The 2025 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 E Performance seems to be designed for purely fun driving. At the pinnacle of the lineup, this high-performance convertible roadster is equipped with an F1-derived hybrid powertrain that delivers an astonishing 805 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque. This power comes from a V8 twin-turbo engine boosted by a powerful all-electric powertrain—a technology developed by AMG based on what they learned from F1 racing. The car's name is a guide to its identity: AMG for the performance line, SL for a sports roadster, 63 for the most powerful engine, S for sport, E for electric, and Performance for the additional enhancements in driving dynamics, power, and handling. Starting at $207,000, this test model clocks in at approximately $225,000, making the SL 63 E Performance a true trophy car.

Inside, the experience is defined by sophisticated technology and classic Mercedes luxury. The car starts silently in electric mode, with the engine coming alive in Sport or Track modes. The multimedia screen has a unique anti-glare function, allowing you to change its angle with a tap, while the "Hey Mercedes" voice control system handles everything from navigation to climate, and even telling jokes. The flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel is a control hub, featuring dials for drive modes, suspension, engine sound, and the rear wing. Luxury amenities abound, including massaging seats, ambient lighting, and "air scarf" vents in the headrests that provide warm air. With a design that allows it to be driven in all conditions, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 E Performance is an all-year fun-driving vehicle for those who want to get "wind in their hair" while experiencing breathtaking performance.

00:00This is the Mercedes-AMG SL 63e Performance for a little wind in your hair.
00:08The SL Roadster is the classic Mercedes-AMG.
00:12It's that two-seater, really this is a four-seater, designed for purely fun driving.
00:17Over the years, Mercedes has refined the Roadster.
00:21This is an AMG, which means it has a performance engine.
00:24There are several variations of the performance engine,
00:27and we're looking at the very top of the line.
00:30This is an F1-derived hybrid power with a plug-in SE Performance model
00:36that tops out at 805 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque.
00:42It's powered by a V8 twin-turbo, Mercedes calls it bi-turbo,
00:47and it's boosted by an all-electric engine.
00:51AMG developed this powertrain based on what they learned from F1,
00:55and they rolled it out for the first time last year in the C63 SE Performance model,
01:02which is actually a four-cylinder electric boosted sedan
01:06that delivers an incredible amount of power
01:08and proved their theory that they could get the most power out of this technology
01:13of pairing a powerful engine and an electric powertrain.
01:18Every element in the car's name has a meaning.
01:22So it's Mercedes, AMG is the performance line,
01:25SL indicates that this is a sports roadster,
01:2963 is the top of the line, that is the most powerful engine,
01:33S is for sport, E is for electric,
01:36and performance is the whole package it is really designed to perform.
01:40We're looking at the top of the line, it has an entry-level price of $207,000.
01:45Our test model comes in at about $225,000.
01:49That includes a lot of special details on the inside,
01:52as well as that high-performance engine.
01:55You can step it down to the six-cylinder that delivers 577 horsepower,
02:00or down to the four-cylinder turbo that delivers 419 horsepower,
02:05and that has a starting price of somewhere around $112,000.
02:09Starting up the Mercedes-AMG SL63 is a little bit of a surprise.
02:17Because it's electric, it starts silently.
02:20If you want to hear the engine, you can turn it into sport mode,
02:24and it instantly comes alive.
02:26If you put it in sport plus, it's a little throatier,
02:29and then there is track mode.
02:32Because this is a convertible, glare can be an issue,
02:35and Mercedes thought about that too,
02:37and they allow you to do this.
02:39You can actually change the angle of the screen
02:42to ensure that there's never glare on the screen.
02:45You can quickly access your drive modes here, as well,
02:48by tapping the AMG button,
02:50or you can use the dial on the steering wheel.
02:53You can set comfort for the cabin
02:55and turn on your massaging seats here,
02:58and then there is this.
03:00Hey Mercedes.
03:02How can I help?
03:03Tell me a joke.
03:04Why did the tomato blush?
03:07Because it saw the salad dressing.
03:10In addition to telling you a joke,
03:13the Mercedes system will perform all sorts of functions.
03:16Of course, the basic ones are navigation, sound, and climate,
03:21but there are other things that the system can do as well,
03:23including settling a bet and doing math homework.
03:26Over the last few years,
03:27Mercedes has really evolved the steering wheel.
03:29You'll see the AMG badge here that's flat-bottomed to give it a sporty feel.
03:34We have our drive modes over here,
03:36and then we have our suspension, engine sound, and rear wing over here.
03:41And then this function allows us to customize our driver display.
03:46That way, my passenger can play with the music on the center screen,
03:50and I always have my maps right in front of me.
03:52You'll also have a head-up display that allows you to see key information
03:56projected on the windshield in front of you,
03:58and you'll never have to take your eyes off the road.
04:01Also on the steering wheel, we have classic paddle shifters.
04:04Mercedes AMG has labeled them for shifting up and shifting down.
04:09The stop-start button is on the center console,
04:11tucked behind the center screen.
04:14The dash in our model is covered in leather,
04:16but you'll also see the turbine air vents,
04:19which are a classic Mercedes design detail.
04:22Surrounding the entire cabin, though, is ambient lighting.
04:25Set your lighting to your preferred colors,
04:27and then drive at night.
04:28It really is glorious.
04:30Putting that convertible top down is important.
04:32So that control is right here on the quick access bar.
04:37And if you want to put the top up,
04:39you slide it over, and you have to hold this,
04:41but it will perform the function automatically
04:45and put the top up for you.
04:52Not everyone needs 805 horsepower,
04:55but those who may regularly drive the Autobahn
04:57or who like to spend time on a racetrack
05:00will really appreciate it.
05:01With a starting price of $207,000, though,
05:04this really is a trophy car.
05:06The real purpose of the Mercedes AMG SL63
05:11is to have fun and get a little wind in your hair.
05:14But Mercedes wants you to do it all year long.
05:17It's designed to be driven in all sorts of conditions
05:20and every single day of the year.
05:22And people who drive it love it that much
05:24that that's what they do.
05:25You have to do it all year long.
05:25See you now.
05:30You can get a little bit more.
05:32You have to try to clean up plenty of enemies
05:34right there.
05:37You can get there.
05:39You can get a little bit more.
05:42You can get there.
05:44You can't get a little bit more.
05:47Sorry about how you're going
05:49going to get a little bit more.
