00:00In the biggest, coziest oak tree in Whisperwood Forest,
00:04where the leaves always whispered secrets,
00:06lived a tiny owl named Allie.
00:09Allie was the fluffiest little owl we could ever hope.
00:13With soft gray feathers and two enormous golden eyes that shone like marbles.
00:20He had a very kind heart, but he also had a secret.
00:23A secret that made him feel very unknowable.
00:26You see, Allie was afraid of the dark.
00:29This was a very big problem, because everyone knows that owls are nocturnal.
00:34They wake up when the sun goes to bed,
00:36while his mama, papa, and brother would stretch their wings and give happy sleepy hoots.
00:43As the sky turned a velvet, Allie would just shiver in his neck.
00:47The dark is too big and too quiet.
00:50He would whisper to his mother, pulling a blanket of downy feathers over his neck.
00:54It's full of strange, swooping shadows and creepy, crawly noises.
00:59One evening, as the sun painted the sky with streaks of orange and purple,
01:03Allie's papa landed beside him on a sturdy branch.
01:06It's time to hug him, he said, his voice warm and proud.
01:10It's time for your first flying lesson.
01:13You're going to learn to soar and hunt under the moonlight.
01:16Allie's stomach did a somersault.
01:19Fly in the dark.
01:22The very thought made his feathers feel prickly.
01:24But he saw the hope in his papa's eyes and didn't want to let him down.
01:29With a gulp that felt like he'd swallowed a whole acorn, he climbed to the edge of the nest.
01:34He took a deep breath, spread his tiny wings, and died.
01:38He flapped and he fluttered, but he was so busy being scared of the shadows below
01:42that he forgot to look where he was going.
01:44Thumb, he landed right in the middle of a soft, prickly blackberry bush.
01:50Oof, he mumbled.
01:51He wasn't hurt, but when he untangled himself and looked around, his heart sank.
01:56He was lost.
01:57The forest was now a deep, dark sea of shadows, and his family's tall, familiar tree was nowhere
02:05to be seen.
02:06A big, wobbly tear rolled down his cheek.
02:09This was exactly what he was afraid of.
02:13Just then, through his own sniffles, he heard another sound.
02:17A tiny, pitiful sound.
02:20Sniffling.
02:21Sondering.
02:22Allie called out, his voice small in the vast dark.
02:26Who's there?
02:28A little voice replied.
02:30It's only me.
02:31Pip.
02:32I'm a firefly.
02:33I've lost my light, and now I can't find my way back to my family.
02:38I'm all alone, and I'm scared.
02:40Suddenly, Allie forgot about being scared himself.
02:44Someone else was small, and lost, and frightened, and they needed help.
02:49He hopped closer.
02:51In the faint starlight, he could see a tiny bug sitting on a leaf, looking utterly miserable.
02:56Don't you worry, Pip, said Allie, puffing out his chest just a little.
03:02My eyes are made for seeing in the dark.
03:05I'll help you find your way.
03:07For the first time, Allie really looked.
03:10He wasn't just seeing scary blackness.
03:12He was using his special owl vision, and the world was painted in soft shades of silver
03:18and gray.
03:19He could see everything clearly.
03:21Follow me, he said bravely, as they hopped and fluttered along.
03:26Pip asked.
03:27What's it like to see in the dark?
03:28Well, said Allie, it's not scary at all.
03:31Look, that big, spooky shadow over there is just a friendly old log wearing a cap of mushrooms.
03:37And that rustling noise isn't a monsteritz, just Mrs. Badger snuffling for her bedtime berries.
03:43He pointed with his wing.
03:46And listen, that's not a ghostly groan.
03:49That's the wind, singing a lullaby to the trees, making them sway and dance.
03:54Pip stopped sniffing.
03:56Really?
03:56It sounds rather nice when you describe it like that.
03:59Allie realized something wonderful.
04:02His heart wasn't pounding with fear anymore.
04:04It was swelling with pride.
04:06Because he was being a brave guide for his new friend, suddenly, a familiar sound echoed
04:12through the trees.
04:14Hoo!
04:14Hoo!
04:15That's my papa!
04:17Allie cheered, hooting back as loud as he could.
04:20The sound of strong wings filled the air, and Papa Owl landed right beside them, his face
04:25full of worry and relief.
04:26Allie, we've been searching everywhere, Papa Owl said, nuzzling him with his beak.
04:33And who is this little friend?
04:35The sun had dipped below the hills, and the forest was dark.
04:38Very dark.
04:40Little Owl sat on a tree branch, watching the last bit of daylight disappear.
04:45He was all alone.
04:47His papa was out hunting, and Mama Owl was tucked away in their nest with her little sister,
04:51who had sprained her wing and couldn't fly.
04:54Little Owl wanted to go help his mama, but he was too scared of the dark.
04:58So he just sat there, shivering, until he heard a small voice.
05:01Are you lost?
05:03Little Owl looked down and saw a tiny firefly with a tear on its face.
05:07I'm trying to get home, but it's so dark, the firefly said, its voice shaking.
05:13I can't see a thing.
05:14Little Owl felt a pang of sympathy.
05:16He knew exactly how that felt.
05:19But the thought of flying in the dark made him feel sick.
05:22So he just sat there, clapping his wings.
05:25Well, that's no good, the firefly said.
05:30Let me show you the way.
05:32And with that, the firefly zipped off into this.
05:37Little Owl hesitated, then took a deep breath and started the talk.
05:40After a while, he heard a familiar hoot.
05:44He called out.
05:44Who's that?
05:45It's me.
05:45Came the reply.
05:47Ali, is that you?
05:48Little Owl recognized the voice.
05:51It was Pip, the baby firefly from earlier.
05:54I was helping him get home because I could see the way.
05:56Just then, a tiny, sputtering light flickered on Pip's bottom.
06:01Blink, blink.
06:02It glowed, then shone as bright, tiny stock.
06:06You found your light?
06:07Ali exclaimed.
06:08I think I was just to let it shine, said Pip, his voice now happy and bright.
06:13Thank you for helping me be brave, Ali.
06:16And with a cheerful zip, Pip zipped off into the night.
06:20A tiny beacon heading home.
06:23Papa Owl looked down at Ali, his eyes shining with more than just moonlight.
06:28You were very brave tonight, little one.
06:31Ali hopped onto his papa's soft back for a ride home.
06:34As they flew up, up, up above the treetops, Ali looked down.
06:40The forest wasn't a scary, dark place anymore.
06:45It was a beautiful, sleeping world.
06:47The moon was a friendly, glowing face.
06:51The stars were a thousand tiny fireflies cheering him on.
06:54The wind's lullaby was the most beautiful music he ever heard.
06:58He wasn't afraid of the dark.
07:01Not one little bit.
07:03He was its friend.
07:05And from that night on, whenever the sun dipped below the hills,
07:10A little owl would whoop the happiest, proudest hoot of all,
07:13Ready to explore the wonders of his starlit world.
