00:00I think it's possible to brainwash, manipulate, coerce people to do just about anything.
00:10And we see this demonstrated in military training or in the kind of conditioning that people go through when they get involved in cults.
00:18And they do things that are certainly way outside of the normal parameters of what they would consider moral.
00:25Nowhere was this more evident than in the small South American country of Guyana in the winter of 1978.
00:32The place was called Jonestown.
00:35On the surface, it appeared to be a gathering of ethnically diverse families assembled by the Reverend Jim Jones to live their dream of a racially harmonious society.
00:46This reporter spoke to many Jonestown people. They all insisted that it was a peaceful and productive place in which to live.
00:53Are you happy here?
00:55Oh, I should say I am. I've never been any happier in my life.
00:58Despite the outward appearance of normality, reports of sexual abuse, torture and members being held against their will filtered back to the United States.
01:08San Francisco Congressman Leo Ryan flew to Guyana to investigate the allegations.
01:13I'm very glad to be here. This is a congressional inquiry. I think that all of you know that I'm here to find out more about questions that have been raised about your operation here.
01:22I can tell you right now that from a few conversations I've had with some of the folks here already this evening, that whatever the comments are, there are some people here who believe that this is the best thing that ever happened to them in their whole life.
01:32The events of the following day would shock the world.
01:53Love is the only weapon. Shit! Bullshit! Martin Luther King died with love! Kennedy died talking about something you couldn't even understand! Some kind of generalized love and he never even backed it up! He shut down!
02:22Bullshit! Love is the only weapon with which I got to fight! I got a hell of a lot of weapons to fight! I got my claws, I got compasses, I got guns, I got dynamite! I got a hell of a lot to fight! I'll fight! I'll fight! I will fight! I will fight! I will fight! I will fight! I will fight!
02:52Some 20 years later, Jonestown still raises as many questions as it does answers.
03:07Was it a mass suicide or a mass murder?
03:10Was it a mind control experiment gone awry?
03:13Was the CIA somehow involved?
03:16While still a teenager, Jones established a pulpit on the street corners of Richmond, Indiana.
03:22Where he sold monkeys door-to-door in order to fund his activities.
03:26There he came to know a juvenile police officer named Dan Matron,
03:30whose improbable path Jones would cross and recross in the years ahead.
03:36By the late 1950s, Jones had married his high school sweetheart, Marceline,
03:42and established an interracial church based in Indianapolis.
03:46He called it the People's Temple.
03:48At first, the church prospered, but Jones had a secret life.
03:55Matron left Richmond and joined a sometime CIA cover at the State Department.
04:00Coincidentally or not, Jones suddenly became of deep interest to the most clandestine department of the agency,
04:06whose activities included mind control experiments, attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro,
04:11and operations to infiltrate and disrupt black organizations.
04:16For reasons that the CIA has always refused to explain,
04:20they opened a secret file in Jones' name.
04:24Suddenly, Jones abandoned his church.
04:26And armed with two passports,
04:28the young charismatic preacher traveled to a series of political hotspots,
04:32Mexico, Cuba, Guyana, and Brazil.
04:35Though he spoke no Portuguese,
04:38in 1962, Jones moved to Belo Horizonte,
04:41a small town in Brazil.
04:43With no apparent means of support,
04:45he rented an expensive house
04:47and began to make in-depth studies into voodoo,
04:50faith healing, mass conversion, and ESP,
04:52a key investigative element of the CIA's mind control program.
04:57But Jones was not the only person there from Richmond, Indiana.
05:01He later bragged of visits to his neighbor,
05:03Dan Matrone.
05:05The former police chief was now working for a sometime CIA cover
05:09at the U.S. consulate,
05:10training Brazilian police in the subtleties of hostile interrogation.
05:16Jones was also contacted by another key member of American intelligence at that time,
05:21John Lodison,
05:22who'd been kicked out of the Soviet Union for spying.
05:25In Brazil, he met with Jones
05:27for reasons that the CIA still refuses to explain.
05:31But Jones' stay in Brazil did not last.
05:35He left the country soon after a newspaper article appeared,
05:37claiming he was a CIA agent.
05:41Returning to the U.S.A.,
05:42Jones moved the People's Temple to Northern California,
05:45where its membership grew rapidly.
05:47Jones flourished in San Francisco's cult-worshipping atmosphere.
06:04Membership in his People's Temple swelled to nearly 20,000 as his reputation grew,
06:09and he started food kitchens and daycare centers.
06:12He particularly targeted minorities.
06:14Believing that the ends justified the means,
06:18he put on fake displays of healing
06:19and said that he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.
06:23Watch your side, God, everybody else.
06:25You asked and begged and pleaded for help with your suffering,
06:29and he never gave you any food,
06:30he never provided a bed,
06:31he never gave you a home.
06:33But I, the socialist worker,
06:34have given you all those things.
06:37Stop shooting.
06:38And you won't die if you jump on it.
06:42You won't die if you stand on it.
06:46You won't die if you jump on the downer.
06:50Because I am freedom.
06:52I am peace.
06:53I am justice.
06:54I am equality.
06:55I am God.
07:00Using classic brainwashing techniques,
07:02he bound his followers to him
07:04so that they willingly gave him
07:05whatever property and money they had.
07:07I really don't feel comfortable
07:20with our worship being photographed.
07:22I really don't.
07:23I must go against the entire council.
07:26I don't feel good about it.
07:30I can, they can photograph me all they choose
07:33because I do not care.
07:35I'm fearless.
07:35I come unafraid of anything,
07:38but I don't want the cameras focusing on others.
07:40I don't want them.
07:41Focus on me all you want.
07:43I owe something to my people.
07:45That's to be a good pastor,
07:46and that I am.
07:47The best I am.
07:50His services were dazzling affairs
07:52with soul and gospel singers,
07:54dance groups,
07:55and celebrity preachers
07:57like black revolutionary Angela Davis.
08:01The size of his congregation
08:02gave him a political power base.
08:04During the 1976 presidential election campaign,
08:07he allegedly provided support for the Democrats
08:10and met the presidential candidate's wife.
08:18Local politicians sought his support,
08:20and he became a member of the city's housing commission.
08:24People from all blocks of life
08:26were just fascinated by Jim Jones.
08:28I mean, I remember going to a testimonial dinner.
08:31Who is there at the dinner?
08:31You got Angela Davis, the communist,
08:34and you have Walter Heddy,
08:36the chairman of the John Birch Society.
08:38And you had the lieutenant governor of state California.
08:41You had the mayor.
08:42You had the DA.
08:42You had the chief of police.
08:43You had the supervisors.
08:45You had businessmen.
08:46They were all there at this meeting,
08:47and I thought,
08:48Jim, you got your act together.
08:49He'd bring all of these people in,
08:51and he himself would come in
08:53in the midst of a smaller retinue of AIDS.
08:57They'd shoo him to the front of the room,
08:59put him on the center of the chair,
09:01and basically sort of guard him the whole time.
09:04Guys in dark glasses, black suits,
09:05the whole thing.
09:06It was very unusual.
09:08Jonestown was in its fourth year
09:09when Jones arrived in 1977.
09:12Conditions had never been easy,
09:14but when he took over the agricultural mission,
09:16became a labor camp.
09:19Well, Jim had armed guards.
09:22I mean, young men and women
09:25who were told that they needed to watch everybody,
09:28and it kept you working hard.
09:31We headed out to the fields,
09:33and you vied to go really far out, actually,
09:35because you couldn't hear Jim over the loudspeakers.
09:40Jonestown was wired with loudspeakers,
09:43and Jim spoke 24 hours a day on it.
09:46When he wasn't speaking,
09:48the tapes that they'd made of him speaking
09:50played on and on.
09:53And Jim would make these announcements,
09:56and he'd say,
09:57I'm sending out some children
10:00and some of my aides,
10:03and other people, you won't know who they are,
10:05to pretend they want to leave.
10:07And it's a test.
10:08It's a loyalty test.
10:09And if anyone comes to you,
10:12you're to report them.
10:13You didn't know who it would be,
10:14so you just never put the place down,
10:17and how much you enjoyed it there,
10:19how much you loved the place,
10:21and how great he was,
10:22and how father was so nice,
10:25and you had to call him father.
10:27You just never said anything bad about the place,
10:29because if you did,
10:31you would be coming up there that night.
10:33They also told of full-scale rehearsals
10:35for mass suicide in the jungle.
10:37I'll talk to a psychiatrist, whatever,
10:40but I believe I was brainwashed.
10:43But we do understand that it's extremely difficult
10:46for anyone to comprehend
10:49people being in a cult group,
10:52standing by,
10:53watching their daughter being beat 75 times,
10:56as I did,
10:57watching children being beat,
10:59microphones held to their mouth
11:00while they're screaming,
11:02so that everyone throughout the building
11:04that are not in a public meeting
11:06can hear them scream also,
11:08going through electric shock treatment
11:12where they're screaming.
11:16It's incredibly difficult for anyone
11:18to believe a story like this.
11:20There are SWAT teams,
11:22consisting of 50 young men and women
11:24dressed in khaki.
11:26There's two teams of 25 each
11:27that are armed with 200 to 300 guns,
11:32and that they patrol all day and all night
11:35the whole encampment,
11:36and that Jim Jones has stated publicly
11:38that nobody better try to escape from here
11:40because you will be shot.
11:41The methods that Jim Jones used
11:43in his cult,
11:44The People's Temple,
11:45are definitely classical mind control techniques.
11:49And according to a book by Michael Myers,
11:51which is called
11:52Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment,
11:55his documentation leads him to conclude
11:57that actually Jonestown was run by the CIA.
12:00Prior to being Jonestown
12:02in the deep jungles of British Guiana,
12:05that site was actually under control
12:07of what was called the Shalom Project.
12:08This was a CIA program
12:10for training black mercenaries
12:12for warfare in Angola.
12:13I'd gone through a false mass suicide.
12:17I went through one talk,
12:18and I went through one
12:18where we actually took a drink,
12:20and we were told we had an hour to live
12:22so that Jones could find out
12:23how people would react psychologically.
12:25Turning Jonestown's children
12:27against his own enemies
12:28was standard practice for Jim Jones,
12:30and it delighted him.
12:32I'd like to cure Greystone and Tim Stone.
12:35I'll go back and do it right now.
12:37I think that I should take a knife
12:38and cut Mr. Tupper all up real good
12:40and put poison in him
12:43and invite all my relatives over there
12:45and have them eat him,
12:46and then I'll die.
12:49It was terror.
12:53It was living terror
12:55living inside Jonestown.
12:57Deborah Layton had escaped Jonestown
12:59a few months earlier
13:00with bizarre tales of mind control,
13:03armed guards,
13:04and suicide rehearsals.
13:05They are recounted in her new book,
13:08Seductive Poison.
13:09The suicide drills were the most frightening
13:11and disturbing things there,
13:13that we would be awakened
13:15from the middle of a dreamless sleep
13:17to Jim's voice screaming over the loudspeaker
13:20that we were going to die,
13:21that we had to come to the pavilion,
13:23that mercenaries were coming in to kill us.
13:26She put her concerns in a sworn affidavit
13:28to the U.S. State Department
13:30months before Congressman Ryan's trip.
13:32Congressman Ryan and the journalists
13:35arrived in Guyana on Tuesday,
13:37November 14, 1978.
13:40He was such a kind man,
13:43so compassionate,
13:45didn't get excited about nothing.
13:48I was going to be okay.
13:50It'll be fine.
13:51Just take it easy.
13:52It'll be fine.
13:53That's just the way he was.
13:55Mm-hmm.
13:55For some time,
13:57Ryan had been a thorn
13:58in the side of the CIA.
13:59He had recently pushed through
14:01congressional legislation
14:02that curtailed the agency's
14:04covert foreign activities.
14:06As Ryan prepared
14:07for a first-hand look at Johnstown,
14:09he was joined by a State Department agent,
14:11Richard Dwyer.
14:12What he didn't know
14:13was that Dwyer was working undercover.
14:15The man named Dwyer
14:20was the head of the CIA here.
14:23I mean, the CIA had a presence here.
14:26It was an unrevealed presence at the time.
14:28I had a premonition about the trip.
14:31There was something that just made me
14:34feel a great deal of uncertainty.
14:38In 1978,
14:40Jackie Speier was the legal aid
14:41to San Francisco area
14:42Congressman Leo Ryan.
14:44They were about to embark
14:45on a fact-finding trip
14:47to look into reports
14:48of abuse and brainwashing
14:50at the remote jungle compound
14:52known as Jonestown.
14:54I always kind of
14:56shake my head in disbelief
14:59when they refer to it as a suicide.
15:00Those people
15:01were not in control
15:04of their minds.
15:08They had been brainwashed.
15:10The next day,
15:1120 Temple members
15:12decided they wanted to leave.
15:14In a haze of drugs,
15:16Jones' world began to fall apart.
15:18Jones reacted angrily
15:19when shown a note
15:20from a cult member
15:21asking the party
15:22for help to get away.
15:24Someone came
15:25and passed me this note.
15:30Well,
15:31that's who we're talking about.
15:32He wants to leave his son here.
15:33If Jonestown's such a bad place,
15:35why does he want to leave his son here?
15:36He's the one that I'm just talking about.
15:40Yeah,
15:41this is the man
15:43that wants to leave his son here.
15:44People play games,
15:45people play games, friend.
15:47They lie,
15:48they lie.
15:49What can I do about lying?
15:50I say,
15:50you people are going,
15:51leave us.
15:52I just beg you,
15:53please leave us.
15:54Bill,
15:55we will bother nobody.
15:56Anybody wants to get out of here,
15:57can get out of here.
15:59We have no problem
15:59about getting out of here.
16:00They come and go all the time.
16:02I don't know what kind of game.
16:03People like publicity.
16:06Some people do.
16:06I don't.
16:08But he said goodbye,
16:10apparently calmly.
16:12Then he whispered
16:13to one of his lieutenants.
16:18As the party reached the airport,
16:20a man with a knife
16:21tried to stab Ryan.
16:23The congressman
16:23described the attack.
16:25Yeah,
16:25he said something about
16:26rob and choke
16:27and kill
16:28or knife.
16:30I don't know.
16:30But what he said
16:31was he intended to kill him.
16:34The party had now
16:35been joined
16:35by about 30 cult members
16:37who wanted to get away.
16:38And the enlarged party
16:39walked out
16:40towards the aircraft.
16:50Congressman Ryan
16:51went over
16:51to shake the pilot's hand.
16:56As the party waited,
16:57a tractor and trailer
16:58appeared in the background.
17:01hidden men opened fire.
17:07Congressman Ryan,
17:08two reporters
17:09and an NBC cameraman
17:10were killed.
17:11Several other journalists
17:12and defectors
17:13were injured.
17:14One man who was not executed
17:19at the airstrip
17:20was Richard Dwyer,
17:21the undercover CIA man
17:23from the American embassy,
17:25seen here peeling off
17:26from Ryan's party
17:27seconds before the tractor arrives.
17:29Where Dwyer was
17:30in the next few hours
17:31is key to one of the mysteries
17:33that still lies at the heart
17:35of the Jonestown tragedy.
17:37Having dealt with Congressman Ryan,
17:39Jones now turned his insanity
17:41on the temple's faithful.
17:43At this point in time,
17:45Jonestown had become surreal.
17:47Almost everything
17:48that was going on
17:49seemed surreal to me.
17:51I mean, by this time,
17:52I pretty much figured out
17:53this guy was mad.
17:55But he said,
17:57I've never seen
17:59or felt Jonestown
18:00so peaceful or quiet.
18:02and I remember
18:03getting a chill
18:04just coursed through my body
18:06because Jonestown
18:07had never been in more agony.
18:08It had never been
18:09so less together.
18:11From his seat
18:12in the pavilion,
18:13Jones recorded
18:14the last desperate hour
18:15of the people's temple.
18:17In front of him,
18:18more than 900
18:19of his followers
18:20who were surrounded
18:21by guards
18:21holding rifles
18:22and crossbows.
18:24For all but a few,
18:25there was no escape.
18:28Subsequent medical examinations
18:29revealed that many of the dead
18:31had been murdered,
18:32held down,
18:33and injected with cyanide.
18:38Jones himself
18:39was one of the last to die.
18:41A single gunshot
18:42to the head
18:43sometime around midnight.
18:45His killer
18:45has never been known.
18:48At 3.30 in the morning
18:49when everyone was dead
18:50and several hours
18:51before anyone arrived,
18:53a radio message
18:54was sent from Jonestown
18:55using a secret CIA channel
18:57reporting what it described
18:59as a mass suicide.
19:00This was the message
19:01that shaped our view
19:03of Jonestown
19:03for years to come,
19:05even though the best
19:06medical evidence suggests
19:07that most of those
19:08who died
19:09had been murdered.
19:10The question then becomes
19:12who sent that message?
19:14The only functioning radio
19:15in the area
19:15belonged to the local
19:16American intelligence officer,
19:18Richard Dwyer.
19:19Though he always denied
19:20going back to Jonestown
19:22that night,
19:22the last tape
19:23tells a very different story.
19:26Take Dwyer on down
19:28to the East House.
19:30Get Dwyer out of here
19:32before something happens
19:33to him.
19:35Dwyer?
19:36No.
19:37I'm not talking
19:38about you, Tara.
19:39I said Dwyer.
19:42Though more than 900
19:44Americans had died,
19:46Richard Dwyer
19:46and other U.S. Embassy officials
19:48would later receive medals
19:49and promotions.
19:54A multimillion-dollar lawsuit
19:56was subsequently filed
19:57by Congressman Ryan's daughter
19:59and the relatives
20:00of those who died.
20:02The suit described
20:03the deaths as a massacre
20:04and alleged that Jones
20:06was an agent
20:06or operative
20:07of the Central Intelligence Agency.
20:10It was dismissed
20:11on a technicality
20:12and never tried.
20:16Here's more
20:17from Bob Jimenez
20:18in Diana.
20:20Recovery teams
20:21have been removing
20:22the dead from Jonestown
20:23since Wednesday.
20:25Today,
20:25as the recovery operation
20:26neared what appeared
20:27to be the end,
20:28the miscalculation
20:29was realized.
20:30There were not 400 bodies
20:32as first thought,
20:33but nearly twice
20:33that number.
20:34Some were found
20:35alongside a temple
20:36where recovery teams
20:37were just starting
20:38to work.
20:39Air Force Captain
20:40John Muscatelli
20:41talked to reporters.
20:43The original count
20:44of persons found dead
20:45at the Jonestown site
20:47has been found
20:48to be seriously
20:49in error.
20:50It now appears
20:51there may be
20:52as many
20:52as 780 bodies
20:55total
20:55found at the site.
20:58They were found
20:59simply buried
21:01under other bodies.
21:03There were larger adults
21:05that were grouped together
21:06and under their bodies
21:09were found the bodies
21:09of smaller adults
21:12and children.
21:12But the medical team
21:14were not the only people
21:15in Jonestown that day.
21:17During the immediate aftermath,
21:19Jeff Brilli was approached
21:20by a man in civilian clothes
21:22who asked him
21:23to guard a large box
21:24of documents.
21:26And he said,
21:26I'm from the U.S. Embassy.
21:28If anybody tries
21:28to take this box away
21:29from me,
21:30shoot them.
21:31And I said,
21:32you've got to be
21:33out of your mind.
21:33I'm not going to shoot anybody.
21:35And he told me
21:35that the box was full
21:36of sensitive documents
21:37and he needed to get those
21:38to the U.S. Embassy.
21:40I think he probably was CIA.
21:41The documents then
21:43disappeared into the CIA
21:45and their contents
21:46remain secret to this day.
21:49Twenty years later,
21:50the CIA continues
21:51to deny any interest
21:53in the People's Temple.
21:54They claim that
21:55their own file on Jones
21:56is empty.
21:58But new evidence
21:59reveals startling connections
22:00between Jones
22:01and members
22:02of the U.S. intelligence community.
22:04It began with a visit
22:05to Guyana
22:06by Congressman Leo Ryan,
22:08some of his staff
22:09and members of the press.
22:10He was later killed
22:11along with
22:12four other Americans
22:13including Don Harris
22:14and Robert Brown
22:15of NBC News.
22:16After the killings,
22:17the Guyanese authorities
22:19impounded the first
22:20tapes and notes
22:21made by the NBC crew.
22:22I had appeared on a public television
22:38several months ago
22:40with a group of black professionals,
22:44mostly psychologists and doctors.
22:46They invited me to appear today
22:48to provide information
22:50that they thought might be,
22:52that I might be able to help
22:53with this forum today,
22:54with their research.
22:56I appeared in Washington
22:58in February
22:58before the International Relations Committee
23:02and made some statements
23:04and some charges
23:04and documentation
23:05which resulted in the
23:07Foreign Affairs Committee
23:09or International Relations Committee,
23:10which they call it today.
23:12they voted to ask
23:14the House Select Committee
23:15on Intelligence
23:16to investigate my charges.
23:18And they are currently
23:19investigating those charges
23:20by the House Select Committee
23:22on Intelligence.
23:22Can you tell us
23:23what the charges are?
23:25Well, the charges
23:25basically are point
23:26made to
23:27CIA contact
23:30with both the
23:30Burnham government there
23:32and with
23:32the People's Temple.
23:34that originally
23:36it was my belief
23:38at the time
23:38I went to Washington
23:39that the purpose
23:40of our involvement there
23:42was to
23:43support the government
23:44of Burnham
23:45for commercial reasons
23:46and they used
23:48the People's Temple
23:48almost as enforcers
23:49to help support
23:51an unpopular government there
23:52to keep control
23:53of the government of Guyana.
23:57We knew that
23:58there had been an article
23:59in the San Mateo Times
24:00in December of 79
24:02which indicated
24:03that the Deputy Chief
24:04of Mission there
24:05Richard Dwyer
24:06was in fact
24:08the CIA Station Chief
24:10and he was the one
24:10that went to
24:11Jones Town
24:12with Leo's party
24:13and he claimed
24:14to be slightly wounded
24:15but there was a tape
24:16made at the time
24:17of the murders
24:18and suicides there
24:19with Jones yelling
24:21get Dwyer out of here
24:22get Dwyer out of here
24:23and the indications
24:24are that with Dwyer
24:25he went back
24:25into Jones Town
24:26after he was murdered
24:27and was there at the time
24:28and there's great questions
24:30just who shot
24:30Jim Jones and why
24:31whether Jones was shot
24:32to shut him up
24:33the question also
24:36as to how
24:36all these people died
24:37and just when they died
24:38which is all documented here
24:40but soon I came back
24:41from Washington
24:42because of my testimony
24:43I started getting documentation
24:45from a Berkeley psychologist
24:47called the Penal Colony here
24:49and from the Alliance
24:51for Preservation
24:51of Religious Liberty
24:52in Washington
24:52which indicated other things
24:54one of which was
24:55that George Philip Blakey
24:57was a top Jones aide
25:01and he was the man
25:03who arranged the purchase
25:04or the lease of the land
25:05in Guyana
25:05provided the money
25:06and arranged the lease
25:07down there in 1974
25:08he also was tracked
25:11now as being a CIA operative
25:13in Angola in 1975
25:16with Unita
25:17he's also
25:18the same guy
25:20who was a top aide
25:21who arranged all this
25:22purchasing of finances
25:23is also the husband
25:25of Deborah Layton Blakey
25:27who fled Jonestown
25:28and made those charges
25:29he's a brother-in-law
25:31of Larry Layton
25:31who was acquitted yesterday
25:33and it's interesting
25:35to note
25:36the Times Tribune
25:37says yesterday
25:39the jury acquitted
25:40in acquitting Layton
25:41the jury appeared
25:42to have agreed
25:43with the defense contention
25:44that Layton was brainwashed
25:45and drugged
25:45at the time of the shootings
25:46could not be held
25:47criminally responsible
25:47but the gist of what
25:48I'm getting to is this
25:49I've received
25:50a lot of documentation
25:51which I will value
25:52here today
25:53that indicates
25:54the strong possibility
25:55that Jonestown
25:58and the People's Temple
25:58was in reality
26:01a mass mind control experiment
26:04conducted by the CIA
26:05as a follow-up
26:06to something called
26:06MK Ultra
26:07which they conducted
26:08from the early 50s
26:10through 1974
26:11they used to use
26:13the VA hospitals
26:14and state hospitals
26:14they used the
26:16federal and state penitentiaries
26:17for their experiments
26:18do you think
26:19that Jim Jones
26:20was actively involved
26:21in the CIA?
26:23I do now
26:24do you have any conclusions
26:26as to how the people
26:27died in Jonestown?
26:29yes
26:30I have
26:31part of our documentation
26:32here
26:33is a report
26:35from
26:36which is
26:37attached here
26:39the chief medical examiner
26:41in Guyana
26:41is Dr. Leslie Motu
26:42he reported
26:45and this is attached here
26:46his opinion
26:48that more than
26:48700 of those
26:49bodies found
26:50at Jonestown
26:50were not suicide victims
26:52but were murdered
26:52they have
26:55he based this
26:56on the injection marks
26:57in the upper arm
26:58page 4
27:00of my
27:00of my
27:01statement here
27:03by injection
27:06yes
27:07and by
27:09and by
27:10and by
27:11gunfire
27:12there were a lot more people
27:13killed by gunfire
27:14than they've ever admitted
27:15so far
27:15we had heard reports
27:17that there were
27:1850 of them
27:18about 50 men
27:19with guns
27:20ringing around there
27:20so people couldn't get out
27:22very few of them
27:22did get out
27:23so it's
27:25according to the
27:27chief medical officer
27:28in Guyana
27:28most of the people down there
27:29were murdered
27:30rather than suicide
27:30who is suppressing all of this
27:32are you
27:32implying the CIA
27:34was active in the suppression
27:35yes I'm suggesting to you
27:37that
27:37a lot of things
27:38that don't make sense here
27:39I'm suggesting that
27:40the long delay
27:42in anyone getting in
27:44or the press getting in there
27:45or very many people
27:45all getting in there
27:46for several days
27:47was caused by
27:50a deliberate attempt
27:51to manufacture the story
27:53which has now been accepted
27:54and sold successfully
27:56to the American people
27:57and what is that story
27:59that you think
28:00the people are falsely accepting
28:01that in effect
28:03this was a large group
28:04of disillusioned
28:06or rather
28:08disoriented black people
28:11who went down to Guyana
28:12and who turned their backs
28:13from this country
28:14and committed suicide
28:15and we might as well
28:16we're good
28:17we're rid of them
28:18and that's just an aberration
28:19type of thing
28:20I think that's the story
28:21that's been peddled
28:21when you see the documentation here
28:24you'll
28:25begin to wonder yourselves
28:27why the first reports
28:28where 350 people died
28:30or 400 people died
28:31and for several days
28:32that was a report
28:33and many started
28:33finding more bodies
28:34when the first reports
28:35were there 500 fled in the jungle
28:37the people examined the bodies
28:38the first time
28:39and counted them
28:40counted them by name
28:41by names of people
28:42men, women, and children
28:43turned them over
28:44then a few days later
28:45they claimed to have found
28:46two or three stacks of bodies
28:49underneath those
28:49you know
28:50it boggles the mind
28:52the stories that were passed out
28:54but they apparently
28:55have gotten away with
28:56I think
28:57with one of the greatest
28:57fabrications of recent years
29:00what significance
29:01do you attach to the fact
29:02that the leadership
29:03of the temple
29:04was largely white
29:05and the membership
29:06of the temple
29:06was largely black
29:08I mention that
29:09in here
29:09I think that
29:10that's part and parcel
29:11of the whole thing
29:11I think that
29:12this is what caused me
29:13very suspicious
29:14about this whole experiment
29:15about the possibilities here
29:17the cadre was all white
29:19and yet we
29:20think of Jonestown
29:22as a bunch of black people
29:23who were committed suicide
29:24without mentioning
29:24that white cadre
29:25and that doesn't quite add up
29:27I think there are racist overtones
29:29of the whole thing
29:29what kind of racist overtones
29:31what are you exactly alleging
29:32I'm alleging that
29:33the media picture
29:34that was printed
29:35that was painted rather
29:36and then brought him out
29:38in print and so on
29:39was that
29:40you don't have to worry
29:41about these people
29:41because they're all crazy
29:42they'll do anything
29:43they're not like us
29:44it's my impression
29:47at this time
29:47that they were conducting
29:49some sort of
29:51mind control experiments
29:52for example
29:53they had a very modern
29:54hospital done
29:54which they bragged about
29:55so modern
29:57that in that population
29:59they had
30:00medical checkups
30:01for everyone
30:02every day
30:03so there's no need
30:05for that
30:05unless you're conducting
30:06experiments
30:06where you're having
30:07control groups
30:07and you're giving people
30:08and they gave them
30:09their vitamins
30:10every day
30:11and it's my guess
30:13that they were just
30:14using them as guinea pigs
30:15to see what they could do
30:16under isolated circumstances
30:18they take them off
30:19into a jungle someplace
30:20far away from everybody
30:21they get them there somehow
30:22and then they're able
30:23to see how these
30:24various drugs work
30:25on different groups
30:27could you tell us
30:28about the details
30:30of the murders
30:31in Guyana
30:31exactly how they were killed
30:32please
30:33well Dr. Mutu
30:35the pathologist
30:35at the site
30:36in Jonestown
30:37said that 70 to 80 percent
30:39of the bodies
30:39had a fresh needle mark
30:41in the back
30:41of the left shoulder blade
30:43at a point
30:43they could not
30:44have reached themselves
30:44and that the body
30:46showed evidence
30:47of having been forced
30:48to take the shots
30:49and the official
30:52coroner's verdict
30:54from Matthews Ridge
30:55by the Guyanese judge
30:57and jury
30:57that looked into
30:58the situation
30:59was that all the people
31:00had been murdered
31:01that not one
31:02had been a suicide
31:02Mutu found evidence
31:04of gunshot wounds
31:05and strangulation
31:06in many of the other bodies
31:07I studied about
31:08150 pictures
31:10in which I could see
31:11gunshot wounds
31:12there's no way
31:13that cyanide pathology
31:14explains the condition
31:15of those bodies
31:16all face down
31:17and you could see
31:18drag marks
31:19and the body count
31:20went up
31:20because the area
31:21was surrounded
31:22by 350 Guyanese troops
31:25about 200 British
31:27Blackwatch troops
31:28which are the equivalent
31:29of their Green Beret
31:30on maneuvers
31:31at Matthews Ridge
31:31in those days
31:33and American Green Berets
31:34that came in
31:35with the body
31:35clean up teams
31:36that spent the period
31:37of the five days
31:38murdering people
31:39rounding them up
31:40in the jungle
31:40the original reports
31:41were all 408 dead
31:43and then 700
31:44flee into the woods
31:46and the military
31:47said
31:47first the Guyanese
31:48can't count
31:49second that it was
31:50bodies on top
31:51of bodies
31:51though how
31:52you start with 408
31:53and end up with 915
31:54and say that the 400
31:56covered the 500
31:57makes no sense
31:58they said bodies
31:59in little piles
32:00they even said
32:01at the end
32:02after they'd been there
32:02for six days
32:03that they forgot
32:04to go around
32:04to the back
32:05of the pavilion
32:05and there were
32:06500 bodies
32:06back there
32:07I mean this was
32:08the final official
32:09explanation
32:09but these people
32:10were being killed
32:11yes
32:11small in this room
32:12there's an old
32:14junkie from Detroit
32:15who was a survivor
32:16of Jonestown
32:17the guy who said
32:18he hid under the
32:19Odell Rhodes
32:20what happened to him
32:22where is he now
32:23I don't know where
32:25all the survivors
32:26are
32:26many of them
32:29survived
32:29because they
32:30cooperated with
32:31the plan
32:31and were meant
32:31to survive
32:32that's the case
32:34with the basketball
32:34team and other
32:35people
32:36they were off
32:39somewhere
32:39they eventually
32:41got to Georgetown
32:41and eventually
32:42came back
32:42to the United States
32:43some of them
32:44were out on a ship
32:45the ones that
32:46were on the boat
32:47with Blakey
32:49went to Trinidad
32:51then they went
32:52to Panama
32:53and emptied
32:53a 5 million
32:55dollar bank account
32:56in Credit Suisse
32:57and then they
32:58went to Grenada
32:59they set up shop
32:59in Grenada
33:00I believe in the
33:00mental hospital there
33:01with Dr. Bourne
33:03and his father
33:03who worked in
33:04primate research
33:04with MK Ultra
33:05and Bourne set up
33:06all the methadone
33:07programs in the
33:08United States
33:08for the Rockefellers
33:09and I think
33:11they were experimenting
33:11on the mental patients
33:12because that's the
33:13only building bombed
33:14in the invasion
33:15of Grenada
33:15and there's 180
33:16people in the
33:17inmates in the
33:19psychiatric institution
33:20murdered
33:20dumped into a
33:21mass grave
33:22and then the U.S.
33:23was going to send
33:23400 million
33:24to rebuild the hospital
33:25and you know
33:27I mean
33:27they were going to
33:28make it a better
33:28unit to experiment
33:29on people
33:30after they got
33:30the right government
33:31in
33:32there were drugs
33:37and guns
33:38being smuggled
33:38in and out
33:39and there were
33:39relations
33:40of mercenaries
33:42some of these
33:42killers
33:43that were taken
33:45in and out
33:45of Angola
33:46the CIA backed
33:47UNITA forces
33:48by Blakey
33:49Iran mercenaries
33:50and they did run
33:51guns and drugs
33:52but the operation
33:53was primarily
33:53an extension
33:55of MK Ultra
33:55people were taken
33:56off the streets
33:57here in San Francisco
33:59out of the
33:59welfare rolls
34:00from the elderly
34:01homes
34:01from the psychiatric
34:03institutions
34:03from the prisons
34:04children were given
34:05as wards of the court
34:06and turned over
34:07into their control
34:08they put them
34:09in buses
34:10they took them
34:10to Miami
34:11and I talked
34:12to an air traffic
34:12controller
34:13when they landed
34:13in Guyana
34:14all of the blacks
34:15were bound
34:15and gagged
34:16coming off
34:17of the plane
34:17people five miles
34:18away didn't even
34:19know there were
34:19blacks
34:20at Jonestown
34:21all they had ever
34:22seen of People's
34:22Temple
34:23were the white
34:23crew that was
34:24running it
34:25going in and out
34:25of the cities
34:26they were buying
34:27Guyanese babies
34:27from women
34:28wherever they could
34:29give a blanket
34:29or something
34:30for a baby
34:30and taking them
34:31back in there
34:32and there was
34:32massive experimentation
34:33there were enough
34:34drugs on site
34:35to drug the population
34:36of Georgetown
34:37Guyana
34:37over 120,000
34:39for more than a year
34:40for a population
34:41of 1,200 people
34:42in this camp
34:43and Dr. Schacht
34:44who I believe survived
34:45he's not in the
34:46first death list
34:46he's added to the
34:48second
34:48I think he's related
34:49to Halmar Schacht
34:50to the Mike Reich's
34:51Minister of Finance
34:52who developed
34:53the phrase
34:55Arbeit Macht Frey
34:56work makes you free
34:58at the Auschwitz camp
34:59and they came
35:00to Houston
35:01that's where the
35:01Schacht family
35:02ended up
35:02they were the
35:03big bankers
35:03for Hitler
35:04and this guy
35:05is from Houston
35:05and he was
35:06not a doctor
35:07he was described
35:08as doing
35:09suturing on wounds
35:12without anesthesia
35:13and all kind
35:13of sadistic things
35:14and they had
35:15medical tags
35:16you can see
35:17even in Time
35:17Magazine
35:18medical tags
35:19on the people
35:20but an order
35:21came down
35:21from Zbigniew
35:22Brzezinski
35:22through Hague
35:23to Robert Pastor
35:24on site
35:25to strip bodies
35:26of all identification
35:27and tags
35:27and the bodies
35:28are left in the sun
35:29to rot
35:30so that no fingerprints
35:31no identification
35:32can be done
35:33from the tags
35:34and no autopsy
35:35can be done
35:36fluid or otherwise
35:36by the time
35:37they get back
35:37to the United States
35:38so you can never
35:39find out what killed
35:40them or how many
35:40drugs they had
35:41in the body
35:41they had one
35:42footlocker there
35:43with 11,000 doses
35:45of Thorazine
35:45and the drugs
35:46that are described
35:47are the exact drugs
35:48that were used
