Speaking at the American Legion National Convention on Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) spoke about the erection of new statues of Founding Fathers across Florida.

00:00It pays dividends, you also get a paycheck tax-free, which I know a lot of people like to do.
00:07Florida, we're proud of what we do for veterans, and I'll talk a little bit about that.
00:12But we are leading amongst all 50 states in building up to next year's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary.
00:21And if you look over recent years, you've seen a lot of cities and states tear down commemorations and statues of our founding fathers.
00:31And I just want to let you know, in Florida, we're not tearing them down.
00:34We're putting up new statues and new remembrances of the foundations of this country.
00:40So we have George Washington.
00:46We've acquired a George Washington that's now in the Florida capital.
00:50We have a number of counties that are named after founding fathers.
00:54And so we've already delivered a statue of Thomas Jefferson to Jefferson County.
00:59We're going to do the same for Franklin County and Hamilton County and Madison County and Monroe County.
01:06And, you know, we'll even airdrop statue to the founding fathers to other places that may not have those namesakes.
01:12But we want to make sure that folks understand the significance and the importance of this.
01:18And part of what flows from that is the fact that we've put a strong emphasis on teaching our young kids about American civics.
01:27And I know the American Legion has been involved in giving scholarships for folks who participate in the oratory program.
01:35We in Florida now have the most robust speech and debate initiative for civics of any state in the United States.
01:44And that wasn't true when I became governor.
01:46We believe it's important that these folks, these kids, when they leave our school system, that they're not just blank slates.
01:54That they actually have a foundation in understanding what it means to be an American.
01:59Because no matter what vocation they pursue, no matter what field of additional study, if any, they pursue,
02:05and people will go and hopefully be productive in a wide variety of areas.
02:10The one common for everyone that we produce from our school system is that they, once they become adults,
02:16will be called upon to exercise the duties and responsibilities of being an American citizen.
02:21And that's meaningful, that's something that people should take seriously,
02:25and they should definitely have that solid philosophical foundation to know why it is that so many people have been willing to fight
02:34and even die for this country.
02:37I'm honored to receive this award.
02:39James Day, he was a good guy.
02:42A great American, not only service in World War II, but for all he did with the American Legion.
02:48And as a.
