During a press briefing event on Tuesday, Boston City Council Member Ruthzee Louijeune (D-MA) spoke about warnings sent to sanctuary cities by President Donald Trump.
Transcript
00:00Thank you, Senator Markey. Thank you, Mayor Wu. Thank you to everyone for being here.
00:08Boston is our city. This is our city. Now, I'm not a Baptist preacher, Reverend Brown,
00:15but I got to start with a little call and response. Whose city?
00:19Our city. Whose city? Our city.
00:23Whose city? Our city.
00:25Thank you. And I want to make sure that our president, the occupant of the White House,
00:30and I want to make sure the attorney general hear that this is our city and we can run our city.
00:36And we have been running our city. We are not going to be scared.
00:41We will not do what the president is doing every single day, engaging in bottom feeder politics,
00:47trying to use fear to make us think that we are doing something wrong when we know what works here in our city.
00:58We are a city for everyone, for the fifth generation Bostonian, for the person who recently came here.
01:10This is your city and you belong. We will say that every day.
01:16We will say that in every single language and we will mean it and we will put our resources behind it.
01:22Our immigrant communities are here, are working and are contributing to our community, to our city every day,
01:30to our tax space, to our hospitals, to our schools, and they are making our city safer every single day.
01:38We will not believe the lie and the hype about crime.
01:41We know, as the mayor has stated, that he is using these fear of crime to hide the fact that he cannot deliver for the American people,
01:49that he is failing every single day.
01:53Your groceries are not cheaper. Your kids are still having a hard time buying a home.
01:58School is too inaccessible for so many of our families, but yet he wants to lie about our American cities.
02:04He wants to lie on us in Boston and we will not have that.
02:07We will not have that here in our city. We will not have that here on the Boston City Council.
02:11And I am so glad that I am here with a supermajority of my colleagues.
02:15With Councillor Brayden, an immigrant from Ireland.
02:23With Councillor Coletta Zapata, whose parents are from Italy and Mexico.
02:27Councillor Durkin, with roots in Spain.
02:31Councillor Webber, from a Jewish family.
02:34Councillor Mejia, Santana, and Pepin, representing the Dominican Republic.
02:38Council World Round, representing Barbados and Jamaica.
02:44We are a city that is stronger because of all of who we are.
02:48And I am ever so proud, every single day, to be here to represent one of the most vibrant,
02:56one of the strongest immigrant communities that we have here in the city of Boston, the Haitian community.
03:01And my seven-year-old nephew is around here somewhere
03:07because it is important for him to see the city that we are trying to build every single day.
03:13And every single day we work a little bit harder.
03:16We try to do a little bit better than the day before.
03:19We are not saying that we are a perfect city, but we are working on it every single day.
03:22And we do not need to take any cues from a failing federal government.
03:26Not yesterday, not today, and not tomorrow.
03:31And on the Boston City Council, we will continue to do the work of every single neighborhood.
03:36From East Boston to Mattapan, from Mission Hill to Charlestown.
03:41And we will let you know that we represent you in every single way possible.
03:45And that we are going to continue to fight that the mayor talked about.
03:49One that believes in investing in childcare, in our schools, in housing.
03:53And believes that community safety works when our police officers are working with all of our communities,
04:00including our immigrant communities.
04:02And so I just want to make sure that people know that we are not backing down.
04:07That we know who we are and that we are going to continue in this fight.
04:10And we have this beautiful representation of people here, from labor, to our seniors, to our elected officials,
04:18to say that we are not backing down and that this is our city.
04:22And so, and so I'm going to start to our veterans, we got Haywood Fennell in the house.
04:32Think about this, we have a president who is cutting the veterans budget.
04:38Like, how lower can you go?
04:42And so, I want you to know that this Boston City Council, our mayor, our federal delegation,
04:47stand with you every single day.
04:49Because when we fight...
04:51We win!
04:52Cuando luchamos...
04:53Cuando luchamos...
04:54Cuando luchamos...
04:55La nubatai...
04:56We win!
04:57Okay, thank you.
04:58Y'all got to work on your cry-out.
04:59But thank you, everybody.
05:00Thanks, everybody.
