00:00The elevator pitch for Netflix's award-winning comedy, The Thursday Murder Club, doesn't
00:05acquire much thought.
00:06It stars a quartet of classically trained thespians rather than two American comedy
00:11icons, and its only murders in the building is set in a posh British retirement community
00:16rather than an Upper West Side apartment building.
00:19Even though The Thursday Murder Club is technically based on a Richard Osmond novel that came
00:24out before Hulu's true crime-inspired series did, this whimsical adaptation from Chris
00:29Columbus clearly has a feedback loop.
00:31Twee aesthetics, cozy murder mysteries, and jokes about getting older are all staples of
00:37The Thursday Murder Club and Only Murders, respectively.
00:41However, their settings aside, there is one more significant distinction.
00:45The comedy in Only Murders comes from Steve Martin and Martin Short transforming into lovable
00:51buffoons who are far less competent than they appear to be.
00:53However, in The Thursday Murder Club, the savvy septuagenarians went out because the rest
01:00of the world undervalues them, as one character puts it.
01:04Many of them were very strong, very powerful in their time.
01:08According to The Thursday Murder Club, their time has not passed.
01:12While living in Cooper's Chase, a posh retirement community, a group of friends run the club and
01:18want to continue contributing to society.
01:20Their focus is on trying to solve cold cases that the police haven't solved in a long time.
01:26Ben Kingsley plays Ibrahim Arif, a retired psychiatrist who provides an attentive psychological perspective.
01:34Ron Ritchie, Pierce Brosnan, a former trade unionist, inspires the working class.
01:40Sweet retired nurse Joyce Meadowcroft, Celia Emery, is roped in as the group's newest member.
01:46Thanks to her lifetime of medical expertise and talent at whipping up cakes.
01:51Additionally, club leader Elizabeth Best, Helen Mirren, exudes the unwavering determination
01:57of a woman who may or may not have been a foreign spy in the past.
02:01As their latest cold case refuses to warm up, the group stumble upon the ultimate coup for
02:06a murder club.
02:07They overhear Cooper's Chase co-owners Ian Ventham, David Tennant, and Tony Curran, Jeff Bell,
02:13arguing, only for Tony to wind up bludgeoned to death in his home.
02:17They suddenly find themselves dealing with an active murder case.
02:21They are determined to solve the case, and they have some inside information from a friendly
02:25local cop, Naomi Ackie.
02:28This is especially important given that their prime suspect now is free reign to kick the
02:32retirees out of Cooper's Chase and turn it into luxury apartments instead.
02:37With so many pieces on the board, the plot becomes convoluted at times, and while Columbus
02:42is a steady hand at the directorial wheel, the film relies on gorgeous production design
02:47to make up for its uninspired cinematography.
02:50However, the real reason to watch is the murderer's row of actors, fitting the genre.
02:56The movie expands on its initial premise into a sprawling mystery involving Ron's famous
03:00ex-boxer son Jason, Tom Ellis, a notorious criminal lord played by Richard E. Grant.
03:06And Jonathan Price, whose performance as Elizabeth's memory-deprived husband elicits tender sympathy.
03:12Front and center, Kingsley, Brosnan, and Emory know exactly how to play their endearing pensioner
03:17archetypes, injecting jolts of light comedy into this tale of death and revenge.
03:23However, Mirren is the one who elevates the film above the syrupier tendencies of other comedies
03:28about elder statesmen, such as the best exotic marigold hotel and book club.
03:33Elizabeth is a whip-smart, determined protagonist worth rooting for in her hands.
03:38She doesn't need to be taught again how to grab life by the horns, because it's obvious
03:42that she never stopped.
03:43In contrast to other characters in the elder comedy genre, which frequently relies on jokes
03:48about elderly people acting like teenagers, she is a character who possesses dignity and
03:53self-confidence.
03:55Her performance gives a movie a foundation that makes the familiar plot feel new.
04:00Even though jokes are still made about the character's inability to answer a smartwatch
04:04call or open a PDF, it's nice to see a comedy like this show genuine respect for its older
04:10characters.
04:11The Thursday Murder Club's main flaw is that it is more approachable than particularly
04:15funny or clever.
04:16It ends up tasting more like an appetizer than a full meal, because of this.
04:21In point of fact, the Thursday Murder Club could easily be compared to a supersized pilot
04:26for an ongoing series, in which the gang solves a new crime each week, because the heroine
04:31is so enticing and the world is so engaging but underexplored.
04:35Osman has written three sequels and is currently working on a fourth, so it's possible that
04:39it is planned for a film franchise as well.
04:42If that's the case, this first entry argues for keeping Thursday's free to join.
04:46It is a song for the final two, so it is straightforward.
04:56If you do remember what happens then, you can do it.
05:00You will remember what happens if you do it, and you can write it down to the story.
