Stonefish are often seen as dangerous sea creatures, but serious incidents involving them are relatively uncommon—especially in Australia, where awareness and access to medical care are high. While stonefish are among the most venomous fish in the world, they are not aggressive and pose little threat unless accidentally stepped on. Most stings occur when swimmers or divers unknowingly make contact with a camouflaged stonefish. Thanks to effective first-aid techniques and the availability of antivenom, fatalities are extremely rare. Stonefish use their venom for defense, not hunting, and with basic precautions—such as wearing protective footwear and avoiding contact with the seafloor in rocky or coral-rich areas—encounters can easily be avoided.
