00:00The next puzzle is a morning dilemma.
00:02This one is from the Department of Physics of Oxford University.
00:05So you're running late for work, but also craving a caffeine kick.
00:08You pour yourself a steaming cup of black coffee, but it's hot to handle.
00:12How can your cuppa cool down more effectively?
00:14You have two options.
00:15You can go all in, adding milk right away,
00:17and then patiently twiddle your thumbs for a few minutes before taking a sip.
00:20Or you can play it cool, letting your coffee sit for a few minutes
00:23and then swoop in with the milk just before that first sip.
00:30The winning ticket is the second option.
00:34Here's why.
00:35Your coffee starts off hotter than in Option 1 when you introduce the milk.
00:39The thing is, hotter things have a knack for cooling down faster,
00:42thanks to a bigger temperature gap with their surroundings.
00:45So in Option 2, your coffee is racing against time, cooling down at a quicker pace.
00:49Interestingly, both options result in the same amount of time needed to cool the drink down,
00:54but at different rates.
