The Australian Ballet returns to Queensland with local lead dancer

The Australian Ballet has returned to Brisbane with a Queensland dancer making her debut in Sleeping Beauty's lead role. Molly Slattery reports from the dressing rooms of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

00:00Oh sorry, I'm just getting ready and that's because the show is in town.

00:07The Australian Ballet has come to Brisbane.

00:11Now QPAC right here in South Bank will host the ballet until Saturday.

00:15Now this is an absolutely mammoth production.

00:18The Sleeping Beauty is the show on this week and it's one of the largest in the ballet's

00:22repertoire.

00:23It includes more than 50 dancers every single night including some of these.

00:27We've got Nymph number 57 who will be on stage at some point.

00:32Now this show is absolutely enormous.

00:34The almost three-hour odyssey includes more than 120 costumes every single night.

00:40But the one I am most excited about is the costume that 28-year-old Isabel Dashwood, a

00:46Queensland girl, will be wearing tonight because she is debuting in the lead role of Aurora.

00:53Now we had the absolute privilege of chatting to Isabel earlier this week between her grueling

00:57rehearsal schedule.

00:58And here's what she had to say about performing in front of a hometown crowd.

01:02It feels really special to come back now as a professional at this point of my career

01:07and reflect on how far I've come and all those moments that have led me to be where I am

01:12now.

01:13And there's nothing like performing to a crowd that's just completely got your back and wants

01:17you to succeed.

01:18So it's nice to have familiar faces out there.

01:21Now Isabel's artistic director says she is more than ready for the challenge.

01:25And as are all of the rest of the incredible dancers on show this week, they'll be performing

01:30all week long right here at QPAC, supported by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

01:35So a real feast for the eyes and ears here in Brisbane this week.
