Lors des Jeux olympiques d'été à Atlanta en 1996, Richard Jewell, un agent de sécurité sans histoire, découvre une bombe au Centennial Olympic Park, où ont lieu des activités culturelles en soirée. La bombe explose. Deux personnes meurent, des dizaines d'autres sont blessées. Jewell, dont la vigilance a permis de sauver de nombreuses vies, est célébré dans les médias. Mais, l'enquêteur Tom Shaw du FBI est convaincu que Jewell a fabriqué et déposé la bombe. La journaliste Kathy Scruggs de l'"Atlanta Journal-Constitution" commence à remettre en cause la version officielle. Dès lors, la vie de Richard Jewell, soutenu par sa mère et par son avocat Watson Bryant, tourne au cauchemar...
