00:00Hey, what up? I'm Josh Martinez.
00:02I'm Z100, New York's No. 1 hit music station
00:04and the Superstar Crossover on iHeartRadio.
00:07I mean, he's basically a friend of the show at this point.
00:09I am.
00:10Tony Khan, what's up, man?
00:11Hey, thank you, Josh. You're a friend of AEW.
00:13I really appreciate you having me on the show.
00:15It's great to see you, and it's great to be on the show
00:18with you talking about AEW.
00:20We've got Wednesday Night Dynamite
00:22coming up this Wednesday, 8 p.m.
00:24on TBS, live at 8.
00:27Also, you can stream it live on HBO Max.
00:30We're on every Wednesday, HBO Max and TBS.
00:33Also coming up Saturday,
00:35it's going to be AEW Collision on TNT and HBO Max.
00:40We do every Wednesday on TBS and every Saturday on TNT,
00:43and now the shows are simulcast on HBO Max,
00:45and you have been around AEW for many, many years,
00:49since long before we did this simulcast.
00:52You've been an AEW supporter,
00:54but we're making all kinds of new fans,
00:56and AEW's having a really great year now in 2025.
01:00So thank you for having me in the studio to talk about the shows.
01:03Of course, man.
01:04So how important has the transition to the live streaming on Max been
01:08to the AEW brand as a whole on a global scale?
01:12It's a great question.
01:12It's been a really great year.
01:14It's been the best of both worlds,
01:16because we still have the great audience on cable every Wednesday on TBS,
01:21every Saturday on TNT,
01:22but we've grown so much because we're also simulcasting.
01:27We're reaching a new audience.
01:28A lot of young fans and fans who've cut the cord,
01:32people of all ages,
01:33are using streaming and HBO Max is a top streaming service
01:36with, I think,
01:37the very best content,
01:38the best shows and movies,
01:40and we're on the sports page for AEW,
01:43and AEW,
01:45we're the best wrestle,
01:46we have the best wrestling,
01:47and our TV shows are on HBO Max now,
01:50in addition to being on these channels
01:52that have such a great history of pro wrestling.
01:54A lot of people that are listening
01:56know there's a great history of wrestling
01:58on TBS and TNT,
02:00and AEW,
02:01we've been able to bring that back.
02:02So this Wednesday,
02:04you can check out the show.
02:05We were having a really successful year
02:07with the ratings,
02:08the audience,
02:09AEW is doing really well,
02:11and the shows have been really fun.
02:13So you can catch AEW this Wednesday at 8 p.m.
02:17You can catch Collision this Saturday at 8 p.m.,
02:21but also,
02:22like you said,
02:22it's been really important to have the simulcast
02:24because there's a lot of fans,
02:26as media is transitioning,
02:28that are exclusively streaming
02:31or spending a lot of their time
02:32watching streaming compared to cable
02:34because, like I said,
02:35a great history of wrestling on TBS and TNT,
02:39but growing up,
02:40those were kind of the best options
02:42to watch wrestling.
02:43Now there's so many options for media,
02:45and a lot of people are watching streaming,
02:47so being on a great streamer like HBO Max,
02:50it's huge for AEW,
02:52and that's one of the reasons
02:53we're having such a great year this year in 2025.
02:56And November 22nd,
02:58you guys are coming back to Newark.
03:00I believe it's like the third year in a row
03:02that Full Gear will be at the Prudential Center?
03:04Third time in four years.
03:05Okay, third time in four years, okay.
03:07And we're 2022, 2024,
03:09and we're back for 2025.
03:11It's one of the best and biggest AEW shows every year.
03:15I think it's one of the most consistently great shows
03:18every year,
03:19and this has been maybe the most consistently great AEW year,
03:22so I think that bodes really well for Full Gear,
03:26which is coming November 22nd back here in this market.
03:29It'll be in Newark at the Prudential Center
03:31where the Devils play.
03:33It's a great venue.
03:34It's hosted AEW Full Gear and great shows before.
03:38It's where we had our first-ever Dynamite on TBS,
03:41and I came and saw you then.
03:43Yep.
03:44And we've had a lot of great shows there over the years,
03:46and the tickets go on sale soon.
03:48It's right around the corner.
03:49It's actually the day after the Forbidden Door pay-per-view.
03:52The pay-per-view's coming up.
03:53You can order it on Sunday, August 24th.
03:56It's going to be an afternoon show,
03:58Sunday afternoon, August 24th.
04:01My last Sunday afternoon pay-per-view for a while
04:04with football starting up.
04:05That's right.
04:06I get very busy then,
04:08but it will be tickets on sale for Full Gear here
04:13Monday, August 25th.
04:15You can sign up early for the pre-sale,
04:17but Monday, August 25th,
04:19the tickets go on sale,
04:20and there's going to be great demand for the seats.
04:24It's going to be a packed house.
04:25I love coming here.
04:26I'm sure I'll see you again closer to the show
04:28around the Thanksgiving holiday
04:30when I do that media rounds,
04:32but it's going to be an exciting time.
04:34We also have a lot of great shows coming up
04:36around Philadelphia in the 2300 Arena,
04:39formerly known as the ECW Arena,
04:41when I was a kid.
04:42Actually, it'll be the first time I've set foot
04:45in the ECW Arena,
04:47now known as the 2300 Arena,
04:50in Philadelphia,
04:51since I was 13 years old with my dad in 1996.
04:56So it's been, at this point,
04:58actually, it was 29 years ago this past week
05:01was the last time I was in there.
05:03So it's going to be great to go in there
05:04over 29 years later for several shows.
05:07If you're going to be in Philadelphia
05:09or around Philadelphia,
05:11check out AEW in Philly,
05:13and August 25th, you can buy your tickets
05:15or any time after that
05:16for the November 22nd AEW Full Gear Pay-Per-View,
05:20and definitely check out the shows this week
05:22because AEW's having a hot run of great shows
05:25for AEW Dynamite Wednesday at 8 p.m.,
05:29TBS and HBO Max,
05:30and AEW Collision Saturday, TNT and HBO Max.
05:33So you guys recently have been setting
05:35kind of year-over-year highs
05:38with the ratings on Dynamite.
05:41What do you contribute that recent success to?
05:44I think it's a combination.
05:46A lot of things have to come together,
05:48and the environment for AEW is really great right now,
05:50and I think it's most of all due to a combination
05:53of the wrestlers are really delivering.
05:56We've got a great group of wrestlers.
05:58AEW's where the best wrestle.
06:00We have the best wrestlers,
06:01and we have a fantastic staff
06:03and great fans watching the shows every week.
06:05It's really helped having this great roster,
06:08and the stars have aligned really well.
06:11I think it's been great timing to have MJF back
06:14coming off the success of Happy Gilmore 2,
06:17and he filmed the movie.
06:20He came back.
06:20He's been very active and involved,
06:22and that's been fantastic.
06:24And this year, Kenny Omega also returned,
06:27had a great run as the AEW International Champion
06:30in some fantastic matches before his comeback story
06:34was derailed in the epic match at AEW All-In Texas
06:37with Kazuchika Okada,
06:39who unified the International and Continental Championships.
06:43And certainly, Jon Moxley's reign
06:46as the AEW World Champion was fantastic
06:49before he was derailed by Hangman Page.
06:53Really, things could have gone either way
06:54between Hangman Page and Will Ospreay
06:56at Double or Nothing, which was a fantastic show.
06:59Hangman Page came out on top
07:01in the Owen Hart Foundation tournament final,
07:03got the shot at Mox,
07:05and after months and months and months,
07:07the better part of a year of Mox reigning on top,
07:10holding the championship hostage,
07:12dominating everybody,
07:13and Mox holding the title in a briefcase,
07:16which really, in the end, accomplished,
07:18in many ways, everything Mox set out to do.
07:20It made AEW a greater, better company,
07:22and it made the heroes of the company band together
07:25and fight even against each other
07:26to prove who was the best,
07:28sharpening each other,
07:29until one man rose up and took down Mox,
07:32which was Hangman Page, the new world champion.
07:36It's always great.
07:37The greatest heels are the ones
07:39that are telling you the truth,
07:40that are telling you what's going to happen,
07:42but you just don't want to accept it.
07:44And sure enough, to your point,
07:45everything Moxley said since winning the AEW title,
07:49since putting it in the briefcase,
07:50and I got to give you guys credit,
07:52the little nuance and details
07:53of leaving the Danielson side plates
07:57on the titles to show Moxley took it from him,
07:59put it in the briefcase,
08:00and literally never opened it,
08:02never showed it for all those months later
08:04as champions.
08:06I think you guys deserve a lot of credit
08:07for that entire storyline.
08:09As a fan, sometimes we were left questioning things,
08:12and I will say, I think fans get very impatient.
08:15We have an idea, you go the opposite direction,
08:18and now, oh, we hate it, right?
08:19And then we're going to go on Twitter,
08:20and we're going to complain about it.
08:21We hate it.
08:22But you guys did a fantastic job.
08:25Was Hangman kind of the end goal the entire time,
08:30or was it we're literally going to see
08:32who does rise up amongst this core group
08:35of young talent that we have?
08:37I think I had key ideas,
08:39and even looking back to when you saw
08:41there was a group of challengers
08:42that took on Mox,
08:43Hangman was in a totally different place.
08:45We were up here doing shows
08:47at the Hammerstein Ballroom
08:49after Full Gear last year
08:51and had a great series of events
08:53around the holidays,
08:54and Hangman Page going into World's End
08:57was one of the challengers
08:58who came up and battled Jon Moxley
09:01going into the big four-way match.
09:02We had so many great wrestlers
09:04step up along the way.
09:06Darby Allin,
09:07who's now just recently returned
09:09from Mount Everest,
09:10climbed Mount Everest,
09:11first wrestler ever to do that
09:13and plant the AEW flag.
09:15And Darby Allin,
09:16Orange Cassidy,
09:17Jay White,
09:18who we love in AEW,
09:19he's been out injured.
09:20He's somebody that would very much
09:21be in the AEW plans.
09:23Jay White being out injured,
09:25that, you know,
09:26of course changed things,
09:27but he was one of the people
09:29that was after Mox right away.
09:31And then, of course,
09:33Hangman back then,
09:35and Hangman took a long journey
09:37to find himself
09:38and rise up
09:40and become a hero again
09:41after he took a dark path.
09:43And then we saw
09:43these great challengers
09:44like the rated-R superstar
09:46Adam Copeland,
09:47Swerve Strickland,
09:48who got derailed
09:48when the Young Bucks
09:49made a return to AEW.
09:51And then Hangman and Will Ospreay
09:53had to battle
09:54to see who would go on
09:56to go to All-In Texas
09:57and have that huge opportunity
09:59to go in front of the biggest crowd
10:01AEW's ever had.
10:03And it was this year
10:03at Globe Life Field in Texas.
10:05It was, I think,
10:06our best show ever.
10:07Hangman Page took the world title.
10:09Hangman Page was the one
10:10who stepped up
10:11and was the right answer.
10:12So there was this vision
10:14from the beginning.
10:16Jon Moxley,
10:17the great AEW star,
10:19Bryan Danielson's best friend.
10:20After Bryan won the title,
10:22finally,
10:23he was living on borrowed time.
10:25We knew Bryan Danielson
10:26was very injured,
10:27but he overcame everything
10:28for his family.
10:29And it meant a lot to me
10:31as somebody who loves wrestling
10:32and loves Bryan Danielson
10:33very much.
10:34First as a fan,
10:35going back many years,
10:36and then working with him
10:38as a friend
10:40and working together
10:41and as his boss.
10:42I love Bryan,
10:44and I think he's one
10:44of the greatest wrestling stars ever
10:46and one of the best humans
10:47I've known.
10:48And it meant a lot.
10:50He's very selfless.
10:51He wouldn't have been the person
10:51to ask ever for a moment like that.
10:54He never would have asked
10:55to be a champion
10:56or have the show
10:57built around a moment for him.
10:59But to have a great world champion
11:01like Swerve Strickland,
11:02who had beaten so many top stars
11:04along the way
11:05like Samoa Joe,
11:06Christian Cage,
11:07and Will Ospreay,
11:08of course,
11:09at Forbidden Door last year.
11:11And then to have
11:12Swerve Strickland's great reign
11:15end by Bryan Danielson
11:17overcoming everything
11:18and, like I said,
11:20living on borrowed time
11:21pulled off what to him
11:22he said is the biggest
11:24and best win of his career
11:25to have the best moment
11:26he ever had
11:27to win the AEW world title
11:28finally after all those
11:29close calls,
11:30including up here
11:31against Hangman
11:32in the same building
11:34we're going to be
11:35in the Prudential Center.
11:37And to have Bryan Danielson
11:39finally win the world title,
11:40that was like
11:40a really amazing thing.
11:42And then to have it
11:43completely ripped away
11:44from him
11:44and betrayed so violently
11:46by his best friend
11:47Jon Moxley.
11:48Jon Moxley,
11:49the most beloved
11:50fan favorite,
11:51the most hardworking hero
11:53from day one of AEW,
11:56arguably the top fan favorite
11:58hero from day one,
11:59to have him become
12:02such a dark villain
12:02and to do something
12:04unheard of
12:04to betray Bryan
12:05and then take such
12:08a dark path
12:08with the Death Riders
12:09and kind of the zombie
12:13of what had been
12:13the BCC.
12:15Yep.
12:16And then to have
12:17Bryan Danielson
12:18go out the way he did,
12:20it was really great,
12:21but then it made it
12:22all that much sweeter
12:23when Bryan Danielson
12:24returned as part of the group
12:25along with Darby
12:26to help make sure
12:27the Death Riders
12:28did not stop
12:29Jon Moxley
12:30from capturing
12:31just, excuse me,
12:34to stop Hangman Page
12:35from stopping Jon Moxley
12:36and to stop Hangman Page
12:38from capturing the title
12:39as he did.
12:40I thought it was
12:41one of the greatest
12:42days in AEW's history
12:45and I definitely think
12:45it was our best
12:46pay-per-view show ever
12:47and so many things
12:48contributed to it.
12:50There was all these
12:50great matches
12:51and the Women's World
12:53Championship match,
12:54that's also been
12:54and a huge part
12:55of, I think,
12:57really the TV
12:59and the pay-per-view
13:01popularity
13:01and then to have
13:03the great champions
13:04collide at AEW
13:06All-In Texas,
13:07to have the AEW
13:08Women's World Champion
13:09Timeless Tony Storm
13:10wrestle the TBS champion
13:13Mercedes Monet.
13:14I think they're two
13:15of the best wrestlers
13:16in the world
13:17and I certainly think
13:18they are the two best women
13:19in the world of wrestling
13:20and they had
13:21one of the greatest
13:22matches ever in AEW
13:23on probably the greatest
13:25AEW show ever
13:26on the biggest stage
13:27for us ever
13:28in this continent
13:29and that was fantastic.
13:32Both of them
13:32have been a huge part
13:33of AEW
13:34over the past
13:35couple of years.
13:37Definitely,
13:38I would say,
13:39looking back,
13:41Timeless Tony Storm
13:42is one of our
13:43very biggest stars,
13:44somebody who came
13:45to AEW
13:45and has been reinvented,
13:47reinvigorated,
13:48and is doing the best
13:49work of her career
13:50and I think
13:50Mercedes Monet
13:51is one of our
13:51biggest free agent
13:52signings ever.
13:53That was a great match.
13:55Both of them
13:55are a huge part
13:56of the popularity also.
13:59So we're having
13:59a great year
14:00and I think there's
14:00a lot of contributing
14:01factors
14:02and the men and women
14:04wrestling
14:05and also,
14:06like I said,
14:07we have this great staff
14:08that's been doing
14:09a great job this year.
14:10It's really hard
14:11with pro wrestling.
14:12It's great
14:12because we have
14:13such great fans.
14:14It's 52 weeks a year.
14:15It's the only sport
14:16that goes year-round
14:17and to have a staff
14:18that travels year-round
14:20and works no off-season.
14:22They really do it
14:23because they love wrestling
14:24and we have a lot of fun
14:27and I think this is
14:28the most fun
14:28we've had
14:29maybe ever,
14:31certainly since
14:32Daily's Place,
14:33since we were all
14:33doing the shows there
14:34and I think it's coming
14:35across this year.
14:37It feels like we're
14:37having a fun show.
14:39I mean,
14:39even when there was
14:40a rumor that there
14:41was this rumor
14:42of this MVP
14:44not playing well
14:45with others
14:46over the last couple days,
14:47specifically with speedball,
14:49but then the next day
14:49they turn around
14:50and make a video
14:51for social media
14:52where they curse each other out
14:53in a clear,
14:54playful manner,
14:54I think that also shows
14:55kind of the growth
14:57of what people
14:58might perceive
14:59AEW to have been
15:00back in the day,
15:02whether it was issues
15:03that did leak over
15:04into real life
15:05and play out
15:06in front of us
15:07in real life
15:07with the various performers.
15:09What would you say
15:10right now
15:11is like the biggest
15:12misconception of AEW?
15:14I think the stories
15:15in AEW
15:16have been
15:17as strong as ever.
15:18The wrestling,
15:19people will say
15:19AEW is great.
15:20I think a lot of people
15:21would concede
15:22the action in wrestling,
15:24the athletic action
15:25is absolutely fantastic.
15:26Everyone agrees
15:27and also,
15:28if you haven't seen
15:28the show lately
15:29or if you're just listening
15:30to a false narrative
15:32and you can tell me
15:35honestly whether you agree
15:36with this or not, Josh,
15:37I think the stories
15:37in AEW
15:38have been fantastic
15:38this year
15:39and we've been talking
15:40a long time
15:41about some of the great
15:42stories in AEW
15:42and you even just said
15:43how fantastic you thought
15:45some of the storytelling
15:46around Jon Moxley's
15:47World Championship reign
15:49has been.
15:49People even question
15:50that aspect of it
15:52and I think that was
15:52proven right
15:53but then certainly
15:54whether you love them
15:55or not,
15:56nobody can question
15:56there's a lot of
15:57storytelling in AEW.
15:58I think it's fantastic
15:59and a lot of the fans
16:00who actually pay attention
16:02to it think it's great
16:02but there will be people,
16:04tell me if you agree
16:05with this or not,
16:06there's people that would
16:07say
16:08that there's a lack
16:10and I don't agree
16:11with this,
16:11I think it's untrue
16:12of stories in AEW.
16:14I don't think that's true
16:15at all
16:15and it's really
16:16I think
16:16not only a misconception
16:18but a falsehood
16:20that people spread.
16:20I think the biggest thing
16:21for me as a fan
16:22is that
16:23whatever time
16:24that I invest
16:25in what I'm watching
16:26I want to get it back
16:28in some sort of
16:29a legitimate payback.
16:31Like I want
16:31this story to be paid off,
16:33I want this first
16:33and it doesn't have
16:34to be like
16:35I'm of the mindset
16:35where like
16:36it doesn't have
16:36to be a happy ending
16:37all the time.
16:38I just like my payoffs
16:39and I think that
16:40this initial success
16:42of AEW
16:43like we needed
16:45wrestling fans
16:45needed all elite wrestling
16:46at the time
16:47especially at the time
16:48when WWE was arguably
16:50in one of the biggest
16:51creative ruts
16:52they ever were in
16:53at that time
16:53when you guys launched
16:54and you guys came out
16:56and said hey
16:56we want to be
16:57an alternative
16:57to wrestling fans.
16:59This is what we want.
17:00What's the mindset now
17:03finishing 2025 and beyond
17:05you guys have been
17:05established for several
17:06years now
17:07as the number two
17:08company in the country
17:10arguably on a global
17:11scale as well
17:12I would say globally
17:13to be quite honest
17:14you guys
17:16okay
17:17you could also be
17:18an alternate
17:18but why can't you
17:19be the primary?
17:20So what's your mindset
17:21moving forward
17:22for AEW and beyond?
17:23I think we've had
17:24a great year
17:25and I want to focus
17:26on AEW
17:27and how we can
17:28make the shows
17:29great every week
17:30and we're just
17:31always going
17:32from one great show
17:33to the next
17:33but also trying
17:34to always set up
17:34things for the future
17:35shows
17:36from Dynamite
17:37on Wednesday
17:38to the next Wednesday
17:39on Dynamite
17:40but also to
17:40Saturday on Collision
17:41or from Saturday
17:42on Collision
17:43to Wednesday
17:43on Dynamite
17:44or from
17:45Saturday to Saturday
17:47whatever we have to do
17:48and certainly
17:49from pay-per-view
17:49to pay-per-view
17:50and the TV
17:50set up the pay-per-views
17:52having great matches
17:53and great rivalries
17:54that build
17:55to the next
17:55rivalry and match
17:57I think that's
17:58really been a focus
17:59but also the wrestlers
18:00have really delivered
18:01the team is clicking
18:03it's a lot like
18:04a sports team
18:05and it is a sport
18:06and even though
18:07they're fighting
18:07each other
18:08it is certainly
18:10a great collaboration
18:11to put out
18:11a great wrestling show
18:13together from start
18:13to finish
18:14and we've been doing
18:14that week after week
18:16throughout the year
18:17batting such a high
18:19average Wednesdays
18:20on Dynamite
18:21on TBS
18:22and HBO Max
18:23and Saturdays
18:24on TNT
18:25and HBO Max
18:26on Collision
18:26the shows
18:27have just been
18:28consistently great
18:29the fans
18:29are very happy
18:30with AEW
18:31that's I think
18:32why there's been
18:32the growth
18:33but it takes
18:33a team
18:34it takes the wrestlers
18:35doing really well
18:36the staff
18:36putting on
18:38everything it takes
18:39to do a wrestling show
18:40which is a huge
18:41team effort
18:41with hundreds of people
18:42working together
18:43to put these shows
18:44on every week
18:44that air
18:46not only
18:46having a really successful
18:48year here in the US
18:48but in England
18:50our ratings have grown
18:51we've built
18:52great partnerships
18:53overseas
18:54and we're on
18:54in 150 countries now
18:56and pay-per-views
18:57are now available
18:58on Amazon Prime
18:59which I noticed that
19:00and I was like
19:01this is so much easier
19:02than finding
19:03all these other apps
19:04because I'm constantly
19:04on Prime Video
19:06I should say
19:06so that was huge
19:08yeah
19:08and Amazon Prime
19:09will be carrying
19:10of course
19:11Forbidden Door
19:12coming up Sunday
19:13August 24th
19:14Sunday afternoon
19:14thank you
19:15and that'll be great
19:17and then the next day
19:17up here the tickets
19:18go on sale
19:19Monday August 25th
19:20or you can sign up
19:21early to get the tickets
19:22for full gear
19:23which is coming
19:24November 22nd
19:25back here
19:26in this area
19:27in Newark
19:28for your listeners
19:29and continuing
19:30the great tradition
19:31of AEW shows
19:32not only in the market
19:33but in that building
19:34the Prudential Center
19:34so I'm a diehard
19:36wrestling fan
19:36we know that
19:37you're also a diehard
19:37wrestling fan
19:38you grew up
19:38a diehard wrestling fan
19:39so I look at you
19:40and I'm like
19:41you know what
19:41I'm gonna talk to him
19:42fan to fan
19:43real quick
19:43right
19:43and I have a little bit
19:45of a complaint
19:45for you
19:46just a little one
19:47alright
19:47so you guys
19:49have a deal
19:50with Dave & Buster's
19:50right
19:51so pay-per-views
19:52are at Dave & Buster's
19:53that's dope
19:54it's like a pull up
19:54eat a pretzel stick
19:55have a few beers
19:56with the guys
19:56life is good
19:57but when
19:59when your pay-per-views
20:00go past midnight
20:01and Dave & Buster's
20:02kicks us out
20:02not the best
20:04that's my
20:05that's my minor complaint
20:06for now
20:07that is
20:07unforeseen
20:09and it's a great thought
20:10and I really appreciate
20:11your insight
20:12and I will
20:12and thank you
20:14because it's the first time
20:15anybody's ever brought that up
20:16and I think it's a good thought
20:17but here's my
20:18silver lining
20:20first of all
20:20the next pay-per-view
20:21nobody's going to have
20:22that issue here
20:23because
20:24Forbidden Door
20:25August 24th
20:27is Sunday afternoon
20:28love it
20:28AEW All in Texas
20:30best show we ever did
20:30it was just a few
20:31weeks past
20:32July 12th
20:34all six hours
20:34I was sat in my living room
20:36chilling
20:36no problem
20:37had you been at Dave & Buster's
20:38it was an afternoon show
20:39so everybody got
20:40that whole show
20:41so these afternoon shows
20:43they've been good for that
20:44so that buys some time
20:45to readdress that
20:46think of that over
20:47but it's fair
20:47it's a good thought
20:48you know
20:49because I think
20:50if you were out
20:51when we did
20:52Double or Nothing
20:53on the West Coast
20:54we were in Phoenix
20:55so the night was young for us
20:56you know
20:57and the crowd was
20:57the hottest they were all night
20:59when we've done some of these
20:59West Coast shows
21:00and Double or Nothing
21:01historically
21:03many of them
21:04most of them
21:04have been on the West Coast
21:05either in Las Vegas
21:07or Phoenix
21:07out West
21:08so
21:09it's early out there
21:11the fans are rowdy
21:12and then usually
21:12later in the night
21:13they get hotter
21:14and hotter
21:14the drinks are flowing
21:17the fun continues
21:18so
21:19that's fair
21:21you know
21:21out here on the East Coast
21:22here in New York
21:23and all across America
21:24and particularly
21:25in this eastern time zone
21:27that's fair enough
21:28I hadn't really thought about that
21:30you're the first person
21:31ever to say it
21:31so thank you Josh
21:32and as I'm planning
21:34AEW events
21:34I'll definitely consider that sir
21:36so obviously
21:37you own
21:38you run a business
21:39AEW is a business
21:40but you're also a fan
21:41at heart
21:41is there
21:43is there one person
21:45that's been able to like
21:46help you out
21:48with the booking
21:48and the creative
21:49to the point where
21:50you have the confidence
21:51to say okay
21:52I'm looking at this
21:53from a fan perspective
21:54I gotta do the business
21:55side of things
21:56this person's gonna help me
21:57do that
21:57well I do
21:58I work with a group
22:00of people
22:00consistently
22:01there's been a flow
22:02of different people
22:03there's not one
22:04continuous person
22:05that's ever been there
22:06the whole time with me
22:07you know
22:08I have a great group
22:09of people in the office
22:10that help with things
22:11week to week
22:12people do different things
22:15I have a great group
22:17of people
22:17that are contributing
22:20this year's been really
22:22a very good thing
22:22I've tried to get back
22:23to more of a philosophy
22:24of Daily's Place
22:26where I put the whole
22:28outline together
22:28basically myself
22:29of what I want to do
22:30week to week
22:31going in
22:32instead of having a meeting
22:33and saying okay
22:33let's all
22:34you know
22:34I run a meeting
22:35and let's all
22:36pitch ideas for the outline
22:37and I think that's been good
22:38and you let me know
22:41if you would agree with this
22:41it seems like it's been
22:42very positively received
22:43that people like
22:44going back to that model
22:45and they liked it before
22:47when I did it that way
22:48it seemed like it was
22:49very positively received
22:50at the beginning of 2020
22:52going into the original revolution
22:53when I said okay
22:54maybe I should just
22:55you know
22:57instead of having
22:5727 people
23:00tell me what they think
23:01before I put the outline together
23:02maybe I should put
23:03the outline together
23:03and then come in
23:04and say okay
23:0427 people
23:05what do you think
23:05of this outline
23:06I think this looks
23:06pretty good
23:07I think I'm going to go
23:09with this
23:09unless somebody has
23:09and then if somebody
23:11does have a thought
23:12okay maybe I still have time
23:13and I do take
23:14a lot of
23:16feedback
23:18from different people
23:19but I think it's important
23:21that I come in
23:22with my
23:23one vision
23:26which I think
23:26has been a really
23:27positive thing
23:27in 2025
23:28just like it was
23:29in 2020
23:29and then into 2021
23:31which were really
23:32well received
23:33in AEW
23:33where I came in
23:34with one vision
23:35of what I want
23:35and that was
23:38really well received
23:39and then along the way
23:40I think it's been
23:42very collaborative
23:42and it's certainly
23:43I am very collaborative
23:44especially with the top stars
23:46and the greatest wrestlers
23:47in the world
23:47but
23:48I can't put it all
23:51to one person
23:52I do think the person
23:53that is accountable
23:54for this at the end
23:55of the day
23:55is me
23:55so what
23:57I have to take
23:58responsibility for it
23:59so that's how I see it
24:00and that's why
24:02I'm so happy
24:03that it's going
24:03very well
24:04and this has been
24:05the best year
24:05I've certainly
24:06always been responsible
24:07but
24:08I
24:10told myself
24:12at Christmas
24:14of this year
24:15I was up here
24:15for the Hammerstein
24:16Ballroom
24:16and
24:18I kind of had
24:19the same
24:20pep talk
24:20with myself
24:21at the end
24:21of 2024
24:22that I did
24:23at the end
24:23of 2019
24:24and it's yielded
24:25the same positive results
24:26five years later
24:27exactly
24:28that it did
24:29in 2025
24:29just like 2020
24:30where I said
24:31okay
24:32it's a lot of meetings
24:34and there's a lot of people
24:34pitching me stuff
24:35and then I put the outline
24:36together
24:36and I think I'm biased
24:37and I'm hearing too many
24:38voices in my head
24:39and really I should
24:40put the outline together
24:41and just like it was
24:43very well received
24:44the original revolution
24:45came off very well
24:46this year
24:46started out very good
24:48on TV
24:48great year
24:49TBS, TNT, HBO Max
24:51for AEW
24:52but also the pay-per-views
24:53yes they've been great
24:54for years
24:55we've been doing
24:56great pay-per-views
24:57and I've always
24:57had that vision
24:58for pay-per-views
24:59and what I want to do
25:00month to month to month
25:01that has never changed
25:03but there's so many TV shows
25:05and you can take so many ideas
25:06into account
25:06in putting a TV show together
25:08but I have to be
25:08completely responsible
25:09for the TV show
25:10instead of letting
25:11a lot of people
25:11tell me what the show
25:12should be
25:13and then I try to decide
25:14who I want to listen to
25:15or I'll just
25:15I'll decide what the show
25:16should be
25:17and then we're having
25:18I think the best year
25:19in a long time
25:20doing it that way
25:22because
25:22instead of just coming in
25:24and saying like
25:25okay I want to
25:26do the pay-per-views
25:28and that's what this is
25:29going to be
25:30from this month
25:31to the next month
25:32and from this month
25:32to the next month
25:33and having a big vision
25:34and then saying okay
25:34from this show
25:35to the TV show
25:36we can do a lot of things here
25:37let's what do you
25:38you know
25:38and taking all the ideas
25:40into account
25:41better just to
25:43take a pen and paper
25:44and put the TV shows
25:45and then come in
25:46and say okay
25:46this is what the TV shows
25:48are actually going to be too
25:49because that's how important
25:50the TV shows are now
25:51it's really important
25:52to look
25:52because the economics
25:54of wrestling
25:54because we grew up
25:55as wrestling fans
25:56and have spent most
25:57of our lives
25:57both you and I
25:58watching pro wrestling
25:59the economics
26:00of the business
26:01have changed
26:01and it's actually
26:02what brought me
26:03into the wrestling business
26:03in the first place
26:04truthfully
26:05in addition to being a fan
26:06is I realized
26:07that now there's
26:08a business model
26:09that would work
26:09to launch
26:10at the wrestling promotion
26:10that became AEW
26:12because now the TV rights
26:14are the lifeblood
26:15of a wrestling promotion
26:16the pay-per-view
26:17is a huge tentpole thing
26:19and they're still
26:20the biggest events
26:21individually
26:22but overall
26:25the TV
26:26is the lifeblood
26:27of the promotion
26:28it's what pays
26:29the bills
26:29it's what has led
26:31to great salaries
26:32for pro wrestlers
26:33on top
26:34the people who earn
26:34the big wages
26:35and are the top stars
26:37in the promotions
26:38and primarily
26:39you know
26:40I would say
26:41the vast majority
26:43of the money
26:43that's earned
26:43in pro wrestling
26:44is earned
26:46either in AEW
26:47or WWE
26:48or internationally
26:49domestically
26:50it's primarily
26:51those two promotions
26:51though
26:52and the top stars
26:55are doing great
26:55and it's because
26:56the TV rights
26:57are so great
26:57and what really helped us
27:00like I said
27:00we've been doing great
27:01on TBS and TNT
27:02we renewed
27:03we got a bigger deal
27:04for TBS and TNT
27:05but also adding
27:06HBO Max
27:08and having these shows
27:10that are on TV
27:10and streaming
27:11every week
27:11it's huge
27:12and it's a lot of work
27:14putting 104 shows together
27:15two shows a week
27:16but I like doing it
27:18and I feel like
27:21I you know
27:21I never stopped doing it
27:23I never stopped
27:23being accountable for it
27:25but I guess
27:27and I still have
27:29all the same people
27:30I kept all the same people
27:31it's not like I'm saying
27:32I want to get rid of people
27:33or take people's jobs
27:34I just feel like
27:35I should put the outline
27:36and decide what it is
27:37and then I'll have people
27:38come in
27:38and I'll hear an idea out
27:40or an idea
27:40about how you can
27:41add something
27:41or add a promo
27:44or spice something up
27:46or a contribution
27:48or if somebody sees something
27:49that maybe I should look at
27:51a different way
27:52I'm happy to hear people out
27:53but I'd rather do that
27:54after I've already
27:55made up my mind
27:56what the
27:57outline of the format
28:02is going to look like
28:03and when you do
28:03104 shows a year
28:0552 dynamites on Wednesdays
28:06and 52 collisions
28:08mostly on Saturdays
28:09sometimes time shifted
28:10for sports
28:11but yeah
28:12it's 104 formats
28:13but I really like doing it
28:14Josh
28:15and you know
28:16now wrestling
28:16that TV show
28:18is so important
28:18even though the pay-per-views
28:19are still bigger
28:21and I think better than ever
28:22and that's a huge part
28:23of AEW
28:24and what we do
28:25it's a huge part
28:27doing these TVs every week
28:28and that's why I'm so proud
28:29we're consistently
28:30delivering great shows
28:31so you talked about
28:33like the business model
28:34of wrestling
28:35being the most successful
28:36it's ever been
28:37WWE recently
28:39shifted into
28:40two night
28:40PLEs
28:41Wrestle Kingdom
28:42was two nights
28:44at one point
28:44as well
28:45I don't know
28:45if they did it this year
28:47I can't remember
28:47but I know at one point
28:48they did Wrestle Kingdom
28:49in fact they were
28:50the original
28:51big event
28:52two night
28:53gimmick
28:53if you will
28:54and then Wrestlemania
28:55I believe followed suit
28:562021
28:57or 2020 rather
28:59have you guys
29:00considered
29:01the idea
29:02of a two night
29:03event
29:04specifically
29:05a pay-per-view event
29:06I know you guys
29:06did the back-to-back
29:07weekends
29:08a year ago
29:10with All Out
29:11and
29:11sorry for forgetting
29:14All In All Out
29:15oh it's All In All Out
29:15yeah we did All In All Out
29:16we did Wembley in Chicago
29:18that was great
29:19okay so that was
29:20a week apart
29:20those were two great events
29:21those are two of our best shows
29:22so yeah I mean
29:23it can be done
29:24I think it's
29:25nice having the cadence
29:27I mean we're doing great this year
29:28so I do like what we're doing
29:29but there's
29:30there's merits to it too
29:31and the
29:32the scale
29:33I mean you know
29:33frankly when people do
29:34those two nights
29:35to open up the books
29:37for a wrestling company
29:38whether it's doing those
29:39or a residency
29:40like the ones we've done
29:41in Chicago
29:41or the one coming up
29:42for anyone in Philly
29:43coming up soon
29:44in the upcoming weeks
29:45those save a lot of money
29:46I mean it's
29:48hundreds of thousands
29:49if not millions of dollars
29:50in set up teardown costs
29:52and that you can put that
29:53into the wrestling promotion
29:54into the marketing
29:55into the wrestlers
29:56into the hopefully profitability
29:58which is great
29:59now with AEW
29:59having the new media rights
30:02we are really
30:03a much healthier
30:04stronger business
30:05our revenues are much higher
30:06than ever
30:06and it's really exciting
30:07because we're a young
30:08growing company
30:09that continues to grow
30:09the revenues every year
30:11and we've done so well
30:13but certainly
30:14when you do like
30:15residencies like that
30:16or anything that involves
30:17staying in the same place
30:18you do save a lot of money
30:19that's one of the nice things too
30:20and definitely
30:23I think that's a good question
30:24but I think
30:25we're doing things great
30:26with AEW in 2025
30:27we've had some great events
30:30we've opened up
30:30some new places
30:31also had two of the
30:33biggest episodes ever
30:34and most biggest audiences
30:37of the past year
30:38have been
30:38you know
30:39Collision had a top episode
30:41for Grand Slam Australia
30:43our first ever event
30:44in Australia
30:45and then Dynamite
30:46had our biggest audience
30:48of the past year
30:49and this isn't even
30:51including people
30:51on HBO Max
30:52just on TBS
30:53the biggest in the last year
30:54not including
30:55the streaming fans
30:56you know
30:58we've had
30:59for Grand Slam Mexico
31:01which is one of the
31:02greatest things
31:02we ever did
31:03we went to CMLL
31:05we went to Arena Mexico
31:06their home
31:07and in Mexico City
31:09we brought
31:09some of the greatest stars
31:11of Lucha Libre
31:12and I think we made
31:13a lot of new fans
31:14and that is
31:15one of the biggest
31:16Dynamite shows ever
31:17so we've been able
31:18to go to new countries
31:19it was our first show
31:19ever in Australia
31:20and it was our first show
31:22ever in Mexico
31:23and I think that's
31:25something we can continue
31:26going to those countries
31:27and also reaching out
31:28to new countries
31:28and expanding AEW
31:30so like we described before
31:32you're a diehard wrestling fan
31:33I just want to pick
31:34your brain a little bit
31:35kind of rapid fire style
31:36if possible
31:38sure
31:38do you remember
31:40what would you say
31:41as a fan
31:42was like your favorite
31:42heel turn of all time
31:44or at least maybe
31:47the most memorable
31:48because maybe you love
31:49the wrestler
31:49and
31:50I definitely
31:54think
31:56for me
31:57and it's a great
31:58great question
31:59and I'm thinking
32:02about it
32:02because there's
32:03so many good ones
32:03and I don't want
32:04to leave out
32:06because
32:08there's a lot of
32:10ways you could go
32:11with this
32:11and mind you
32:14this is just a person
32:15I was
32:15okay so I was a kid
32:16so it's just
32:17if it's really
32:17just a personal thing
32:18I was a big fan
32:20of obviously
32:21everyone knows
32:21Sting
32:22and Ric Flair
32:23and when I was
32:2612 years old
32:27I guess I would have
32:28just turned
32:28it was right after
32:29my 13th birthday
32:30so I just turned
32:3113
32:32when Ric Flair
32:35turned on
32:36Sting
32:36and formed a new
32:37horseman
32:38with Brian Pillman
32:40and Arne Anderson
32:40and they turned on
32:42Sting at Halloween Havoc
32:43I was
32:44I just turned 13
32:45and I was like
32:46so excited
32:48about that
32:50it was really
32:50really cool
32:51and I loved
32:53Ric Flair
32:54and you know
32:55I was happy
32:57to see Ric Flair
32:57and Sting
32:58as a team
32:58but I really
32:59wanted to see
32:59Ric Flair
33:00be a bad guy
33:01I wanted to see
33:01Ric Flair
33:02be a villain
33:02be a heel
33:03be the evil guy
33:05he was
33:05back then
33:06on TBS
33:07and TNT
33:08so I loved
33:10when Ric Flair
33:13turned on Sting
33:14I thought that
33:15was really cool
33:16any one wrestler
33:17dead or alive
33:18at their prime
33:20you can sign
33:21them to AEW
33:22who comes to mind
33:24and bear in mind
33:28by the way
33:28that was a personal
33:29that was just my
33:30you said my favorite
33:30when I was like
33:31so I'm not saying
33:32there's so many
33:34classic ones
33:34that was just
33:35the thing I loved
33:36that I watched
33:36back then
33:37like I said
33:38we brought wrestling
33:38back to TBS
33:39and TNT
33:40this is the fan
33:41Tony Khan
33:41that we're talking to
33:42I didn't mean to say
33:42that's the greatest
33:43it's just a thing
33:44when I was a kid
33:45when I was a kid
33:46watching wrestling
33:47that was the most
33:48excited I ever got
33:49because I wanted
33:50to see Ric Flair
33:51be a villain again
33:52even though I was
33:53enjoying seeing him
33:53with Sting
33:54that's what I really
33:54wanted to see
33:55was Ric Flair
33:55like that
33:56with the horsemen
33:57sorry sorry
33:58so sorry
33:58no it's all good
33:59you were asking me
34:00sorry
34:00prime
34:01dead or alive
34:02any wrestler
34:03to sign at AEW
34:04video game style
34:07Steve Austin
34:08so we're talking
34:11late 90s
34:12stone cold
34:12if you get
34:13Steve Austin
34:13in the 90s
34:14and just have
34:15Steve Austin
34:15for the decade
34:16of the 90s
34:16he's the greatest
34:17he's a great
34:18human
34:18I love Steve Austin
34:19he was very nice
34:21to me
34:21haven't seen him
34:22in a long time
34:23he was very kind
34:24to have me on his
34:24show after the
34:25original double or
34:26nothing
34:26and I am
34:28one of the biggest
34:30fans of his
34:31and I think Steve
34:31Austin's the biggest
34:32wrestling star of all
34:33time
34:34and certainly
34:35if you could pick
34:36any era of person
34:37and just if you had
34:38Steve Austin with you
34:39throughout the 90s
34:40even though his
34:42persona evolved from
34:43stunning Steve
34:44to superstar Steve
34:45to the ringmaster
34:46to stone cold
34:47Steve Austin
34:47he's one of the
34:48greatest wrestlers
34:48of all time
34:49and if I had ever
34:51been fortunate enough
34:52to work with any
34:53iteration of Steve
34:54Austin particularly
34:54in the 90s or early
34:572000s I would count
34:58myself very fortunate
34:59I'm very fortunate
35:01and consider myself
35:01very lucky for many
35:03reasons but also
35:03lucky just to have
35:04met Steve Austin
35:06and had a nice
35:07chat with him
35:07he actually was very
35:09positive about the
35:11original double or
35:12nothing I did his
35:12show after the first
35:14double or nothing
35:15in 2019 over six
35:16years ago and he
35:17was incredibly
35:18positive about the
35:19show and I think
35:21he's the greatest
35:22wrestling star of
35:23all time
35:23so when it comes
35:25to being a fan
35:27I admit two
35:29wrestling moments
35:30actually made me
35:31cry right in my
35:32lifetime as a fan
35:33before you got
35:35into AEW before
35:36AEW was ever
35:37invented because now
35:37you have like these
35:38personal connections
35:39with performers so
35:40taking AEW out of
35:41the equation
35:41completely have you
35:43ever cried during
35:44for a wrestling
35:45angle or a match
35:46I it was not a
35:55wrestling angle it
35:56was matches I
35:58never have cried
35:59for even in the
36:00moments of joy
36:01because the
36:01greatest moments of
36:02joy would be
36:03Sting's
36:05Sting's retirement
36:09match would be
36:10if I could pick two
36:11moments of joy and
36:12then the two
36:13moments because
36:13there's two times I
36:14did cry from
36:15wrestling but not
36:16from anything that
36:17really was because of
36:19the wrestling part of
36:20it but the two
36:22greatest ones would
36:23be Sting's retirement
36:24match at Revolution
36:262024 Sting and Darby
36:27Allen versus the
36:28Young Bucks maybe the
36:29greatest tag team
36:30wrestling match ever
36:31certainly I think the
36:32greatest retirement
36:33match ever
36:34Sting undefeated in
36:36AEW you can watch
36:37his whole career
36:38basically now on
36:39HBO Max he had the
36:41greatest retirement
36:42run ever start to
36:43finish from Revolution
36:4421 to Revolution
36:4624 he wrestled for us
36:47three years he
36:48debuted arrived at
36:50Winter is Coming 2020
36:51on Dynamite in
36:53December of 2020 then
36:54had his first match
36:56at Revolution 2021
36:58and wrestled then for
36:59three years he went
37:00undefeated I think it
37:01was 29 and 0 in
37:03AEW and and he had a
37:05match in Japan also
37:07teaming with Darby for
37:08the Great Muda's final
37:09match there with them
37:11and I have to say
37:13that's maybe my finest
37:15day and it set every
37:16business record in
37:18Greensboro North Carolina
37:19and one of our biggest
37:21events ever the biggest
37:22revolution ever and one
37:24of our biggest shows
37:25ever and my favorite
37:26thing ever to be able to
37:26give Sting the kind of
37:27retirement match
37:28platform he deserved
37:30and then for him and
37:31Darby Allen and the
37:32Young Bucks to have that
37:33kind of a great match
37:34for the great fans and
37:36the environment everyone
37:36just delivered that was
37:37awesome that was one of
37:38the best nights but I
37:39did not cry from that
37:41but that's as happy as I
37:42ever came I didn't just
37:43didn't cry I don't cry
37:44from joy as much and I
37:45very rarely do cry but
37:48that was a great moment
37:51and then the other one
37:52would be Brian Danielson's
37:54retirement match like I
37:55said at Wembley Stadium
37:56all in last year and
37:57again I didn't cry from
37:58that but I was just so
37:58happy overwhelmed I'll
38:00tell you what as a dad
38:01watching Danielson perform
38:03in front of his kids and
38:03his kids are on camera and
38:04you guys kept you know
38:05kind of panning over and
38:06stuff and you could see
38:07them in the foreground
38:08three years ago I would
38:10have been like oh that's
38:10cute that's a nice touch
38:12now as a dad to a near
38:13two-year-old girl seeing
38:15like this little girl look
38:16at her dad as he
38:17performs and stuff like
38:18yeah that was one of the
38:19matches for me that I
38:21definitely cried bro I'm
38:22not gonna lie yeah it was
38:23incredible and that's one
38:24of the great moments for
38:26me uh and I didn't
38:27necessarily cry from those
38:28I don't really cry from
38:29joy I that's just
38:30personal different people
38:32react but to me the two
38:33times I did cry that were
38:34related to wrestling when
38:35we lost Mr. Brody Lee and
38:37Jay Briscoe and uh had
38:40matches that paid tribute
38:42to both of them uh and
38:44their great contributions to
38:46wrestling uh Jay Briscoe
38:48primarily in Ring of Honor
38:49and that's where I worked
38:50with them and then Mr.
38:51Brody Lee and AEW and
38:52especially all exclusively in
38:55Daly's place all of his
38:56stuff was in the pandemic
38:57uh that that and the stuff
38:59we did at QT Marshall
39:00school QT Marshall great
39:02person who's been in our
39:03AEW office for many years
39:04and and his school we
39:06hosted the wrestling
39:07matches in uh Atlanta and
39:11that was for we did a whole
39:13month of TV there uh in the
39:15lockdown and we also other
39:16than that one month uh we
39:18did almost a year and a
39:20half of consecutive shows in
39:21Jacksonville and that's
39:23where we were based for the
39:24vast majority Jacksonville
39:25of the lockdown and all
39:27Brody Lee's matches were
39:29then and uh the unfortunate
39:31passing of Brody Lee and
39:34Jay Briscoe those had
39:36nothing to do with wrestling
39:37in either case they just
39:38both were totally different
39:39trip tragic circumstances but
39:41those are the only times I
39:42really remember crying and
39:44wrestling and and but not
39:46from anything that was
39:47because of the wrestling
39:47part of it so trying to end
39:49things on a happier note
39:51um if you needed to have an
39:53AEW mascot what would you
39:56make it would it be an
39:58animal it would be a Jaguar
39:59it'd be the Jaguar it'd be
40:01an AEW variation on the
