Mean Girl Murders (2023) Season 3 Episode 9- Cold as Ice
Transcript
00:00She was one of those people who behaves like they're instantly your friend.
00:13It was kind of hard to shake her.
00:15It was like one minute, oh, she's just a friend.
00:18No, she's my best friend.
00:20They couldn't be more opposite, but they did actually have things in common.
00:25Boys.
00:26Having someone to help us escape Alaska was a big thing.
00:31It was just a matter of escaping the isolation.
00:37She trusted everybody, and I was scared for her.
00:42When people go missing in Alaska, it can feel really hopeless.
00:47A vicious murder from thousands of miles away.
00:50I was praying to God, please be some form of good news, please.
00:55When I found out about the Snapchat post, I was like, what the F is going on?
01:00I was born and raised in Anchorage.
01:05Anchorage is pretty desolate, right?
01:09The winters are pretty long and dark.
01:11I mean, the highway that connects from Alaska into the lower 48 is really long.
01:18If you don't stop for gas at the right times, you'll never get gas again.
01:24It feels like growing up, seeing teenagers from the lower 48 almost felt like a novelty because they were so different, and they had these different lives.
01:37They had lives that, like, to me, were, like, people on TV, almost.
01:53Like, the people in commercials get to do those things.
01:57But, like, no, we don't have an Ikea.
02:00We don't have any of that.
02:02Way up north in the last frontier, teenage girls are just built different.
02:07They have to be.
02:08I was raised in a long-standing Alaskan family.
02:12A lot of kids and teens here are self-reliant.
02:15We were raised as we were foragers.
02:17We are here to be ourselves.
02:20We're not here to please anybody.
02:21It was our way of surviving.
02:23And if there's a teenage girl in Anchorage who embodies the independent frontier spirit, it's Denali Bremmer.
02:32Denali is the highest mountain in North America, and it matches her personality because Denali has a very powerful personality.
02:41She's not a meek young woman.
02:43Denali had a very difficult early childhood.
02:47As a child, Denali had no control over her life, and she was very self-reliant.
02:56The time that I first met Denali Bremmer would have been 2017.
03:01She had joined cross-country running at Service High School.
03:05Denali was very friendly.
03:06She was very, like, outgoing and gregarious, and she was funny in kind of a quirky way.
03:13Denali played by her own rules.
03:16She was kind of edgy that way.
03:19Denali did not easily make friends with girls.
03:21She just seemed to like hanging around with boys younger than her, including Caleb Leland and Caden McIntosh.
03:32Denali and her guys were doing pretty typical teenage rebellions.
03:37They were skipping school here and there.
03:39They would flip off cop cars when they went by.
03:42They were a group of misfits up to some mischief.
03:45Denali, being this boss leader lady, enjoyed having this group that she could really command.
03:54And like male drones to their queen bee, Caleb and Caden are loyal and always ready to serve.
04:00Every time I met Denali, there was a driver, and that was Caleb.
04:05Caleb helped Denali go wherever she wanted.
04:09If you were her friend, you were almost a minion.
04:13Denali had no problem telling people off and doing whatever she wanted to do.
04:18She was a very intense person, and if you got on her bad side, she made sure that you knew it.
04:25Denali might be the captain of her own band of lost boys.
04:29But in the fall of 2018, a new student at Service High School will show her that girls play by a different set of rules.
04:36Cynthia Hoffman transferred into Service High School because it was a bigger school, more diverse, more able to meet everyone's academic needs.
04:45As Cynthia was going into her senior year, she starts going by CeCe.
04:49First time I met CeCe, I was walking down the Service Corridor going to the cafeteria.
04:57CeCe had a very outgoing personality, and that was really comforting for me because I was very reclusive.
05:03It could be tough at Service finding kind of where you belong, and she brought me on my show.
05:10We did a lot of things.
05:11We did slumber parties with our friend Bailey.
05:14I first met CeCe at Robert Service High School.
05:18She was a confident person.
05:20She would go up to everybody and make friends with them.
05:25She's already like that loud, bubbly person, but I absolutely love that about her.
05:30She liked music, boys, you know, the normal teenager stuff.
05:36She just wanted to have friends.
05:38She just wanted to fit in.
05:40She introduced me into anime.
05:42There was an anime club at Service, and she was like,
05:45oh, you should come to this club with me at lunch.
05:47We were the misfits.
05:49We didn't really belong anywhere, we just kind of belonged everywhere.
05:52This tight circle of friends seem unbreakable until the day CeCe meets Denali at school.
05:59Instantly, the two girls are inseparable.
06:02For Cynthia, when she met Denali, that friendship was very quick.
06:07It was like, one minute she's just a friend, now she's my best friend.
06:11Like, what changed there was from one minute to the next?
06:14It's not surprising that she was drawn to Denali because she couldn't be more opposite than CeCe.
06:20Denali was living her life and had no rules.
06:24I'm sure that was kind of a draw for CeCe to look at someone living that way
06:28and have some curiosity about getting in trouble a little bit.
06:33The thing that I saw about Denali on Cynthia's social media was like,
06:36hey, this is my new bestie, she's really cool.
06:39You know, I wouldn't fight anyone for her.
06:42I think that CeCe saw Denali as, like, a fun person to be around.
06:46And she liked the rebellious nature of Denali just because, like,
06:49ooh, I can never do this, I'll get in trouble.
06:56As they started to spend more time together, they realized they did actually have things in common.
07:00They liked to go outdoors, they liked to talk about boys.
07:03And Denali started to realize, oh, I actually do enjoy having a female friend.
07:10Cynthia was interested in dating.
07:13She was a little more awkward about it.
07:15She was very much someone who would wait for you to make the first move.
07:20CeCe, she had a few crushes.
07:23She'd get, like, really giggly and excited about it.
07:26And then if they end up dating, it's super fun, but it's never very long.
07:29Both CeCe and Denali love boys.
07:32But they were very, very different.
07:35Denali went after what she wanted very aggressively.
07:38Denali wanted what Denali wanted, and she would do whatever it took to get it.
07:44But I am leaving till I get my wish of dopamine.
07:48CeCe may be 100% Team Denali, but the members of her girl squad have questions.
07:56Denali did have a, I don't give a attitude, you know?
08:06And it was very concerning for me to see Cynthia with someone like that, because Cynthia was very much eager to please.
08:15Denali was one of those people who kind of behaves like they're instantly your best friend and is, like, by your side and is constantly talking to you, constantly asking questions, constantly involving themselves in, you know, your conversations.
08:30It was kind of hard to shake her.
08:33The girls grow even closer until the spring semester of CeCe's senior year, when her fantasy of a true romance finally starts to look like a reality.
08:45There was one boy named Zach.
08:48They had more of a situationship.
08:51They would flirt off and on, and are we an item, are we not?
08:55CeCe always talked to me about Zach.
08:58CeCe would be like, Zach and I were really good at first, but now we don't know what's gonna happen next in their relationship.
09:06But at the end of May, she said that her and Zach broke up.
09:12And the reason why shocks everybody.
09:17Denali claimed that she ended up sleeping with Zach.
09:24And this led to a huge blowout.
09:27You can imagine both sides of Denali saying, I do what I want.
09:33And CeCe being, you're my friend, you're not supposed to break these kind of girl code rules.
09:40For Denali, to sleep with Zach, I could understand CeCe's anger.
09:45Having someone betrayed like that, I could see why that would cause a fight.
09:49I would be very angry, very hurt.
09:52For CeCe, this was a line that should not have ever been crossed.
09:57Many of us have had relationships where you tolerate certain things, but what you don't really realize is slowly those resentments are building up.
10:06Even the most patient friends have their breaking points.
10:10After everyone found out about Denali and Zach, CeCe's friends began to notice slight changes in CeCe.
10:28She'd get in her head and kind of shut down a little bit.
10:32And that, I mean, for most of us here in Alaska, that's normal.
10:36We weren't raised to talk about our feelings.
10:39She was almost avoidant of conflict.
10:43I talked to CeCe.
10:44I told her that Denali probably wouldn't be the best friend that CeCe wanted her to be.
10:49But CeCe really did believe in that friendship.
10:52She wanted to keep their friendship going as best as she could.
10:57CeCe wouldn't have pushed back on anything.
11:00She really cared for Zach, but she didn't want to, like, be in the middle of conflict all the time.
11:06So she would just let it go.
11:09CeCe and Denali made up.
11:11They were able to move on past that and continued with their friendship.
11:19No one knows for sure if Denali really hooked up with Zach.
11:23But CeCe writes it off as a one-time thing and is ready to move on, especially when a new guy slides into her DMs.
11:31When she said that, her and Zach broke up.
11:33CeCe also said, hey, I might have found a new guy online named Joseph.
11:38She wanted to find another guy to be with.
11:42And I'm like, okay, that's a little odd.
11:45How do you go from one person to the next in, like, the next week or so?
11:48CeCe trusted everybody.
11:51The thought of not having anybody there or anybody to listen scared Cynthia.
11:57And having that caring aspect was very important for her.
12:02After her blow-up with Denali over Zach, CeCe keeps her new flirtation with Joseph under the radar.
12:09Meanwhile, never one to play it safe, Denali jumps head first into her own online romance with a handsome stranger.
12:21Denali went online often and she would try to lure much older men.
12:26She would say, I will do certain things. If you are interested, text me.
12:31And then she would send photos to them for money of her doing certain things that they wanted her to do.
12:39One of the men that responded to her was named Tyler.
12:44And Tyler was this good-looking guy who said he was a millionaire who lived in Kansas.
12:51He and Denali began corresponding.
12:54She called Tyler babe and he called her angel.
12:58She got to know him, got to like him, claimed she fell in love with him.
13:02In the spring of 2019, CeCe was graduating high school, which was a huge deal.
13:15Academics didn't come the easiest to her.
13:18So for her to be graduating, it brought out the whole family to the ceremony.
13:23All of her siblings and her parents are cheering her on.
13:26It was a really big deal.
13:29After Cynthia graduated high school, her main goal was to work with her dad, Tim Hoffman, at his handyman service.
13:38Cynthia loved working with her dad.
13:41She loved to do the prepping, taping everything off.
13:45She just really loved the hands-on learning.
13:48She and Denali still say they are thick as thieves.
13:51But those who know CeCe best are starting to see cracks in their friendship.
13:57After her graduation, I feel like Denali and Cynthia did become closer.
14:02It was almost like they were inseparable.
14:05But a lot of the friendship that CeCe and Denali had, it seemed very transactional.
14:12Denali never had an issue asking for anything.
14:15She would ask Cynthia to buy her things.
14:18Oh, I don't have enough for this. Can you buy me food? Can you buy me just random things?
14:23Denali saw someone that she could have control over.
14:28Someone who she could influence.
14:33I feel like Denali might have been unwilling to let her have other friends.
14:43A couple times I tried reaching out to her and being like, hey, you want to hang out today?
14:47And she'd be like, oh, I'm hanging out with friends.
14:49Like, she wouldn't really even, like, specify who she was hanging out with.
14:53It was just friends or very short, simple answers that were very vague.
14:57I didn't get to see her as much.
15:01It was overwhelming to kind of realize that, in a sense, I was losing my friend.
15:14Cynthia is really into anime.
15:16It was a tradition for us to go together kind of as a group.
15:20We'd go to Comic Con, Senshi Con, sometimes they call it Arctic Con.
15:24Cynthia always seemed happiest at the conventions.
15:28But that year, like, two days or three days beforehand, she had called me and she was like,
15:33hey, I'm going to go with someone else.
15:36I ended up going, and I saw her there with Denali.
15:46And it was almost like she wasn't even acknowledging me.
15:50It was very unlike her, because usually when she saw people she knew, it was, hey, how you doing?
15:57And it was almost like, in a sense, like, she was on a leash.
16:01She didn't feel comfortable enough to come say hello.
16:04And it kind of hurt.
16:05I respected Cynthia's friendship.
16:08I wanted her to be able to go out there and make friends in the world.
16:15But while we were at Senshi Con, I had heard something I was concerned about.
16:20There was a couple of times Denali would make jokes calling Cynthia to her face.
16:26And that was very emotional for me, because it did hurt Cynthia a lot.
16:31You could kind of see it in her face, but she would always kind of fix that mask and make it look like she was okay.
16:38Cece's cold shoulder might leave a chill, but a true best friend will always have your back and lend an ear, no matter what.
16:46There were times where Cynthia would have a bit of a meltdown.
16:53She would be very emotional.
16:55There was one time on a phone call after her and Denali had gotten in a fight that Cynthia was like, Denali is mad at me.
17:02I don't understand what I did wrong.
17:04And I'm like, what did you do wrong?
17:06Like, what are we talking about here?
17:07And I just remember her repeating, I don't know what I did wrong.
17:11I don't know what I did wrong.
17:12Cece started to become, like, secretive.
17:19Cece didn't want anyone to know what her and Denali were, like, fighting about.
17:26Because Cece wanted to try to deal with it on her own.
17:29And it was weird, because we all saw that.
17:32Cece was trying to find ways to get out of that relationship.
17:35And just when it seems Cece has decided to cut bait with Denali,
17:40she gets an offer no true Alaskan girl can refuse.
17:47On June 2nd, Cynthia and one of her sisters went to the mall.
17:55They were hanging out, having fun, looking for makeup, clothes, and just, you know, clowning around in the mall.
18:05And while she was at the mall, she received a text from Denali asking her if she wanted to go on a hike that day.
18:14So they make a plan to have Kayden and Denali pick Cece up from the mall and head off to Thunderbird Falls to take a nice and easy hike.
18:21Cece always loved hiking and outdoors.
18:27And Thunderbird Falls was always a popular place to go.
18:34There's areas in Thunderbird Falls where it's very private.
18:40We used to throw parties up there as kids.
18:43They have their own main trails and stuff like that, but you can get off the beaten path, you know, and find little private spots on the creek.
18:50Once Kayden and Denali arrived at the mall, Cece tells her sister goodbye and she's off.
18:57That day, Tim called me up and said, we're going to go do a job, go grab Cynthia and bring her to the job site.
19:08So I called Cynthia and there was no answer, which was not normal.
19:16She always answers when I call.
19:19You just could sense that there was something off.
19:24I have a bad feeling about this.
19:27Later that afternoon, Timothy Hoffman is waiting for Cece to return home from her hike.
19:45And he starts to get a little nervous because he's not hearing from her with their normal check-ins.
19:51Timothy asked me if I knew where Cece was.
19:57And I told him no, but I can give her a call and see where she is myself.
20:01And every time I would try to call Cece, straight divorce bill.
20:06It was very concerning because Cece would always pick up her phone whenever we need to talk to her.
20:14Eventually, he did receive a text from Cece that said,
20:20Oh, yeah, I went on this hike and my friends dropped me off at a park.
20:23But when he tried to call, there's no answer.
20:29So even though he got that text, he was already on edge feeling like something was wrong.
20:37Later on that evening, Timothy is so concerned, he actually does go to the police department
20:42because he wants to file a missing persons report.
20:45The police were trying to tell him that not to worry.
20:49You know, kids do this all the time.
20:50He goes, no, you don't understand.
20:53You know, my kids check in every two hours.
20:55We don't have that kind of relationship.
20:58We let each other know where we are and what we're doing.
21:02He told me I got texts from her, but she would answer her phone.
21:06If I call, dad calls, you answer.
21:11They were not able to take a police report that night.
21:14Because number one, she was responding to text messages.
21:17And number two, she was 19 years old.
21:19She's technically an adult.
21:20She can do whatever she wants.
21:22She doesn't have to answer the phone for her dad.
21:25Every minute that Cece is gone feels like an eternity.
21:29And in Alaska, time is the enemy.
21:33Honestly, teens go missing in Anchorage a lot
21:36because of various, you know, disasters that occur,
21:40like a bear attack or a moose attack.
21:43Constantly there are missing flyers for teens in Anchorage.
21:48We definitely have a really big issue with, like,
21:50missing and murdered Indigenous women.
21:52One study put Alaska fourth in the nation for missing
21:55and murdered Indigenous people, mostly women.
21:57And that same study said Anchorage has the third highest
22:00number of cases of any city in the country.
22:03Depending on, like, what you're doing and who you're with,
22:07it's really easy to get kind of mixed up in sex trafficking
22:12and also drug trafficking.
22:15When people go missing in Alaska and in Anchorage specifically,
22:20it can feel really hopeless because it's really spread out.
22:25And so there's a lot of places a person could go or be taken.
22:35Timothy did know that Cece was supposed to be going on a hike with Denali.
22:39So he reached out to Denali going,
22:41you're her best friend.
22:42You were supposedly with her this afternoon.
22:44What the heck is going on?
22:46Denali said she wanted me to drop her off at the polar bear playground
22:52and she was supposed to meet a guy.
22:54And I don't know much about the guy.
22:56I'm a little bit worried about what happened to her.
22:59Once things fell apart with Zach,
23:03Cece was still seeking that great love that every teenage girl is looking for.
23:08As a teenager in Alaska, she's online and she's on social media.
23:13And it's there that she's meeting people from all around the world
23:17and really opening her eyes to a lot of possibilities.
23:21Could this guy Denali is concerned about be Joseph?
23:25The mystery man Cece told Bailey about.
23:27There had been some boys in Cece's life that Denali just had a bad feeling about.
23:32Denali had this theory that Cece was very innocent.
23:37You would even say naive.
23:39And Cece was going to be meeting up with a boy,
23:43which was kind of scandalous.
23:45So that's why she wouldn't have told her father.
23:47Was she meeting up with someone that the family didn't know about
23:51and putting herself in a really dangerous situation?
23:54Everything was concerning.
23:57Cece has been missing for less than 24 hours.
24:03So police can't pull her phone records just yet.
24:06But those closest to Cece can't help worrying that Joseph
24:10or some other guy she met online could have pushed her to meet up in real life.
24:15It is really hard to get out of Anchorage.
24:18And it can be really frustrating and really lonely.
24:22A lot of people would use, like, online chat rooms and dating
24:27to connect with people in the lower 48.
24:29And some of them did go and, like, meet those people.
24:33For us, having someone to help us escape Alaska was a big thing.
24:41And it wasn't even, like, a matter of, like, escaping Alaska.
24:45It was just a matter of escaping the isolation.
24:49Talking to the people in lower 48 made us feel a little more connected.
24:55It made us feel like we weren't so far away or so foreign.
25:04I thought that Cece was kidnapped by this guy named Joseph,
25:10who probably would have been way over her age.
25:14I was scared for her.
25:16On June 2nd, we had a hard time sleeping.
25:32We were all worried, sick.
25:35We'd all stay up, doing shifts of staying up,
25:37just to see when Cynthia comes home.
25:39But she never came home that night.
25:43After a sleepless night, the morning of the 3rd,
25:49Tim went back to the police station
25:51and once again tried to file a police report.
25:53This time they did take the information down
25:57and started that investigative process.
26:00Given what Denali had said about Cece's disappearance,
26:04that when she dropped her off,
26:05it seemed like she was maybe gonna go meet with a boy.
26:08That was the first direction everyone thought to look.
26:11But there just wasn't really any evidence of a secret boyfriend.
26:15So, Timothy took it upon himself to do what he called going hunting.
26:21And he contacted all of his motorcycle friends
26:23and asked them to help in the search.
26:25The search party focuses their effort on Russian Jack Springs Park,
26:31where Denali dropped Cece off the day before.
26:34We went to that park,
26:36and I had a group of 10 people.
26:39There's a big wooded area,
26:42which used to be a camping area.
26:45It starts at the Polar Bear Park,
26:48and we were gonna just go comb through the woods.
26:52We thought, you know, if anything happened,
26:55we'd find her.
26:57We were all walking the trails, calling her name.
27:01We were trying to go to the park
27:03and just see if we'd seen anything.
27:06And at that point, you know, I'm a little anxious,
27:08but I'm also more hopeful
27:10because we had a couple kids come up and say,
27:13Hey, we think we saw Cynthia just here with a guy.
27:19We were, like, excited because we got a lead.
27:22It did give me a little bit of hope
27:24that everything was gonna be okay.
27:26She's gonna come home.
27:27We're gonna find her.
27:28But the next day, the news broke out.
27:35While everyone is still searching for Cece,
27:37her Uncle Don went to Polar Bear Playground
27:40just to look for himself to see if there was any sign of her.
27:43And what he was shocked to find was nothing.
27:50There were no investigators, no police presence.
27:53No one else was there.
27:55And he couldn't understand why.
27:58A cop happened to be in the parking lot
28:01of the Polar Bear Park.
28:03I said, how come there's nobody out here from the police,
28:06you know, searching for Cynthia?
28:09And they go, oh, we already got news
28:12that Cynthia was up at Thunderbird Falls,
28:15and we're looking for her there.
28:18And that's when I knew that it was not gonna be good.
28:25I could just feel it right down in my bones.
28:28Anchorage police have received a tip
28:30that directs them to retrace Cece's steps
28:32all the way back to Thunderbird Falls.
28:36All her family can do is wait.
28:41Tim and I were in his office,
28:43and he gets a knock on the door.
28:46He goes, I need to step out for a minute.
28:53Please.
28:54Please.
28:56And I just pray, I was praying to God,
28:58please be some form of good news.
29:01Please.
29:03And he comes through the door, silent.
29:08Slams the door.
29:11Doesn't say a word.
29:13And punched a hole in the wall.
29:15Tim got the news that they found Cynthia at Thunderbird Falls,
29:25shot in the back of the head,
29:32execution style,
29:37in the river.
29:39And we just, we just all cried.
29:42We cried.
29:45Hard.
29:47So hard.
29:49I remember feeling,
29:51when I found out what had happened,
29:53just this gut-wrenching anger.
29:58This hurt.
30:00And this fire.
30:04I don't remember much after that day.
30:07I think I locked myself in my room for 48 hours.
30:12And I didn't want to be bothered.
30:14I didn't want to talk to anybody.
30:15I just shut down.
30:21She just had her whole future ahead of her.
30:25She wanted to get married, have kids.
30:29She knew nothing was easy in life,
30:32but she just wanted to enjoy her life.
30:35So, if you could just give me a second.
30:39Excuse me.
30:40Oh, my God.
30:48Because Denali had been the last person known to be with Cece,
30:52she was brought in for questioning.
30:54They wanted to know,
30:56where did you go hiking?
30:57Was there anyone there?
30:58What happened?
30:59And what police find is a terrified Denali,
31:02who is finally ready to tell a harrowing story.
31:14Denali told the police that she and Cece and Caden
31:20went for a walk in the woods.
31:23Caden said, let's tie each other up and take photos.
31:27He had duct tape in his pocket just by chance.
31:31She said, I had this plan of taking these funny photos or prank photos.
31:37They were going to be bound with duct tape.
31:40They said, Cece, you want to go first?
31:44And, of course, she wanted to do what they wanted her to do.
31:47So she said, yes.
31:49And when they duct taped her hands and her ankles and her mouth,
31:54she started to panic.
31:56Once she starts freaking out, they take the tape off of Cece's mouth.
32:01And she's so upset, she starts saying, I'm going to call the cops.
32:03I'm going to say, you guys kidnapped me, assaulted me.
32:07Whatever it is I need to say to make this stop.
32:10Caden starts freaking out because Cece is saying she's going to call the cops.
32:15Denali did have a handgun with her, but was part of her bad girl image.
32:22And at that point, according to Denali,
32:26Caden rips the gun out of her hands and shoots Cece.
32:32She falls to the ground.
32:34Caden then pushes her body off of this steep edge into the water.
32:39Denali now has just watched her best friend be murdered in front of her.
32:45And this friend of hers is now armed.
32:48Denali was scared.
32:49She thought he was going to shoot her next.
32:53This had escalated so quickly to the point of murder.
32:57She doesn't know what to do except to keep Caden happy so that he doesn't do the same to her.
33:04They went back down to the vehicle and he told her to text Cece's parents on Cece's phone
33:12and tell them that she had been dropped off somewhere, acting like she had no idea what happened to Cece.
33:19And then they burned some clothes, burned Cece's purse, got rid of her phone.
33:24News of an arrest in this terrible crime spreads through Anchorage like wildfire.
33:2916-year-old Caden McIntosh is under arrest, charged in Cynthia's death.
33:36Her father attended McIntosh's arraignment this afternoon, hoping to block his bail.
33:41This is Cynthia. My daughter was an angel. She was daddy's girl.
33:45Caden claims he doesn't remember much, but he admits to pulling the trigger.
33:49Caden shot her and just kicked her right into the river like she was nothing, like she was a piece of meat.
34:01I hope he rots in hell.
34:04In the days that follow, Denali appears traumatized by the tragedy of what happened at Thunderbird Falls that afternoon.
34:11Denali and Cece had both been victims of Caden. Denali had survived a horrible scene.
34:19But for those who follow her on social media, her behavior starts to tell a very different story from the one she told police.
34:26When I found out about the Snapchat post, I was like, what the F is going on? You know, like, what, what is this?
34:39I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
34:43Two days after they arrest Caden, a social media contact of Denali's reached out to police and informed them of this video.
34:59I'm sorry.
35:01I didn't mean to do it. I didn't mean to do it.
35:05In the video, Denali is seen wearing the same clothes she was wearing when she was interviewed on the 3rd.
35:11And she seems to be admitting guilt to something.
35:14I didn't mean to do it.
35:19Police brought Denali in for questioning once again.
35:22And the story overall was the same.
35:25But because this video had been posted on social media, that allowed them to get a search warrant to check Denali's phone.
35:32And once they searched her phone, they see unbelievably horrific pictures of Cece when she was murdered.
35:39And Denali had taken those pictures and sent them to Tyler.
35:47After investigators found these horrible images, they wanted to know who Tyler was.
35:51So they asked Denali and she explained that that's her boyfriend. They met online. His name is Tyler. He lives in Kansas. And he's a multimillionaire.
35:59Denali did sexual favors for him online. And Denali kept doing riskier and riskier things for Tyler because he paid her very well. And she fell in love with him. And then she told the police everything.
36:17Denali tells investigators that for Tyler, the ultimate thrill isn't online fantasy. It's real life violence.
36:27Three weeks before the murder, Tyler had actually made a proposal. If Denali Bremer would be willing to murder someone and send him photographic evidence, he was going to send her $9 million.
36:40For a teenager in Anchorage, that's a ticket to a whole new life. The biggest issue Denali had was that she didn't know who to kill. Fast forward a couple weeks and she and Cece have their huge fight about Zach.
36:55And that's when Tyler recommends that Cece should be the victim. She's emotional. She's angry. And Denali agrees.
37:03Once Denali decides on Cece as her murder victim, she knows just who to call to make certain the deed gets done.
37:11Kayden and Caleb. They spend weeks plotting the murder.
37:16The roles were Kayden went with Denali to Thunderbird Falls and Caleb let them borrow his vehicle and help them plot what they were going to do.
37:27They purposely took her to Thunderbird Falls. They knew the area and they knew that they were taking her back there to murder her.
37:35They knew that the duct tape was part of the murder plot, not a photo shoot.
37:39After they took the duct tape off her mouth, she started screaming and Denali pulled the gun and she told Kayden to shoot her in the back of the head.
37:57I couldn't shake the fact that Denali was the mastermind between all of this.
38:01Even when Kayden was the one that shot the gun, it was still under Denali's instructions.
38:06Don't be fooled by their age. They knew what they were doing.
38:10They knew exactly what they were doing.
38:12Cynthia just wanted to fit in. She just wanted to have friends and Denali was showing her a lot of attention.
38:19That's how she got suckered in.
38:22I think Denali's a horrible person.
38:26You know, to befriend somebody, to kill them.
38:30She wanted money.
38:31That is not a juvenile crime.
38:34That's an adult crime.
38:36It was sickening.
38:40As shocking as the details of CeCe's murder are, it's Denali who receives the biggest surprise of all.
38:47Now that he's part of this murder, police start looking into Tyler and they learn that Tyler doesn't exist.
38:53Tyler is actually 21-year-old Darren Schumiller who lives in his grandparents' basement in Indiana.
39:02And he is not a multimillionaire.
39:04She was being catfished by Tyler and actually when they showed her a photo of the real Darren, which did not look like Tyler, she just tore it up.
39:13She was not pleased to say the least.
39:17Three days after Cynthia Hoffman's body is found, 18-year-old Denali Bremer is arrested for her murder.
39:23It takes almost five years, but in early 2024, Denali Bremer pleads guilty to murder.
39:34And Darren Schumiller pleads guilty to the solicitation of murder of Cynthia Hoffman.
39:40Both are sentenced to 99 years in prison.
39:43When we went to federal court for sentencing, Denali was trying to make herself, well, I'm not that bad of a person, but she is.
39:53I spoke to the judge directly and pushed for the maximum sentence.
39:57There is no death penalty up here, so they got the max. 99 years.
40:03Six months later, Caleb Leland is sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder.
40:10Caden McIntosh still awaits sentencing.
40:17Cynthia was someone good, someone amazing, someone who knew right from wrong, someone who knew how to love.
40:28She was literally my life support for the longest time.
40:34Denali has hurt more people than she could ever realize.
40:38She took my best friend.
40:41We lost two wonderful people.
40:45I just feel like Cynthia wanted Dad home.
40:49I'm just my brother.
40:52I miss Cynthia.
40:53I miss Cynthia.
40:55But it does bring a lot of peace to know they're together now.
40:57On the next Mean Girl Murders.
40:58We go to church together.
40:59It was good girl versus bad girl.
41:00The good girl never wins.
41:01It was good girl versus bad girl.
41:03The good girl never wins.
41:04It was good girl versus bad girl.
41:05I'm just my brother.
41:06I miss my brother.
41:07I miss Cynthia.
41:08I miss Cynthia.
41:09I miss Cynthia.
41:10But it does bring a lot of peace to know they're together now.
41:13On the next Mean Girl Murders.
41:14On the next Mean Girl Murders.
41:16We go to church together.
41:17It was good girl versus bad girl.
41:18The good girl never wins.
41:19She was the queen scorpion.
41:20Girl on girl crime can be very, very cruel.
41:21Nobody saw it coming.
41:22I think absolutely the devil has a hand in this crime.
