00:18Karuna Karan and his 73-year-old son Rajan are proud residents of Pullampara,
00:24the Gram Panchayat in rural Tirvanantapuram,
00:26the first in the country to achieve full digital literacy in 2022.
00:32At 103, Karuna Karan is slowly losing eyesight and memory,
00:37but still gets excited to make a video call to see his grandchildren.
00:41And Rajan, who earlier used a keypad phone,
00:44is now adept at using all main apps on his new smartphone.
00:5658-year-old Shamala, returning home after work,
01:09is talking to her children on a WhatsApp call.
01:12She tells her daughter about the television crew filming her.
01:15Shamala and many others in Pullampara
01:17were trained by the Women Army of Kerala, Kutumbashree,
01:21a state-sponsored empowerment project.
01:25The training was conducted in three modules comprising 15 activities.
01:29It covered basics like installing apps,
01:31using WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media,
01:34sending messages, searching on YouTube and Google,
01:38shooting pictures and videos,
01:40booking cooking gas,
01:41paying electricity and other utility bills.
01:43The 15th activity was creating awareness about digital scams.
01:48Anyone successfully completing six of the 15 activities
01:51is deemed to be digitally literate.
01:53We did study very much in a couple of different jobs.
02:02I was the teacher in a couple of different places.
02:03The family took four hours,
02:05and I was the teacher,
02:07the teacher took six hours to see each other.
02:10The students came to school and go to school and make a lot of classes.
02:12I was very surprised.
02:14The students took six hours to do it.
02:17Oh, before the day,
02:18the students took a while and the students took a long time.
02:20It is not a range.
02:22Our family, John Britta,

02:28Pullampara's success inspired Kerala to adopt its model.
02:32It's the country's first state to achieve
02:34complete digital literacy at 99.98%.

02:52In 1991, 34 years ago,
02:54Kerala became the first Sintian state
02:56to achieve total literacy.
