. Jefferson alive
18:52is his anger.
18:54Anger against the gods,
18:55is what I call it.
18:57He'll go down fighting.
19:00Did any particular things
19:01make him angry?
19:02Oh, inefficiency,
19:04time wasters,
19:06the petrol shortage,
19:07anything that prevents him
19:09from getting on.
19:11Deceit.
19:14Yes.
19:15Deceit.
19:18May I be frank, sir?
19:21Please do.
19:23There was an incident.
19:25You see, sir,
19:26the young woman
19:27that Mr. Jefferson
19:28was so taken up with
19:29just wasn't worth it.
19:31She was,
19:32to put it bluntly,
19:33a common little piece.
19:35I know that she
19:36particularly liked him, even.
19:37It was one afternoon
19:41about a week ago
19:44when Miss Keene
19:46was with Mr. Jefferson.
19:48You'll never believe it.
19:49It was the same landlady
19:51as had the dog in Huddersfield.
19:53The stinking cat.
19:54She moved.
19:58She moved.
20:02Are you all right, Jeff?
20:03Speck of dust.
20:05Don't do that.
20:07Worst thing you can do.
20:09Here, let me.
20:10Now, come on.
20:16Be a brave boy
20:18and open it.
20:19Come,
20:20that's it.
20:21Look up,
20:21look up.
20:22Come on,
20:26you little beggar.
20:28There.
20:29Got you.
20:31Someone's been
20:31sweeping their chimney.
20:35What's this?
20:36From your handbag?
20:38What is?
20:39This.
20:41Who is it?
20:43Search me, Jeff.
20:45It's not mine.
20:47A wet kitten
20:47has just fallen
20:48out of your handbag.
20:50What?
20:50I don't see
20:51how it could have.
20:52I'll be true,
20:55sweet ruby-roo,
20:58to you.
21:01To you.
21:03Can I look at it,
21:04please, Jeff?
21:06Oh, I don't know.
21:08I'm not sure.
21:11Now, kitten.
21:13Oh, I know who it is.
21:15He comes here sometimes.
21:17I've danced with him.
21:18He says he's in films
21:19or something.
21:2124-carat nutcase he is.
21:23Silly idiot.
21:24Must have stuffed
21:25his photo in my bag.
21:27Honestly, Jeff,
21:28those boys are so stupid.
21:30They're always
21:30nicking my picky
21:31from the showcase
21:32in the foyer.
21:35Always was.
21:37Nicking my picky,
21:38course.
21:40Nicking my picky.
21:41I don't think Mr. Jefferson
21:51quite believed her.
21:53He was on edge
21:54all that day.
21:56He completely
21:57lost his temper
21:58in the afternoon
21:59with his broker
21:59on the phone.
22:01All the things
22:02returned to normal,
22:03of course,
22:03but I fancy
22:04he was more watchful
22:06of her from then on.
22:08He asked her more questions
22:09about what she was doing.
22:11Did you see the photograph?
22:13No, sir.
22:15What do you think
22:16he would have done
22:17had he discovered
22:18she had a secret lover?
22:21Quite honestly, sir,
22:22I think...
22:22in his state of health,
22:25I think it would have
22:26finished him.
22:27Thanks very much
22:34for coming in, then, sir.
22:35Glad to have been
22:36of some help, Inspector.
22:37I hope you don't feel
22:38you've wasted your time.
22:40Not at all.
22:44Forensic lab.
22:48Drive carefully, then, sir.
22:51Cheerio, Inspector.
22:53Bye now.
22:53Now, you will tell
23:13the inspector
23:14about the dress,
23:14won't you?
23:15This is Ruby Keane's dress
23:17we're talking about,
23:18isn't it?
23:18Of course.
23:20The idea is,
23:21isn't it,
23:21that she changed
23:22her dress
23:23and then went off
23:24to meet someone?
23:25A man, it may be supposed.
23:27That is the general impression.
23:28Well, it won't do.
23:30If Ruby was going to wear
23:31the kind of dress
23:32she was wearing,
23:33then she'd make sure
23:34it was her best one.
23:35Girls do.
23:37Then why didn't she?
23:40Now, that is the key
23:41to the whole business.
23:43good, I think that's all
23:53the questions
23:53I've got for you now.
23:55Thank you, Jenny.
23:56I've interviewed all six
24:11girls, Miss Marple.
24:26I really don't think
24:28that...
24:28Yes, yes.
24:29I should like to speak
24:31to Flory Small.
24:32Did you notice her
24:33as she went out?
24:34She relaxed too soon.
24:36Flory Small?
24:45Flory Small?
24:48It's all right.
24:50We just want to have
24:50another word with you.
24:51I think it'll be okay.
25:13You are sure then, Flory,
25:15are you?
25:16That you've told us everything?
25:17I'd rather hear you
25:22say it out loud, Flory.
25:26Yes.
25:29You must be a brave girl
25:30and make a clean breast
25:32of things.
25:36Flory Small,
25:37if you refuse to tell us
25:38what you know,
25:40it will be a very serious
25:41matter indeed.
25:42Very serious.
25:44Practically perjury.
25:45And for that,
25:47as you know,
25:49you can be sent to prison.
25:54No.
25:55Now, Florence,
25:56don't prevaricate.
25:57Tell me everything
25:57you know at once.
25:59Pamela was not going
26:00to Woolworths,
26:01was she?
26:04Something to do
26:05with films,
26:06wasn't it?
26:09Wasn't it, Flory?
26:13Yes.
26:15Yes, it was.
26:17Oh, miss,
26:18I've been ever so worried.
26:20I can't tell you.
26:22I've hardly eaten a thing.
26:24It's been horrible.
26:26See,
26:26I've promised poor Pammy.
26:29Promised.
26:31All Edwards could tell me
26:33was that Ruby Keane
26:34referred to the chap
26:35in the photograph
26:36as something to do
26:38with films.
26:38Blake again.
26:40Blake is Inspector
26:41Slack's favourite.
26:43He lied about his movements
26:44on the night of the crime,
26:45and now we've found
26:46some hairs on the
26:47upholstery of his car.
26:48We're having them
26:48checked against those
26:49we found on Ruby Keane's dress.
26:51Ah, now,
26:52talking about this dress,
26:54there's something
26:55I should like to suggest.
26:56Yes?
26:56Eh,
26:58look here, Melchard,
26:59you don't think
27:00I'm interfering,
27:01do you?
27:01I suspect you're going
27:03to talk about
27:03Miss Marple again,
27:04aren't you?
27:05All right.
27:06What did she ask
27:07you to tell me?
27:08Well,
27:09it's about the girl's dress.
27:10What we've been...
27:11Miss Marple says
27:12it's the key
27:14to the whole business.
27:18Now, Flory,
27:19take your time, dear,
27:21and tell us
27:21what Pammy told you.
27:24That's when we were
27:25walking up the lane
27:25to the bus,
27:27on the way to the rally,
27:30which she told me.
27:32Pammy asked me
27:33if I could keep a secret.
27:35Well, can you?
27:36Of course I can.
27:37Swear it.
27:38I swear.
27:39Promise, Pammy,
27:40I won't tell.
27:41Do you remember
27:42when we went shopping
27:43last time?
27:45Yes.
27:45I didn't only do that.
27:47I met a man.
27:49Pammy.
27:50Oh, it's all right.
27:51Nothing like that.
27:52What then?
27:53Oh, you picked me up
27:54all right on the front.
27:56Just started talking to me.
27:58What about?
27:59Three guesses
27:59what I'm going to do
28:00after the rally
28:01this afternoon.
28:03Pammy, you're not.
28:05Not that dope.
28:07Give up.
28:08Film test.
28:09I'm going to be tested
28:10for a film.
28:12Get off.
28:13That's what I reckoned
28:14at first.
28:15He's told me
28:15I mustn't be disappointed.
28:17He's looking for
28:18a particular type,
28:19he says,
28:19and he won't be able
28:20to tell him
28:21until he sees me
28:21on film.
28:22But Pammy,
28:23how do you know,
28:24well, you know,
28:25that all he was
28:25terribly businesslike,
28:27if there was a contract,
28:29he'd reckon my parents
28:29should get a solicitor
28:30to look at it.
28:32And I'm going to be
28:33chaperoned at the test.
28:35A woman will be there
28:36all the time
28:37to help me.
28:38Someone who really
28:39knows what's happening.
28:40Oh, Pammy,
28:41that's amazing.
28:42And where was Pamela
28:43supposed to meet him?
28:46At his hotel.
28:49You don't know
28:49which one?
28:51No, she didn't say.
28:54And where was this
28:55supposed film test
28:56to take place?
28:59He said they had
29:00a small studio
29:01in Danemouth.
29:04I see.
29:06I should have stopped
29:07her.
29:07I should have.
29:10I should have.
29:16Kelly.
29:18Tis got you, sir.
29:19Good.
29:20What is it, Slack?
29:21The lab, sir.
29:23The hairs we found
29:24on the girl's dress
29:24are identical
29:25with those we took
29:26from Blake's car.
29:27Congratulations.
29:29Good work.
29:31I had a feeling
29:32it would be
29:32ordinary police work
29:33that would crack
29:33this one, sir.
29:36What about
29:36the second murder?
29:37Have you tied that in yet?
29:39I think that's
29:39only a matter of time.
29:41The lab says
29:42we can have something
29:42barrister-proof by morning.
29:44Then we'll pull Blake in.
29:46Once we've got a charge
29:47that sticks,
29:48I'll get the second
29:48murder out of him easily.
29:50I wouldn't be
29:51too sure about that.
29:52Why do you say that, sir?
29:54Well, I checked him
29:54out a bit myself, you know.
29:55He was a conscientious
29:56objector during the war.
29:57That'd be par for the course.
29:59Yes, he joined
29:59the fire service
30:00auxiliary.
30:01Got the George medal.
30:04Good night, Slack.
30:04Oh, I am so glad
30:23you're here.
30:24May I come in?
30:26Sure.
30:27Why not?
30:28Take a pew.
30:42I beg your pardon.
30:43Park your...
30:44Would you like to sit down?
30:46Oh.
30:48So what is it this time?
30:56This time?
30:57So far, I've had
30:58the Knave Restoration Fund,
30:59the Needlework Guild,
31:01the Bishop's Appeal
31:02for Deep Sea Fishermen.
31:03What are you?
31:04Boy Scouts
31:05or unmarried mothers?
31:08All right.
31:10Don't answer that.
31:11You've only come
31:12to look around.
31:13I've taken to giving
31:14conducted tours
31:15and charging
31:15a couple of bob.
31:16Where would you
31:17like to start?
31:18The kitchen.
31:21I came to offer you
31:23some advice.
31:24Oh, my God!
31:25The League of Decency.
31:27Which I hope might help
31:28in the difficult time ahead.
31:30What are you talking about?
31:32I want to advise you
31:33most strongly
31:34not to continue
31:35using your maiden name
31:36in the village.
31:38In a short while,
31:39you'll need
31:40all the goodwill
31:40you can find.
31:41And there's a prejudice
31:42in old-fashioned
31:43country places
31:44against people
31:45who are not married
31:46living together.
31:48Oh, it's amused you
31:49no doubt
31:49calling yourself
31:50Miss Lee
31:50when you are
31:51in fact Mrs. Blake.
31:53And it has helped
31:53to keep all
31:54but the most curious
31:56at a distance.
31:58But the time
31:59for such games
32:00is over.
32:05How did you know
32:06we were married?
32:07My dear,
32:08the way you quarrel.
32:10You quarrel like people
32:11who are tied to each other
32:12by more than a mere
32:13love affair, you see.
32:14You're astonishing.
32:16I thought you'd been
32:17to Somerset House
32:18or something.
32:20Oh.
32:22Somerset House.
32:29And the rest of it?
32:30I'm so sorry.
32:31Why are we going
32:32to need all this sympathy?
32:33Because almost certainly
32:37sometime today
32:38your husband
32:40will be arrested
32:40for murder.
32:41But he didn't do it!
32:42I know he didn't, dear.
32:43I know, but that's not
32:44the point now.
32:46I'm glad he's told you
32:47about it.
32:48They shouldn't have got
32:49rid of the rug.
32:50What did he do with it?
32:50I burnt it.
32:58But you didn't clear
32:59up properly.
33:02Look,
33:03that would be enough.
33:07And your car.
33:09How thorough were you?
33:14Car.
33:18Not cut out for this,
33:19am I?
33:19How much do you know?
33:23I should like to know more.
33:26All right.
33:27I'll tell you.
33:28Dinah and I
33:29had a row.
33:30I left the studio
33:31party early.
33:33The truth is,
33:33I'd had a skinful.
33:34I'll gather my love
33:38in the same
33:40again
33:41and the future
33:45down an
33:46English lane
33:49and I've got a
33:50little
33:52drink.
33:54There's nothing
33:57in the same
33:59you
33:59you
34:00have been
34:01there's nothing
34:01to me.
34:01I'll get it.
34:02There's nothing
34:03you can do it.
34:03You can do it.
34:03I'll make it.
34:04I'll be there again.
34:04Oh, a visitor by my truth!
34:31Oi, oi!
34:34Wake up!
34:46I suppose I panicked.
34:48I just knew I had to get her out of the house.
35:03I had no idea where I was going.
35:16I just drove and drove.
35:31You maniac!
35:32Then I found myself going past Gossington Hall.
35:44Suddenly, that seemed to be the answer.
35:59I'm going to go after Gossington Hall.
36:00I'm going to take you off and go back to the house.
36:03I thought you were going to be on a slight map.
36:07Let's go.
36:37Let's go.
37:08Bantry can be an appallingly pompous ass, you know.
37:13It seems so wonderfully incongruous.
37:17A girl like that.
37:19His library.
37:20It's a cruel trick.
37:22I know.
37:24But didn't you know who it was?
37:26No.
37:28I hardly knew Ruby Keane.
37:31And the face was...
37:32Yes.
37:33Yes.
37:34What are we going to do about this, Blake?
37:37Well, may I suggest that you engage the very best of lawyers?
37:43The police.
37:44I won't be a moment, Inch.
38:08Yes, ma'am.
38:09Ah.
38:10Jane, thank goodness you're here.
38:12We've been trying to get in touch with you all morning.
38:14Come in.
38:15Oh, I can't stay, Dolly.
38:16But I thought I'd better bring you the news.
38:18News?
38:19Basil Blake has just been arrested for the murder of Ruby Keane.
38:23Blake?
38:24He didn't do it.
38:26How do you know?
38:27He did, however, deposit the body in your library.
38:31Well, like Tommy Bond and his frog, he resented his teacher.
38:34So he put his frog in her clock and it jumped out at her.
38:37Blake?
38:38In my library?
38:40What on earth did he do that for?
38:42I think he did it as a kind of joke.
38:44What?
38:45Well, of course, he was drunk.
38:48Oh, was he?
38:49So that was it.
38:51Ah, well.
38:51But who did do it, then?
38:54Well, I think the answer to that lies in London.
38:57Yes, now, London.
38:59In should we hurry?
38:59We can catch the ten o'clock.
39:01Come along.
39:01Yes, ma'am.
39:11I'm not sure you should be seen with me, old man.
39:13Oh?
39:13How's that?
39:14Suspect number one.
39:16Top of the list.
39:16Oh, come off it, Gaskell.
39:19What is it?
39:20There's certainly somebody I don't want to be seen with.
39:22Excuse me for the King of Wimbledon, will you?
39:27Not the subtlest of human beings, is he?
39:29I don't know why he has to be so bloody rude about it.
39:32Hardly spoken to the man.
39:34What are you drinking?
39:35Look here, Star, I think there's something you should understand about Adelaide.
39:40What's that?
39:40Well, you do realise that Adelaide believes in the code of the Jeffersons, don't you?
39:45What does that mean?
39:46Well, it just means that true Jeffersons aren't in the habit of marrying tennis players, old
39:51boy.
39:52That's all.
39:54Other whisky, please?
39:55Afternoon, Ray.
40:08Ray?
40:08What is it, Ray?
40:09Ray?
40:09Mr. Jefferson is expecting you.
40:26Right.
40:27I'm off, then.
40:29Lucky you.
40:30Pine, pine, down the local.
40:31Not a hope.
40:32Back to HQ.
40:33Another session with Blake.
40:34Stubborn, isn't he?
40:35By midnight.
40:36One confession, signed and sealed.
40:37Would you want a bit?
40:39Slack?
40:43I wonder if we could have a word.
40:46Of course, sir.
40:48Miss Marple.
40:49Oh, do you hear?
40:50Yes, yes.
40:53I've just returned from London.
40:55Somerset House, you know.
40:58May I just think, perhaps...
41:00At our request, Conway Jefferson has informed Mrs. Jefferson and Mr. Gastel that, as Ruby
41:11Keene is dead, he's going to endow a fund with the Β£100,000 that he had intended to settle
41:16on her.
41:17The fund is to be used to establish a hostel for young dancers in London.
41:21Right, yes.
41:22He has also told them that he's going to finalise the details with his solicitor tomorrow.
41:28Now, this is what I want done.
41:31It'll be dark in a couple of hours, so we've got to move quickly.
41:33Let's see.
42:03Let's see.
42:33Let's see.
43:03George, put Mary the boot for me, will you? Good man.
43:14Mary, cancel breakfast for me tomorrow, will you? I'm motoring to town.
43:18Oh, I'm frightfully sorry.
43:21Oh, if anybody should want me tonight, they can ring me at my flat.
43:24I'm in the book. Be back about lunchtime tomorrow.
43:26All right.
43:33Oh, my God.
44:03Oh, my God.
44:33Oh, my God.
44:35Oh, come on.
44:37Oh, my God.
44:39Oh, my God.
44:41Oh, my God.
44:43Oh, my God.
44:45Oh, my God.
44:47Oh, my God.
44:49Oh, my God.
44:51Oh, my God.
44:53Let's go.
45:23Let's go.
45:53Let's go.
46:23Let's go.
46:53Good.
46:55Good.
46:57I couldn't get away from that hundred thousand pounds.
47:00That, I felt, was the key to it.
47:01But whether it was Mrs. Jefferson or Mr. Gaskell eluded me.
47:05They both had solid alibis.
47:07And it wasn't till Dinah Lee mentioned Somerset House marriage.
47:11Of course.
47:13And as we since discovered, Mark Gaskell was married to Josie Turner.
47:17And they were keeping it a secret until Mr. Jefferson should die, which they hoped might be soon.
47:23Do you see?
47:24No, Miss Marple, I'm afraid I don't.
47:27Hardly a thing.
47:28Well, of course, it was the nails that worried me.
47:31Although Ruby Keene had cut hers quite short, the poor girl in the library had bitten hers.
47:37It just wasn't right.
47:39Too like a book to be true.
47:40And then, of course, I realized finally that the body in the library wasn't Ruby Keene at all.
47:47Well, then, whose body was it?
47:51Pamela Reeves.
47:53And Pamela Reeves' fake film producer was Mark Gaskell?
47:57Yes.
47:57But the person behind it all was Josie.
48:01It was obvious from the first that she was a very capable woman.
48:04Quite capable of engineering the whole thing.
48:07It was a very clear-sighted plan.
48:10And quite remorseless.
48:12Mark Gaskell was her ticket for wealth and a good position.
48:15And nothing, certainly not little Ruby Keene, was going to stop her.
48:20It was all her own idea.
48:21The double murder and the substitute body.
48:25And she cold-bloodedly chose Basil Blake as chief murder suspect.
48:29She put his snapshot into Ruby's handbag.
48:32She mentioned this film bloke to the police.
48:36And, of course, she was poor little Pamela's so-called chaperone for the film test.
48:40She bleached her hair, painted her bitten nails, made her up as Ruby Keene,
48:46put her into one of Ruby's dresses, and finally drugged her,
48:51ready for the deadly attentions of Mark Gaskell.
48:53Who then completed the plan by getting her out to Blake's cottage shortly after ten o'clock,
48:59killing her and getting back to the hotel.
49:00So, at the time when the doctor said that she'd die,
49:05Gaskell and Josie had a perfect alibi.
49:07They were sitting there, playing bridge,
49:09watching the real Ruby Keene alive and dancing.
49:11After giving Ruby something earlier in the evening to make her head achy and sleepy,
49:16Josie told her then to go up to her, that is, Josie's room,
49:19and lie down till her next dance,
49:21knowing that the drug would shortly have full effect.
49:24It was when she went up to change for her exhibition dance
49:28that Josie killed her.
49:31She strangled the poor child in her sleep.
49:35And later that evening,
49:37she and Gaskell dressed her in the guide's uniform,
49:39stole Bartlett's car,
49:41drove up to Venn's quarry,
49:42and incinerated the lot.
49:45Tell me,
49:46that tune that was racketing around in your head,
49:49Mozart, didn't you say?
49:51What bearing did that have on the case?
49:53Oh, yes.
49:55Oh, yes, most interesting.
49:56The marriage of Figaro,
49:58Susanna's aria.
49:59It was because Susanna was dressed up as the Countess.
50:03It was the wrong dress.
50:05That's all.
50:07So it all boils down to fingernails and Mozart.
50:10Yes, quite.
