00:00Last week we looked at the worst matches to ever slop onto our screens courtesy of the
00:05biggest trademark party trademark of the Summer trademark.
00:08And while it felt good to purge some poison, it's only one side of the coin and some
00:12other metaphors that I also wanted to jam into this introductory blender.
00:15Despite WWE often confounding us at SummerSlam with odd booking choices, uncomfortable moments
00:20and the occasional Jon Stewart, there have been some truly joyous matches in SummerSlam's
00:2533 year history, so sod it, let's give you 20 instead of 10.
00:28Hell, it's the summer, summer, summer time, you earned it.
00:31I'm Adam Haling from PartsFundNone and here are the 20 best matches in SummerSlam history.
00:36But before we start the list, what's your favourite SummerSlam match?
00:39Let us know in the comments, let's get a conversation going.
00:42And then if you do like the video, please do hit subscribe because we subscribe, it's the summer.
00:49So subscribe, hashtag hot subscribe summer.
00:53Number 20, Seth Rollins vs John Cena 2015.
00:57Look, right, yes, Jon Stewart, the funny man from The Daily Show, interfering in a match for both the
01:03WWE and US championships, one of the highest stakes matches in SummerSlam history, that does indeed
01:09blow the fat one.
01:10But first of all, oh boy did the crowd like it through sheer overwhelming desire to see Seth Rollins succeed.
01:15And second, the match that preceded it was 20 minutes of big match, false finish, crowd baiting glory.
01:21Arguably Rollins' finest moment as WWE Champion, dodgy finishes be damned, at least the crowd popped,
01:26as opposed to the confused annoyance that greeted the finish of Taker vs Lesnar in the main event.
01:30Number 19, Sasha Banks vs Charlotte 2016.
01:34If her match next weekend delivers like we expect, Sasha Banks will be one of SummerSlam's all-time
01:38MVPs.
01:39Her match against Asuka last year was Match of the Night.
01:41Her match against Alexa in 2017 is very underrated.
01:45And then there's this, an admittedly messy match featuring a few heart-stopping botches,
01:50but featuring Sasha and Charlotte turning in a hugely compelling spectacle via the medium
01:55of repeatedly nearly killing the boss.
01:57Wrestling shouldn't necessarily feel this dangerous, but when it does, there is an intangible
02:01electricity in the air that makes for a really, really, really compelling match.
02:07Please don't die, Sasha Banks.
02:08Number 18, Brock Lesnar vs CM Punk 2013.
02:12One of the strongest cases that you should be very excited to see The Second City Saint again.
02:16The Best vs The Beast was a huge amount of fun.
02:19Heyman had just turned on Punk and was bringing his new-slash-old boyfriend in to sort out his
02:23clingy ex.
02:24What followed was an enjoyably brutal match, a proper David vs Goliath story,
02:29and boy did Punk not mind getting the Pepsi whipped out of his bones.
02:32Fast-paced, action-packed with lovely moments of storytelling peppered throughout.
02:37Number 17, Christian vs Randy Orton 2011.
02:40Christian and Randall had one of the best rivalries of 2011 and a legit contender for
02:45most underrated rivalry of all time.
02:47They had like five straight matches in a row for the world title and while that seems like
02:51a goddamn nightmare, each match felt different, progressing a wonderful slow burn heel turn
02:57from Captain Charisma, blowing off in this truly excellent no-holds-barred match,
03:01stuffed with callbacks and featuring a closing spot that nearly killed both men dead,
03:06especially Randy.
03:07Oofed ya poor heed.
03:09Number 16, Triple H vs The Rock 1998.
03:12God, 98 was a great year.
03:13Not only was WWE cruising with the best top face and top heel in the industry with Austin
03:17and McMahon, but they spent the year carefully crafting two more top stars, just in case.
03:22Step right up the flagships of DX and The Nation, Triple H and The Rock,
03:25juking it for the IC title in a ladder match at Summerslam 98.
03:29A truly standout ladder match, by the way.
03:31Not so much because it had a bunch of flippy-doos in it,
03:33but because it's a match that, more than most, sold how much it would f***ing hurt to be f***ing hit
03:38with a f***ing ladder.
03:40Great matches elevate both the winner and the loser, and exhibit A right here.
03:47Number 15, Kurt Angle vs Brock Lesnar, 2003.
03:51AKA, all of Adam's Christmas presents come at once.
03:54I love both these men, and 2003 represent the career peak for both.
03:58You could make a case that Brock peaked in the 2010s, but heck,
04:01this amateur endurance hyper-violence is my jam.
04:05That jam.
04:05Everything their Wrestlemania match could and should have been if nerves and necks
04:09hadn't gotten in the way.
04:10The match takes its time getting going, but the ideal heel-face alignment to Brock and Kurt
04:14keep the crowd super invested, before it builds to an admittedly overbooked,
04:18but still raucous finish, featuring an all-time great kickout from Kurt Angle.
04:22Number 14, Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon, 1995.
04:27The best match on the worst Summerslam card in history.
04:30This rematch from WrestleMania X was basically parachuted onto the card in a panic,
04:34just to give the fans something, anything to look forward to.
04:37And it's f***ing gangbusters as well.
04:39It's an early ladder match, so the spots won't pop your mind like they did the crowd watching back then,
04:43but the athleticism on display, especially from Michaels, is timeless.
04:48The moonsault from the ladder still looks good.
04:50The super kick spot is still very cool.
04:52Just a shame that the finish was slightly blown, because Michaels tried to bring the title down
04:58by jumping at it, but it didn't work.
05:00And it didn't work twice.
05:02Gah, look how cross he is.
05:03Number 13, The Undertaker vs Edge, 2008.
05:07Hey, you guys, want to see someone eat just a whole bunch of s***?
05:09Let me introduce you to this Hell in a Cell match, which sees Edge loudly proclaim to
05:13not be afraid of scary Sinclair, Frightener extraordinaire, which is up there with his worst
05:16ever decisions, including the spinner belt design and the sex thing.
05:20Edge gets in a few licks here and there, but otherwise dies a thousand deaths in the most
05:24entertaining ways possible, up to and including getting sent to Christian Hell after the match
05:29is over.
05:30Silly bollocks, but wonderfully inventive bollocks.
05:32And speaking of,
05:33Number 12, CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy, 2009.
05:37The blow off to the sleeper feud of that year, Punk vs Hardy is a tale as old as time,
05:42someone who's wrong but cool about it vs someone who's right but being a dick about it.
05:47WWE may not have always done right by CM Punk World Heavyweight Champion,
05:51but they dedicate the main event of SummerSlam to his and Hardy's excellent work and they earn it.
05:57The swanton through the announce table is an all-time great TLC spot.
06:00And other spots like the superplex onto the ladder are equally brutal.
06:03Hardy has an amazing legacy of SummerSlam ladder matches.
06:06His bout against RVD in 2001 also rules.
06:09Plus one more that we'll get to in a little bit, ooh cheeky.
06:13Number 11, Bret Hart vs Mr Perfect, 1991.
06:17The Intercontinental title has an illustrious partnership with SummerSlam.
06:20The first ever SummerSlam saw the shocking dethroning of the Honky Tonk Man by the Ultimate Warrior.
06:25Rollins vs Ziggler in 2018 was great.
06:27Triple H vs The Rock, HBK Razor.
06:30And then there's this, only the second best match for the summertime strap,
06:35Hitman and Perfect, putting on a goddamn clinic.
06:38Hugely athletic, much quicker than you remember old wrestling being,
06:42in front of a rabid crowd with the final beautiful sharpshooter sequence,
06:46cementing Hart as the best technician of his generation.
06:50Number 10, Daniel Bryan vs John Cena, 2013.
06:54Big match, big feels.
06:55In 1993, the original plan was for Hulk Hogan to put over Bret Hart, but he refused to do the job.
07:0120 years later, we finally got that passing of the torch.
07:05Although it was immediately taken away because God is Dead and Vince killed him.
07:09A fast-paced, history-stuffed crowd-pleaser.
07:11Obviously, the GOAT is the story here, but all the credit in the world to John Cena for
07:15not only doing the job the Hulkster wouldn't, but making Daniel Bryan look every inches equal
07:20in the job, down to the clean-as-a-she ending.
07:22The post-match was predictable as hell, but the best kind of outrage swerve,
07:26providing a low to balance this match's incredible high.
07:33Number 9, Kurt Angle vs Steve Austin, 2001.
07:37How good does a match have to be to make a crappy DQ finish palatable?
07:41This good, friends.
07:42An argument could be made that this is Austin's best match to not feature a certain people's champion,
07:47and Kurt is a f***ing warrior here.
07:50Kicking out of multiple stunners, dragging Austin by his ankle into the ring, into an ankle lock,
07:55his face a crimson mask, hitting his beautiful moonsault, all cooled by JR and Heyman.
08:01It's just perfection.
08:02The DQ finish is frustrating, yes, by design, but at least Austin really had to work to get
08:08DQ'd, and that elevates it from a wait-it's-over outrage to a story of a coward unable to beat his
08:15competitor, going into a frenzy and taking the only way out that's left to him. It's joyous stuff.
08:20Number 8, Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio, 2002.
08:24I love Kurt Angle so much, so much you guys, so much.
08:29Summerslam 2002 is the greatest Summerslam of all time, don't you dare disagree,
08:33but the bar was set ludicrously high by the opening match, Angle vs the PPV debuting Rey Mysterio.
08:40This match is so fast, so fun, so fluid, the two men have chemistry the likes of which most
08:44wrestlers can only dream of having. It's the textbook example of how to elevate a star in defeat.
08:50The energy of the match cannot be done justice by just reeling off a list of spots. It's a
08:55bell-to-bell must-watch.
08:57Number 7, TLC won 2000.
08:59Oh, what a silly match. The first official tender loving care match in WWE history,
09:04and a centrepiece to the greatest period of tag team wrestling that WWE's ever seen.
09:08The Dudleys, the Hardys and Edge and Christian battle in a match destined to be overlooked thanks
09:13to TLC2 existing, but this match is a perfectly formed exercise in breathless escalation and
09:18incredibly satisfying bumps. A chaotic carousel of carnage where everyone gets a chance to shine
09:24in the most eye-watering way possible. Jeff crashes and burns. Bubba crashes and burns.
09:29Matt disappears into a pair of tables. Just brilliant stuff, loudly embraced by a very lucky capacity crowd.
09:36Number 6, Braun Strowman vs Samoa Joe vs Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar 2017.
09:412017. Oh, what a silly match. A cube of hosses going bollock for leather in a Saturday morning
09:47cartoon that never stops, never stopping. It's a high concept match that lives up to its own
09:51Looney Tunes existence, reminding us why WWE is a bat-sh** company for not currently having
09:57Braun Strowman in it. He is a terrifying force in a match made up entirely of terrifying forces.
10:03At one point, he just f***ing beefs an announcer's chair at the Samoan Joe's when he's not busy
10:08slamming Lesnar through tables. It is a huge amount of entertaining nonsense.
10:15Number 5, Bret Hart vs Owen Hart 1994. The only Meltzer 5-star rated match in SummerSlam history,
10:22and while it might not be quite that good, it's close. And that's saying something.
10:27Owen and Bret made nothing but magic when they worked together, to the point where they could
10:31even draw giant reactions out of WWE's rubbish, who-can-escape first version of cage matches.
10:36Turns out, the key is speed, as Owen and Bret repeatedly hurl themselves at the cage door,
10:42with the kind of urgency that can't help but infect the crowd with the same energy.
10:46Number 4, AJ Styles vs John Cena 2016.
10:502016 SummerSlam will always have a place in my heart, as I was in the crowd for it. And man,
10:55I cannot tell you how good this match was live. It's genuinely a match so good that it pretty much
11:00destroyed its own pay-per-view. Nothing could follow it, with the explosion of joy when the
11:05right guy won, knocking as flatter than the earth might be. I'm just saying, there's some stuff about
11:11it, that's all. It's the best kind of big match, where the groundwork builds to the kickouts, and the
11:16kickouts are really allowed to matter. Sheer excellence. And speaking of… Number 3, Bret Hart vs The British
11:24Bulldog 1992. A match that we Brits truly hold precious. A diamond main event on a show filled
11:30with rough. Repo Man vs Crush anyone? Anyone? But when you have a match this good in front of
11:36one of history's loudest crowds, no other match on the card mattered. Well paced, technically seamless,
11:42much is made of Hitman's ability to walk Davey Boy through it. But Bulldog more than carries his end,
11:46and the whole thing is as crisp as a new bill, and that takes two. It's filled with bursts of energy,
11:52power, crowd-stopping action. It's also one of Heenan's best turns on commentary. It's just
11:57wonderful stuff. Although, f**k the guys with the air horns. F**k them. Number 2,
12:02Triple H vs Shawn Michaels 2002. No other match makes the point that Shawn Michaels was a wrestling
12:09genius. His first match back after four years away from the ring, and it's like he never missed a day,
12:14crafting a seamless, violent, creative and bloody masterpiece with his best friend turned,
12:19bitter enemy, Triple H. Nearly half an hour in length, but never feeling indulgent, which is
12:24more than could be said for some of the matches in this feud. It is superb. Everyone was happy to
12:29see Shawn. Everyone was happy to see that he could go better than ever. Everyone hated Triple H. The
12:34two pretty much nailed every spot in the match that could have been filled with shortcuts to protect
12:38Michaels, but no shortcuts were taken. We won't forget you. And number 1, John Cena vs Brock Lesnar 2014.
12:47LOL. Alright, shut up. Listen. This isn't the greatest match in Summerslam history to anyone,
12:52probably, except for me. But I wrote this bastard. It's my rules. I love this match so much. It is so
12:59shocking. It is so surprising. It is so funny. It's essentially the beginning of John Cena's
13:04departure to the midcard where, from 2015 onwards, he puts in one of the greatest wrestling runs of all
13:10time. And watching Big Match John get f***ing drubbed from bell to bell, every single equally
13:16unbelievable moment just made me laugh and clap until my hands were sore when I watched it. And
13:21it's hard to describe it properly, but when this happened, the year this happened, Suplex City was
13:27not a thing. Cena was still the guy. This should not have happened, but it did. And it's one of those few,
13:33those desperately few times, where the phrase, anything can happen in the WWE, actually rings
13:39true. I love this match. I'm going to go watch it again. Look at Cena fly. Whee! Look at him die.
