00:00This worm has a horrifying secret. This is the zombie worm, also known as Osadax.
00:07And this worm has a taste for flesh. Specifically, it's a whale-eater. When a whale dies,
00:14it sinks to the bottom of the ocean where scavengers like crabs and worms feast upon its
00:20rotting corpse. But the whale bones are too hard for most sea creatures to gnaw on. That is,
00:28except for the zombie worm. This worm has a unique set of jaws that allows it to latch onto whale bones
00:35and start chewing them up. It's like a shark attack, but with a worm instead of a shark.
00:42These zombie worms can grow to be over six feet long, and they have a light bulb at the end of
00:47their body that glows a spooky red color. This helps to attract prey as well as ward off predators.
00:55Because of this, the zombie worm is one of the most successful scavengers in the ocean.
01:01It's estimated that a single zombie worm can eat over 300 pounds of whale bone in a year.
01:07That's the equivalent of a full-grown human skeleton.
