00:20:40I mean it.
00:20:44What?
00:20:48I have your promise that...
00:20:51Sure.
00:21:03Mike, send the boys in.
00:21:10He won't do it.
00:21:14He's just trying to protect Clark.
00:21:16Do you think he'll cross you?
00:21:17Sure, in a minute.
00:21:20Who else do you know that's close to the state team?
00:21:22Wait a minute, let me think.
00:21:24There was a young guy down here once who got in bed with a girl.
00:21:27Can you get him?
00:21:29Sure. This guy's in the bag.
00:21:33All right, if you get him, give me a ring at the hotel, will you?
00:21:36Oh, I'll have him down here in a half hour.
00:21:40Hello, Slip.
00:21:46Hello, Mac.
00:21:49Can I see the game?
00:21:50Yeah.
00:21:51Any objections?
00:21:53Who's gonna win?
00:21:54University.
00:21:58What'll your kid brother say to that?
00:22:00Let him remember me
00:22:07As I used to be
00:22:12When his love for me
00:22:17Made him strong and free

00:23:33Oh, what a day, what a day, what a day.
00:23:35Great football weather.
00:23:37Hold, clear, nippy.

00:23:46Must be a window open somewhere.
00:23:47Would you pardon me while I shut it?
00:23:49Ha, ha, ha, well, I got it down.
00:23:53I tell you, that state cheering section is positively a sensation, fellas.
00:24:02They're all dressed in red and white.
00:24:04The men are wearing short coats and long pants, and the women are wearing...
00:24:07Long coats and short coats.
00:24:08Long coats and short...
00:24:09Out of 70,000 seats in this place, you've got to pick this one.
00:24:14I tell you, Johnny, I like you.
00:24:16Well, don't let it ripen into love.
00:24:18Pardon the interruption, folks, but Jack Dempsey just came in to say hello.
00:24:22Sit right down, Jack.
00:24:23Stay as long as you like.
00:24:27What number's Clark?
00:24:28Number two.

00:24:31All right.
00:24:35Well, there go the two captains to meet the referee in the center of the field.
00:24:38Captain Shook, state's big center, and Captain Southern University's crack halfback.
00:24:42University.
00:24:43Okay.
00:24:44We'll defend that gold.
00:24:45Okay, boys.

00:25:53Clawson forced him out of bounds.

00:25:55He made a yard and a half.

00:32:06Sorry, kid.
00:32:08It's all right, Wally.
00:32:09I'm not a footballer you learned last night at Othello's.
00:32:14Why don't you learn to mind your own business?
00:32:16Hi, fellas.
00:32:17Tight down.
00:32:17Here comes the old man.
00:32:23Well, gentlemen.
00:32:27It took you just five, six of the first half to start playing football.
00:32:33Now, for that time, I thought you were a debating team.
00:32:37But with conferences and arguments and time out.
00:32:41And you, Connors.
00:32:44Don't you think university opposition enough without making our men take you out of place, too?
00:32:49Yes, sir.
00:32:51The hardest man we had to get by out there was you.
00:32:54Pick up your feet and move a little.
00:32:58Talking about opposition.
00:33:02I'm Kenny himself, couldn't have called our place better for university.
00:33:05I've got so much to say and so little time to say it.
00:33:10I'll put it all in these few words.
00:33:12Interfere for Clark.
00:33:15Block for Clark.
00:33:17And above all, give the ball to Clark.
00:33:21You'll see that, Griffith.
00:33:24I'm putting you in a quarter.
00:33:25You've just been listening to Governor Thompson, ladies and gentlemen, upon graduating state and himself.
00:33:34Quite a football player in his day.
00:33:38University team is already on the field.
00:33:41The second half is about to begin.
00:33:42Oh, boy.
00:33:43It's much colder up here now.
00:33:45Bad day for us all through.
00:33:46I'm about to cut it.
00:33:47I'm sorry you're not in there, kid.
00:33:54No more.
00:34:04University comes out of his huddle.
00:34:06The ball is snapped to Jogerson.
00:34:09There goes Clark.
00:34:10Back to receive.
00:34:10Oh, boy, did he hit him.
00:34:24That man, Souther, has been tackling after Demon all day long.
00:34:2743.
00:34:28That Clark takes it fast.
00:34:29Way deep.
00:34:29Let's go.
00:34:32Look.
00:34:34Okay, Walter.
00:34:36Signals.
00:34:38Change signals.

00:34:3924.
00:34:40Let's go.
00:34:57Hello, hello.
00:34:59Looks like somebody's hurt.
00:35:01Yep, there goes the state trainer out in the field.
00:35:03It's Griffith.
00:35:04They're taking him out.
00:35:05Oh.
00:35:05Bugger.
00:35:06Can you snap out of that trance long enough to call one play?
00:35:09Yes, sir.
00:35:1121.
00:35:12And give the ball to Clark.
00:35:14Get out there.
00:35:17Go, go, go.
00:35:19Bugger.
00:35:22Fight.
00:35:25Fight.
00:35:26One, two, three, four, five, two, three.
00:35:34There goes Tony Clark.
00:35:35He's in it clear.
00:35:42There's something wrong.
00:35:44Clark is slowing down.
00:35:47He's at the 15-yard line.
00:35:48One more second, he'll make it.
00:35:55Well, I guess that's about all for today.
00:35:56Clark is still lying there, not moving.
00:36:04He seems to be completely out.
00:36:07Now they're carrying Clark off.
00:36:09I don't see how he was hurt.
00:36:11There was no one near him.
00:36:12Must be something serious, huh?
00:36:14Don't look kosher to me.
00:36:17We'd better get him to the hospital right away.
00:36:19You go back to the field, I'll take him.
00:36:20No, no, let me.
00:36:21I know these boys so much better.
00:36:22Doc Collins, they want you on the field.
00:36:23Walters hurt.
00:36:24Yeah.
00:36:25Why don't I go in?
00:36:26Okay.
00:36:30Sorry.
00:36:30I'm sorry, miss.
00:36:33I can't let you in.
00:36:34You've got to let me in.
00:36:35I'm his sister.
00:36:35I can't let you in, Liz.
00:36:37I can't.
00:36:37But I...
00:36:38Well, too, but there's...
00:36:40Hey!
00:36:41There you go, yeah.
00:36:43They're going on with the game, folks.
00:36:45As you know, the score is still 7-all and it's State's Ball and University's 10-yard line.
00:36:50Greenwood is now taking the place of Wally Clark.
00:36:52Can't you send someone in to see how he is?
00:36:56No, miss.
00:36:57I'm sorry.
00:36:57I'll have to ask you to wait in the reception room.
00:37:10Oh, nurse.
00:37:11How is he?
00:37:12Dr. Kyle's on his way for consultation.
00:37:14We can't tell him to them.
00:37:16I'm sorry.
00:37:18Lucille, State Law 13-7.
00:37:20Isn't that a handy?
00:37:21Shh!
00:37:22Oh, you just take it easy, sister.
00:37:40Everything's liable to be all right.
00:37:49Oh, this wanky.
00:37:51Why isn't it?
00:37:54Oh, doctor.
00:37:55Just a minute.
00:38:00Well, what does it look like?
00:38:03No one knows.
00:38:04We've never run close anything like it before.
00:38:07You mind if I take a look?
00:38:09No.
00:38:10You'll come back and tell me, won't you?
00:38:12You better.
00:38:13You better.
00:38:26Swell bunch of MDs you are.
00:38:28Here he is dying.
00:38:29You don't even know what's the matter with him.
00:38:31Well, it looks like apoplexy.
00:38:34Apoplexy?
00:38:34You ain't a football player?
00:38:35Certainly a heart collapse of some sort.
00:38:38Where have they got Wally Clark?
00:38:40In the receiving room.
00:38:44Well, come in, Collins.
00:38:46This is the team doctor, Mr. McKenna.
00:38:47You examined Clark just before the game, didn't you?
00:38:50Yes.
00:38:50How was his heart?
00:38:51All right.
00:38:52Ever have any trouble with it?
00:38:53Not in the three years I've known him.
00:38:55That knocks your heart gag in a cocked hat.
00:38:57Doesn't make sense.
00:38:58Some of these cases don't.
00:38:59Well, there's some sense to this one.
00:39:00That's what I'm here to find out about.
00:39:06Dorothy.
00:39:07Oh, Buck.
00:39:07How's Wally?
00:39:08They don't know.
00:39:09Where is he?
00:39:10Over there.
00:39:10Well, I'd better go.
00:39:11Not for a moment.
00:39:13Oh, it's been awful waiting here like this.
00:39:15Hold me tight.
00:39:17Everything should happen to him.
00:39:18I don't know what I...
00:39:18Listen, darling.
00:39:20Everything's going to be all right.
00:39:22It's got to be.
00:39:35He's gone.
00:39:37Well, you gentlemen have done all right so far.
00:39:48Now I'm going to take a hand.
00:39:50How?
00:39:50I'm ordering an autopsy right away.
00:39:52Why?
00:39:53You said he died of unnatural causes.
00:39:54That's where I come in.
00:39:56Mr. McKenna, I wouldn't be too hasty, please.
00:39:59You see, we have the school to consider.
00:40:01There's no use letting ourselves in for unnecessary publicity.
00:40:05You are in for it.
00:40:06You and the school both.
00:40:07And plenty of rising from the newspapers, too.
00:40:0970,000 people saw this kid drop, and they'll be wanting to know what dropped him.
00:40:13You better start thinking up your answers right now.
00:40:15Give me the coroner.
00:40:28Never mind about your dinner.
00:40:29Get right over here.
00:40:30I've got an autopsy I want you to rush through.
00:40:32Looks like a murder.
00:40:33Look.
00:40:42What's that?
00:40:52Looks like someone crawling around.
00:40:54Maybe that's the guy that did it.
00:40:55Let's go.
00:41:00Yeah.
00:41:01What's that?
00:41:03The coroner.
00:41:08Explosion of the brain.
00:41:10Well, what's that?
00:41:11And why?
00:41:12I see.
00:41:15In other words, you don't know either.
00:41:17You're almost as good as those doctors.
00:41:19All right, that's enough for me to go, and I'll call you back.
00:41:24Well, that wraps it up, boys.
00:41:26Clark was murdered.
00:41:29This is going to cause an awful smell.
00:41:31Mm-hmm.
00:41:33What are those boys of yours down here the first thing in the morning?
00:41:35Yours, too, Kennedy.
00:41:36We're all set to leave on the tenant's lap train tonight.
00:41:38I'm sorry.
00:41:39The boys like to stick around another day.
00:41:42Thanks, Jim.
00:41:43Any word from you on Buckingham yet?
00:41:44Nope.
00:41:45Keep on it.
00:41:48What's that?
00:41:49Maybe they got somebody.
00:41:52Hey, chick.
00:41:53We found a guy prowling around the stadium.
00:41:54Send him in.
00:41:55Get in, man.
00:41:56Come on.
00:41:57Yeah.
00:41:57Cut it.
00:41:58Cut it.
00:41:58Cut it out, will you?
00:42:00Hi, pal.
00:42:02Is this it?
00:42:03Yes.
00:42:03He looked like a dangerous character.
00:42:04And they shot at me.
00:42:06They missed me, but they shot at me.
00:42:08He was crawling along in his hands and knees like a cockroach.
00:42:10What?
00:42:10Who is the cockroach?
00:42:12I was only trying to find a way out.
00:42:14Out of what?
00:42:15A heavy fog?
00:42:16No, no.
00:42:17You see, I was, it seems, I was generally overcome with excitement.
00:42:21You know, the game and the, and the general hubble, hubble, hubble, hubble.
00:42:26Yeah.
00:42:27And I passed out.
00:42:29No.
00:42:29And when I opened my baby blue eyes and looked around, there was nothing there but me and the moon.
00:42:37Everybody was gone.
00:42:39Oh, I was all alone.
00:42:41Oh, Mac, you don't know what it is to be all alone in a great big stadium.
00:42:44All right, boys, leave with me.
00:42:45I'll take care of them.
00:42:46I, come on, park the body over here and sing yourself to sleep.
00:42:49No, but look, look, look what they did to my, look, I'm full of holes.
00:42:53What are you kicking about?
00:42:54Now you can wear it next summer.
00:42:56A small town of humor.
00:43:03All right for me to come in?
00:43:04Yes, come in, Colin.
00:43:05I've been waiting for you.
00:43:06I'll be at the hotel, Mr. McKenna, if you want me.
00:43:08Right.
00:43:09Good night, Mike.
00:43:10Good night, Tom.
00:43:11It's Clark's uniform.
00:43:12I brought it down from the infirmary, as you asked me to.
00:43:14Thanks.
00:43:15The headgear's in the locker room.
00:43:17The officer on guard didn't seem to want to let me go in.
00:43:19Everything's locked and sealed.
00:43:20Coroner's orders.
00:43:21Sit down.
00:43:21Colin's being close to the boys as you are.
00:43:26You've probably got a pretty good line on most of them.
00:43:28How did Clark stand?
00:43:29Oh, great, great.
00:43:31Everybody liked him, except...
00:43:33Except what?
00:43:34Nothing important.
00:43:35It might be.
00:43:37Well, I'd rather have it come from Bucken.
00:43:39Oh, come on, come on.
00:43:40This isn't a class in ethics.
00:43:42Well, Bucken got a telephone call last night from Mortello.
00:43:46It's from a man named Buchanan.
00:43:48I believe he's a notorious gambler.
00:43:50Yes, I've heard of him.
00:43:51He's Bucken's brother.
00:43:53You don't say.
00:43:57Did you bring Bucken with you?
00:43:58I've been hanging around his room all this time, but he didn't show up.
00:44:01Oh, here's something I run across in his wastebasket.
00:44:07What was in there?
00:44:08Could you tell?
00:44:13Couldn't say without analysis.
00:44:15Tastes as if it might have had Strickman there.
00:44:18Take this down and have it analyzed.
00:44:20That, too.
00:44:20Come on, come on.
00:44:22I'll be right here.
00:44:23All right, all right.
00:44:24You don't have to go selling me around.
00:44:26Hey, McKenna.
00:44:27What's the smart idea of getting me up here at this hour?
00:44:30And my big night, too.
00:44:32Where's Slip Buchanan?
00:44:33Slip Buchanan?
00:44:35Who's that?
00:44:35Now, don't give me that.
00:44:36Listen, Archelle.
00:44:37I've got enough on you to close you up.
00:44:38Now, you better answer my questions and ask them straight.
00:44:41Where's Slip?
00:44:42He left town right after the game.
00:44:45Did he collect his dough?
00:44:46As far as I know.
00:44:48What's the lowdown on this deal between Slip and his brother?
00:44:51I don't know what you're driving at.
00:44:52I don't know nothing about him.
00:44:53Now, if you don't want to make things tough yourself, you better answer my questions.
00:44:56Where's the kid now?
00:44:57He left town on the 815.
00:45:01How do you know?
00:45:02Sam, took him to the station.
00:45:04Skipped town.
00:45:07Too bad he did that.
00:45:09Did what?
00:45:10Ran out like that.
00:45:11Oh, come, fellas.
00:45:13The boy undoubtedly had a very good reason for leaving.
00:45:15Oh, I don't doubt that.
00:45:17I only say he picked a funny time to go.
00:45:19Now, I know Buckingham pretty well, and I resent your implications.
00:45:21This is no time for anybody to resent anything.
00:45:24A boy was killed, a game was lost, somebody made a cleanup.
00:45:27We don't know who did it.
00:45:29We don't know how it was done.
00:45:31It might be anybody, but we do know it was murder.
00:45:35Murder?
00:45:37Did somebody say murder?
00:45:42Hello?
00:45:43Hello, operator?
00:45:44Give the New York Star Tribune it off right away.
00:45:48Someone's been murdered.
00:45:50Who was it?
00:45:57I don't know why you didn't take me.
00:46:26I like football.
00:46:27I had business to do.
00:46:30Sometimes mixing pleasure with business is awful nice, honey.
00:46:34My business is always a pleasure.
00:46:38See what that is.
00:46:41Oh, perhaps I'd better get dressed.
00:46:46Hello, kid.
00:46:47I didn't expect to see you here.
00:46:51I'll bet you didn't.
00:46:52Well, what got you here so early?
00:46:54Look at this.
00:46:58What?
00:47:01When did this come out?
00:47:02I just got it down at the corner newsstand.
00:47:05What's it all about?
00:47:06You know what it's all about.
00:47:08You killed Clark.
00:47:09Now, hold on.
00:47:10Hold on.
00:47:10You're talking wild.
00:47:11You lied to me.
00:47:12You promised me that Walter wouldn't be hurt.
00:47:14Keep cool.
00:47:15Keep cool.
00:47:16I've got a lawyer that'll spring you within 24 hours.
00:47:19You can't get away with this.
00:47:21I'd yell my head off to the police, the newspapers, and everybody.
00:47:24I'll tell them how you propositioned.
00:47:25Now, that's about all I'll take from you.
00:47:30You're not talking to a kid now.
00:47:33Sit down.
00:47:35Sit down.
00:47:36Now, get this straight.
00:47:46I didn't kill Clark, or have him killed, or intend that he be killed.
00:47:52That's not my racket.
00:47:54He's dead, though.
00:47:56Yes, the fact is, he's dead.
00:47:59Well, that's just one of those things.
00:48:02It may have been his heart.
00:48:04Maybe he fell on his head.
00:48:05It may be lots of things, but I have nothing to do with it.
00:48:08That's what you say.
00:48:09Now, we'll just wait and see what happens.
00:48:12Now, you lay low here, and I'll help you to beat any rat that they frame against you if
00:48:17it costs me my last dime.
00:48:19Oh, it's all a stall.
00:48:20I know you.
00:48:21You're trying to cover.
00:48:22Don't you understand?
00:48:23I'm trying to help you.
00:48:25I don't want any help from you.
00:48:26I don't want any of your money.
00:48:27I was doing all right until you had to horn in again, and a swell mess you made of things,
00:48:32or for a few rotten dollars.
00:48:33But I'll get out from under alone, and you'll know what you can do with your lawyer and
00:48:36your last dime.
00:48:37Why, you ungrateful little sap.
00:48:39I've got a good mind to smack you in a jar like I used to.
00:48:42Hold it, Buchanan.
00:48:45Bucking?
00:48:46Yes.
00:48:48Come on, kid.
00:48:49We're taking you back upstate.
00:48:50There's a train leaving in 20 minutes, if you want to take it.
00:49:05Putting them under a light is a pretty old gag.
00:49:08I know that.
00:49:09It may work with these college kids.
00:49:10Just now I'm up a tree.
00:49:11Funny how small towns slow some people up.
00:49:14Oh, shut up.
00:49:15Now sit back and remember, the only reason you're here is to see they don't give me any
00:49:19bum steers on this football stuff.
00:49:21When I want you to say anything, I'll address you.
00:49:23Yes, teacher.
00:49:24Want an apple?
00:49:25Shut up.
00:49:26Send in Connors.
00:49:30Connors!
00:49:34I understand you sell liquor, Connors.
00:49:37No, sir.
00:49:38I mean, yes, sir.
00:49:39But only for minister purposes.
00:49:43You've got a good many patients around here, haven't you?
00:49:44Well, there's been a lot of sickness amongst the boys this winter.
00:49:49What were you doing at Ortella's the night before the game?
00:49:52I was down there on business.
00:49:53Business with Slip Buchanan, eh?
00:49:55Who?
00:49:55You met Slip Buchanan at Ortella's private office and they bought you.
00:49:57No, they didn't.
00:49:58They sold me.
00:49:58Sold you what?
00:49:59Four cases of rye.
00:50:01What are you getting for rye now?
00:50:04Five bucks a quart.
00:50:07Didn't Ortella make you a proposition to throw the game?
00:50:13No, sir.
00:50:14Did Ortella make a proposition to any of the boys?
00:50:16I should say not.
00:50:17They'd have torn his place down.
00:50:22When do you graduate, Connors?
00:50:24I don't know.
00:50:25The faculty don't seem to want to tell me.
00:50:28You know you hated Clark's guts.
00:50:39Sure I did.
00:50:39But I didn't kill him.
00:50:41Did you try?
00:50:43No.
00:50:44I'd have been satisfied to cripple him for life.
00:50:47Hmm.
00:50:47Nice boy.
00:50:52Why were you sent out of the game, Griffith?
00:50:54I wasn't sent out.
00:50:55I got hurt.
00:50:56Funny, you got hurt just in time to get out of the game.
00:50:58In time?
00:50:59I don't get you.
00:51:00Time to get away from Clark before he died.
00:51:02Say, you can't get away with that.
00:51:04Sit down.
00:51:04Sit down.
00:51:08Miss Dorothy Clark.
00:51:14You and young Buckin are engaged.
00:51:16Is that right?
00:51:17Well, practically.
00:51:18I wanted to announce it Saturday night at the Delta Dance, but...
00:51:23But what?
00:51:26Buck didn't seem to want me to do it.
00:51:28What reason did he give?
00:51:29I'd rather not talk about it at all.
00:51:32I've been so upset.
00:51:33Please, Miss McKenna, I'd rather not.
00:51:35I'm sorry, Miss Clark, but we've got to talk about it.
00:51:38Anything that you can tell me to throw any light on this case is important,
00:51:42no matter how unpleasant it may be for you.
00:51:44Excuse me.
00:51:45Yes?
00:51:47What?
00:51:49Oh.
00:51:50Yeah, all right.
00:51:52I'm sorry.
00:51:53Something important has just come up.
00:51:54Do you mind waiting in the next room for a few moments?
00:51:56Why, of course not.
00:52:00It shall be long.
00:52:09Send in Buckin.
00:52:10I'm disappointed in you, Buck.
00:52:18I didn't think you'd run away.
00:52:20I did not run away.
00:52:21I had to go to New York.
00:52:22What was the big rush?
00:52:22Well, I had to see somebody there.
00:52:24Slipped you down, eh?
00:52:25Well, yes.
00:52:25What'd you have to see him about?
00:52:27I'd rather not say.
00:52:28Well, I can well understand that, all right.
00:52:30You want to get your cut out of the money to help slip back on the game.
00:52:33I didn't have anything to do with the money to slip back on the game.
00:52:35Ortele says you did.
00:52:36Ortele's a liar.
00:52:37He ought to know he was in his private office where you wouldn't slip the night before the game.
00:52:40He was not.
00:52:40We were alone.
00:52:41And you admit you were there?
00:52:42Yes.
00:52:45You and Clark were pretty close friends, I understand.
00:52:48Yes, we were.
00:52:49Roommates.
00:52:50Spent your vacations together and all that sort of thing.
00:52:52Yes, his family had a hunting lodge in Canada.
00:52:54Did you ever tell him about Slip Buchanan being your brother?
00:52:57Yes.
00:52:58Oh, you did?
00:52:59When?
00:53:00The day of the game.
00:53:02Day of the game.
00:53:03It was a funny time to tell him, wasn't it?
00:53:04After knowing him all those years?
00:53:06Why didn't you tell him before?
00:53:09Why didn't you tell him before?
00:53:11Could it be that you didn't want him to know that you were the brother of a notorious gambler?
00:53:14Isn't that it?
00:53:15No, that's not it at all.
00:53:17Now look here, Buck.
00:53:18And you're shielding someone, and you're putting your own neck in a noose.
00:53:22I'm trying to help you, Mr. McKenna.
00:53:23You're not helping me.
00:53:25You were with Clark every minute, Saturday morning until the game.
00:53:27You never left his side once.
00:53:29I checked up on that.
00:53:30Now, if anyone could have gotten to him, you'd know who and how.
00:53:32And you're going to tell me how.
00:53:33I wish to God I did know how, Mr. McKenna.
00:53:35If I did, I'd send him to the chair for it.
00:53:38Okay, Bucken.
00:53:39You don't have to tell me how.
00:53:41You told me something else.
00:53:43You told me why.
00:53:47Joe, hop over to headquarters and pick up a warrant for Stanley Bucken.
00:53:51The charge is murder in the first degree.
00:53:53And if Judge Boyan is in bed, pull him out.
00:53:55I'll look in here until you get back.
00:53:56You can't do that.
00:53:59I didn't kill him.
00:54:00You did.
00:54:00You know you're trying to lie out of it.
00:54:02Everything you tell me is a lie.
00:54:03But there's one thing you overlooked.
00:54:05Did you ever see that before?
00:54:06It was found in your room and empty.
00:54:08The poison in that bottle is the stuff that killed Clark.
00:54:09That wasn't poison.
00:54:10It was only a bromide.
00:54:11Oh, Slip told you that, did he?
00:54:12He put one over on you.
00:54:14And you gave that stuff to Clark.
00:54:15I didn't give it to him.
00:54:16I poured it down the drain.
00:54:17Did anyone see you poured it down the drain?
00:54:18What reason would I have for doing a thing like that?
00:54:20Double motive.
00:54:21Money and the girl.
00:54:22Slip made you a proposition.
00:54:23You saw a chance to kill two birds with one straw.
00:54:25That's a lie.
00:54:25For years you've been trying to keep your family connections hidden from Clark and his sister.
00:54:29Hoping to get by, marry a rich girl, four flesh and lie your way into security.
00:54:33No, that's not true.
00:54:34It's all wrong.
00:54:34You're lying now and I'll prove it.
00:54:40Miss Clark, can you step in a moment, please?
00:54:45Miss Clark.
00:54:45I want to have you answer one question.
00:54:50A gambler named Slip Buchanan won $350,000 on that game yesterday.
00:54:54He won it because your brother was murdered.
00:54:56Did you know that man was Buck's brother?
00:55:05Why, of course I did.
00:55:07And it didn't make any difference to you?
00:55:08Certainly not.
00:55:10Why, shit it.
00:55:15And there you are.
00:55:22Where am I?
00:55:23You tell me.
00:55:24Right back on page one.
00:55:27No trace of poison, the autopsy said.
00:55:29I know that.
00:55:30I was bluffing him.
00:55:31The stuff in that bottle was just a mild bromide.
00:55:34I've got to find out how.
00:55:35That's the important thing, how.
00:55:38Could he have died of old age?
00:55:40You never will if you don't lay off those wisecracks.
00:55:43In every detective story I've ever read, they always brought the suspect back to the scene of the crime and he gave himself away.
00:55:49And in this case, they're just 22 football players, a couple of coaches, some water boys, referees, and a flock of rubbers.
00:55:55Bring them all back.
00:55:56Bring them all back.
00:55:57Play the game all over again, I suppose.
00:55:59Say, here, cut it out, will you?
00:56:04Listen.
00:56:07Maybe that one cylinder brain of yours has given birth to an idea.
00:56:09Am I a proud papa and at my age?
00:56:12I'm going to do it.
00:56:13Do what?
00:56:14Bring them all back and play the game over.
00:56:16Ah, now, listen.
00:56:16Play for play.
00:56:17You've got the charts.
00:56:19I'll get those guys so hopped up and hysterical that somebody will crack.
00:56:22Exactly.
00:56:23And it better not be you.
00:56:27Now, boys.
00:56:29We're going to replay the game from the start of the second quarter up to the time when Clark made his run.
00:56:34And I want everyone to try and remember everything you did in each play and do exactly the same thing today.
00:56:41Mr. Moran here has a complete list of the charts and plays in order, so we can check on everything.
00:56:46The rest is up to you.
00:56:48I want you to help all you can by remembering what you did individually.
00:56:52I'm here for just one purpose.
00:56:54To find out how Walter Clark was killed.
00:56:57My boys are ready, Buchanan.
00:56:59All right, then.
00:56:59You got him on the field.
00:57:01Old fellas, another thing about Buckham.
00:57:04Forget all that newspaper stuff.
00:57:06It put him in a tough spot.
00:57:08Now, do all you can to make it as easy as possible for him.
00:57:11Because after all, in the last analysis, the guilty person may be anyone in this room.
00:57:17Come in, Buck.
00:57:23Glad to see you back, boy.
00:57:25Come on.
00:57:29Hello, Buck.
00:57:31Hello, Buck.
00:57:31Get into your suit and I'll explain on the way out to the field.
00:57:34Thanks for helping me out, Buck.
00:57:35Who takes Clark's place?
00:57:37Greenwood there.
00:57:38Oh.
00:57:39Don't mind, do you, son?
00:57:41No, no.
00:57:42That's okay with me.
00:57:44Sweet mama.
00:57:45I certainly wouldn't like that job.
00:57:53All right, now, boys.
00:57:54Take your positions as you were at the start of the second quarter.
00:57:58Come on, boys.
00:57:58Let's call.
00:58:03What's the next play?
00:58:05Spinner through left guard.
00:58:07Thirty-eight carrying the ball.
00:58:08What's a spinner?
00:58:08Twenty-four snaps to thirty-four.
00:58:12Who faints the two on the right, spins left and passes the thirty-eight.
00:58:14Fifteen and thirty-four take out eighty-seven and eighty-three.
00:58:17Twenty-one boxes out the end.
00:58:18Never mind, I'll watch it.
00:58:21Bucken.
00:58:22This is a spinner through left guard.
00:58:25Come in.
00:58:27What is it?
00:58:28Southard was playing farther out to the extreme left.
00:58:31How about that, Southard?
00:58:34Well, maybe I was a little farther over.
00:58:36All right, let's go.
00:58:40Finally.
00:58:42All right.
00:58:43Fight.
00:58:44One, two, three.
00:58:45Come on.
00:58:55What is this?
00:58:56What is this?
00:58:57That's what happened in the game.
00:58:58He kicked Wally, and I ran over and pulled him off.
00:59:00So, what are you trying to do?
00:59:01Pin something on me?
00:59:02None of that stuff.
00:59:02Did you kick Clark?
00:59:04Sure, I kicked him.
00:59:05After that straight arm he gave me, I'd have kicked his teeth out if I could have reached him.
00:59:07That's very interesting.
00:59:08We'll take that up later.
00:59:09Go on with the game.
00:59:10The ball went to university right here.
00:59:12Okay.
00:59:13Come on, gang.
00:59:13All right, our ball.
00:59:14Let's go.
00:59:14This is the penalty for too much time, boys.
00:59:33This is one place I want to check up.
00:59:38This is where you had that little argument with Clark.
00:59:40What was it all about?
00:59:41Well, he was sore because I was keeping the ball away from him.
00:59:43Yeah, we noticed that.
00:59:44Why?
00:59:45Well, it was just as I told you, Mr. McKenna.
00:59:47I was worried about him.
00:59:48And I knew if he wasn't carrying the ball, he wasn't in so much danger.
00:59:51Danger from what?
00:59:52Well, I didn't know what exactly, but I knew there was something hanging over him.
00:59:57Maybe if I'd been able to watch him closer, why, he'd be standing here alive now instead of...
01:00:02Stop it!
01:00:02Stop it!
01:00:03I can't stand it!
01:00:05There was something hanging over him.
01:00:07It's here now, in this field.
01:00:09I can feel it.
01:00:09I fell it on that last place.
01:00:11I don't want to take the part of a dead man.
01:00:13Leave me alone!
01:00:14Leave me alone!
01:00:15I won't take the place of a dead man.
01:00:17Something will happen to me.
01:00:18I tell you, I won't do it!
01:00:19You'll let him out!
01:00:30Get him into the locker room, quick.
01:00:31Where was Clark at this point?
01:00:36Right there, getting a rubdown.
01:00:38He's positive?
01:00:39Yes, sir.
01:00:40I was talking to him.
01:00:41All right.
01:00:42Where's the boy that's doubling for Clark?
01:00:44How about that boy, Collins?
01:00:45I need him.
01:00:46He's through for the day, McKenna.
01:00:47You can't use him anymore.
01:00:49Anybody else?
01:00:50Come on, boys.
01:00:52Mr. McKenna's got to have someone take Clark's position.
01:00:55Anybody at all?
01:00:56Oh, no, not me.
01:01:03I didn't know anything about football.
01:01:05All right.
01:01:06I'll use Bucken.
01:01:08But that'll jam everything up.
01:01:10The plays won't be the same with me in the wrong position.
01:01:12Never mind about that.
01:01:13I may have a couple of ideas of my own.
01:01:16Listen, Mr. McKenna, that's not fair.
01:01:17I'm in a spot, and I'm trying to prove something.
01:01:19You are proving something.
01:01:20You're afraid.
01:01:21I am not.
01:01:22All right.
01:01:23Get up on the slide.
01:01:29Let me have the clothes Clark wore in the game.
01:01:37You don't mind, do you?
01:01:38Not a bit.
01:01:43Mr. McKenna, are you any particular reason for wanting me to wear the identical jersey that
01:01:48Wally wore?
01:01:49Maybe.
01:01:49Why?
01:01:50Well, this isn't it.
01:01:51That's all.
01:01:51What do you mean?
01:01:52The one that Wally wore in the second half had a tear on the shoulder.
01:01:55How about that, Collins?
01:01:56You brought these direct to me last night.
01:01:58Certainly I did.
01:01:59And that's the jersey I took off Clark.
01:02:01This isn't the one, I tell you.
01:02:02Say, what kind of an alibi are you trying to pull?
01:02:04Why do you want to do it?
01:02:05Wait a minute.
01:02:05Wait a minute.
01:02:06What difference does it make, anyway?
01:02:08Get up on the table.
01:02:19Okay, boy, do your stuff.
01:02:21Mr. McKenna, he didn't rub Wally down.
01:02:25It was Collins.
01:02:27That's right, I did.
01:02:28Well, go ahead then.
01:02:30Well, you don't want to waste time waiting while I actually give him a rubdown, certainly.
01:02:34You're the one that's wasting time.
01:02:45Well, let's have something right.
01:02:47The jersey was wrong.
01:02:49Let's have the right bottle.
01:02:51Now, how can I possibly be expected to remember what bottle I used?
01:02:54Well, I remember.
01:02:55You got it from your locker.
01:02:57If you remembered what happened to Wally as well as you seem to remember everything else,
01:03:00you'd save us all a lot of trouble.
01:03:01What are those crooks, Collins?
01:03:03How do you know he got the bottle out of his locker?
01:03:05Because I was sitting there talking to Wally when he asked me to move.
01:03:08All right, Doc, open up and get going.
01:03:20Nice luck.
01:03:21Oh.
01:03:21Oh.
01:03:21And now, how do I know he's going to do this?
01:03:47All right, team, on the field.
01:04:00Making a crack like that in front of a detective.
01:04:03I'll teach him to keep his loose mouth shut.
01:04:05Take it easy, Tyler.
01:04:12What's the next play?
01:04:13Forward pass.
01:04:14Uh, no.
01:04:17The leather egg is thrown to that young gentleman with the number two on his back
01:04:21who tosses it to that great big blonde fellow way over there on the outskirts.
01:04:27You get me?
01:04:28I got you.
01:04:29Yeah.
01:04:30Hey, Mac, look.
01:04:3285, 29, 78.
01:04:34Hit on you.
01:04:36This is one play I figured, right?
01:04:40Hello, Slip.
01:04:41I'm expecting you.
01:04:42Thought for a while you wouldn't come out.
01:04:44I'd have to send for you.
01:04:45What are you trying to hang on my kid brother?
01:04:47Nothing yet.
01:04:49Somebody is, according to the papers.
01:04:51Little misprint.
01:04:51Stick around.
01:04:53Don't worry.
01:04:54I'll be here.
01:05:01What next, Buckin?
01:05:03This is where Griffith was hurt and I went in.
01:05:05All right, Griffith.
01:05:06Stay where you are.
01:05:06From now on, you're Buckin.
01:05:08Yes, sir.
01:05:09All right, fellas.
01:05:10Come on.
01:05:11Collins.
01:05:12I want to talk to you.
01:05:13Sure, sure.
01:05:14But not now.
01:05:15Later.
01:05:16First down.
01:05:18All right, now.
01:05:21All right, this is a play, fellas.
01:05:2321.
01:05:27Let's call this thing off, McKenna.
01:05:28You're not gaining anything by all this.
01:05:30You'll have these boys all haywire.
01:05:32Forget it.
01:05:38Hey, that's just the way Wally looked before the play.
01:05:41Hey, that's just the way Wally looked before the play.
01:06:11Get those doctors.
01:06:21Collins, knock them.
01:06:30Hey, Mac.
01:06:34Boys, come on.
01:06:35Get back to the kit wing.
01:06:36Come on, boys.
01:06:37Give them a break, boys.
01:06:38Give them a break, boys.
01:06:38Give them a break.
01:06:38Give them a break, now.
01:06:41What is it, Doc?
01:06:42We've scheduled them to hospital quick.
01:06:50Wait a minute, Collins.
01:06:52What did you do to my brother?
01:06:53I couldn't help it, McKenna.
01:06:54You double-crossing rat.
01:06:55You killed class.
01:06:56I didn't mean to kill anybody.
01:06:57What did you do?
01:06:58What did you use?
01:06:59Nitroglycerin.
01:07:00I figured they'd never catch on.
01:07:01They'd never think of it.
01:07:02I made a solution gun, rubbed it in.
01:07:04But I didn't mean to kill anybody.
01:07:05I thought it would just make him sick enough to get him out of the game.
01:07:09And everything would have been okay if he hadn't made that long run.
01:07:11The overexertion killed him.
01:07:13And now, now you've done the same thing to my brother.
01:07:16But you're in this too, Buchanan.
01:07:17You're just as guilty as I am.
01:07:19So keep away from me.
01:07:20There's enough of that stuff in here to blow us both to hell.
01:07:22And so help me, I'll let you have it.
01:07:24Put that bottle down.
01:07:26Don't!
01:07:42And there I was standing there with my eyeballs hanging on my mustache,
01:07:47listening to this quack Dr. Collins splattered the spinach.
01:07:51And when he said he'd blow up the place, ooh, was I a rabbit?
01:07:55Oh!
01:07:57Pardon me, Chief.
01:07:58I want to jot down a little something.
01:08:02Hello, hello!
01:08:07He's got his mouth full of corks again.
01:08:10It seems this guy Collins was doing a lot of the legal work for hoodlums around here.
01:08:16And Ortele was wise to it.
01:08:18And he told Collins he'd better be a good little boy and do what he said or else.
01:08:22Oh, but man, can you imagine slipping a guy nitroglycerin?
01:08:27I already told you that he rubbed it on him.
01:08:31But he used too much and the overexertion caused by Clark's long run brought on a brain hemorrhage.
01:08:37No, not me, Clark.
01:08:42Well, the same to you.
01:08:44And so the doc, oh, pardon me.
01:08:47Hello, hello, Mac.
01:08:49Oh, pardon me, Chief.
01:08:50The mayor just came in to congratulate him.
01:08:52Sit right now, mayor, and take the lead out of your, uh, what?
01:08:58Oh, oh.
01:08:59Oh, Bucken, Bucken, oh, he'll recover.
01:09:02He's okay.
01:09:03Yeah, he didn't give him so much of the stuff and they knew what to do for him.
01:09:08Yeah, he's over at the hospital with his girlfriend holding his head.
01:09:11And both are doing very nicely, if you know what I mean.
01:09:14That's short, Horatio.
01:09:15I told you we eat at seven.
01:09:17The wife's having relatives for supper.
01:09:19Oh, fine.
01:09:20I never tasted one of them, but if you can eat them, I can.
01:09:23Come on, come on.
01:09:24Yeah, okay.
01:09:25Oh, Chief, I've got to cut this short.
01:09:27I've got to, I'll give you the rest of the dope later on.
01:09:30Oh, Chief, wait a minute, listen.
01:09:32While we're on it, I want you to jot it down that this whole mystery was washed up by none other than Mr. General J. McKenna,
01:09:39late of the New York, no, no, McKenna, Mac.
01:09:43Mac.
01:09:44M, M as in mug, G as in cockroach, and K as in crazy.
01:09:54My good old pal.
01:09:56Ha, ha, ha, ha.
01:09:56THE END
01:10:26THE END
