Carrington, Manchester, UK
Transcript
00:00Happy new season. Easy question to start with team news out of the weekend.
00:04We didn't see Mazerawi or Alessandro the other day at training.
00:07How are they? Do you have any other concerns?
00:09No, news in Licha are out. They cannot play this game.
00:14Josh recover, Andre recover. They are option for this game. We'll see.
00:19And first time we've got to speak to you since you've got Benjamin Czesco joining the club.
00:23What do you feel about his signing, his potential,
00:26and this new front three you now have with Mbwemo and Kunja as well?
00:30How exciting is that now?
00:31First of all, we have more than three.
00:35So they are fighting for the places.
00:38I'm really happy. I think he has a great potential in everything he does.
00:43He can play different type of footballs.
00:47He's going to feel that Premier League is really aggressive.
00:50He's going to learn, but he has a great potential.
00:54I can see Ben be a striker for Manchester United for a long of years.
01:01That's why we pay so much money to have a striker that will have his history in our club.
01:08Ruben, in terms of Benjamin, do you feel like he is able to start this game?
01:13Has he had enough time with you to understand what he needs to do
01:16and to work on his fitness to go from the start against Arsenal?
01:19Of course, we didn't have a lot of time, but he's ready.
01:25First of all, physically, he's ready.
01:27That is a big component in our league.
01:30Then he's really smart.
01:32Every detail that he asks, he's a guy that is always thinking.
01:37He spends all afternoon here working on his fitness.
01:40So he's ready to play.
01:42We'll see if he's going to start.
01:46Ruben, you said in the United States there were times last season
01:51when you set off for games and you feared what was going to happen.
01:56Do you, after this period of time,
01:59are you confident you know what your team has got to deliver?
02:02It's hard to know because we cannot change everything in four weeks,
02:09but we are better.
02:11I know that we are training harder, we are training better.
02:14So I know that we are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game.
02:20We have new players that we need to understand in the real game
02:25what they are capable to do in the moment.
02:28But I'm really more confident.
02:30That is clear.
02:31I'm more confident in this moment.
02:33But again, we cannot change everything in four weeks.
02:36But step by step we are going to be a better team.
02:40But of course I'm more confident.
02:44Have you set the team targets this season?
02:47No, we want to return to Europe.
02:52But it's hard as a Manchester United coach to say one thing like that.
02:57Yes, but we need to be realistic with our fans.
03:00Even that we are going to have to fight a lot
03:03because there are a lot of good teams with more time than us together.
03:07But we are going to fight for it.
03:10We want to improve.
03:12We need to focus game by game.
03:14If we are thinking how we are going to finish the season is a problem.
03:18Let's focus on game by game.
03:20We want to win against Arsenal.
03:22That is the main focus.
03:23Hi, Ruben.
03:27You obviously know Victor Jokeres very well from Sporting.
03:30Can you tell us a bit more?
03:32When you signed him, he hadn't even played in the Premier League.
03:35He goes on to score 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting.
03:40Did you see something there that other people hadn't seen?
03:43Did he develop quicker and better than you could have expected?
03:46That is a question for Mikkel.
03:50But Victor is a different league.
03:53The physicality is different.
03:57In Sporting, they have a very good group of scouting
04:01because they leave from that,
04:04from the players that they can buy and then sell to survive.
04:08I think he is a very good player.
04:13He is going to give different characteristics.
04:16He is going to be different if we face in the beginning of the game
04:18Victor or Havertz, for example.
04:22So we need to be prepared for that.
04:23But it is not a surprise to watch Victor in the big club in England.
04:27Do you want a new midfielders to come in and would you be confident of getting one in?
04:55Because it does look like you are quite light in that area.
04:58I am really happy with our players.
05:01They are working really well.
05:03We have different players for that position.
05:05So we are prepared to win any game with our players.
05:09Are there any players who could potentially step into midfield
05:12who aren't seen as out-and-out midfielders?
05:15Maybe Maze and Mount.
05:17I think he is a player that can play in that position.
05:19If we want something different.
05:21But then we are going to find out during the season.
05:26But we have players to cope and to win games in Premier League.
05:30You said a couple of times last season that obviously Mikel has had a lot of time
05:34to mould his team and they are seeing the results now.
05:38You have also said that perhaps you are not going to get the same amount of time
05:40because this is Manchester United.
05:43As you are starting the new season, how do you assess your position?
05:46You have said that lots of players have got a clean slate.
05:49Do you feel that it is a clean slate for you as well?
05:51That all of last season can just be forgotten
05:52and you should be allowed to have the time this season
05:55to mould the team in the way you want?
05:57I learned a lot last season.
05:59One of the things that I learned is that I don't need to focus a lot in the future.
06:04That doesn't matter.
06:05I don't care.
06:05I just want to win against Arsenal to focus on Arsenal.
06:09And I need to live day by day like my players and focus on each game.
06:13So I learned that everything that gets a little bit noise to our team
06:19I have to take out of the picture.
06:22So I just prepare to coach my team against Arsenal.
06:26Is that a hard thing to do though at Man United?
06:29No, of course, as a manager you have to, with the board,
06:33you have to have a plan, a long plan.
06:35But nowadays with the three interviews every week,
06:41we just need to focus on Arsenal.
06:42We want to win this game against a very good team,
06:47against a very good coach.
06:49Let's focus on that.
06:50Richard and then finish with Paul.
06:53Hi, I just wanted to ask about Bruno Fernandes.
06:55How do the new arrivals benefit him?
06:58Does it change?
06:59And you said over the tour that you want him to be close to the area,
07:02but obviously the new arrivals make it sound like he's probably going to play
07:05in the midfield too.
07:06Do you still want him to be advancing?
07:07Even last season when he plays as a midfielder,
07:12it was like maybe the player that had more shots near the box.
07:19So I think it's a good thing also for Bruno to stay a little bit
07:23during trainings in one position.
07:25Then he's winning a lot of things.
07:30In your journey as a player, you lose some things,
07:32you win some things.
07:34I want Bruno near the ball.
07:36So that is really important for our team.
07:38But last year I felt like sometimes we need Bruno near the goal.
07:42We have now players with different characteristics
07:44that can cope with that.
07:48So we'll try to arrange game by game
07:51the best players in the best positions.
07:54Ruben, could you just clarify something you said about Sesko earlier?
07:58You said that he'd been working or been doing sessions to get fit.
08:01Is that like an extra thing?
08:03No, he does the same as the other players.
08:06What I'm saying is that he's one guy that stays here,
08:09have lunch and then goes to the medical department,
08:12do the stretching.
08:14So the guy is always thinking about football.
08:16He's really obsessed about that.
08:18And that is a good thing because you don't have to think about that aspect
08:22with that young guy.
08:23I don't need to tell Ben, Ben, this is Manchester United,
08:27a lot of pressure, you have to perform,
08:29you need to be ready for the physicality,
08:32we need to be ready for every game is like do or die.
08:38With that guy, I have not that concern.
08:40I have the opposite, enjoy a little bit.
08:43You said earlier that he was asking you questions.
08:46Do you like that?
08:47I really like that, especially when he's smart questions.
08:52So he's listening and he wants to perform.
08:57So that is really good.
