00:00Everyone would be very tired, and they wouldn't be able to play, and they wouldn't have much fun.
00:06And I say, oh, shh.
00:10Mom, I'm going to break the TV one night night.
00:13It's sleep time when it's dark time.
00:17Oh no, she wakes my mom up so many times.
00:21Almost for, almost for like hours.
00:25There are a lot of reasons why kids need sleep.
00:27And, you know, once kids learn the word why, it often becomes their favorite word.
00:33And as they continue to grow and develop, and their cognitive functioning improves, and their curiosity improves,
00:39they want to know, why does my sock have a hole in it?
00:43And why can't I play with my trucks on the glass coffee table?
00:46And why do I have to sleep?
00:48And so helping kids understand why actually helps them comply with what you're asking them to do.
00:54So once they're old enough to be able to understand that, it's actually very legitimate for them to have an explanation.
00:59So one thing that we really like to do for kids this age is to make a little book that tells about why sleep is important for them.
01:07So you can say something like, you know, Johnny's been having a hard time resting his body at night.
01:13When his body's not rested, he doesn't have as much energy to play during the day.
01:18So mommy and daddy love you so much that we want to make sure your body gets enough rest.
01:24So here's how we're going to help you.
01:26And you kind of walk them through, you know, what the steps are.
01:28So that really helps kids understand, you know, why you're doing what you're doing.
01:32And it's really fun when you do that to make your little book or your explanations very, very specific.
01:38So rather than saying, you know, sleep is good for your body and sleep is good for Johnny's body and whatnot,
01:41you can really say, you know, Johnny needs to play with, you know, Susie at school tomorrow
01:46and he will feel cranky on the jungle gym at school.
01:48You know, something very specific for the child so that they can really, really identify with why sleep is good for them.
01:56And another reason why sleep is really important for kids is that it really does help their bodies grow.
02:01So you can even get a height chart for kids and show them how their body is growing little by little by little.
02:07Or you can even just get a pencil and go into the frame of a doorway and mark off, you know, how tall they are a couple of times a month
02:14and they can see that their body is growing and you can help reinforce that your body's growing because you're getting such good rest at night.
02:21And when they're in a good mood during the day, you want to say to them, you know,
02:23if they've had some tough nights and they didn't get enough sleep and then they do get a good night's sleep,
02:28you want to say to your child, you know, look at how good you feel today.
02:31Look at how much energy you have right now.
02:34Isn't this a great day because you've got a good night's sleep.
02:36Catch them being good.
02:37Catch them when they do well.
02:39Yeah, when they wake up in the morning and suddenly they're refreshed
02:42and they actually have a smile on their face to greet the day,
02:45you can say, your body is so rested and you're in such a good mood.
02:49I bet you're going to think really smart thoughts today.
02:53Music is one of the best teaching tools for kids.
02:56And so to have a song where the pagenimals are singing about why sleep is important
03:00will help kids internalize those messages and they won't even realize necessarily
03:04that they're learning something, but they like the song and therefore they'll sleep even better.
03:09Absolutely.
03:10It's a very good way to convince the kids of what's important.
03:13And they like to see it in the pagenimals doing the things that they do
03:17and the things they believe strongly in.
03:19The kids are more likely to go along with it.
