00:00:00The End
00:01:00The revolution in Cuba had gone on for five years.
00:01:22All that time, I read about it in the Miami papers.
00:01:26Never paid too much attention.
00:01:30And suddenly, the whole island had exploded.
00:01:32The radio was filled with it.
00:01:34Batista and his government was on the run.
00:01:37And a guy named Castro, who had parlayed a handful of Cuban rebels into a victorious army, was a new hero.
00:01:44He'd won the revolution and taken Havana.
00:01:47As soon as the plane companies resumed their schedules to Cuba, I got a ticket in one of the first flights out of Miami.
00:01:55The newspaper said there was still some trouble in Havana.
00:01:58But I had trouble on my own.
00:02:01And that was more important to me.
00:02:02Now, there was Havana itself.
00:02:06And somewhere down there, my best friend, Hank Miller, had disappeared.
00:02:10With all the shooting that had gone on during the revolution, I didn't know if Hank was alive or dead.
00:02:19But I had to find out.
00:02:20I owed it to him.
00:02:22And I owed it to my conscience.
00:02:23I hadn't been in Havana in many years.
00:02:28But everything seemed the same.
00:02:30Quiet.
00:02:32Peaceful.
00:02:33The place didn't look as if something like the revolution had ever happened.
00:02:41You are Senor Daggett?
00:02:43Yeah.
00:02:45How'd you know my name?
00:02:46Alto!
00:02:47Looks like there was one guy who didn't believe the revolution was over.
00:02:56A minor incident.
00:02:59I must ask you to come with me to police headquarters, Senor.
00:03:03What for?
00:03:04The lieutenant will explain everything.
00:03:06Suppose I don't want to.
00:03:08Then you will be considered an uncooperative visitor.
00:03:11And flown right back to Miami on the next plane.
00:03:13Well, in that case, let's go.
00:03:24Maybe it was a bad beginning in my search for Hank.
00:03:28But at least I was off to a fast start.
00:03:30A guy had been shot to death right in front of my eyes.
00:03:34And now I'd been grabbed by the police.
00:03:35You are the same Steve Daggett who made two telephone calls from Miami
00:03:42to the American Council here in Havana
00:03:44concerning the disappearance of a Mr. Miller.
00:03:48Naturally, the American Council got in touch with us here.
00:03:52Unfortunately, we've had little success.
00:03:54You've had little success.
00:03:56That's why I'm here.
00:03:58Kindly listen to me, Senor.
00:03:59No, you listen to me.
00:04:00To you boys, Hank Miller is just another name on the missing persons list.
00:04:05So you play it slow and official-like.
00:04:07Well, I want to find Hank fast.
00:04:11I appreciate your concern, Senor.
00:04:13Just a few questions.
00:04:15Be patient.
00:04:17Senor Miller's last job was as a mechanic
00:04:20in a small boat factory near the waterfront.
00:04:22Senor Miller had several such jobs in the city.
00:04:25He was fired three times.
00:04:26Yes, I know all about that.
00:04:27You own a small airfield outside of Miami, is that correct?
00:04:35You've been checking up on me, huh?
00:04:39And you offered Senor Miller employment and he agreed.
00:04:45Well, he said he'd arrive the next morning.
00:04:47So I waited all that day.
00:04:50Then I phoned him.
00:04:51No contact.
00:04:52Never heard from him again.
00:04:54Waited one week, two weeks.
00:04:56Why did your friend come to Havana in the first place?
00:05:00Well, he had an itch that sort of kept him on the move.
00:05:06Was the itch alcoholic?
00:05:10Is that your business, too?
00:05:12Might be.
00:05:14Okay.
00:05:16Yeah, he had a problem.
00:05:18Hank had a drinking problem.
00:05:20And that kept him moving from job to job.
00:05:23I see.
00:05:24Okay.
00:05:26We understand each other, Senor.
00:05:30There is someone here in Havana whom I would like you to meet.
00:05:34Oh?
00:05:35Who?
00:05:35This meeting could help find your friend.
00:05:38It's quite important that you come with me.
00:05:40Well, then you're not asking me to meet this guy.
00:05:43You're telling me.
00:05:43Mm-hmm.
00:05:45Let us say I'm inviting you, Senor.
00:05:48Just one small phone call and we'll be on our way.
00:05:52For some reason, the lieutenant was clamming up about the guy we were going to see.
00:05:57But whoever he was, he lived well.
00:06:00This was no flop joint.
00:06:01Yes.
00:06:04Senora, we'll see you in a moment.
00:06:06Gracias.
00:06:10Senora.
00:06:11I didn't know it was a lady.
00:06:13And a most interesting one.
00:06:15An expensive one.
00:06:17Hank never knew that kind.
00:06:18Oh.
00:06:27Senorita Grace, oh, very kind of you.
00:06:37Senor Daggett, I would like you to meet Hank Miller's wife.
00:06:42Well, what do you know?
00:06:45Hank mustn't have been as broke as he said he was.
00:06:47I'm very glad to know you.
00:06:50Any friend of Hank's is a friend of mine.
00:06:53Senorita, last week I told you that an old friend of Senor Miller from Miami had called the counsel here.
00:07:00Yes.
00:07:02With Senor Daggett here, I thought perhaps you might recollect something you didn't remember to tell me when I first questioned you.
00:07:09Why should you think that?
00:07:13Well, since both you and Senor Daggett were so close to Senor Miller,
00:07:18it seemed natural for me to presume that you two might have met in the past.
00:07:23Well, you're wrong, Lieutenant.
00:07:25Seeing Mr. Daggett doesn't make me remember anything.
00:07:28Well, that's too bad.
00:07:30After all, as I told you, Lieutenant, I hadn't seen Hank for weeks and weeks before he disappeared.
00:07:35Therefore, I can't help you at all.
00:07:39Where did you come to Havana, Mr. Daggett?
00:07:42Oh, I have a job to do.
00:07:45Si, Senor Daggett is cooperating with us in trying to find Senor Miller.
00:07:49And why did you come to Havana?
00:07:51I have a job singing at the Mirador.
00:07:55Well, must pay good money.
00:08:03Senor.
00:08:05Buenos dias.
00:08:06Gracias, querida.
00:08:28If I hadn't known you had visitors...
00:08:30Senor Daggett, may I present one of the most eminent citizens in all of Cuba?
00:08:35Senor Fernando Ricardo.
00:08:37Hello.
00:08:39Eminent before Castro or after?
00:08:42Senor Ricardo does not mix in politics.
00:08:45He owns many plantations.
00:08:47And he's one of the most charitable men in all of Cuba to our people.
00:08:51Looks like charity begins at home.
00:08:54Doesn't it in your country, Senor?
00:08:56Senor Daggett, I think we had better go now, hmm?
00:09:00Yeah.
00:09:01Bye.
00:09:03Adios, senorita, senor.
00:09:05Gracias.
00:09:09Senorita.
00:09:12Please, lieutenant.
00:09:13No more questions.
00:09:14Of course, senor, but since senorita Gray apparently didn't recognize senor Daggett as someone she knew,
00:09:23such an interesting photo of her with her missing husband, senor Daggett.
00:09:28My men found it when they went through senor Miller's belongings in his room.
00:09:33Adios.
00:09:38Fernando.
00:09:39Explica me.
00:09:40I just didn't want to get us involved in Hank's disappearance.
00:09:46After all, we had nothing to do with it.
00:09:48The police know that.
00:09:51Well, I didn't want them to know...
00:09:52That you knew this man, Daggett?
00:09:54Why?
00:09:56Do you think lieutenant Garcia's a fool?
00:09:58Or that I'm a fool?
00:10:01Steve and I were friends, yes.
00:10:03A long time ago.
00:10:05It meant nothing then and it means nothing now.
00:10:08Please believe me.
00:10:09Very well.
00:10:12Since it pleases me to believe you.
00:10:19What is done...
00:10:21is done.
00:10:30You knew about Monica and me before you ever took me up there.
00:10:33Well, Daggett, I knew that long before her marriage to senor Miller,
00:10:36you and senorita Gray were very close friends.
00:10:39Well, if you knew that, why did you want to bring us together?
00:10:43To see if you were still very close friends.
00:10:46Oh, no.
00:10:47Wait a minute.
00:10:49You thought that Monica and I...
00:10:52That...
00:10:53That we had poor Hank put out of the way.
00:10:56It was a possibility.
00:11:00It was a possibility.
00:11:01Well, look.
00:11:02If you thought I might have gotten rid of Hank...
00:11:05wouldn't Ricardo have a better reason since Hank was married to Monica?
00:11:10No.
00:11:12Senor Ricardo never met Hank Miller in his entire life.
00:11:15To tell the truth, he didn't even meet senorita Gray until long after she and her husband had separated.
00:11:21So, let us simply forget senor Ricardo in this case.
00:11:28DĆgame.
00:11:29SĆ, this is Lieutenant Garcia.
00:11:32¿Qué?
00:11:34¿Dónde?
00:11:36Voy pronto. Adiós.
00:11:38Perdóname, senor.
00:11:39Lieutenant, wait a minute.
00:11:40I'm sorry, senor, but there are far more urgent problems than the disappearance of your friend.
00:11:44Lieutenant.
00:11:45Far more urgent.
00:11:46My poor country is still troubled by some of Batista's men who are in hiding and managed to smuggle arms into Havana.
00:11:51They think they might have a chance of getting Cuba back.
00:11:54No.
00:11:55DĆgame, senor.
00:11:57What was happening in Cuba wasn't my business.
00:12:00Only that Hank had been here during the revolution.
00:12:03When I got back to my hotel, I was still burned about Garcia throwing me into Monica's lap.
00:12:16How did you know where to find me?
00:12:21The lieutenant didn't mind telling me.
00:12:23Well, that's nice of him.
00:12:25What's he trying to do? Rub us together like a couple of sticks to see if he can start a fire?
00:12:32Steve, I came to explain why I acted as I did this afternoon.
00:12:35I know why.
00:12:37You didn't want Ricardo to guess you'd ever had anything to do with me.
00:12:40Perhaps. It's not his concern.
00:12:42Okay.
00:12:44You've explained.
00:12:48Get out.
00:12:53I'm not finished.
00:12:55I want to tell you about Hank and me.
00:12:57About Hank and you?
00:12:58It's simple.
00:12:59Hank was a pushover.
00:13:01He was always crazy about you.
00:13:03You were on your uppers and you found out Hank had a couple of bucks.
00:13:07Did I guess it?
00:13:09I never thought you'd hate me this much.
00:13:11Did you ever give me any reason not to?
00:13:15I walked out on you, Steve, because I couldn't see any future for us.
00:13:19I admit it.
00:13:21You and your little airfield.
00:13:23No money coming in, no chance.
00:13:25It wasn't much to look forward to.
00:13:27Does Ricardo know that if he didn't have a bank account, you'd walk away?
00:13:30Money can make up for a lot of things, Steve.
00:13:33Don't knock it.
00:13:35Ricardo's like me.
00:13:36He knows what he wants and he goes after it.
00:13:37He's good to me.
00:13:39I'm happy for the first time.
00:13:41Don't spoil it, Steve.
00:13:43Congratulations.
00:13:45Please.
00:13:47Do you need money?
00:13:48I have money now. I can help you.
00:13:50Huh?
00:13:51Just leave Havana.
00:13:52That's really something, to be bribed by you.
00:13:54Steve, I'm not trying to bribe you.
00:13:56You're forgetting a very important reason why I'm here.
00:13:59You've got a missing husband.
00:14:02What do you know about it?
00:14:04Nothing, I swear.
00:14:06We'd been separated long before Hank disappeared.
00:14:09I hadn't even seen him in weeks.
00:14:11I don't believe you.
00:14:13No.
00:14:15I think you'd get rid of a poor drunk like Hank, just so you could latch on to Ricardo.
00:14:19That's not true.
00:14:21Steve, please leave Havana.
00:14:23You'd like that, wouldn't you?
00:14:24Hello.
00:14:31Yeah, this is Daggett.
00:14:33Who?
00:14:35Yeah, sure.
00:14:37When?
00:14:40A half hour?
00:14:42Where?
00:14:44The pier at the end of Avenida de las Palmas.
00:14:47Bottom level.
00:14:49Okay.
00:14:50What?
00:14:53Ever hear of a man called Schluss?
00:14:56Gustav Schluss?
00:14:58Yeah.
00:15:00He's the man who owns the boat shop where Hank worked.
00:15:04Schluss says he knows something about Hank.
00:15:07I'm gonna meet him.
00:15:09Maybe he'll tell me a few things you're trying to forget.
00:15:12Then you won't leave Havana.
00:15:14No.
00:15:16That's the answer.
00:15:18Get out and let me alone.
00:15:20Let's go.
00:15:22Let's go.
00:15:24Let's go.
00:15:26Let's go.
00:15:28Let's go.
00:15:30This was the pier at the end of Avenida de las Palmas.
00:15:33Pier 5.
00:15:35All the way over I kept wondering, how did a guy named Schluss know where to phone me?
00:15:40And why hadn't he told what he knew to the police?
00:15:42A few hours before I'd come here to get answers.
00:15:44Instead I found myself with more questions.
00:15:46What was I doing here?
00:15:48What could I do to find Hank that Garcia and his cops weren't doing already?
00:15:52Why should a poor drunken mechanic who never did anyone any harm in his life, who once upon a time had the guts to save my life in Korea, why should he vanish in thin air?
00:16:09Could Monica have had anything to do with it?
00:16:10Maybe I should have paid more attention to that sign, but my head was so filled with other things that I didn't think about the fact that Schluss had asked me to come to this deserted end of the pier instead of to his main office.
00:16:30It was too quiet. All I could see was a bunch of fishing boats. Something about the setup began to smell bad to me. And it wasn't the fish.
00:16:49Schluss? Schluss?
00:16:55Senor Daggett.
00:16:56Oh. Are you, uh, Gustav Schluss?
00:16:59We have a message for you, senor.
00:17:02You have an hour and fifteen minutes to catch the next plane to Miami.
00:17:06There's a funny thing about this country. Everyone wants me to leave.
00:17:11Now get out of my...
00:17:26You have an hour and twelve minutes left, senor.
00:17:27Perhaps now, you're willing to take the plane.
00:17:32You have an hour and twelve minutes left, senor.
00:17:35Perhaps now, you're willing to take the plane.
00:17:37This time, I took a good look at that sign. I let it sink in. Schluss's boys had caught up with me. Now I was gonna catch up with Schluss.
00:17:51There were two places of business in Schluss's name.
00:17:55But so far, there didn't seem to be a guy named Schluss.
00:17:57Schluss. Schluss. What a name.
00:17:58But so far, there didn't seem to be a guy named Schluss. Schluss. What a name.
00:18:00I was gonna catch up with Schluss.
00:18:01I let it sink in. Schluss's boys had caught up with me.
00:18:03Now I was gonna catch up with Schluss.
00:18:05There were two places of business in Schluss's name.
00:18:20But so far, there didn't seem to be a guy named Schluss. Schluss. What a name.
00:18:29Besides, from the amount of dust on the hull, this boat hadn't been worked on in days. Maybe longer.
00:18:36Maybe even since Hank disappeared.
00:18:50Hank's ring. I'd seen it a lot of times. He couldn't have just lost it. Because if I could find it, he could have too. Maybe he never got the chance to look.
00:19:13It was a long shot. But maybe that ring was telling me Hank was hidden on the other side of that trapdoor.
00:19:43Hank.
00:20:06Hank.
00:20:08Hank.
00:20:09Hank.
00:20:10You!
00:20:11What are you doing?
00:20:12Taggart!
00:20:13You!
00:20:14What are you doing?
00:20:15Taggart!
00:20:17Yes.
00:20:22He's locked in the storeroom.
00:20:24Send me a couple of men immediately.
00:20:26I know him and I'm out of here.
00:20:29How are you?
00:20:31You!
00:20:32What are you doing?
00:20:34Taggart!
00:20:36Yes.
00:20:38He's locked in the storeroom.
00:20:41Yes. He's locked in the storeroom.
00:20:44Sent me a couple of men immediately. Hurry.
00:20:55This was beginning to drive me nuts.
00:20:57Hank was gone, I was being held a prisoner,
00:21:00and none of it seemed to add up to anything that made sense.
00:21:11The furniture gave me something else to think about.
00:21:17It didn't look as though guys just used it to play gin rummy on.
00:21:27The map didn't seem too important to me.
00:21:30Just the circle somebody had put on it
00:21:32because they were around a lot of important buildings.
00:21:37I wanted out. I wanted way out.
00:21:40That lieutenant and I needed a heart-to-heart talk.
00:22:10Here.
00:22:20Here.
00:22:21Come on.
00:22:51Come on, boys.
00:22:53Let's get to the end of it.
00:22:59Come on, boys. Let's get to the end of it.
00:23:21Come on.
00:23:29So, Senor Daggett, we meet again.
00:23:34The sergeant tells me you've been sightseeing under rather trying circumstances.
00:23:39Yeah. I just had a 40-cent scenic tour through an air vent.
00:23:44I think my guide was a character named Schluss.
00:23:48A man who makes boats?
00:23:51Yeah.
00:23:52He phoned me not more than 10 minutes ago to report that a thief had broken into his place of business.
00:23:57Our friend is a smart boy.
00:23:59He gets an alibi and the police working for him before I even have a chance to open my mouth.
00:24:05What would you have the police believe?
00:24:08I'm not sure.
00:24:09Please come.
00:24:11On the way to see Senor Schluss, you will tell me in detail exactly what happened.
00:24:21All of a sudden the place was a beehive.
00:24:31And I just told Garcia nobody had been working here for a long time.
00:24:35Uh, gentleman?
00:24:37Lieutenant Garcia, police.
00:24:38Of course, the man I talked to on the phone.
00:24:41I am Gustav Schluss.
00:24:43Senor Daggett here tells me you talked to him on the phone also.
00:24:46Daggett? I talked to him?
00:24:49I know of no one by such a name, Lieutenant.
00:24:53Skip it.
00:24:54You don't expect him to tell the truth.
00:24:56I do not like being called a liar, Mr...
00:24:59Mr. Daggett.
00:25:00I never talked to you before.
00:25:02Lieutenant, the cellar is over here.
00:25:06It's down there.
00:25:36Less than an hour ago, there was a map of Cuba, Havana, on that wall.
00:25:53There was furniture.
00:25:54There was a table, some chairs, and some crates.
00:25:57Here.
00:25:58All the crates were marked chocolate.
00:26:00Well, you certainly moved fast.
00:26:03What happened to all the crates marked chocolate and all the other stuff that was down here?
00:26:07Chocolate?
00:26:08Me?
00:26:09Mr. Daggett.
00:26:10I'm on a very strict diet.
00:26:12My doctor can tell you that.
00:26:15Well, Senor Daggett.
00:26:19Okay.
00:26:20So there was no chocolate.
00:26:22I didn't get a phone call.
00:26:24I wasn't locked in this cellar.
00:26:26And I didn't get slugged on that pier by a couple of goons.
00:26:29All right?
00:26:31Better.
00:26:34We will do what we can to help find the thief who broke in this...
00:26:37Are you cracked?
00:26:38That's enough, Senor Daggett.
00:26:41I insist you return to your hotel and leave further investigation to the proper authorities.
00:26:48Sure.
00:26:52Thanks for nothing.
00:26:56Now, even Garcia looks suspicious to me.
00:26:58But maybe I couldn't blame him too much.
00:27:02Everything that could be done had been done to make me look like an idiot.
00:27:07Schluss hadn't missed a bet.
00:27:10Or was it Monica who hadn't missed a bet?
00:27:13I decided to find out.
00:27:15Senorita home?
00:27:16Si, Senor.
00:27:17But...
00:27:18Good.
00:27:19She'll see me.
00:27:21Cute kid, ain't you?
00:27:23You'd do anything to get me out of Havana.
00:27:24Well, you're sorry those hoods didn't kill me?
00:27:25Hoods?
00:27:26I don't know what you're talking about.
00:27:27No.
00:27:28You're the only one who knew where I was going.
00:27:29You're the only one who could have set me up as a clay pigeon.
00:27:32Steve, I don't know anything about this.
00:27:33That's the truth.
00:27:34Keep lying.
00:27:35But get one thing in your head.
00:27:36I ain't leaving Havana until I find out what's happened to Hank.
00:27:40Don't you think I want to know.
00:27:41I've been worried about him too.
00:27:42I haven't even seen Hank since we separated.
00:27:43I haven't even seen Hank since we separated.
00:27:45You're the only one who knew where I was going.
00:27:46You're the only one who knew where I was going.
00:27:47You're the only one who could have set me up as a clay pigeon.
00:27:48Steve, I don't know anything about this.
00:27:49That's the truth.
00:27:50Keep lying.
00:27:51But get one thing in your head.
00:27:53I'll find out what's happened to Hank.
00:27:55Don't you think I want to know.
00:27:57I've been worried about him too.
00:27:59I haven't even seen Hank since we separated.
00:28:02Won't you believe me?
00:28:04No.
00:28:05There was a time you would have.
00:28:07That's the time I learned my lesson.
00:28:10Do you think I wanted to marry Hank?
00:28:13That's what throws me.
00:28:15What'd he do?
00:28:16Come up with an oil well or something?
00:28:18I had more to offer you than Hank ever did.
00:28:20That wasn't enough.
00:28:22I married Hank because I was sorry for him.
00:28:26Because I was sorry for myself.
00:28:29The music gets me here.
00:28:31But I don't like the lyrics.
00:28:35All right.
00:28:36You won't believe me.
00:28:38But I'll tell you once more.
00:28:40If there's anything I can do to help find Hank, I'll do it.
00:28:43Sure.
00:28:44Remember that.
00:28:45Sure.
00:28:47All right.
00:28:48If you won't leave Havana, what are you going to do?
00:28:51Maybe I'll find a way to dump those hoods right on your doorstep.
00:29:06Well, this was really something.
00:29:08Schloss coming into the same building, the same floor.
00:29:13I'd taken it for granted Monica was involved in this mess.
00:29:16And now there was the proof.
00:29:18I told you never to come here.
00:29:21I didn't want to trust the phone.
00:29:23For all we know, the whole city is tapped.
00:29:29I don't like it.
00:29:30I'm afraid.
00:29:31You blundering idiot.
00:29:32It was your fault he got into the cellar.
00:29:33How could I know?
00:29:34He would come into my shop after the beating he dropped.
00:29:37Castro's police are turning the whole city inside out.
00:29:39One mistake could cost us our lives.
00:29:41We may lose them anyhow before we succeed in getting our good friend Batista back to power.
00:29:48We can't afford failure, Schloss.
00:29:51That new shipment arises within the hour.
00:29:53You take care of it.
00:29:54I'll report what has happened.
00:30:05Juan Lopez.
00:30:08This was a new name to me.
00:30:10But that was okay.
00:30:12Maybe he was the fresh angle I needed to put some of these pieces together.
00:30:24You can't touch it.
00:30:25Remember that it was very interesting.
00:30:26You can't touch it.
00:30:27You can't touch it.
00:30:28Don't touch it.
00:30:29It's a dark one.
00:30:31I just wanted to touch it.
00:30:33Let it shine.
00:30:34I want to touch it.
00:30:35I want to touch it.
00:30:37You can't touch it.
00:30:40It's stone-hift.
00:30:42So you're really nice.
00:30:46I want to touch it.
00:30:48I want to touch it.
00:30:49Chocolate shipment arrives your warehouse Tuesday night, 9.30.
00:31:16Quality, stop. Payment on receipt, stop.
00:31:21Believe quality should be satisfactory to Miller.
00:31:26And the Miller mentioned in this cable could be Hank.
00:31:37I didn't expect you back this soon.
00:31:40I'll bet you didn't. Who's Juan Lopez?
00:31:43Juan, the man who lives down the hall?
00:31:45He owns the Mirador where I work. Why?
00:31:49Just that, huh? Nothing else.
00:31:52And you're the wide-eyed little kid who's gonna help me find Hank.
00:31:55Where you chiseling...
00:31:56Steve, I've had just about enough of you. Now get out.
00:32:02You know who was just in Lopez's apartment?
00:32:04Schluss. The guy Hank used to work for.
00:32:07Only Schluss is a phony.
00:32:09And he's tied in with your pal, Lopez. I've got a cable in my pocket to prove it.
00:32:14And here, baby. Take a... take a good look at that.
00:32:18That may be all that's left of poor Hank.
00:32:21Hank's ring. Where did you get it?
00:32:25In Schluss's shop. Where maybe Hank got worked over worse than I did.
00:32:30You expect explanations from me. I don't have any.
00:32:36I don't know what's gotten into you, kid.
00:32:39Miami, I thought you were human.
00:32:41Boy, the guy can be a real sucker.
00:32:43Come on. You're coming with me.
00:32:45Where?
00:32:46We're gonna do a little checking. You're gonna be my insurance.
00:32:59If Monica and Schluss were tied up together,
00:33:01I stood a better chance of saving my neck if trouble came up.
00:33:04And Monica was with me.
00:33:16That cable in Lopez's place mentioned Hank and a chocolate shipment to here tonight.
00:33:29Maybe this time I'll get a look inside those crates and see what they really hold.
00:33:34Why don't you let the police do your looking for you?
00:33:36That's what they're paid for.
00:33:38Sure.
00:33:40Depends on who's paying them and how much.
00:33:43You were different in Miami, too, Steve.
00:33:46You used to trust people.
00:33:56Get over here.
00:34:13Schlus, keep your mouth shut.
00:34:26More chocolate.
00:34:28It began to look like Schlus was cornering the candy market.
00:34:32Only it wasn't chocolate at all.
00:34:36Those things were fuses for aerial bombs.
00:34:40I'd seen plenty of them in Korea.
00:34:42And people don't mess with bombs unless they want to drop them on somebody's head.
00:34:47I'd seen plenty of them on somebody's head.
00:34:50Be the funk.
00:34:51Freaking.
00:34:52Po'n arrow no more.
00:34:53I know.
00:34:54Come to God.
00:34:55You!
00:34:56Be the funk.
00:34:57You!
00:34:58What?
00:34:59Promise!
00:35:00Erapatos!
00:35:01The gentleman!
00:35:02Premium!
00:35:04A price!
00:35:05Whoa?
00:35:06No!
00:35:07Yeah.
00:35:08Eat it.
00:35:09First.
00:35:10This says a- debut.
00:35:11There, e holders,
00:35:12We're walking out of here, Schloss.
00:35:39You try to stop us and your friend here won't like it.
00:35:42You're making a very big mistake, Mr. Daggett.
00:35:45You see, baby, he don't want you to get hurt.
00:35:49Out of the way, Schloss.
00:35:51You'll never get out of here alive.
00:36:12Take them down to headquarters and ambulance for this one.
00:36:27Now you know who pays the police.
00:36:36Sure. Thanks, Lieutenant.
00:36:40Schloss would have killed me for sure.
00:36:43Just you?
00:36:46The senorita will have to answer for herself.
00:36:50There are moments, senor, like now,
00:36:53but I'm not sure you didn't have it coming to you.
00:36:56You almost ruined everything for days we've had Schloss watched.
00:37:00You've known about Schloss?
00:37:04You'll both please come with me to headquarters.
00:37:11Buenas noches, senor Ricardo.
00:37:14Lieutenant, senor.
00:37:15I came as quickly as I could.
00:37:17Monica, what has happened?
00:37:19Senor Ricardo, you're a very fortunate man.
00:37:22Senorita Gray came within a few seconds of being killed tonight.
00:37:25The police tell me you put Miss Gray's life in great danger.
00:37:29Why?
00:37:33Lieutenant, tell me.
00:37:35What is this all about?
00:37:37And how can it possibly involve senorita Gray?
00:37:40I am not sure that it does involve her.
00:37:42The man we arrested, Schloss,
00:37:44was one of the lower echelon of her group
00:37:45trying to put Batista back into power.
00:37:47Batista?
00:37:50Well, how would Hank Miller fit into that?
00:37:53A very puzzling question.
00:37:55I would have thought he had nothing to do with it,
00:37:57but then you found the ring and the cable.
00:38:02Senorita, is there anything you can tell us?
00:38:06You've questioned me before.
00:38:08I've told you all I know.
00:38:10But then I thought you might remember something else
00:38:12like in the instance of the photograph.
00:38:14Lieutenant, senorita Gray's personal life
00:38:17has nothing to do with this.
00:38:19The donations made by senor Ricardo to our cause
00:38:21when we were fighting the revolution
00:38:23place him and his friend far above reproach.
00:38:28And now may we leave?
00:38:29Si, my apologies senor, senorita.
00:38:31Buenas noches.
00:38:33Sleep tight, baby.
00:38:35Don't let your conscience keep you awake.
00:38:38You are making a very dangerous enemy, senor Daggett.
00:38:48You'll have to stand in line.
00:38:52Send in Schloss.
00:38:54Again?
00:38:59He's a very clever and a very stubborn little man.
00:39:01He tells nothing.
00:39:03But sometimes there are ways of seeing things
00:39:05rather than hearing them, if the conditions are right.
00:39:14Now bring in senor Lopez.
00:39:24What is the meaning of this outrage?
00:39:26Sit down.
00:39:27May I introduce senor Daggett, an American?
00:39:31I insist on knowing why I was brought here
00:39:33as though I am a common criminal.
00:39:35You are the one presuming what you are, senor.
00:39:37The police merely wish your cooperation.
00:39:39Have you ever seen this before?
00:39:46No. Why should I? It is not addressed to me.
00:39:49It was found in your apartment by senor Daggett.
00:39:52I have never seen it before.
00:39:54And if this man got into my apartment,
00:39:56he broke the law.
00:39:57There are worse ways of breaking the law.
00:39:59This man is a dangerous supporter of Batista.
00:40:01What was he doing in your apartment tonight?
00:40:03Schloss is a dangerous man?
00:40:08This is not a laughing matter, senor.
00:40:09I am sorry, but it seems preposterous.
00:40:12Oh, Lieutenant Garcia,
00:40:13I never thought I could get a gentleman like senor Lopez
00:40:16into such trouble.
00:40:18A million apologies, senor.
00:40:20You mean it is true about you?
00:40:22Yes, senor.
00:40:24They arrested me tonight.
00:40:26But since I visited you and senor Daggett,
00:40:29saw us together.
00:40:31The cable about the shipment of chocolate
00:40:33was addressed to Schloss.
00:40:34Why was it found in your apartment?
00:40:35It must have fallen from my pocket.
00:40:38And then it crawled up Lopez's desk
00:40:41and hid under his blotter.
00:40:43Senores, Schloss built my boat.
00:40:46I am a speedboat enthusiast.
00:40:48I race for prizes.
00:40:50And that's all I know about the whole situation.
00:40:52But I assure you,
00:40:54if I had known he was conspiring against the new government,
00:40:57I would have had him arrested myself.
00:40:59Very well, senor.
00:41:00I am sorry to have inconvenience to him ago now.
00:41:03And in the future, you will please remember
00:41:06that I do not like having my patriotism question.
00:41:09I am in the cafe business.
00:41:11My interest is not in politics.
00:41:13And as for you, senor Americano,
00:41:16since nothing is missing from my apartment,
00:41:18I will not pay for charges.
00:41:20But I would advise you to go home to your own country
00:41:23before you do get into trouble.
00:41:25Adios.
00:41:31Take him back to his cell.
00:41:33It is amazing how many enemies you can make in one night, senor.
00:41:42In my job, senor,
00:41:44one learns to be patient as well as vigilant.
00:41:48I have often found that
00:41:50if you give a man enough rope,
00:41:52he will hang himself.
00:41:56Lopez won't hang easy.
00:41:58Make sure that rope is strong.
00:42:01See you.
00:42:04Adios, senor.
00:42:09The next morning, I felt there was something wrong.
00:42:12Call it a hunch.
00:42:14A premonition.
00:42:15Anything.
00:42:16All I know is I had it.
00:42:20Who is it?
00:42:21The police, senor.
00:42:23You will please come with me, senor.
00:42:24Oh?
00:42:25Something come up?
00:42:26Yes, sir.
00:42:27The lieutenant is very concerned.
00:42:28Senorita Gray has been called also, senor.
00:42:30Let's go.
00:42:34And you definitely identify these as belonging to Hank Miller.
00:42:42Yeah.
00:42:47These things are Hank's.
00:42:50I was afraid something like this would happen.
00:42:54I tried to stop his drinking.
00:42:56I honestly tried, Steve.
00:42:58I do not think there is anything to gain
00:43:00by your trying to identify the body, senorita Gray.
00:43:03Don't you, senor Daggett?
00:43:04There is little enough for anyone to recognize.
00:43:08Lieutenant, how did it happen?
00:43:12Overexposure.
00:43:15He must have gotten very drunk and fallen in the rain.
00:43:19Where?
00:43:20Where was he found?
00:43:21In a remote area about eight miles from his home.
00:43:24Well, I guess that washes up the matter for both of us.
00:43:33Thanks very much, lieutenant.
00:43:35Good luck, senor.
00:43:38Senorita.
00:43:39I never saw Hank's place.
00:43:56Where did he live?
00:43:59A little house on the beach, outside of town.
00:44:03I didn't know he could afford anything like that.
00:44:05When we were first married, I hoped Hank would change,
00:44:10forget his drinking.
00:44:13If we had a nice place to live in,
00:44:16I'd bought this little house for us.
00:44:18You bought it?
00:44:21I liked Hank.
00:44:23I didn't love him, but I liked him.
00:44:26He was my friend as well as yours.
00:44:29I remembered those days.
00:44:32I didn't think you did.
00:44:33Now you know.
00:44:41He was pretty along the beachfront.
00:44:43Peaceful.
00:44:45I could understand why Monica had thought living here
00:44:47might give Hank a solid reason for laying off the bottle.
00:44:51Too bad Hank hadn't seen it that way.
00:44:53Well, this is fine.
00:45:10Fine.
00:45:14But I guess it didn't mean too much to Hank without you in it.
00:45:16I don't know, Steve.
00:45:19I'm not so sure I was good for him.
00:45:21I thought I'd be, but maybe I was wrong.
00:45:24You blaming yourself for what happened?
00:45:27I wish I could cry about this.
00:45:32Maybe I did my share when I had to leave Hank.
00:45:35It's hard to believe he's dead, isn't it?
00:45:37Yeah.
00:45:38Yeah, he was the kind of guy that got a boot just out of breathing.
00:45:44Monica, I'm sorry about some of the things I said to you.
00:45:49I'm sorry.
00:45:51I guess I deserve some of them.
00:45:54You want to look through Hank's things?
00:45:56Uh-huh. There's time.
00:46:02So...
00:46:04I gather...
00:46:06Hank was still carrying the torch for you when we were going together in Miami.
00:46:10Hmm?
00:46:12But he didn't say anything about it after you and I had broken up.
00:46:16No.
00:46:18No, he never would.
00:46:20After that, he begged me to marry him.
00:46:23At that time, nothing seemed to make sense.
00:46:26I was still in love with you.
00:46:29But I wasn't satisfied.
00:46:31I had to keep singing to get places.
00:46:34I thought if I went to Havana with Hank...
00:46:37you know the rest.
00:46:40Do I?
00:46:42Let's see.
00:46:44You married Hank.
00:46:46You were in love with me.
00:46:48And now there's Ricardo.
00:46:51I never stopped loving you.
00:46:54Well...
00:46:56It took Hank's death to make us realize...
00:46:59Oh...
00:47:01Boy, what a mess we made of things.
00:47:03Well, how do we straighten them out?
00:47:05How do we straighten them out?
00:47:18Looks like Miami again.
00:47:21You bringing me coffee.
00:47:23Like nothing ever changed.
00:47:25It seems right this way.
00:47:26More than all the other things that have happened.
00:47:28Including Ricardo?
00:47:30Including Ricardo.
00:47:32Well, he won't like it.
00:47:34No.
00:47:36I think we'd better be getting back.
00:47:37What's that?
00:47:51Hank.
00:47:53Oh, pal.
00:47:56Monica?
00:47:59Give me a hand.
00:48:07Hank.
00:48:13Hank was alive.
00:48:15His death had been strictly a plant.
00:48:17A phony.
00:48:20But who was responsible?
00:48:22And why had they gone to so much trouble?
00:48:25Gotta get out of here.
00:48:27Lie down, Hank.
00:48:28You're in no condition to move around.
00:48:30I gotta get out.
00:48:31They'll find me.
00:48:33Who?
00:48:34Schluss?
00:48:35Schluss is a flunky.
00:48:37Goes higher.
00:48:38Much higher.
00:48:41How'd you know about Schluss?
00:48:43Never mind, Hank.
00:48:45What's the deal?
00:48:46Why are they after you?
00:48:48I need a drink.
00:48:49Brother do I need a drink.
00:48:50Hank, it might not be a good idea.
00:48:51Please.
00:48:53No lectures?
00:48:55I think there's still some rum in the kitchen.
00:49:00Help me out, Steve.
00:49:02Yeah.
00:49:05Easy, boy.
00:49:07There we are.
00:49:09There we are.
00:49:15What are you doing here?
00:49:17Came to Havana looking for you.
00:49:28I remember now.
00:49:29That job in Miami.
00:49:31Yeah.
00:49:33I couldn't do it, pal.
00:49:37They made me a proposition.
00:49:38Schluss and his men.
00:49:40What kind?
00:49:43Hank Miller.
00:49:44Mechanical genius, that's me.
00:49:47Batista's die-hards had been buying up a bunch of old transport planes.
00:49:51I was supposed to convert them over into bombers.
00:49:53You let yourself be talked into something like that?
00:49:59Let myself.
00:50:01They didn't give me any choice.
00:50:03I told them to go take a flying jump.
00:50:06And they clobbered me.
00:50:08Give me another drink, somebody.
00:50:10I don't feel so hot.
00:50:11What kind of situation like that?
00:50:12I can't do it.
00:50:14You'll take a look, too.
00:50:15I did not do it.
00:50:17I don't know what to do.
00:50:18I was on a wall of to story, too.
00:50:19I don't know what to do.
00:50:21Why did the police see me up there?
00:50:22When I woke up, I was on a tobacco plantation a hundred miles from here.
00:50:27Those guys will stop at nothing.
00:50:31They got their bombers now.
00:50:36Well, if I didn't do what they wanted, they'd have killed me.
00:50:40Early this morning, they got careless.
00:50:42And I was able to swipe a jeep.
00:50:44That's how I copped this.
00:50:47Is that jeep around here now?
00:50:49I drove all day with them chasing after me.
00:50:52But finally the jeep ran out of gas four or five miles from here.
00:50:56I walked the rest of the way.
00:50:58But when they find that jeep...
00:51:02They're coming.
00:51:19C'mon!
00:51:34Hank, these characters know you live here?
00:51:38The house is in Monica's name.
00:51:41Okay...
00:51:42Just sit tight.
00:51:49They're gone, Hank.
00:52:11They're gone, Hank.
00:52:21Must be your boys, all right.
00:52:23How many of them are there?
00:52:24Two.
00:52:25There are dozens of them all around.
00:52:27They'll turn this whole area upside down.
00:52:30They can't afford to start looking.
00:52:32Hank, if you did what they wanted on those planes,
00:52:34why should they worry about you now?
00:52:37I know what they're up to.
00:52:41At 5 o'clock tomorrow morning, they're going to bomb Havana.
00:52:50Why?
00:52:51They're really playing it big.
00:52:53Besides the planes,
00:52:55they've got hundreds of ex-army men hiding out in the hills
00:52:57and spies all over Havana.
00:53:00Garcia can warn the right people.
00:53:08Dead.
00:53:08I'm sorry, huh?
00:53:13I meant to pay that bill.
00:53:15But I always seem to get too thirsty around bill time.
00:53:19Steve, we've got to notify the authorities somehow.
00:53:22We can't let this happen.
00:53:23Those Batista guys will be watching the roads.
00:53:27Hank,
00:53:28you stay on rest for a while.
00:53:31Then we'll make a run for it.
00:53:32Maybe we can reach down.
00:53:37Okay.
00:53:40How do you like that?
00:53:42The three of us,
00:53:43back together.
00:53:46It's just like old times.
00:53:54Pablo,
00:53:55your bomber will lead the apex of the triangle.
00:53:58You will concentrate in this area.
00:54:00Point out your objectives.
00:54:01Costos' headquarters.
00:54:03President de Son,
00:54:05Ministry of Justice,
00:54:07State Airport.
00:54:07Ah.
00:54:08The second bomber will concentrate on Fort Gustavo.
00:54:11And the third will finish off the job.
00:54:13The government buildings.
00:54:15Uno, dos, tres.
00:54:17Captain Emila reporting, senor.
00:54:19What is it?
00:54:19El gringo.
00:54:20Which one?
00:54:21Emila, the mechanic.
00:54:22He's escaped from the plantation.
00:54:23Emila.
00:54:24He stole a jeep.
00:54:25We followed him, but he got away.
00:54:27I think he must be wounded.
00:54:28We found the jeep with blood on the seat.
00:54:29Find him, you fool.
00:54:31Radio headquarters.
00:54:32I want every one of our men in Havari in on this.
00:54:34Find him!
00:54:39How about it, Hank?
00:54:42You feel rested enough?
00:54:43Nothing like finding out.
00:54:54No dice.
00:54:58We can't wait any longer.
00:55:00Leave me here.
00:55:01I'll be okay.
00:55:03Do you think you can find a doctor for him?
00:55:05One who can be trusted?
00:55:07Fernando will know one.
00:55:08Does it have to be Fernando?
00:55:12He's influential, Steve.
00:55:13He'll know the right thing to do.
00:55:15Sure.
00:55:16He always knows the right thing to do.
00:55:18He got Monica, didn't he?
00:55:23All right.
00:55:25You get to Fernando.
00:55:27I'll try to reach Garcia.
00:55:29We'll drive to the edge of town.
00:55:31Then split up.
00:55:32Both of you know as much as I do now.
00:55:35If Lopez and the others find it out,
00:55:36your lives won't be worth a dime.
00:55:38We'll be careful.
00:55:39You just lie there, Pappy.
00:55:42Take it easy.
00:55:45Sure, pal.
00:55:46Let's go.
00:56:01Fernando.
00:56:06There will be no doctor.
00:56:09Fernando.
00:56:10You were not alone at that beach house, were you?
00:56:12Were you?
00:56:14Daggett was with you, wasn't he?
00:56:16Yes.
00:56:16Yes, he was.
00:56:17You love him.
00:56:19You're still in love with him.
00:56:21Fernando, you're hurting me.
00:56:22Answer me.
00:56:24All right.
00:56:25If that's what you want to hear.
00:56:27I am in love with Steve.
00:56:29You have made a bad choice, Monica.
00:56:32You have left me no reason at all to protect you.
00:56:35What are you talking about?
00:56:37Protect me from what?
00:56:39My plans for Cuba did not include Mr. Daggett.
00:56:43They no longer include you.
00:56:45You have plans.
00:56:51Senores, venga.
00:56:57Get men to the Miller bitch house.
00:57:00Hank Miller is alive.
00:57:01Don't fail this time.
00:57:03I want him killed.
00:57:04I want him to kill you.
00:57:07Don't fail it.
00:57:08Don't fail it.
00:57:09Don't fall from his house.
00:57:09I want him to kill you.
00:57:10Don't fail it.
00:57:11Don't fail it.
00:57:13Don't fail it.
00:57:13Don't fail it.
00:57:17Horses it down.
00:57:19Oh, yeah.
00:57:30SeƱor?
00:57:32You buy flowers?
00:57:34No, thank you.
00:57:36You're selling more than flowers.
00:57:39I would not see Lieutenant Garcia if you want Senorita Grey to stay alive.
00:57:43Don't try anything, senor.
00:57:44You know, I am an old woman, and I have a long time to practice with this.
00:57:51Come with me.
00:57:53Come with me.
00:57:58Ara.
00:58:14All the orders have been given. The Major Camagüey wants to know if there's anything else.
00:58:20No, all is set. You can return to your post now, senores.
00:58:23Yes, sir.
00:58:27Senores, maƱana Cuba estarƔ nuestro poder.
00:58:30Si, Fernando.
00:58:31No, no, no, no.
00:58:36Seems to me you had a better selection of friends before.
00:58:40I could buy their loyalty.
00:58:42Apparently, I couldn't buy yours.
00:58:45Steve.
00:58:48Ricardo.
00:58:49Well, what do you know?
00:58:50Sientalo aquĆ.
00:58:56Si?
00:58:57Lopez.
00:59:00Well, keep looking.
00:59:02Miller must be found.
00:59:09I have no time for tricks.
00:59:11Miller is not at the beach house.
00:59:14Where is he?
00:59:16We left him there.
00:59:17That's the truth.
00:59:19You.
00:59:21What do you know?
00:59:23Well, it's a good show at the Bijou, but I don't think I can make it.
00:59:29We are a determined man, senor.
00:59:32And Miller stands in our way.
00:59:34We must know where he is.
00:59:38Very well.
00:59:41There is a legend that Americans are less romantic than we Latins.
00:59:45But far more sentimental.
00:59:48We shall see, Mr. Daggett, how real your love for Monica is.
00:59:53Look, Ricardo.
00:59:55You will have adequate time to change your mind.
00:59:59I'll be done.
01:00:00Let me go.
01:00:08Let me go.
01:00:10Let me go.
01:00:13Let me go.
01:00:17Once I would have killed any man who touched her.
01:00:20You have changed that for me, senor Daggett.
01:00:23Since he prefers you now,
01:00:25you will do the protecting by telling me where Miller is.
01:00:29He's at the beach house.
01:00:31Let me go.
01:00:32Let me go.
01:00:35Let me go.
01:00:58Hey.
01:01:00Anima, the imbecile.
01:01:01He's no good to us if he can't talk.
01:01:03Take him in there and bring him too.
01:01:11One of you will tell me what I want to know before we're through.
01:01:14He's dead.
01:01:15That will be one more score to settle with senor Daggett.
01:01:27DĆgame.
01:01:29Si, this is Lieutenant Garcia.
01:01:33Who?
01:01:35Who did you say this is?
01:01:37I'm leveling with you, Lieutenant.
01:01:39I'm Hank Miller.
01:01:41No.
01:01:42No, the funeral was a phony.
01:01:46Look, Lieutenant, I've been hurt.
01:01:49Will you let me do the talking before I pass out?
01:01:51Si, senor.
01:01:52Go ahead quickly.
01:01:54No, senor Daggett never got here.
01:01:58They intend to bomb this morning.
01:02:02It is almost that now.
01:02:06Ricardo.
01:02:08Fernando Ricardo?
01:02:10He's gotta be in on it.
01:02:13Monica went to his place.
01:02:15He's the only one that could have known to send those guys to get me at the beach house.
01:02:18Lieutenant, you gotta send your cops to Ricardo's Prado before those...
01:02:38Senor Miller.
01:02:40Senor, answer me.
01:02:44Senor Miller.
01:02:48I'd stalled, hoping for a break.
01:02:54Monica was still in the other room.
01:02:57I knew she'd be safe so long as they thought I was still unconscious.
01:03:02But now it was getting light.
01:03:04Time was running out.
01:03:06Soon those planes would come over.
01:03:10Si, this is senor Ricardo.
01:03:13But how did they?
01:03:15The police are on the way now.
01:03:16See, have my yacht ready to sail immediately.
01:03:19Hurry.
01:03:21Radio all post.
01:03:23The police have been alerted.
01:03:25Have the man go into the hills until further notice.
01:03:27And destroy all the planes so Castro could not get them.
01:03:46No communications. No orders. No. How do I get to Ricardo's boat?
01:04:01The pier at Avenida San Juan.
01:04:03Avenida San Juan.
01:04:04Is your car downstairs?
01:04:05Yes.
01:04:06Okay.
01:04:07When the police come, you tell them where I've gone.
01:04:09If our friend outside comes to shoot him.
01:04:12You saved my life, baby.
01:04:14You better know what to do with it from here on in.
01:04:15You better know what to do with it from here on in.
01:04:16You better know what to do with it from here on in.
01:04:20You better know what to do with it.
01:04:21Come back.
01:04:26You better know what to do with it from here on in.
01:04:28Go back.
01:04:30Go back.
01:04:35Go back.
01:04:36Go back.
01:04:38Oh, my God.
01:05:08Oh, my God.
01:05:38Oh, my God.
01:06:08Shoot.
01:06:18Go ahead, shoot.
01:06:20What are you waiting for?
01:06:21You're the only one who knows the names the police will want, Ricardo.
01:06:24No, you're not going to die this easy.
01:06:26Oh, my God.
01:06:56Oh, my God.
01:06:57Oh, my God.
01:07:02Steve.
01:07:03It's all right, hon.
01:07:18Let a couple of aspirin won't fix.
01:07:20We have a great deal to thank you for.
01:07:24What about Hank? Is he okay?
01:07:28Steve, the police got to Hank too late.
01:07:31I think your friend has finally found peace.
01:07:38Let's go home, baby.
01:07:48Let's go home.
