00:00she had a great group of friends like super close and go to church together Bible schools together
00:18but no matter what religion you are somebody can turn on you so easily you have the angel
00:25on one shoulder the devil on the other shoulder saying you don't have to be the good girl because
00:31the good girl never wins they were almost devil like she was their leader the queen scorpion
00:42girl-on-girl crime can be very very cruel but the violence in this case was absolutely stunning to me
00:49i think absolutely the devil has a hand in this crime
01:13it was memorial day weekend every year we would always have a party
01:18and that that was like a gathering place for people to spend time with their family and catch up
01:26i never would have dreamed that that weekend would have ended the way that it did
01:36when i first got the call from dispatch it was around 10 o'clock that sunday night
01:40a home had been broken into the house is ransacked and we've got two missing females
01:52when i got to the scene it was around midnight it was it was pitch dark
01:59we had the entire area roped off the home the backyard
02:03the woods we didn't want anybody coming in or out
02:15and then we found a body
02:19there was multiple stab wounds
02:22i've worked a lot of homicides over my 30-year career but i've never seen one quite like this
02:28we have to be up close and personal and right in their face there was a sense of evil
02:41maybe the devil just came in and took over and did this
02:56it's a really small town of about 500 people it's a rural area it's a picturesque hometown
03:07you don't lock your doors and you just feel safe
03:14max meadows is part of what we call the bible belt here in rural southwest virginia we have a lot of
03:20churches that have a lot of people in them on sunday mornings there's very few
03:25that i would say don't go to church because i mean it was a big deal and max meadows if you didn't
03:33go to church on the regular they're going to be like loser you were loser number one
03:37when the lord says jesus calling i'm away for him today
03:48piling into the pews at the pentecostal church are max meadows most faithful teens middle school besties
03:57kindra heather and nikeisha
04:02i was the cheerleader the outspoken one heather was the mom of the group she
04:10made sure we walked the line and nikeisha she was kind of the follower
04:15nikeisha waddell grew up in a pentecostal church i mean it's hard to explain because like i grew up in
04:23it too i think we're more not necessarily weird but on the stricter side drinking smoking
04:35premarital sex you just don't do it ask kendra about pentecostal
04:43it was always fun to go to heathers and nikeisha's church because it was so different than my church
04:51their church was very loud and rowdy speaking in tongues hellfire and brimstone if you needed to be
05:03prayed for you were brought down front people laying out on the floor in the spirit and holy ghost
05:11so i mean i feel like we became such good friends because we shared the same the same beliefs not
05:23stealing not lying not you know treating people bad some people believe you know you can do whatever
05:32you want to on saturday night as long as you go to church on sunday you're good and that's not me
05:39my goal was to please god i never thought i was better than anybody but
05:50it's a well-known secret that many of the local teenage girls are not exactly practicing what they
05:56preach but in this pious town image is everything and the title for most perfect parishioner goes to
06:0613 year old nikeisha waddell nikeisha was very obviously standing out from other teenage
06:16members of her church nikeisha was still pure and godlike nikeisha and her mom vaughn thomas they
06:26definitely were like a staple in the church
06:29nikeisha was always helping with dinners uh extra events bible schools and of course nikeisha would be
06:38there to help as well i feel like vaughn was wanting her to live up to a certain expectation
06:47i think the motive behind it was acceptance that was the motive behind all of it
06:54while vaughn and nikeisha sit atop the church's holy hierarchy their descent wasn't easy nikeisha was
07:03born in 1990 her family was different from the rest of us her dad was never in the picture that i knew of
07:13and that isn't really something that you would expect in the pentecostal church unfortunately members
07:20of the pentecostal faith can be casting judgment upon you which can sometimes be quite harsh but nikeisha
07:28and her mother were a family unit unto themselves nikeisha was a mama's girl she she was always with her
07:37mom when nikeisha was three vaughn met bobby thomas and they got married and moved to max meadows
07:47nikeisha did not attend church with vaughn and nikeisha he went to another church but bobby helped
07:55raise nikeisha with vaughn they were a perfect close-knit family while mother and daughter take
08:04pride in their well-earned gold status at their church others at the church are green with envy
08:11in nikeisha's church there is a focus on family and faith but you also have
08:16an enormous amount of focus on material possessions the more that you have the more
08:21well-loved and well-respected member of the community you became
08:27i wouldn't say that nikeisha was spoiled but she definitely didn't want for a whole lot she had
08:34pretty much whatever whatever she wanted clothes cosmetics if she wanted a new computer she was going
08:42to get the computer we all didn't have as much as nikeisha did
08:50people that live in maxvedo's can be insanely jealous
08:55and i know that i couldn't afford and my parents couldn't afford to buy everything they did for her
09:01but as this godly girl enters her teen years nikeisha faces a hard truth money doesn't buy happiness
09:19at that time nikeisha was about six foot tall so she was quite a bit taller than
09:25everybody boys and girls she was bigger than i think it really held her back from a lot her size did
09:37in the summer nikeisha and you know kendra and i we would always have a sleepover
09:47we would do makeup and talk about boys and watch movies
09:53if we were doing cheers she kind of just sat back and watched
09:59she was very shy and you know i feel like maybe she felt a little left out in eighth grade that's when
10:09boys kind of start noticing you heather and i were getting attention from boys and being called pretty
10:19and nikeisha wasn't getting the same attention
10:32starting our freshman year at fort chiswil high school it's a whole new world
10:38heather and i were a grade younger than nikeisha so when she went to high school
10:44we were in middle school so it was scary for both of us really because we were being separated
10:54this is the bible belt but you always have some kids that aren't raised in church
11:02so nikeisha i've tried to avoid people who don't believe
11:07nikeisha started out in the religious group being the nice wholesome girl because
11:14people accepted her in the church but somebody can turn on you so easily
11:22girls can be very very cruel to each other
11:28nikeisha just wanted to be included
11:32but she didn't realize how dangerous that it actually was
11:44for chisel high school was very small it was maybe a hundred people in the freshman class
11:51and cliques were already kind of formed before you ever even got there
11:57nikeisha just assumed that she'd be hanging out with the religious group because church played a big part
12:04in their lives but nikeisha wasn't very popular in her gym class she was always one of the last people picked or not picked at all
12:18there were girls who were members of nikeisha's church who needed to feel better about themselves
12:23by tearing down a girl like nikeisha with a lot of what i call girl-on-girl crime
12:30they could be judgmental and you do one wrong move or say one wrong thing
12:36they don't forget it i remember there was an instance when nikeisha was being bullied by another classmate
12:44the church group were silent they just let whatever happened happen without raising their voice or anything
12:55so she was pretty much on her own and then suddenly somebody came to nikeisha's defense
13:03nikeisha's protector is an unlikely ally fellow freshman annie belcher
13:17annie was bigger than all of the other girls she got made fun of for her weight as well however she
13:26stuck up for herself when she saw nikesha being bullied by other people annie would refer to it as
13:32the big girl code big girl code is if you mess with one of us you mess with all of us the big girls we
13:43stick together and they began to bond with each other they connected on the fact of they weren't
13:52the most popular in the class they weren't going to be homecoming queen and when i found out that
13:58you know nikeisha and annie had struck up such a good friendship i was shocked that's because annie has
14:06a reputation growing up i was on the cheerleading team with annie annie didn't have the foundation
14:16that we had going to church she was the type that i was like i'm just not i'm not even going there
14:24i met annie in eighth grade she wasn't part of my friend group
14:34annie's family was low class
14:38they lived in a trailer there were times when her mom was in prison it's sad
14:49i think annie's upbringing started to shape her as a person annie was very delinquent in school
14:58one year she didn't even have her picture taken for the yearbook because she was suspended
15:07she wore black a lot she was just different
15:10so no one really messed with her i don't know i don't want to say that her mom come after me and
15:26in high school annie's group they were the outcast they were against the church they would draw
15:34pentagrams everywhere the number six three times and annie was their leader
15:45the queen scorpion she had some type of power over those individuals
15:53and they were almost devil like annie found her own way to be popular in a sense of it's popular to
16:02stay away from her her scare tactic was you know to be the bully and it works
16:17while annie instills fear in others she has a soft spot for nikesha
16:23nikesha found somebody who was going to protect her and she's suddenly feeling that she belongs
16:30somewhere she was starting to wear black clothing and dark eyeliner completely different than how she used to be
16:48would still hang out after school on the weekends
16:51i could see that nikesha to a certain degree was slowly changing i remember one day all of a sudden
17:01nikesha takes something from her pocket
17:06she said i stole this makeup from walmart and i'm just like i know she did not just do that
17:13that was my first realization that nikesha maybe wasn't the person that i thought she was
17:22nikesha went from being a straight-a student to making d's and f's skipping school and and drinking
17:30alcohol which that's a that's a big sin in the church so that was a big wow
17:38nikesha lived the devil life you know she would be friends with annie at school and you know get to be
17:50the bully and then she would go home to her mom and live the church life again she was a good church
18:00girl on sunday and i'm like why is she there you know why was she there at all
18:10in a small town like max meadows secrets don't keep long so it's only a matter of time before
18:17nikesha's double life is exposed everybody talks everybody knows their business
18:24nikesha's mom von would get calls from the school saying that nikesha did not show up
18:33the people that knew von thomas told her that they had suspected that nikesha was using some alcohol
18:40and possibly even some illegal drugs von made nikesha get out a notebook and write the lord's prayer
18:49over and over again thinking that it would help her
18:55she used the religion as a form of discipline to try to heal her from the evil that she was now part of
19:08von believes the devil has a vice grip on her daughter's heart and she knows exactly who's to blame
19:15she saw this change in her kid from the time that she met annie and she knew that it was only
19:27progressively gonna get worse if something didn't change and von's only hope was for god to remove
19:37annie from nikesha's life and if not god then someone else von told nikesha to get rid of annie
19:47annie is not good for you there was no stopping von she wanted that friendship to end
19:54in 2004 there's a pressure cooker atmosphere happening in nikesha's house nikesha was still
20:07engaging in risky behavior which was causing more fights and arguments with her mother because
20:12according to von nikesha was sinning her relationship with danny was definitely pushing her further and
20:21further from church from her mom from me i think the devil was motivating her life
20:34i know that von could feel the grip she was losing on nikesha because she actually told my mom
20:44she said i went in nikesha's room and anointed her room and prayed over it she said because you just
20:52never know the more that nikesha acted out the more intense nivon became in our faith anytime something
21:05happens you go to god that's where you find help but she was starting down a path that was not going to
21:14end well but the power of prayer isn't enough to stop nikesha from straying into even more dangerous territory
21:33in 2004 that's really when like chat rooms started becoming a thing and we all did it
21:41it nikesha's on screen name was assassin sweet she used that as almost like a fantasy life she was talking to
21:55older men not anybody we knew one of these older men seems to stand out as nikesha's soul mate
22:04nikesha never had a boyfriend that i ever remember but she wasn't really you know the type that all the boys
22:14were after nikesha was talking to a 20 year old sailor named victor from port smith and our
22:26upbringing you're taught you know you save yourself for marriage it's hammered in your head from day one
22:32her relationship with this guy it was online but there was talk of you know physical things that in
22:42itself was not pleasing to god and she knew i wouldn't approve those were just the rules but nikesha was
22:52thinking that she did not have to follow rules and it's not fair for nikesha this was probably a sense of
23:00look at this forbidden fruit and now let me go try to taste it the attention she was getting from victor
23:11you know she loved it
23:14i was hurt because nikesha was willingly sinning over and over again and i didn't really want anything to
23:23do with it because maybe now she's not worthy of god's love so i just stared clear
23:32annie was not a voice of reason at all annie encouraged nikesha to continue to talk to victor
23:40the pentecostal church population wanted her to be good and pure a lot of people were praying that god
23:48remove anything from her life that's not good for her basically protection she was going down a bad
23:56path and it was something that none of us could stop
23:59it was sunday night memorial day weekend it was probably 8 30. my stepdad gets a call
24:22from bobby nikesha's stepdad and he says have you seen vaughn or nikesha
24:32he said well i just got home and he said nikesha and vaughn aren't here he said and the house is trashed
24:41you can literally throw a rock to my house from hers and i'm thinking
24:44is there somebody you know in the neighborhood breaking into houses
24:50i was terrified because i mean where are they that sunday it was a holiday weekend i get a call
24:57that we had a missing daughter and a missing mother nikesha waddell and vaughn thomas
25:05and i know bobby thomas because it's a small community i said i'll be there as quick as i can
25:11and when i got to the thomas home walked inside and the house was totally ransacked bobby said that
25:21vaughn's jewelry was missing and he could not find nikesha or vaughn anywhere from the beginning i said
25:29something's not right most burglars are not going to go in and just ransack the entire place they're
25:36going to take what they're after and they're going to get out of there i told mr thomas this look staged
25:45when i first arrived on scene of course we met with lieutenant tuck and bobby thomas
25:52bobby thomas said that he had gone out to texas visit one of his sons in the middle of the week prior
25:57to this he said the last time he had spoke with vaughn was actually thirsty night
26:03he tried to call her again on friday night and could not get a hold of her
26:11it's been three days since anyone has spoken to vaughn or nikesha
26:15with every passing hour concerns grow and the chances of finding them safe dwindle
26:22and that's when additional staff began to respond to process the crime scene
26:27inside the kitchen area we spotted a small amount of blood
26:41this was very shocking at this point it was really clear that the crime we're investigating is much more
26:48severe than a break-in that looks staged a lot of things were going through my mind we had to
26:53figure out what happened and i was open to every option from abduction to murder
27:00and we've got two missing people nikesha waddell and her mother vaughn thomas looking at how the house
27:17had been ransacked we're thinking maybe there was some sort of violence within the home so we've got to
27:24look into mr thomas we asked if there had been any arguments between them two he told us they
27:32had been a good home they had a really good foundation while the thomas's marriage is solid
27:39bobby explains the relationship between vaughn and her daughter nikesha has been on thin ice for months
27:46in spring of 2004 fun learned about nikesha's relationships with a lot of adult men online
27:53and she was really appalled and horrified because nikesha was talking about sex this was not the
28:00behavior that she expected of her 14 year old daughter who she had raised in the church as a
28:05result nikesha and vaughn are fighting almost all of the time vaughn felt that the whole situation was
28:13pure evil nikesha was on the computer a lot with these with these men at an early age and that's very
28:22dangerous we see cases all the time where these young 13 and 14 year old girls build these
28:28relationships online with men and they end up getting abducted die end up getting raped end up
28:34getting killed yes i gotta look at the big picture bobby turned over nikesha's computer to our investigative
28:41team on nikesha's computer investigators discover her virtual life assassin suite
28:47we had developed additional information that nikesha had started an online relationship with a guy
28:55named victor he was 20 she's 14 years old the math just does not math like it should nikesha was
29:07lying to victor about her age and appearance she was telling him she was older she was acting older
29:15and victor believed it nikesha knew that wine was a sin she knew it was wrong on top of that she told
29:26him where she was living victor may have actually showed up and done something with nikesha and her
29:34mother i had his last name and i did eventually make contact with victor victor tells investigators he
29:42was just enjoying a little online banter but nikesha convinced herself they were planning a future
29:48together she was living a fantasy life online with this guy but i didn't know that she thought it was
30:00real in her mind he was the one and she was you know gonna quit school and and move up there to
30:10portsmouth and they were gonna live happily ever after according to what was told to me by victor
30:20on friday a friend drove nikesha six hours down there to portsmouth and she finally met victor
30:29and it did not go her way he said that they got in a big argument
30:34and she hollered at victor he said he made her leave when he found out her age
30:41the whole house of cards for nikesha ultimately fell
30:45because victor is not expecting a 14 year old girl
30:54in this one horse town police lights don't go unnoticed
30:58and while detectives continue speaking with victor a neighbor calls the thomas home
31:05turns out to be a neighbor that nikesha goes to high school with by the name of stephanie
31:13i said i'm looking for nikesha
31:18she said i did see nikesha friday afternoon after school she gave me the directions to a mobile home
31:24where annie lived approximately three or four miles down the road i didn't know what i was getting
31:29myself into i knocked on the door of the mobile home to identify myself the man came to the door
31:38he told me he was annie's father i said i'm looking for nikesha i'm looking for her mother do you have
31:44any idea where they could be he invited me in and led me to the back bedroom and annie was there
32:00i didn't see fawn anywhere i saw nikesha on the bed the lights were very very dim and i could barely
32:09see her face i didn't know if she was still breathing but we know that evil exists we see it in the cases
32:19that we work i think absolutely the devil had a hand in this cry
32:23i was at annie belcher's mobile home and i walked back to the bedroom and i found nikesha on the bed
32:41and she got up i identified myself to her and vaughn wasn't there i said i found you but i'm looking
32:51for your mother where's she at and she looked at me and said she's dead i killed her
33:04and that floored me and i said can you say that again please then she said it again i said she's
33:11serious annie and nikesha were taken back to the sheriff's office where we can get a statement from
33:28both of them when i interviewed annie she said nikesha called her on the phone that friday morning and
33:35told her she had gotten into an argument with her mother she said that nikesha had gone to her house
33:43because she needed a friend naturally you're going to go to your best friend and you're going to talk
33:47about these situations when nikesha said that her mom was dead annie was really taken back was really
33:55shocked she says she had no prior knowledge of the murder whatsoever
34:00in a separate room at the wythe county sheriff's office a stoic nikesha pens her confession
34:08vaughn figured out you know that nikesha was talking to older men online
34:16nikesha told me they'd argued all week
34:21and they started arguing again vaughn left to go to work nikesha decided i'm gonna skip school
34:28vaughn came home around 12 o'clock an argument ensued
34:37according to nikesha something in her snap and she took the knife which was on the kitchen
34:45counter and stabbed vaughn in the shoulder vaughn then retreated out the back door
34:57i said what did you do then she said i stabbed her several times to make sure she was dead
35:06she looked at me straightened eyes and told me that she didn't show any emotion
35:12i've been investigative for 38 years i see evil i do but i'd have never had a 14 year
35:19girl killed her mother but sometimes the devil is in the details
35:27and detectives notice an inconsistency in nikesha's statement
35:32nikesha's statement was all about her and then there was this transition of pronouns
35:38she transitions from saying i to saying we i knew someone had to help nikesha and the only one left was
35:47annie
35:50so the second interview with annie i said i just want to get to the truth
35:55eventually she admitted that she was at vaughn thomas's home the day she was killed
36:01annie watched nikesha make the final blows to take her breath away she just stood back and watched
36:12she said she's trying to help a friend out i said you're under arrest
36:20nikesha tried to make it sound like that this was just a spur of the moment impulse crime
36:25but when we executed a search warrant we located a large hunting knife that had apparent blood
36:35we found notes and we found a diagram sketch of von thomas's residence and the door that she normally
36:42comes in from work was marked they actually put a lot of thought into how they were going to carry out
36:49this crime nikesha she wanted to live free of her mother and she wanted to make her life with this
36:57guy named vic vaughn was on the ground still warm and the first thing that nikesha thinks is to get in
37:05a car and to go see her boyfriend across the state and annie was there to assist we were able to follow
37:14up with victor we learned that he had nothing to do with this crime nikesha now has a long ride home
37:22from portsmouth to consider the fact that her fantasy relationship has now broken up and she has a dead
37:29parent waiting for her at home annie and nikesha tell police about their attempt to wash away this mortal sin
37:37with their own holy trinity a shovel a mop and bleach before staging the scene to look like a break-in
37:48we're processing the crime scene when lieutenant tuck calls one of our cell phones
37:53and tells us to walk to the back right hand corner of the yard
38:00we could see that they had buried vaughn in a shallow grave nikesha was telling the truth
38:07it was 43 stab wounds in a long time 43 43 times there was at least 42 times that you could have stopped
38:22and nikesha decided that her mom was the enemy she was once considered to be a perfect person but she
38:31could no longer live up to that standard she wants to get away from the church and vaughn's upbringings
38:41and do what she wants to do and it got to the point that nikesha couldn't take anymore
38:48nikesha was full of rage but i do not feel that nikesha would have ever done something like this had
38:55she not met annie you could just tell that annie had more of a deviant mentality than what nikesha had
39:04i think annie made her think that all this could go away if she would just listen to her
39:10annie had a major influence on nikesha and annie was jealous of nikesha's home life
39:17nikesha had you know whatever she wanted and everything she needed and
39:22and i think annie was jealous of that and maybe thought well if i can't have it i don't want her
39:31to either because of the severity of the crime both of these juveniles would be tried as adults
39:40but in the end plea deals were reached where nikesha was charged with first degree murder
39:46she was sentenced to 70 years with 35 years suspended annie was charged with second degree
39:53murder and she was sentenced to 15 years and neither one of them showed any remorse
40:04i thought we were close i thought you know if something between her and her mom was so bad
40:13why would i have not known about it i loved fawn her mom was so sweet and so good to her
40:22she committed the ultimate sin
40:26thou shalt not kill honor thy father and mother both those commandments were broken
40:32to this day i still think the devil got into her soul and in the minutes that it took to kill bond
40:40something inside her possessed her
40:45if i was to speak to nikesha i would tell her i forgive her
40:48and that god forgives her as long as she asked him to and that i hope and pray
40:59i hope and pray that she lives a life that her mom would be proud of
41:14that he is a пользов so that her son was born after their mother and the mother and the mother and her father
41:24that i think that she had a life that had a lot of really bad
41:27and that was so good that i'm not sure if the child could get her back
