00:00He was synonymous with one of the biggest fast food chains in the world.
00:12His weight loss journey not only was good for business, but it also inspired millions
00:16across the nation.
00:18However, behind the scenes, he was involved in very disgusting habits that would land
00:23him in prison.
00:25Let's take a look back at Jared, the subway spokesman that fooled us all.
00:31After working a typical 9 to 5 shift, many find making dinner to be somewhat of a hassle.
00:37The alternative for most of us is to just drive over to a nearby fast food place and order
00:42something hot and ready.
00:46While this is a relatively quick and easy way to solve our hunger problem, it usually isn't
00:51the healthiest solution.
00:54Fast items on restaurant menus routinely will be high in salt, extremely greasy and full
00:59of calories.
01:01But constant visits to the drive-through will most likely lead to unfavorable results for
01:05one's health.
01:07And that would be the story for Jared Fogle.
01:10For years Jared lived an unhealthy lifestyle with a poor diet that consisted of mostly junk
01:15food.
01:17When he graduated high school, he found himself morbidly obese, weighing nearly 430 pounds.
01:25Fogle vowed to clean up his act once and for all, and came up with a rather unusual plan
01:29to shed the fat without cutting out restaurant food completely.
01:34Among the giants in the fast food industry, Subway was considered one of the healthiest and
01:38least expensive options for eating out.
01:41The chain has always allowed consumers to fully customize their sandwiches with an assortment
01:46of lean meats and fresh vegetables.
01:50Jared would implement a diet of two Subway footlongs a day and make an effort to walk daily
01:54for exercise.
01:57Almost like magic, he found success with the unique diet plan and he was able to slim down
02:02tremendously.
02:04The word would spread about his unusual transformation story, thanks to an article written about him
02:09in a local paper.
02:11Soon after the article gained some traction, Subway's marketing team would reach out to
02:15Jared for more details about what he was able to accomplish.
02:20In the end, they struck a lucrative deal with Jared to be a spokesman for the healthy restaurant
02:24chain.
02:25Soon the entire world learned about the man that was once extremely overweight, that strictly
02:31ate at Subway to lose hundreds of pounds.
02:50Jared was featured in numerous commercials, promoting the healthier alternative to juicy
02:55burgers and salty French fries.
02:59Fans dealing with weight issues were inspired by Fogle and his drastic change.
03:05Instead of buying a greasy meal, more and more people opted to get a sandwich from Subway
03:10due to the story of Jared.
03:13Jared being the focal point in advertising had helped the company grow tremendously over
03:17the years.
03:19For quite a while things were going good for the Subway spokesman.
03:23He was making great money, he started a family, and became fairly famous in a short amount
03:28of time.
03:30But the skeleton soon began to creep out of the closet.
03:34A few years after the successful venture with the chain, Jared established his very own non-profit
03:39foundation.
03:41Its mission was to spread childhood obesity awareness and provide tools for parents struggling with
03:46the issue within their family.
03:49On the surface, it seemed like a respectable endeavor, but more details would emerge that would suggest
03:54otherwise.
03:57In 2015, the lead director of the Jared Foundation Russell Taylor, was arrested for charges pertaining
04:04to sexual exploitation of minors, including possession of X-rated content.
04:10Russell along with his wife were found to be involved in predatory behavior, such as secretly
04:14filming underage girls inside their home.
04:18The evidence gathered was quite disturbing, and the findings led to them being sentenced
04:22to nearly 30 years in prison.
04:25Jared attempted to distance himself from the pair after they were arrested, but he too was
04:30about to get exposed, for having a very dark side as well.
04:34During the investigation that led to the arrest of the director and his wife.
04:39When their house was raided by law enforcement, they discovered hundreds of photos and videos
04:44of minors that had been traded with Jared.
04:48This gave the police probable cause to raid the home of Fogle and arrest the subway spokesman.
04:53The FBI acquired a large amount of incriminating evidence
05:16on his computers, phones, and storage devices that was quite undeniable.
05:22Including sexual text messages regarding minors, ranging from the ages of 9 to 16.
05:29Immediately and publicly, Subway wisely cut ties with their golden goose after the news broke.
05:35It was quite the black eye for the company, after championing him for well over a decade.
05:40His wife also decided to end their five-year marriage after the charges were filed.
05:46With all the evidence stacked against him, the 37-year-old Jared decided to take a plea
05:51deal, admitting to the sexual misconduct regarding minors.
05:55He was sentenced to nearly 16 years in federal prison.
05:59Shortly after his arrival, Jared was badly beaten by a fellow inmate, as his kind is often
06:05a target behind bars.
