West Ham fans were involved in clashes with stewards after attempting to get onto the pitch as their frustrations at their team's thrashing at the hands of Chelsea boiled over.

Social media users also claimed one young Hammers supporter did manage to access the pitch shortly after the Blues scored their fifth goal of a chastening night for the home side.

Thousands of furious West Ham fans had already been spotted leaving the London Stadium during the match as Chelsea ran riot.

It has been reported that one angry supporter managed to gain access to the pitch, but security staff at the stadium prevented any further breaches. Two fans were seen being restrained by stewards and escorted out as they attempted to contain the situation.

West Ham had made a promising start to the meeting with their London rivals as Lucas Paqueta put them ahead inside six minutes.

It was to prove a fleeting moment of joy for the majority of those inside the ground as Enzo Maresca's men took control, although they did have a goal ruled out for offside with the score at 1-1.

After falling behind, Joao Pedro equalised for the Blues before Pedro Neto put them ahead eight minutes later.

Enzo Fernandez gave Chelsea a 3-1 lead at the break, with Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah adding to the misery for the Hammers after the restart.

Parts of the London Stadium then turned mutinous as fans vented their anger at the players and manager Graham Potter.

Others had already voted with their feet as TV cameras caught hordes of supporters heading for the exit, and home sections of the stadium were sparsely populated at full-time.

The 5-1 defeat, and the manner of it, will heap further pressure on Potter after West Ham were comfortably beaten 3-0 at newly-promoted Sunderland in their Premier League opener last Saturday.

Chelsea lost Cole Palmer to injury in the warm-up, but they did not miss their star man as they got their first win of the new season after a 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
