00:00Hello and welcome back to Sinar Daily Sports Matters Podcast and I'm your host Ashwin.
00:05Setiap minggu, or most of the times, most of the episodes we will try to bring our former athletes, current athletes.
00:14But this time, it's a bit special because kita bawa ataupun we brought someone special because this scene is booming right now in the sports industry which is rock climbing.
00:28Okay, whether indoor or outdoor, that is secondary. But let's dive into this and our athlete today is Xiangyi from Batu Climbing and welcome to the show.
00:41Thank you so much and it's my pleasure to be here.
00:44Thank you and let's dive straight into it. This rock climbing, like me, for a gym goer for me, it can be a bit intimidating.
00:58I'll tell you why but I'm not representing anyone. I'm telling from my POV.
01:02Every time I see this rock climbing, it has been there for many years actually, it's intimidating because most of the time I see people active in this sport, I've never seen them active in any other spots.
01:19This is my POV. And when they're into it, they are really into it. Hence the reason why I said intimidating.
01:26So, where this passion started, how it started, is it from social media or someone introduced to you or how is it?
01:37So, I stumbled upon rock climbing when I was trying to look for a hobby for my little sister.
01:43And ever since we were little kids, we liked to climb trees, we would climb the fence of our house, we would climb up the sofas and fall and knock our heads.
01:51So, climbing was something that we always enjoyed. So, one day when we passed by a mall and we saw a climbing wall, we were so intrigued by it.
01:59So, we signed up for my little sister to try it. She enjoyed it and then we joined along.
02:04I see. This was like how many years ago?
02:07This was around four years ago.
02:09Four years ago?
02:09Yeah.
02:10Let me ask a very, very Malaysian question.
02:13Yeah.
02:14Is it an expensive spot?
02:15So, the price range of it depends entirely on you. You can find a gym that suits your price range.
02:25You can find equipment that suits your price range. So, for me, I don't like spending too much on equipment, especially when I was beginning.
02:34When I was starting out, I found the shoes that were the most value for money. I found the gym that was the most value for money.
02:40And slowly, when I progressed and I found that it was something that I wanted to pursue professionally and seriously, then only I started investing.
02:47So, in the beginning, it's not too expensive to get into.
02:51And sports, from sports perspective, if let's say you want to be part of these sports, and if someone with plus size, are they okay to try it?
03:05Or they have to strengthen themselves first, or slim down? How does it go?
03:11I think that climbing is for everyone, no matter your size and no matter your age.
03:17No matter if you are plus size or small size, come and try it.
03:23There are so many. So, climbing, you get to choose different levels.
03:27So, there are easier levels, and then there are harder levels.
03:32And you can choose a level that is suitable to you, that's comfortable for you.
03:37And most of the people are trying, because rock climbing, climbing itself is like a mental sport.
03:44Yes.
03:45Can this be associated with mountain climbing as well?
03:51Is rock climbing the first step before you go into that?
03:54So, in the past, people climbed outdoors first.
03:59And then they trained indoors when they were unable to climb outdoors.
04:03So, let's say they have this route that they wanted to climb on this beautiful mountain.
04:09But then during winter time, or during the rainy season, they're not able to climb it.
04:14So, they were trained in their gyms inside.
04:16But that was what it was like in the past.
04:19Currently, indoor climbing is its own thing.
04:22So, I would say that indoor climbing and outdoor climbing are very different.
04:28Walk us through.
04:29Yes.
04:31If let's say you're going tomorrow, and then two days later you go again.
04:36How is your recovery?
04:38How is your per week?
04:40How many sessions do you go to?
04:42And do you need a trainer?
04:44For instance, like gym.
04:46I've done it 10 years ago.
04:48So, I know the methods.
04:49So, when I re-entered into the gym industry again, I've decided I don't need a trainer.
04:56I can recall my methods.
04:59So, I apply it.
05:00So, in these sports, are you allowed to be solo or you do need a trainer?
05:06As a woman, the way I approach climbing as well as recovery is according to my monthly cycle.
05:15So, there are weeks where I feel really strong and I can push my body.
05:20So, I honour my body and I do that.
05:22But then, as a woman, there are weeks where I need to rest.
05:25And during my rest weeks, I rest completely.
05:27So, instead of following a weekly schedule or a planned weekly schedule, I follow my monthly schedule that is tailored to me.
05:40And regarding whether or not you need a trainer, the climbing scene, I've been in many different sports.
05:45And the climbing scene is one of the most welcoming and most, yeah, one of the most welcoming scenes I've ever been in.
05:55I remember when I just started climbing, there was this one route that I was struggling on.
06:00And people around me could see that I was struggling.
06:03And I kept falling off.
06:04And the seniors, they came up to me and then they gave me advice on their own.
06:09So, they would just come up to me and say, hey, I have an idea.
06:12Why don't you try putting your foot on that hold?
06:14Why don't you try lifting your hand and putting it over there?
06:17So, people are just so nice and so willing to teach and guide the younger generation.
06:24Because they were also once beginners who were taught by their seniors.
06:29And I find it lovely that we pass on a tradition.
06:33If you want a trainer, go for it.
06:36And if you don't, it's fine too.
06:39Really?
06:39Yeah.
06:40If you ask anyone in the climbing scene, if you ask anyone, how do I solve this problem?
06:46I am certain that they will be more than happy to help you.
06:50There are two questions in my mind right now to connect with your answers.
06:54One of it is, did you exert any point of your period of venturing into this?
07:03You realize this is going to be a serious sport in Malaysia.
07:06Did you come across that?
07:09Yes.
07:09I came across that when climbing became an Olympic sport.
07:14So, climbing became an Olympic sport two Olympics ago.
07:18Before that, it wasn't in the Olympics.
07:19So, once it was registered in the Olympics, it started booming.
07:24Gyms started.
07:25It brought on the booming of the sport.
07:29More gyms appeared.
07:30More competitions appeared.
07:32and I saw how other climbers from other nations could take this path professionally
07:38and live off it, build a career around it.
07:42My other question was, mental health is no more a hidden topic in our routine these days.
07:52It affects due to your work, due to your lifestyle and everything.
07:58So, how rock climbing addresses mental health?
08:02Alright.
08:02So, I entered rock climbing when I was in a very dark place mentally.
08:09And rock climbing became my piece.
08:11So, climbing, my favourite part about climbing is the meditative state that it puts you in.
08:19For example, climbing isn't just about how fast you can go
08:23or how difficult you can climb.
08:28I like to climb long routes that require me to have a rope and a harness.
08:33So, I'm on the wall climbing by myself for maybe five minutes at a time,
08:37just me and the wall.
08:38And during that time, my brain feels silent.
08:41It's quiet, I'm in a flow state, I'm entirely present, it's just me
08:46and the next move ahead of me.
08:49It's just me and the wall and peace and quiet.
08:52And that was so healing for me.
08:54And it's not just me, but so many climbers, fine climbing,
08:59to be something that not just heals them,
09:04it reignites the children in them.
09:07Like when we were kids, after school, we would go to the playground
09:10and we would play, right?
09:11So, if you go to the climbing gym and you sit there during after work hours,
09:15for example, like six or seven,
09:17you'll see adults come in wearing their office clothes,
09:21their adult clothes, holding their briefcases,
09:24and then they change into their usual clothes, their normal clothes,
09:28and they start playing.
09:29So, climbing reminds us and reignites that joy,
09:37that playful nature in us that is so often taken away
09:41when we step into adulthood.
09:43I kind of guessed it because earlier you said during your childhood,
09:49you used to climb trees and had to knock the head and everything.
09:54You see, that is a normal childhood.
09:56Yeah.
09:56These days, you know, something like that happens to your kid.
09:59It can be a police case because, you know, you abandon your child,
10:03you were not being watchful, you know, all these things.
10:05But that is a normal childhood and see where it brought you now.
10:09And let's go and connect this to younger generation now.
10:15Gen Z are heavily influenced with social media.
10:18So do us as well.
10:19We also because we want to keep up professionally as well.
10:23So, as they heavily influenced in social media,
10:27how has these platforms impacted young generation to get into this industry?
10:33So, I think that social media is a way to introduce this sport to many.
10:41In the past, I didn't know what climbing was.
10:44And maybe a lot of young people these days don't know what it is.
10:49But then they see their friend post this story
10:51of them in this colourful place climbing these rocks.
10:56And then they get curious.
10:57They ask like, oh, what's this?
10:59And then they get introduced into climbing.
11:01And it also allows us to network with all the climbers around the world.
11:06And we get to see what is humanly possible.
11:11What climbers did in the past.
11:15We get to build an online community.
11:21For a young person listening to this right now,
11:26or someone who is interested in climbing,
11:30what's the first step that someone has to take?
11:34If I were you, I would look into,
11:37I would go on my phone or my computer
11:39and I would Google search, climbing gym near me.
11:42And then I would just see which one is the most convenient for me.
11:45I would go to the gym and ask for a day pass.
11:49So a day pass is just an entrance.
11:51So all you need for your first climbing session is a day pass
11:54and a pair of rental shoes.
11:56That's it.
11:57Something like bowling as well.
11:58Rental shoes and a day pass.
12:01And if you like it and you want to pursue it further,
12:03then you can take the further steps.
12:05Now since you're very seasoned,
12:07how long does it take for your activity to start and end?
12:10If I'm training for a competition,
12:14I would usually do,
12:16including warm up and cooling down,
12:18my sessions would be around three to four hours
12:20if I'm preparing for a competition.
12:22But if it's recreational,
12:24the time would be similar,
12:26but it wouldn't be so much of constant climbing and training.
12:31It would be a lot of socializing.
12:33Because all my friends are in the gym
12:34and people in the gym are so friendly.
12:36so you would stop and chit-chat a bit
12:38and then climb something.
12:39That's that one world where you step into it
12:42and you don't talk about work.
12:44Yeah.
12:46It's totally different topics.
12:49Do you socialize up there?
12:52On the wall?
12:53Yeah.
12:53Okay, so let's say you and your friend
12:55are climbing side by side up at the top
12:58and then you guys are resting at the same place.
13:00Yeah, you can totally chit-chat.
13:02But chances are you will not talk about work.
13:04The focus.
13:05Yeah, chances are you will be talking about the route.
13:09Earlier you mentioned about the meditating state.
13:12You have addressed it as well.
13:14But can you give or dive more into that?
13:18The meditating state.
13:19So the meditative state that I was describing
13:22is called the flow state.
13:24I would equate it as to,
13:27do you run?
13:28Yeah.
13:28Okay, so when you run
13:29and when you've been running for a while,
13:31how do you feel?
13:32Does it feel like you enter a runner's high?
13:35Yeah, it's a different phase,
13:39I would call it.
13:40Where you're entirely present.
13:42You're present in your body.
13:43You're present in the moment.
13:45Everything shuts down.
13:46Everything shuts down.
13:47You cannot hear these little noises in your head.
13:50It's just you and the moment.
13:52And it's just so beautiful.
13:53So that's what you were saying, meditating.
13:56It helps you connect with yourself.
14:01Three to four hours,
14:02whether leisure
14:03or you're preparing for a competition.
14:07How do you,
14:09as a professional,
14:10you're working in office,
14:11you're working in
14:12sites,
14:13construction,
14:14this and that.
14:15how to balance
14:17your time,
14:19your routine.
14:20I would say that
14:21you have to listen
14:22to your body.
14:23If you've had a tough day at work
14:25and you're tired
14:26and you don't feel like
14:28exerting too much force
14:29but you still feel like
14:30showing up at the gym,
14:32then show up,
14:33chill with friends,
14:34climb some easy routes.
14:35If you've had a stressful day at work
14:37and you want to let off
14:38some steam
14:38and you want to
14:40exert your body,
14:42then show up
14:42and do what you want to do.
14:44So it's entirely personal.
14:46It's entirely up to you.
14:48And
14:48do you think
14:50all these years
14:51and Olympics now,
14:53do you think the government
14:54is actually looking into it
14:56or
14:56do you think they have
14:57yet
14:58to look into this industry?
15:00I think that
15:01the government
15:02does look into it.
15:04At the same time,
15:05I think that the government
15:06can look into it
15:07even more.
15:09Yeah.
15:09Why do you say that?
15:11Because
15:12I look around
15:13and I see
15:14Malaysian talent
15:16all over.
15:17I see our Malaysian talent
15:19training
15:19hard
15:21daily.
15:22They're pushing themselves
15:23to the limit
15:24daily.
15:25And if they could have
15:26that extra bit of help,
15:28support.
15:29They could bring
15:29the Malaysian flag.
15:30They already do.
15:31But they could bring
15:32the Malaysian flag
15:33to newer heights.
15:34The Malaysians here,
15:35if you go to the gyms
15:36and you look at our athletes,
15:38they are so diligent.
15:39they climb
15:41till their fingers
15:41bleed,
15:42literally bleed.
15:43They push
15:44through injuries.
15:45They push
15:46through exhaustion
15:48because of how much
15:49passion they have
15:51in this sport
15:51and how much
15:52they want to progress
15:53in this sport.
15:54And
15:54they deserve
15:57that help.
15:58They deserve
15:59that help
16:00to make Malaysia proud.
16:01and
16:02moving on
16:03recognition
16:03as well.
16:05Maybe you can
16:06tell the audience,
16:08those who are watching,
16:10what are your
16:12achievements
16:12through this
16:14sporting industry?
16:16So,
16:17I'm just a,
16:18I'm,
16:18I'm not
16:19anything special
16:20or not,
16:21not,
16:22like,
16:23I'm just a very
16:24normal,
16:25normal climber.
16:26I have won
16:27a few
16:28competitions
16:30but it's
16:31nothing to,
16:31nothing to boast about.
16:32They're just,
16:33just
16:34extra bits of joy
16:36of part of the journey.
16:38I,
16:38yeah.
16:39and
16:40with
16:42maybe
16:44these
16:45sports
16:45and making
16:46into the
16:46Olympics
16:46and everything,
16:48do we
16:49see
16:51potential
16:52at least
16:52representing
16:53in our country
16:53getting enough
16:55support from
16:56a sporting
16:57body like
16:58KBS,
16:59Youth and Sports
17:00Ministry?
17:01I think that
17:01they need
17:02more support.
17:03More support.
17:04Not just in
17:05climbing
17:06but in their
17:07recovery.
17:08Recovery,
17:08yes.
17:09how does
17:10recovery
17:10work here?
17:12So,
17:13with climbing
17:14it is a
17:15full body
17:15sport
17:16and
17:17also
17:18injuries
17:18happen
17:19all the time.
17:20For example,
17:22we get a lot
17:22of finger
17:23injuries
17:24where we
17:25get,
17:26so there are
17:26tendons over
17:27here
17:27and our
17:28tendons
17:29they either
17:29tear
17:30or they
17:30snap.
17:31We also
17:31get a lot
17:32of shoulder
17:32injuries,
17:34wrist injuries.
17:35When we
17:35fall wrong
17:36we get
17:36our neck,
17:37our back
17:37injuries
17:38or our
17:39legs.
17:40So,
17:40climbing can
17:41be a sport
17:42that you
17:44may get
17:45injured in.
17:47And if we
17:50and sporting
17:52bodies can
17:53support through
17:54these challenges,
17:56I think it will
17:57be even better.
17:57because in
18:00the end
18:00when we
18:01do
18:01compete,
18:02we are
18:03wearing
18:03the
18:03Malaysia
18:04flag
18:06proudly
18:07and we
18:07want to
18:08stand there,
18:09stand on
18:09the podium
18:10and hear
18:10Nagaraku
18:11being played.
18:13That's true.
18:14And
18:14this is also
18:16another
18:16Malaysian
18:17question also.
18:19For those
18:20with fear
18:21of heights,
18:22is this
18:24a suitable
18:25spot for
18:25them?
18:26And has
18:26there been
18:28any case
18:29studies
18:29where
18:30thanks to
18:32these
18:32spots,
18:33I'm not
18:33scared of
18:34heights anymore.
18:35Has there
18:35been any
18:35case
18:35studies?
18:36So,
18:37there is.
18:38Okay.
18:38And that
18:39person is
18:39me.
18:40Okay.
18:41All right.
18:41Yeah.
18:42So,
18:42I firmly
18:44believe that
18:45the only way
18:46out of
18:46fear
18:47is through
18:48it.
18:48I remember
18:50the first
18:50time I
18:51tried
18:51climbing
18:51a very
18:52very
18:52high
18:52wall.
18:53It was
18:54an
18:54indoor
18:57climbing
18:58gym,
18:58you
18:58usually
18:59see
18:59four
19:00kinds.
19:01First
19:01is
19:02boulders.
19:03So,
19:03boulders
19:03is around
19:05that
19:05height.
19:06So,
19:07maybe
19:07three
19:09meters,
19:09four
19:10meters.
19:11Okay.
19:11So,
19:11those we
19:12don't have
19:12a rope
19:13attached to
19:13us.
19:13You
19:13climb to
19:14the
19:14top
19:14and
19:15then
19:15you
19:15climb
19:15down
19:15a
19:15little
19:16and
19:16then
19:16you
19:16jump
19:16off.
19:17And
19:17there
19:18is
19:18auto
19:18wall.
19:19It
19:19works
19:20like
19:20this
19:21automated
19:21system.
19:22You
19:22know
19:22when
19:22you
19:23have
19:23your
19:25name
19:25tag
19:25and
19:25then
19:26there's
19:26this
19:26little
19:26round
19:26thing
19:27that
19:27you
19:27can
19:27pull
19:28out,
19:28tap
19:29your
19:29card
19:29and
19:29then
19:29it
19:29will
19:30automatically
19:30retract.
19:31So,
19:32that's
19:32how
19:32the
19:32auto
19:32wall
19:33works.
19:33You
19:33attach
19:34it
19:34to
19:34your
19:34harness,
19:35you
19:35climb
19:35up
19:36and
19:36then
19:36when
19:36you're
19:37done
19:37climbing,
19:38you
19:38just
19:38let
19:38go
19:39and
19:39this
19:39pulley
19:40system
19:41lets
19:41you
19:41down.
19:42So,
19:42that's
19:43auto
19:43wall.
19:43And
19:43then
19:43we
19:43have
19:44top
19:44rope
19:44which
19:45is
19:45a
19:45pulley
19:45system
19:45on
19:46the
19:46top,
19:47a
19:47rope
19:47attached,
19:48one
19:48climber
19:49as
19:50the
19:50climber
19:51and
19:51the
19:51other
19:51as
19:52a
19:52belayer
19:52and
19:52then
19:52you
19:53climb.
19:54And
19:54then
19:54the
19:54last
19:55one
19:55which
19:55is
19:55my
19:55favorite
19:56is
19:56called
19:56lead
19:56climbing.
19:57So,
19:58lead
19:58climbing
19:58is
19:59where
19:59you
20:00look
20:00at
20:00the
20:00wall.
20:01It's
20:01a
20:01very
20:01high
20:01wall
20:02and
20:02there
20:02are
20:02no
20:03ropes
20:03attached
20:03to
20:03it.
20:04There
20:04are
20:04little
20:05clips
20:05on
20:05the
20:06wall.
20:06As
20:07you
20:07climb
20:07up,
20:07you
20:07bring
20:08your
20:08rope
20:08and
20:08you
20:09clip
20:09it
20:09into
20:10every
20:10little
20:10clip.
20:11So,
20:11that's
20:11my
20:12favorite.
20:12Okay,
20:13that's
20:13your
20:13favorite.
20:13So,
20:14if
20:14you
20:14were
20:15afraid
20:15of
20:16heights,
20:17I
20:17would
20:17recommend
20:18you
20:18going
20:18into
20:19what
20:19you
20:19feel
20:19comfortable
20:20with.
20:20So,
20:21let's
20:22say
20:22you
20:22want
20:23to
20:23do
20:23something
20:24lower.
20:24I
20:24would
20:24go
20:24into
20:25bouldering.
20:25Let's
20:26say
20:26you
20:26want
20:26to
20:26do
20:27the
20:28climbs
20:28that
20:28require
20:29you
20:29to
20:29wear
20:30harness
20:30and
20:30rope.
20:31I
20:31would
20:31climb
20:31but
20:31then
20:31I
20:32would
20:32when
20:32I
20:32feel
20:33uncomfortable
20:33when
20:33I
20:33look
20:34down
20:34and
20:34I
20:34think
20:34hey
20:35this
20:35is
20:35a
20:35bit
20:35too
20:36high
20:36up.
20:37I'm
20:37done.
20:38Then
20:38I'll
20:38just
20:38tell
20:39my
20:39belayer
20:39or
20:39I'll
20:39just
20:40let
20:40go.
20:41So,
20:41it's
20:41up
20:42to
20:42you.
20:42You
20:42don't
20:43have
20:43to
20:43push
20:43yourself
20:44to
20:44where
20:45you're
20:45uncomfortable
20:46if
20:46you
20:46don't
20:46want
20:47to.
20:47But
20:47if
20:48fear
20:48is
20:48something
20:48that
20:49you
20:49want
20:49to
20:49conquer
20:49I
20:50find
20:50that
20:50the
20:51best
20:51way
20:51to
20:51get
20:51through
20:52fear
20:52is
20:53to
20:53understand
20:53why
20:54you're
20:54afraid.
20:55I
20:56was
20:56afraid
20:56that
20:59being
21:00so
21:00high
21:00up
21:00if
21:00I
21:01felt
21:01I
21:01would
21:01hurt
21:01myself.
21:03So,
21:04I
21:04sat
21:04down
21:04and
21:04I
21:05observed
21:05the
21:05mechanism.
21:06I
21:06observed
21:07all
21:07the
21:07climbers
21:08going
21:08up
21:08and
21:08down
21:09and
21:10I
21:10saw
21:10how
21:14of
21:15the
21:15knowledge
21:16of
21:16I
21:17will
21:17be
21:17safe
21:18even
21:19if
21:19I
21:19climb
21:19high
21:19up
21:20was
21:21repeatedly
21:21proven
21:22to
21:22me.
21:23It
21:23allowed
21:23me
21:24to
21:24face
21:24that
21:24fear.
21:26Step
21:26by
21:26step.
21:27Yeah.
21:28Okay.
21:29And
21:29another
21:29myth.
21:30I
21:30love
21:31asking
21:31myth
21:31questions.
21:33You
21:33know why?
21:34Because
21:34our
21:34country
21:35and
21:35netizens
21:35are
21:36famous
21:36for
21:36that.
21:36Before
21:37even
21:37trying
21:38they
21:38will
21:38conclude
21:38certain
21:38things.
21:39For
21:39example,
21:40I
21:41am
21:41pretty
21:41sure
21:41you
21:41saw
21:41on
21:42social
21:43media
21:43where
21:43they
21:43always
21:44say
21:44pickleball
21:45won't
21:45last.
21:47Give
21:47it
21:47another
21:48year.
21:49Bungkus.
21:50So
21:50has
21:52there
21:52been
21:53a
21:53myth
21:53where
21:53people
21:53going
21:54around
21:54and
21:54saying
21:55rock
21:55climbing
21:55won't
21:56last.
21:56This
21:57mall
21:57next
21:58year
21:58this
21:59gym
21:59won't
21:59be
21:59here.
22:00So
22:00if
22:00there
22:01is
22:01a
22:02myth
22:02such
22:02like
22:03I
22:03said
22:03how
22:05you
22:05will
22:05debunk
22:05this
22:06myth?
22:07So
22:07I
22:08personally
22:08have
22:09not
22:09heard
22:09that
22:09myth
22:10because
22:10climbing
22:11is
22:11is
22:12it's
22:13been

22:14while
22:15in

22:15but
22:16it's
22:17been

22:17so
22:18much
22:18longer
22:18all
22:19around
22:20the
22:20world
22:20and
22:22it's
22:22proven
22:23that
22:23climbing
22:25is
22:26something
22:26that
22:26is
22:26so
22:27it's
22:30a

22:31that
22:31is
22:31so
22:31colourful
22:32that

22:34alive.
22:34understood
