01:07the president of the boston red sox that is brought to you by shaw's at star market perfecting the art
01:13fresh and by findmassmoney.gov good morning sam morning guys thanks so much for uh for being on
01:23site it's best two days of the year really is and so grateful for everything you guys are doing for
01:29dana farver and the jimmy fund just um awesome awesome work by by you and all the listeners and
01:35thanks it's a it's a great thing we all got to do our part here over the next 48 hours
01:40well we were just talking with bill o'brien he was talking about growing up here and and uh i know
01:46i know you did and and uh experiencing the jimmy fund and and what they do with dana farber
01:53uh for years and i i it's it's incredible to me it's got to be sam uh one of the if not the uh oldest
02:03long-standing relationships between a charity and a and a professional sports franchise i would have to
02:10believe it yeah it's remarkable this will um this will be our 72nd anniversary this year between the
02:17red sox and the jimmy fund it's just amazing um almost as old as you and me greg 72 years incredible
02:24but it goes way back everybody knows really um became um a thing back in the ted williams and
02:33johnny pesky era dom dimaggio just going all the way back and the way that our players have gotten
02:39behind it and our fans it's it's remarkable um i think we've we've raised the organization
02:46um and our and our fans over the last seven decades you know nearly 175 million dollars for
02:53cancer research it is the foundation of everything we do here and um it's great here in the dog days
03:01of summer the baseball calendar to take a step back and really prioritize what matters and i want
03:07to thank uh garrett whitlock he's our jimmy fund captain this year he's done a great job it's his
03:12third year doing this um and of course brock holt and tom karen who work day to day with uh with lisa
03:19and the team over there it's a personal thing for so many of us and i heard billy o'brien talking about
03:25the the personal impact this horrific disease has affected everyone uh everyone listening all of us
03:33and um and you know i'm no different and it's it's um it's just awful and we're going to find a cure
03:41and and these donations really really really do matter so um i i know uh the amazing rob hale has a
03:49challenge out there he's so generous and incredible so thanks thanks rob let's uh let's give until it
03:56hurts as they say uh over the next two days well on to what's going on on the on the field which is
04:02behind us this morning and um i'm sure you were as frustrated as we were uh with yesterday's outcome
04:09i um i mean it's tough to be uh i guess full frustration mode because this team uh in in august
04:17has struggled in the past but um seem to be i don't know if it's chemistry or what it is but but seem to
04:24be uh winning series here are you uh first of all your your thoughts on yesterday and then kind of where
04:31you stand on on this team as uh as as as it goes here into august with 30 37 left
04:37yeah yesterday was brutal and you know one that you know we we really needed to have we should have
04:44had it was um it was frustrating um but to your point you have to yeah you gotta gotta turn the page
04:51and just think about what really matters this time of year that's that's winning series so
04:56we take the series win you know we move on tonight we got this odd two game series with baltimore and
05:02then um eight on the road uh against the aoe's opponents so um like you said 37 to go we're we're
05:10we're the division is still what we want that's our goal we're five games back at toronto um we've got
05:17another shot at them late in september so we really want to climb back uh into the division things they
05:24get get back to a couple games back before we head north of the border and let's see if we can
05:29let's see if we can win the division that's that's the goal here because um you really you don't like
05:34to take your chances in the wild card um if if that's where you end up great um but we really we
05:40have not given up on winning that american league east title we think we can do it i know i know alex
05:45cora um said said uh over the weekend i think that he was being want to be very careful with with
05:52chapman but is that not a not a game i mean through four pitches the day before only four pitches is
05:58that not a game where you you would want to be able to use him well it was frustrating that he had to go
06:05in the day before and you know it's it's managing the bullpen is probably the hardest hardest thing to
06:10do uh from uh from from alex's perspective so um you know he he made the the right decision for
06:17for that moment uh because only he and chappy and the medical staff and everybody know like
06:24how he's feeling at that moment but man does it reinforce the importance of having um a reliable
06:31lockdown bullpen when you need them and we've got these two guys at the back end of the bullpen who
06:37have been that and it's been it's been chapman and whitlock and um alex has done a great job using
06:43them but it was frustrating that that he wasn't available yesterday i know it was frustrating for
06:47alex sam i don't know how much you can say on this but all reports overnight are pointing to the red
06:53sox finalizing a deal with nathaniel low and uh reports are that if you get it done he could be in
06:58the lineup as soon as today tonight um can you can you say anything about this uh i cannot but um i i know
07:07the guys uh i was actually with brez and alec last night and they are continuing to work on ways to
07:13improve the team exploring all opportunities so we'll uh we'll we'll leave it at that but keep our
07:19fingers crossed sam like like all of us fans here we look at the schedule you talked about it you got
07:25a couple games um with toronto later on in september how do you make sure that your team is not looking
07:32past baltimore and looking towards the yankees to try to be able to put distance if you can win
07:38that series how do you make sure that those young players on the field are not doing what a lot of us
07:43are doing and kind of looking down the road looking looking at the schedule
07:48yeah it's a it's a it's a good question because you've got to stay in the moment and it's just such a
07:56grind so it's really incumbent upon alex and tech and huddy and ramon and the whole coaching staff
08:04to just keep keep these guys in the moment it's what they've been doing all year we've got great
08:09mix of veteran leadership and um and and young guys who are who are mature beyond their years but
08:15you can't get too far ahead of yourself you just have to go with the old baseball cliche taking it day
08:21by day that's what these guys have been doing it's been a it's been a great season um total grind
08:27there's been a lot of ups and downs um we've been playing a lot better as everybody knows in the
08:33second half it's been amazing to see this team playing well at fenway i mean that's been so
08:38important this year to have this dominant record uh at fenway and using it as a as an advantage the
08:45ballpark has just been absolutely jammed the last couple weeks and we appreciate that we need that
08:50competitive advantage uh at home it's it's really important sam rob manford last night um put out a
08:58test balloon maybe per se uh about a potential realignment in major league baseball with the
09:04the new deal and the cba that'll be coming up in a couple years he had for the listeners who missed
09:08this red sox yankees mets phillies and nationals in a division which would be awesome can you speak to
09:16that is this just something that's theorized or is this something that could actually come to
09:20fruition in the next couple years i think it's something that could actually come to fruition
09:25and i in a rare moment curtis i agree with you wholeheartedly um it would be awesome it would be
09:33awesome um and i'm i'm very very i'm for all these um changes and innovations that major league baseball
09:43is trying to make to continue to make our our sport even more interesting more compelling you know whether
09:50it's the pitch clock or the bigger bases or getting rid of the shift um if you look at what baseball
09:55has done the the game is so much more enjoyable for our fans it's just not even close to what it was
10:04five six seven years ago and i think if you could create um geographic alignment and can have
10:12more um rivalries with teams that are that are closer it would it would help a lot with travel
10:19you know with the red sauce we travel as much as anybody probably only the mariners travel more
10:24miles than we do so we would absolutely love that and we'll be wide open to it and i did see rob it was
10:31fun to see him there with the little leaguers last night that was an awesome awesome experience and i'm glad
10:37baseball is doing that speaking of rare rare baseball lead for me this morning sam and it was
10:42about alex bregman and a report that the yankees intend to uh swoop in and and uh and steal him away
10:51from the boston red sox uh is is that a guy that this team would like to have here for a long time
10:58and um if so why not uh spend what it takes and get a get a deal done with him now well he's um yeah
11:08the short answer is uh well if the yankees are are making a play for alex bregman right now that'd be
11:13really interesting because that's definitely against the rules so maybe you can help us investigate
11:18that but um look he's um he we made a a three-year deal with alex and everybody knows his contractual
11:28status and he's handled it beyond perfect um you know look he and his family uh i think are enjoying
11:36it here we we we absolutely love having him here his he's been everything that um you could hope for
11:42and more he suffered a tough injury has come back for that he's been an amazing leader he's a great
11:49guy and most importantly a great baseball player so yeah he's a he's a guy we we want to have here and
11:56and um appreciate all he's doing and as he said you know we'll we'll deal with all that at the right
12:01time but he is focused right now on on the final 37 all right sam well thanks for taking the time this
12:08morning and we'll look forward to i know you'll be here a lot over the next 24 48 hours so um uh we
12:16are excited to see where we end up this year when it comes to the radio telethon well i also um greg if
12:23i could i it's not often that uh i make good investment decisions and i'm able to double my money quickly
12:30so um behalf of my amazing wife amanda and our family we'd love to give ten thousand dollars and have
12:36double that so thank you thanks so much for i mean it's this disease has touched our family and
12:44like everybody's um out there and we we're thinking of tim wakefield this morning and and so many um
12:52people who are who have suffered from this awful awful disease so i want to thank rob he's he's an
12:57amazing amazing person in this region we're so lucky to have him and grateful but thanks to all your
13:04generous uh listeners most importantly you guys do so much good and we really appreciate it so thanks
13:09and yeah we'll see you later today all right sam that's awesome thanks uh to you guys for that so
13:14all right sam kennedy president of the boston right sucks um and that's another 10 000 so uh we're up to
