White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is facing backlash over her birthday gift, a Louis Vuitton purse from staffers. A video reportedly posted by White House advisor Margo Martin showed Leavitt’s surprise party with balloons, cake, and gifts, but the bright orange designer bag drew the most attention. Known for flaunting her luxury purse collection, Leavitt’s new French handbag sparked questions about her taste for foreign brands.

The controversy is due to President Donald Trump "Ameica First" agenda, urging citizens to “Buy American, Hire American” and imposing tariffs on European imports. Critics called the expensive gift hypocritical, pointing out the disconnect between Trump’s message and Leavitt’s luxury accessory. With many Americans struggling to afford gas, groceries, and healthcare, some said the moment carried a “let them eat cake” vibe.

00:00This week, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt is under fire, not for her words at the podium, but for her, quote, unpatriotic birthday present.
00:08Reports state that a recent video posted by White House communications advisor Margo Martin showed staff surprising Leavitt with balloons, cake, and gifts.
00:17But what really caught people's attention wasn't the decorations, it was the bright orange Louis Vuitton shopping bag sitting on a chair.
00:23The soon-to-be 28-year-old is well-known for showing off her luxury purse collection, from the brand's signature Never Fool tote to the $4,800 purse seen over her shoulder in a recently recirculated photo.
00:35Her love of foreign designer bags is clear, which may be why staff decided to add yet another piece from her favorite brand to the collection.
00:42Now, here's the problem.
00:44Donald Trump has reportedly built much of his political brand around, quote, America first policies, promoting American jobs, American manufacturing, and urging citizens to, quote, buy American, hire American.
00:55And according to The Guardian, the Trump administration has even imposed steep tariffs on imports from Europe to discourage Americans from buying foreign luxury goods.
01:03It's America first, all the way.
01:05And yet, Leavitt's luxury French handbag is about as far from made in America as you can get.
01:10And critics online didn't hold back either.
01:12One person summed it up bluntly, normal double standards for the Trump bunch, do as I say, not as I do.
01:18Others pointed out the tone-deaf optics while ordinary Americans struggle with rising costs.
01:23One comment read, maybe she can explain how the ordinary peasant is supposed to expect to buy groceries after the Trump administration is done with wrecking our economy and crashing our stock market.
01:33And another slammed the extravagant saying, normal people can't afford health insurance or gas, but you get another pocketbook.
01:39This has a very, quote, let them eat cake vibe.
01:42So while Caroline Leavitt may be thrilled with her new Louis Vuitton purse, the optics are fueling criticism of hypocrisy inside an administration that insists Americans should support domestic products first.
01:53But what's your take?
