00:00so she'd rang me that day and said to me and what time you finished workout will
00:12you throw some lashes on me before I go out she literally had the most infectious laugh ever
00:1930 year old single mom Nadine Lott is getting ready for a festive night out she was going out
00:28for her auntie's birthday she'd always love a good night out that's kind of the way she was
00:36a young girl having fun with her friends I knew that he had sent just a text where are you what
00:46are you doing his obsession is that Nadine isn't out with her family she's out with another man
00:52I really think that this was something that was festering in his mind
00:59we went into the kitchen she was making gas and sounds you couldn't see her face
01:10it was like a scene out of a horror movie
01:16Nadine lives in the small Irish seaside town of Orkla with her young daughter
01:36she was a single mom she had her own apartment she was doing really really well
01:43she followed a career in the beauty industry so she followed her goal and she followed her aim
01:52so she had an idea of what she wanted to do and she followed it through
01:55going to work for Nadine was not a job she loved what she did she loved her colleagues
02:03she absolutely adored her clients built great relationships with them
02:08Nadine plans a relaxing day with friends and family in the lead-up to Christmas her ex of six years has been a
02:38the Bye-bye
02:39alive and she was in the hospital in the murder of three three hours and theurs
02:44the brothers agreed to babysit their daughter 32-year-old Daniel murder an amateur MMA fighter from Dublin
02:49remains involved in his daughter's life we were all on a spa day and Nadine said to me
02:52everything is civil everything is going well long may it last Nadine actually thought that he possibly was seeing somebody else
03:03she said he's in good form. And I hope he is. I hope he's seen somebody else.
03:09Murta had been obsessing over his ex-girlfriend Nadine, but appears to have taken steps to
03:15stabilize his life, outwardly showing signs of greater maturity and a renewed focus on
03:21his role as a father.
03:22Every weekend for him was training hard during the week, you know, and engaging in the odd
03:34mixed martial art fight.
03:37Stephen Breen is an established Irish crime journalist.
03:43Nadine still included Daniel Murta in his daughter's life, despite the previous behaviour being quite
03:50intimidating, but she still wanted to include him. That reflects her caring nature.
04:01Nadine has invited Daniel to come and watch their daughter in her school nativity.
04:11He was coming down for the show and she was going to rent his birthday party after it.
04:17I was aware that she would have to confirm to him that your relationship is with your daughter.
04:28There is no relationship with me.
04:33Murta would stay the night before taking his daughter back to Dublin the next day to go Christmas
04:39shopping.
04:39They had gone through the whole bad patch and now he was being okay again.
04:50But unknown to Nadine and her family, Daniel Murta hasn't given up the dream of rekindling
04:57the relationship.
04:58You have to think of Murta's mindset and what was going through his head when he was coming down to
05:06Arklo to attend his daughter's nativity play.
05:09Again, you go back to his ego.
05:11You go back to his sense of delusion where he's been invited down to Arklo.
05:15Is this an opportunity for him to reconnect with Nadine?
05:19Is this an opportunity for him to start their relationship again?
05:22I think he was being nice because he had some sort of mad illusion that, you know, him and Nadine
05:32were going to give it a go.
05:33There was no doubt in any of our minds that there was nothing going on there.
05:39We all met in her apartment, went to the show.
05:44Murta was at the show as well.
05:46And I always remember coming out of that show.
05:50Nadine came out behind me and she just said, see you later.
05:54And that was the last time I seen her in life.
06:01Nadine has just dropped her daughter back at her apartment.
06:10Daniel Murta is to babysit at her home.
06:13The first time this has happened since the couple split six years ago.
06:18She trusted him to look after their child while she went out with her family to celebrate a family event.
06:28Nadine was going to her auntie's 50th birthday in the local pub.
06:34The last night that I spent with Nadine, we came to Christie's Bar and Lounge for a meal with my family.
06:43This is actually where we parked our cars.
06:46Nadine's car was parked here.
06:48She came a little bit later because she was bringing the birthday cake with her.
07:00It's a very special occasion.
07:01They've been to the Nativity Play.
07:03They're going to a family birthday party.
07:04It's Christmas.
07:06She's enjoying herself.
07:08Nadine was so happy that night.
07:10I mean, she was so upbeat.
07:13Making plans for Christmas.
07:17There's nothing about her on that night that would have said to me that I didn't think to be concerned about.
07:27About 12 of us all sitting around talking at a table.
07:30With Irish people, we all talk over each other, so there's a lot of chat.
07:36Nadine wasn't sitting right beside me.
07:38Nadine was sitting beside my father because she took on the role after my mother of supporting my father.
07:46He was saying she was his date for the night.
07:48He had been calling her that night to see where she was or what time she was coming home at.
07:59There's clearly an element of delusion there because his obsession is that Nadine isn't out with her family.
08:22She's like, there's another man.
08:23Why isn't she out with me?
08:25She's on a date with someone else.
08:26Why isn't she home yet?
08:27And thereby undermining his ego and undermining his image.
08:31I said I was going to go, but I'd only had a baby.
08:37She was only a couple of months old at the time, so I kind of just backed out at the end.
08:42And I still think about that.
08:44If I did go out, it would have been different because I would have walked her home.
08:48I only live kind of two or three minutes up the road.
08:50Would I have walked up and would it have been different?
08:52Arclough is a seaside town on the east coast of Ireland.
09:10It's a very vibrant community.
09:12People from all kinds of life live in Arclough.
09:15It's not far from Dublin, only an hour's drive away.
09:17It's a popular town, people who want to live near the seaside, but still work in the city.
09:28We go back generations.
09:30I was born here.
09:32My parents and grandparents on both sides are all Arclough.
09:37So our family are very integrated here.
09:47Nadine Lott, born in 1989, is the second of four children to David and Clare Lott.
09:54My earliest memory of Nadine was actually when she was born.
09:58When you looked at her, she had two big brown eyes.
10:02And that stuck with me forever.
10:05She loved other kids being around her.
10:09People would actually look forward to babysitting her
10:11because it would bring happiness into the room when she'd walk in, even as a child.
10:14My earliest memory was probably Christmas.
10:20Nadine got a Polaroid camera and we took a picture and were like messy hair, pajamas.
10:25And we looked absolutely ridiculous.
10:27But I think I was only about five or six at the time.
10:30But it sums up mine and Nadine's relationship.
10:32It was always about fun and capturing a memory.
10:36Nadine always brought the fun to my childhood.
10:37I remember Nadine as my baby.
10:46My fun, loving baby who, as she grew, became one of my best friends.
10:57Young Nadine quickly develops into an ambitious person.
11:01Her passions are fashion and beauty.
11:04She's busy.
11:05Nadine!
11:06She knew very early on she wanted to go into makeup.
11:12She knew she wanted to be a beautician.
11:14There was no question around it.
11:16She was one of those children who knew exactly what she wanted to do.
11:19And she also knew exactly what she needed to do to get that.
11:24You just felt like she knew what she was doing.
11:27She had it all worked out.
11:28She knew what she was doing and now she knew what she wanted.
11:30She was very cute, so confident, really just such a kind girl.
11:36We always say that Nadine was, like, the real glue to our group.
11:43I was the total opposite to her.
11:47She was a social butterfly.
11:48She just brought that out in me.
11:50She was such a genuine person that you actually really believed in every word that she said
11:55and you felt invincible with her.
12:10Like many young people, Nadine has dreams of adventure and opportunity.
12:13So, at the age of 23, she decides to follow her friends to Australia.
12:24I remember, like, yesterday, the day she was leaving.
12:28She had worked extremely hard to get this money to go to Australia.
12:32She did it all herself.
12:34She didn't want support to do that.
12:35Like many of her friends and, indeed, across many towns, across Ireland,
12:39people went to Australia for a better life, for adventure
12:43and just to experience something different.
12:52After arriving in Perth, Nadine plans to take a short trip to Darwin.
12:57But whilst there, her plans suddenly change.
13:01I was going to Perth as well, but I thought Nadine was going to be in Perth as well,
13:04but she hadn't come back down from Darwin because she'd met Dan.
13:09Nadine has met Daniel Murta, a 26-year-old from Dublin
13:13and an amateur mixed martial arts enthusiast.
13:16He's been working as a labourer in Australia for the previous 18 months.
13:22Murta was someone who was very athletic.
13:24He was very focused on his image.
13:26But he was also very charming as well.
13:30I think she was living in a world that was like paradise.
13:32And they had a good relationship in Australia,
13:35so life would have been looking good for her over there.
13:39It was all fun and it was literally like the holiday romance.
13:43I was like, what's he like?
13:45She was like, oh, yeah, he's really fun, really fun.
13:48But not someone that you'd bring home to your mum, either.
13:50But Nadine is unaware of Daniel Murta's troubling reputation back in Dublin.
14:01Growing up, Daniel Murta was a bit of a loner, acted as a bit of a bully,
14:05was involved in numerous fights, but they were always kids who were a lot younger
14:08and not smaller than he was.
14:10But as he grew older, he became fascinated by martial arts.
14:13It was all about looking after himself and training hard during the week,
14:17you know, and engaging in the odd mixed martial art fight.
14:22He needed someone like Nadine, who was, you know, a beautiful young woman.
14:26People saw Nadine as like a trophy to him,
14:29where it wasn't just about him and her having this loving relationship.
14:33It was about him having someone that fitted his image.
14:36But the holiday romance is about to be tested.
14:42After just nine months in Australia, Nadine makes a discovery.
14:47She's pregnant.
14:51So she had phoned me and she was like,
14:53oh, my God, oh, my God, you're not going to believe I'm pregnant.
14:56And I was like, OK, well, you need to tell mum.
15:01I just knew. I just knew.
15:03I had that deep feeling.
15:05I knew what she was going to tell me.
15:07So when she said it to me, it wasn't a shock.
15:31Nadine came home almost immediately after finding out
15:33that she was pregnant.
15:35All we wanted to do was get her home and give her a hug
15:37and say, everything will be all right.
15:39And we loved her even more because she was pregnant.
15:45There was absolutely never a doubt.
15:47She wanted her baby.
15:49And that was it.
15:53However, instead of returning to Ireland with his pregnant girlfriend,
15:57Daniel Murtagh decides to stay behind in Australia.
16:00I think that showed his narcissism and how selfish he was
16:05because even then, his focus was on staying in Australia
16:08rather than returning to Ireland straight away.
16:13In November 2013, Nadine gives birth to a baby girl.
16:18She was so natural with it.
16:21She absolutely adored her.
16:25She loved that all the family made such a fuss
16:28and how much we all loved her.
16:32Took to motherhood like a duck to water.
16:35It was natural for her.
16:35Daniel Murtagh has by now returned to Ireland from Australia
16:47to be reunited with Nadine and the couple's daughter.
16:51For her, the most important thing was
16:54providing a strong family network for her child.
16:57And part of that family network included
16:58having the child's father in her life.
17:01So Nadine was determined to make this work.
17:06They moved in here.
17:08And he was always talking about the next big job he was going to have.
17:11He always had the next business venture in mind,
17:14but none of it ever, ever materialised.
17:21After a few months of finding their feet,
17:23the young couple move in together
17:25in an apartment in Ocklow's Marina District.
17:27But Nadine's friends are starting to have doubts
17:33about Daniel Murtagh.
17:34He wasn't consistently there like a father should be.
17:39He didn't want the whole family side of life.
17:41He just wanted her.
17:42And he didn't want the responsibilities
17:44that came having a family either.
17:46Like he was all into his gym and his MMA fighting.
17:49Like he did come across kind of,
17:52like, you know, look at me, I have the muscles
17:53and look at the girl I've got.
17:57That he did not deserve.
17:58And it isn't long before Nadine realises
18:02she's made a mistake.
18:05They were probably in that apartment a few weeks
18:08and Nadine decided, no, it wasn't working.
18:12He moved out and she was much happier.
18:17But she always wanted her daughter to know
18:21who her father was and have a relationship.
18:23And that was very important to her.
18:26So she maintained a relationship through contact.
18:34Daniel Murtagh moves back to his family home in Dublin.
18:38But he keeps tabs on Nadine's whereabouts.
18:43He definitely had somebody down here
18:44who was able to tell him what Nadine was doing.
18:46He would send her text messages and say,
18:50and what were you doing with this person
18:51or in this place?
18:55He knew what she was doing
18:57or who she was seeing, yeah.
19:03She was single.
19:05It was completely within her life
19:07to do that if she wanted to.
19:09And the next morning she got abusive texts
19:12about who had she been out with.
19:17He had this delusion
19:19that perhaps one day they could get back together
19:21and be a family again.
19:24Murtagh was on the outside looking in.
19:27He could clearly see that she was going places.
19:30He could clearly see that she had a future.
19:32And he couldn't cope with that because of his ego,
19:34because everything about him
19:36was all focused on what he could get out of this relationship.
19:42Nadine Lott, now living in her own home in Arclough Island,
19:57has just begun a new job as a beautician
19:59at a well-known Dublin beauty salon.
20:05She wanted to be in the beauty industry.
20:07She followed that dream.
20:09Any problems along the way, Nadine would think about them.
20:12Find a solution for them and tackle them straight ahead.
20:16She had a certain vibrancy about her.
20:19She wasn't just looking for a job.
20:21She was looking to become a part of something.
20:25She loved it.
20:26She's always had the passion for beauty
20:27and I think this was like an extra step.
20:33Nadine's ex, Daniel Murtagh,
20:35continues to care for their daughter every other weekend
20:38and becomes increasingly aware
20:40of Nadine's newfound success in financial stability.
20:47I think he was jealous of Nadine
20:51and how successful she was in her career
20:54and how she was getting on with her life
20:56and she had a lovely little life for herself.
21:13Nadine, raised in a close loving family,
21:16dreams of the same for her own daughter.
21:19Since their child's birth,
21:21Daniel Murtagh has remained part of their lives,
21:24quietly holding on to the hope
21:26of one day reuniting with Nadine.
21:30Eventually, Murtagh suggests a fresh start.
21:33We always just thought that he just wanted
21:37to have Nadine for himself.
21:39She was gorgeous.
21:40I'd say he was kicking himself that he ever let her go.
21:44I think she always wanted a perfect family.
21:49So she always wanted her daughter
21:52to have a relationship with her father.
21:56Three years after they first separated,
21:59Nadine decides to give the relationship
22:01with Daniel Murtagh another chance
22:03and begins looking for an appropriate house
22:05for the family to move into.
22:08As a best friend, you support them no matter what
22:11and you'll stick by them
22:11even though you know you're going to be
22:14picking up the pieces again.
22:17He wasn't mature.
22:19He wasn't extremely bright.
22:20But there must be something there
22:24that would make him eventually want to be a dad
22:27to this absolutely amazing child.
22:31Having signed the contract to rent a family home,
22:36Nadine has high expectations for her family's future.
22:41Everything was done.
22:42They were due to move in on, I think, it was the Monday.
22:49The day that they were supposed to move into the house,
22:52nobody could locate him.
22:54It was my 21st, so it was a big moment in my life
23:02and I remember blowing out my candles
23:05and Nadine running, crying.
23:08And it was a couple of days later
23:10that she made contact with him
23:13but he made it very clear that
23:15he didn't want this,
23:17he didn't want to move in together
23:19and to make that moment.
23:22When it came to the crunch, he ran.
23:26She just tried over and over again
23:28for her family to make a go of it
23:30but that was the last straw.
23:33She had told everyone about the excitement
23:35of her moving into this house with her daughter
23:37and, you know, getting this family unit
23:39and she was embarrassed.
23:41She was absolutely done after that.
23:43She was quick to let him know
23:45that there was nothing ever going to happen ever again.
23:59Despite Nadine making it clear to Daniel
24:03that any possibility of them rekindling their relationship
24:06has now disappeared,
24:08he again begins to keep a close eye on Nadine
24:11and any possible new relationships
24:13he suspects she's involved in.
24:16She was trying to make it clear
24:17that she did not want him
24:18and there was never going to be a relationship there again
24:20so he was just convinced
24:21if she doesn't want me, she must have somebody else
24:24but at that time she actually didn't have anybody else.
24:26We could clearly see glimpses of his behaviour
24:31and his disdain for Nadine
24:34and that included him sending text messages.
24:38I know who he is, I know where you are,
24:41I know where you're going.
24:46She'd never give him, like, you know,
24:47that reaction that he's looking for.
24:49He'd be trying to get her riled up
24:50and she was like, I'm not going to reply to that.
24:53She was always looking at him.
24:54She'd say, look at these messages, not replying.
24:57Though she didn't know what way
24:58she could stop it from happening,
25:01she never thought about going further
25:02and reporting it or anything
25:03because I don't think she thought
25:04there was any seriousness in it.
25:09Although there was no sign of any violence
25:11during their relationship
25:12when they were together,
25:14this was a precursor, perhaps,
25:16to what he did do eventually
25:17and it showed his intent.
25:26the relationship that they had
25:37was just because of her daughter.
25:39That was all it was.
25:45This showed her caring nature
25:47because he was the father of their child.
25:50She said to me, I remember,
25:56I couldn't give him an inkling
25:57that we would ever be a chance
25:59of us getting back together
26:00because we're finally co-parenting
26:02quite well now.
26:03Absolutely no way
26:19would Nadine
26:21have allowed him
26:23to be with her daughter
26:25if she knew
26:27or suspected
26:28he was going to be drinking.
26:30That wouldn't have happened.
26:32There would have been
26:33alternative plans made.
26:40So we finished our meal.
26:41I didn't want to stay on.
26:43I wanted to go home.
26:44I was driving.
26:45So I brought my father
26:49in that home.
26:51Nadine had said
26:52she was going to stay
26:52and have a drink
26:54with a friend of mine
26:54and her husband.
26:57And when I got home,
26:58it was raining.
27:00So I texted Nadine
27:01and said to Nadine,
27:02it doesn't matter what time,
27:03if you need a lift home,
27:04call me and I'll bring you home.
27:07And I never got an answer.
27:15Nadine asked
27:19could anyone find a taxi
27:20and I found a taxi.
27:22So, yeah, a local chap.
27:33Nadine arrives home
27:35to the smell of cannabis
27:36and to Daniel Murta
27:37who's been drinking heavily.
27:41At the end of the night,
27:42Nadine comes home
27:43to be with her daughter.
27:45Shortly after Nadine
27:47returns home,
27:48a neighbour reports
27:49the sounds of a disturbance.
27:53The negative feelings
27:54had reached boiling point
27:56and he was of the mindset
27:59that I am going to stop her
28:00from having a good life.
28:02I am going to stop her
28:03from having a relationship
28:05with someone else.
28:06His mindset was,
28:07if I can't have her,
28:08then no one can.
28:09And that's when he launched
28:10this ferocious attack
28:11against her.
28:15Daniel Murta,
28:16trained in mixed martial arts,
28:18unleashes a brutal
28:19and sustained assault.
28:22Murta would have known
28:24full well
28:24how Nadine
28:26took care of herself,
28:27how her image
28:28was very important to her.
28:29When he inflicted
28:30this damage upon her,
28:32he was used to using
28:33his fists.
28:34It was so violent
28:36and so sustained
28:38that he continued
28:39that attack
28:39to make sure that
28:40when he left Nadine
28:42lying there,
28:43no one would know
28:43who she was
28:44and she would be
28:45unrecognisable
28:46to those who loved her.
28:47What was going to hurt her
28:51most was to disfigure her.
28:53This was something
28:55that would really
28:56cause her the most pain
28:59was to change her look.
29:01So there did appear
29:02to be an element
29:03of vindictiveness,
29:04like it was being focused
29:06on changing her appearance,
29:08the thing that mattered
29:09so much to her.
29:10The neighbour,
29:18a former classmate
29:19of her younger sister,
29:20Phoebe,
29:21is concerned enough
29:22to raise the alarm
29:23and contacts both
29:24the Gardee
29:25and Nadine's family.
29:28She had basically rang
29:29to say that Dan
29:31had stabbed Nadine
29:32and we needed to come quick.
29:35I remember getting up
29:36just darting down
29:38to Mum's room.
29:39We were asleep
29:40and Phoebe
29:43came running down the hall
29:44and said,
29:45Mammy, quick,
29:46get up,
29:47we've to go into Nadine's.
29:49I remember his hole
29:50jumping into the car,
29:51what seemed like
29:52a two-second drive.
29:57That's when Murtagh
29:58then fled the scene
29:59and got into his car
30:00and tried to travel
30:01back to Dublin.
30:09First, Nadine's mother,
30:13brother and sister arrive.
30:15It's a chaotic scene.
30:16We were just running
30:18around the apartment
30:19trying to find her.
30:22We went into the kitchen.
30:25She was in the corner,
30:27just thrown in the corner
30:29and there was gloom
30:30to absolutely everywhere.
30:31She was making
30:34gasping sounds.
30:39You couldn't see her face
30:40but I kept telling her
30:42that you're okay,
30:44I'm here.
30:44Your baby's okay.
30:46Your baby's fine.
30:47Don't worry now.
30:48Everything's going to be okay.
30:49I remember my instinct
30:58to save my daughter
30:59kicking in.
31:03I'm doing what I need to do
31:05until the experts get here
31:07and save her.
31:12Nadine is taken to hospital
31:14by paramedics.
31:1764 injuries to her body.
31:19He better to a pulp.
31:24There wasn't practically
31:26a bone anywhere
31:27in Nadine's body.
31:28There wasn't broken.
31:32Nadine was beautiful.
31:34He did destroy her face.
31:37It's obviously where he
31:39really, really focused
31:41whatever was inside him.
31:43Murtaugh, meanwhile,
31:49has fled,
31:50attempting to escape
31:51in his car
31:52over the Wicklow Mountains.
31:54So Murtaugh's trying
31:55to flee the scene,
31:57trying to escape justice
31:58by leaving Arklow
31:59and heading back
32:00to his native Dublin.
32:03But he's going
32:04over the mountains.
32:04He's not going
32:05on the motorway.
32:06He's thinking that
32:07I can avoid
32:07any police checkpoints
32:09or any guarded checkpoints.
32:13What could instigate
32:15that in any human being
32:16to do it to anybody,
32:18never mind the mother
32:19of your child?
32:2134-year-old Daniel Murtaugh
32:39has just brutally attacked
32:41his ex-girlfriend,
32:43Nadine Lott.
32:44She has sustained
32:45multiple broken bones
32:46and a stab wound
32:47to the neck.
32:49Murtaugh has also
32:50mutilated her face
32:51before leaving her for dead.
32:54But whilst on the run
32:55over the Wicklow Mountains,
32:57Murtaugh crashes his car.
33:02He crashes the car
33:03and the first things
33:04he says to the members
33:07of the Gardaugh
33:07who came upon this accident
33:09were,
33:10I've just killed my wife
33:11and then this is followed
33:12by I've just killed
33:12my girlfriend.
33:15It got the investigators
33:16thinking as well,
33:17this is the individual
33:18we're looking for.
33:19It automatically gets
33:20the alarm bells ringing
33:21then so he will be
33:21brought in for questioning.
33:26Nadine Lott, meanwhile,
33:28has made it to hospital.
33:29She's still alive
33:30and being treated
33:31for her injuries.
33:35Numerous, numerous,
33:36numerous injuries.
33:37She was unrecognisable.
33:39She needed over 20,
33:41if not more,
33:42blood transfusions.
33:43They were trying to get
33:46all the details
33:46of what had actually
33:47happened,
33:48how bad was it.
33:49Phoebe could hardly talk.
33:51So I just said,
33:53look, go,
33:54do whatever you need,
33:54just keep us updated.
33:57We all just lost it,
33:58I think.
33:59We drove home in silence.
34:01We drove straight
34:02to the church.
34:05What else can you do?
34:06You don't know what to do
34:07in those situations.
34:08I don't know how we ended up
34:09in the church,
34:09but we did.
34:13The four of us sat there
34:14and this lady came over to us,
34:16said,
34:16are you in here
34:17for your friends?
34:17Because the whole town
34:18knew about it.
34:19And she gave us
34:20these little medals
34:21and she said,
34:22yous will be okay,
34:23yous will be okay.
34:38Nadine's friends
34:39organise a vigil,
34:40bringing the community
34:41together,
34:42lighting candles
34:43and praying
34:44for her survival.
34:48I was made aware
34:49that there was a vigil.
34:53And,
34:54you know,
34:57at the time,
34:57you're just thinking,
34:59okay,
34:59all of this,
35:00it just has to work.
35:02I don't even think
35:09an animal would do as bad
35:10to what he had left her like.
35:15It was absolutely horrific.
35:16Nothing could spark that.
35:19How he could do
35:20the damage that he did
35:21is just unfathomable.
35:24It's not a human,
35:25a monster,
35:26creature,
35:27I said,
35:27is just pure evil.
35:28They up read,
35:33but they just could not do
35:35anything to save her life.
35:36She was beaten so badly.
35:44And Nadine lived
35:46until the Tuesday
35:47at three o'clock.
35:48The nurse let us know
35:53when she had
35:54slipped away.
35:59Once I had formally
36:01identified her,
36:02they take her away,
36:03straight away.
36:04Her body now
36:05becomes
36:06evidence.
36:08It was a harrowing court case,
36:37Myrta adding more trauma
36:40and pain
36:41to Nadine's family.
36:44Horrific
36:45to have to sit
36:47in
36:48two feet
36:50of him.
36:52He was basically
36:52sitting beside us.
36:54During the court case,
36:56he would often smirk
36:57at the gallery.
36:58He didn't have many
36:59supporters in the gallery,
37:01unlike Nadine,
37:02who had her family,
37:03her friends there.
37:05Totally unbelievable
37:06for him to put us
37:07through a trial
37:08where we had to relive
37:09and be re-traumatised
37:11for the sake of him
37:12trying to get
37:12a leaner sentence.
37:16Myrta's defence team
37:17argues that his actions
37:18amount to manslaughter
37:20rather than murder.
37:21Claiming that Nadine
37:22was still his girlfriend,
37:24Myrta's legal team
37:25presents his attack
37:25as a moment
37:26of diminished responsibility
37:28in a case
37:29of domestic violence.
37:30There was no relationship.
37:34They were not
37:34living together.
37:36The only thing
37:37they had done together
37:38was have a child
37:41and were together
37:42for a very short
37:43period of time.
37:45He is trying to insist
37:47that he was drunk,
37:48he was high,
37:49you know,
37:50he didn't intend
37:50to kill her.
37:52But due to the level
37:53of violence,
37:54it was quite evident
37:55that he intended
37:56to kill Nadine.
37:57this was a premeditated murder
37:59because he couldn't
38:00be with her.
38:02I think it just shows
38:03the character
38:03of the Pepper Treader
38:04and what sort
38:05of individual he was.
38:07It shows he's
38:07disdain for Nadine.
38:10It shows he's
38:10disdain for our family.
38:12It shows the type
38:12of character he is.
38:13At the Central Criminal
38:27Court in Dublin,
38:30Daniel Murtagh
38:31is sentenced
38:32to prison.
38:35The jury gave
38:36a unanimous
38:37verdict
38:39and as each
38:41of them
38:41were walking out,
38:42acknowledged me.
38:45They all nodded.
38:47Nadine's family
38:48is now campaigning
38:49to change the law
38:50to increase
38:51the length of sentences
38:52in cases like this.
38:55It's like,
38:56what's life?
38:57What does that mean?
38:58He's got the maximum,
38:59he's got the minimum.
39:00What does this mean?
39:03And then
39:04you find out
39:05exactly what it means.
39:07Life isn't life
39:08in this country.
39:09And there are
39:10no degrees
39:12of
39:14homicide
39:16in this country.
39:18Anyone convicted
39:19of murder
39:20could only apply
39:21for parole
39:23after 12 years.
39:24But that's still
39:25something that
39:26Nadine's family
39:27will have to contend
39:27where they will have
39:29to make
39:30their resolutions
39:31and make their submissions
39:32as to why
39:33he shouldn't be freed.
39:34He gets to see
39:35those submissions
39:35but they don't get
39:36to see his.
39:37So that's one area
39:38of the law
39:38where many victims'
39:39families have concerns about
39:41but he has received
39:42a life sentence now
39:43so it'll be
39:43a long time
39:44before he's released
39:45from prison.
39:46But again,
39:47in 12 years' time
39:48he can still apply
39:48for parole
39:49and therefore
39:50cause more trauma
39:50to the family.
39:51I don't think
39:54I have any feelings
39:55towards him
39:56because I just
39:58don't even
39:59waste a second
40:00of my day
40:01giving him
40:02a thought.
40:03He's a waste of space
40:05and he's a waste of time
40:06so I don't
40:07waste my time.
40:09You can come to terms
40:10with something
40:10so horrific
40:12but we don't have closure.
40:14He took so much
40:15away from us.
40:15Turnout from
40:38Nadine's funeral
40:38was absolutely amazing.
40:44That was a great solace
40:45in itself.
40:45to see so many
40:46people there.
40:47The community
40:48was a great source
40:49of inspiration.
40:55Sometimes it's
40:56harder than others
40:56to come up
40:57cause she shouldn't
40:59be here.
41:01You know,
41:01she's only part of it.
41:04She'll sit here
41:05in disbelief
41:06when you see her name
41:07on the grave.
41:09You know?
41:11It just doesn't
41:13make any sense.
41:14It's just unbelievable.
41:16and unbearable.
41:21She was taken
41:22from everybody.
41:24Her love for life
41:25is something
41:25that I try to live by
41:26because
41:27she helped me
41:29so much.
41:31How one person
41:32can be a best friend
41:33to everybody
41:34is just
41:35a massive uniqueness
41:36as well.
41:36She lived life
41:41to the fullest.
41:42She was just
41:43always so happy
41:44and positive.
41:46A really
41:47great friend.
41:48We miss her so much.
41:51Everyone needs
41:52to remember
41:53and see Nadine
41:55for who she was
41:56not what happened
41:56to her.
41:57when anyone
41:59sees her photos
42:00it's always
42:01smiling,
42:02laughing.
42:03She was such
42:04a fun person.
42:06She's in every
42:07single conversation
42:08we have.
42:09She's part of
42:10our family
42:11and that's it.
42:13We talk about her,
42:14what she would have
42:15thought,
42:16what she would have
42:17done
42:17and I want her
42:19remembered
42:19for the caring,
42:21loving,
42:22beautiful person
42:23that she was.
42:26I'd like her to be
42:27remembered as a
42:28genuine,
42:29loving,
42:30caring,
42:31sensitive person.
42:34She was beautiful
42:35both inside and out.
42:47as a parent
42:49you're there
42:50to protect
42:50your child.
43:01I can hear
43:02my child screaming
43:03so I can hear
43:04her cries.
43:06So you know
43:06it's living with
43:07those nightmares,
43:09with those
43:09flashbacks,
43:11your sleepless nights,
43:12your anxieties
43:13and just the emptiness.
43:15It makes somebody
43:16who passes
43:17from an illness
43:18where you get
43:19that time to spend
43:20with them
43:20and say goodbye.
43:22We never got to say
43:23goodbye to Nadine.
43:28Was there something
43:29different you should
43:30have done on that
43:31night,
43:31you could have done
43:32on that night?
43:35That's what life
43:36is now.
43:38You live your life
43:39on what-ifs.
43:46In 2021,
43:48Daniel Murta
43:48is finally
43:49imprisoned
43:50for his brutal
43:50attack in
43:51Arklo,
43:52in which he condemned
43:53Nadine Lott,
43:54a loving mother,
43:56daughter,
43:57sister and friend,
43:58to her last night out.
44:00Tell him how to
44:01children's
44:14dead.
44:14He is in,
44:15under the
44:15grave.
44:17He is in,
44:18and he is in.
44:18No one.
44:19He is in,
44:19he is in.
44:21He is in,
44:21he is in,
44:22he is in.
44:22All right,
44:23he is in,
44:23and he is in,
44:24he is in,
44:25he is in.
44:26He is in.
44:27See you,
44:27he is in,
