La band racconta il suo quarto lavoro di studio
Trascrizione
00:00Quando approcci il writing di questo album,
00:09just wanted,
00:11I feel like we really put an emphasis on enjoying ourselves
00:16and even though we put a lot of effort into it
00:20and really made our decisions like carefully and everything,
00:27we still, I feel like, wanted to be,
00:30I'm not saying we achieved it,
00:32but wanted to be a bit more laid back in the approach
00:35and enjoy ourselves.
00:38I feel like the clearing wants to evoke a sense of peace
00:43and quiet self-reflection in a way that is not depressing
00:49or anxious making.
00:51And so, yeah, it just kind of reflects our process really.
00:58And even though these songs,
00:59like they're not all like super,
01:01they're not all really happy or like some of them are like a bit introspective
01:06and maybe even a little bit brooding,
01:09but they're still just trying to be a bit more like,
01:15I don't know, peaceful or something.
01:17People started writing songs, I think probably when Blue Weekend finished really.
01:21And so you kind of, you have a period of time where you'll promote,
01:25we were promoting Blue Weekend after that came out
01:26and we were all, you know, out on tour and people were doing writing by themselves.
01:29And then we came home and the date was in November or November, 2022 at the,
01:38someone just told me the name of the venue.
01:39It was the last show we played on Blue Weekend.
01:43So then we, I think we took like a couple months off or something like that, kind of.
01:50And then we got together in a place,
01:52a little studio in Seven Sisters in North London.
01:55And we started kind of playing together,
01:59just doing it really kind of primitively, really, to begin with,
02:02and just kind of playing songs on acoustic guitars
02:04and working on structures and melodies and the kind of,
02:11the building block kind of things.
02:14And then we went and recorded it.
02:16I mean, you know, we went off to LA with Greg Kirsten.
02:19We had a wonderful time.
02:20He's a great guy.
02:21His studio is amazing and he's very talented.
02:25But you saying, how did we fill four years?
02:26I'm going, how did we, how did that take four years?
02:29But it did.
02:30I always feel like after an album, it's like,
02:34you're, you just like, something happens where you're like,
02:37okay, right, I'm open to influence now.
02:41And I'm open to inspiration.
02:42And I feel like you've got to be kind to yourself with that.
02:46Because sometimes you're like,
02:47shit, I need to be writing a song and I need to,
02:49but actually you're, you are doing work.
02:52It's just like, you're just taking stuff in.
02:54And so I just always writing stuff down in my notes.
02:57I'm always like, yeah, just trying to watch a lot of films,
03:02listen to a lot of music, go out a lot.
03:06And yeah, just like be open to inspiration.
03:09And then by the time you sit down at your piano
03:13or sit down at your computer or meet up with your music friends or whatever,
03:18like you, you've got stuff to work with,
03:23like your, like quotes that you've written down on your notes app,
03:27or like playlist of tunes that you're like,
03:30I like this, I want to do something like this.
03:32And so, yeah, it just comes from that moment, that collection of inspo.
03:40If when you listen to the record, it's like, you can see,
03:43you can hear the band playing in front of you.
03:46And I think we've achieved that as well as having fun in the studio,
03:50and not completely sticking, you know, leaning against the wall,
03:53you know, is quite, is wonderfully cinematic in its own way.
03:56Yet we still have the other dynamics on the record.
04:00So I think we aim to achieve that.
04:01And I'd like to think we've done so.
04:03In terms of being a band today and looking back on the period of time where pop music
04:11was done by people in bands and the really popular music, the preeminent kind of stuff
04:17was done, yeah, in bands.
04:19So it's, you know, really interesting to look back a little bit at that period of time and go,
04:23you know, you know, what were people up to?
04:27So, yeah, in a sense, you know, some of the music of that period was, you know, informed this record.
04:34I wouldn't say solely, but, you know, it's probably a fair bit of influence from that period of time,
04:3960s, 70s or even 80s and, you know.
04:42It feels, I keep saying it, it sounds, maybe sounds insincere, but it is true.
04:47I feel this feels exciting and like a bit of a first time round again,
04:50for some reason on this album.
04:52I think we've all got a real, we put the last album out in COVID,
04:56which I think was actually probably quite a weird experience now that I'm reflecting on it.
05:00I don't know.
05:00I think we feel kind of similar to when we did when My Love Is Cool came out.
05:05It was just like kind of feeling like we don't know what's to come
05:08when people hear this record, which is really exciting.
