For over 600 days in China, Norman Bethune braved enemy fire to perform hundreds of surgeries and treat tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians. He established battlefield hospitals, founded medical schools, and devoted knowledge, skill, and compassion to the Chinese people—ultimately sacrificing his life. On World Humanitarian Day, we remember Bethune—who wielded a scalpel like a soldier’s rifle, guarding the front lines of life amid war.
