00:00Before the storm came, me and my cousin, we ride our bikes through the Trumet area.

00:09It never crossed my mind. That would be my last bike ride in my community.

00:19Hurricane Katrina is now a category five storm.

00:23They've built the levee system now to withstand a category three.

00:30I woke up. My neighborhood had 20 feet of water.

00:39I put my first granddaughter on the roof, turned around to get her two sisters,

00:44and she fell into the water and disappeared.

00:49We survived Katrina. When them levees broke, that's what led us in.

00:56The government's levees failed, and they left us. And to say that clear, they left us.

01:07Federal, state, and local officials just were completely unprepared for something they knew

01:11was going to happen. We predicted that people would be trapped in their homes.

01:16I couldn't leave. 20,000 people showed up at the Superdome.

01:21We didn't have any food, any water. The governor said that she's on our national guard to shoot,

01:27to kill if somebody's looting. I'm not sure if you call that looting. I call that survival.

01:32The American people only knew what they saw on television.

01:36TV news loves a crime story more than anything else. We were treated as criminals. Why are these

01:44people holding us against our will in here? You can look and see that this was racial.

01:52Is anybody going to come help us? We're part of a culture that we want a hero. There's no

01:57blueprint for 80% of a major city being underwater. There's no blueprint for that.

02:0020 years later, the is still real. 20 years to life, the time should fit the crime. Human

02:09lives cut down and out, left in waters to rot. 20 years to life, and my stomach still holds a knot.
