00:00Good evening, friends.
00:11This is your host to welcome you through the creaking door into the inner sanctum.
00:18Come in, come in. I've been reading my fan mail.
00:21Huh? Oh, sure, I get lots of it.
00:25Delivered in a hearth every morning.
00:28One lonely heart writes,
00:30Despite your sinister voice, you strike me as a fine gentleman in a homebody.
00:36I am companionable, good-natured, unmarried, and I've been hardly dead a year.
00:42Won't you please exchange photographs, signed, lonesome.
00:49Did somebody say the lady spooked out of turn?
00:57Ha, ha.
01:03Tonight's inner sanctum mystery, The Devil's Fortune, was written by John Robert and stars Carl Swanson in the role of Tracy with Charles Irving as McNamara.
01:14And now for tonight's chaos.
01:21In the deep hinterland of Mexico, on the ground level over a mine shaft,
01:27a ceremony is being performed by a frightened group of men.
01:31A ceremony of fear.
01:34Drums beat.
01:35And a roaring fire licks at the night sky.
01:40Underground in the mine called El Fortuna Diablo, The Devil's Fortune,
01:46floodwaters rise slowly to choke off all life in the shaft.
01:51Clinging to the elevation of a ledge, trapped and at bay,
01:55with the waters lapping at his ankles, is a young man.
01:58His expression is desperate, as he fires a gun into the subterranean shadows at an unseen target.
02:06Give me a break, Mac. I've got a right to live.
02:09You're wasting bullets, Tracy.
02:11You better come out of your hands up or drown.
02:15I'm waiting just around the air.
02:18Yeah, well, your gun talks ready to shoot me down.
02:20Don't wait.
02:24Take all the time you need making up your mind, Tracy.
02:29Choose the way you want to die.
02:36Choose the way I want to die.
02:39Mac will get me even if it costs him his own life.
02:43Mac happened to be in a furnished room across the border in El Paso.
02:47I came out of a stupor one morning, opened my eyes blarily,
02:52and there was Big Mac sitting on a chair.
02:57Hey, who are you, mister?
02:59Never mind, kid.
03:00Right now, you're more interested in the third man in the room.
03:04Third man?
03:05Over there, propped in the corner, with a knife stuck in his chest.
03:10What?
03:11Recognize him?
03:13Yeah, sure.
03:15Coombs.
03:15We were making the rounds together last night.
03:20Who killed him?
03:22You did.
03:23What?
03:23Check the knife.
03:25See if it's yours.
03:27I'll give you the details, kid.
03:30At about 2 a.m., you got into a quarrel with Coombs outside the Hotel Navajo.
03:35I happened to be around, taking it all in.
03:38You're a mining engineer, but you haven't worked in a year.
03:42You were stewing over your hard luck.
03:45You took it out on Coombs.
03:47It's hard to believe it.
03:49Take the corpse's pulse, and then believe it.
03:53You blacked out, and I hustled you both up here.
03:57Why?
03:58To give you a choice.
04:00Either I call the cops, or the three of us go for a ride.
04:04We'll dump Coombs somewhere, and then the two of us push on into the interior of Mexico.
04:10Is it a deal?
04:12Why are you helping me?
04:14What's in it for you, Mr., uh...
04:16McNamara?
04:18You're a crack mine engineer.
04:21I need a crack mine engineer that I can trust.
04:25Your knife in Coombs means I can trust you anytime, anywhere.
04:38We dumped Coombs, and two days later, we were 500 miles inside Mexico.
04:45Mac?
04:45Yeah?
04:46I've been thinking.
04:48That story that you palmed off on me about Coombs, you stuck that knife in him.
04:53Well, maybe.
04:57But you'll never be able to prove it now.
05:00Mac, you're crazy.
05:01And you're soft.
05:02Soft and sentimental.
05:04The world's an anthill.
05:05Knifing Coombs is like stepping on an ant.
05:08Get tough, Tracy.
05:09Think big.
05:10How big?
05:13This big.
05:15I've got a map here.
05:19Read off the name.
05:20El Fortuno Diablo.
05:24An abandoned gold mine just outside a native village called Alicante.
05:27All boxed in and boarded up.
05:29Hasn't been worked in 20 years.
05:30A fortune's been laying around, begging for takers.
05:33Well, why hasn't anybody worked a mine?
05:35Fright.
05:36They're all petrified with fright.
05:38From the owner, a chump named Parento, right on down the line to everybody in town.
05:43There's a legend about the mine that scared them.
05:47The devil is supposed to make his headquarters there.
05:52The map is spotted with blood.
05:55Whose blood is that, Mac?
05:57The chump who had the map previous to me.
06:00Called himself Klondike.
06:01He lay there, drooling over the map, whispering to himself about El Fortuno Diablo.
06:09Week in and week out, month after month, I listened to Klondike whispering to himself.
06:15Lay there?
06:17Lay where, Mac?
06:19I had to break his hand open to get the map out of his finger.
06:23Where were you, Mac?
06:25I'll tell you sometime, Tracy.
06:32Sometime when you get out of line, maybe you'll wish I hadn't told you.
06:42We reached Alicante, bleak, backward village,
06:47where civilization came trickling in slowly by donkey cart over narrow mountain passes.
06:52From here on, kid, watch me operate.
06:55How are you going to get El Fortuno Diablo?
06:57Steal it.
06:58We steal the mine from a Senor Parento, that owner I told you about.
07:03It's all fixed.
07:04Tonight, Parento's being told the hood who is off the mine,
07:07and that he's a dope not to cut me in as a partner
07:09and start operating El Fortuno Diablo full blast.
07:13Who's telling all this to Parento?
07:15The one guy he'll listen to and believe.
07:18What passes for the village wise man in these parts?
07:23A joker named Montesano.
07:25Montesano has this town organized,
07:28like Al Capone used to operate in Cicero.
07:31Everybody's scared not to listen to Montesano.
07:34But why will Montesano play ball with you?
07:37A gun in his ribs and 500 bucks in his palm.
07:41Just you watch how Montesano plays ball.
07:43I watched Montesano bat a home run for McNamara.
07:51We were in a room with Montesano, Parento,
07:54and a sharp-nosed fellow named Salvador.
07:57Salvador acted as a sort of bodyguard, advisor,
08:01and local technical expert to Parento.
08:03You will work the mine, Parento,
08:07you and the Senor McNamara.
08:10Boy, they're legenda del diablo.
08:11The curse is no more.
08:14When your father was killed,
08:16he put the 20-year curse on El Fortuno Diablo.
08:20And now the time is over.
08:22But the mine, they will not work the mine.
08:26In all Alicante, I can find nobody to work the mine.
08:28You will tell everybody in Alicante
08:31and in the mountains that Montesano say
08:35it is good to work the mine.
08:38Machinery trickled in by cart over the mountain passes.
08:46Fearful workers grumblingly responded to Montesano's call.
08:50The shafts were rebuilt.
08:52The mine began operating.
08:55At the end of the first week,
08:56McNamara played his trump card.
08:59He stole the mine.
09:00It was Sunday.
09:04It's the day of.
09:05Parento and his man, Salvador,
09:07had just left a conference with Mac.
09:09Mac was laughing.
09:11The kind of laugh that meant he was
09:12grinding his heels into an anthill again.
09:17Happy days, Tracy.
09:19You've pushed your master plan another foot forward, huh?
09:22Oh, my old Tracy.
09:24Ah, take a gander at this.
09:26It's a contract for purchase.
09:28For a dollar and other valuable considerations,
09:31Parento signs the whole mine over to Mr. McNamara.
09:34Parento signed this?
09:35Yeah, he did.
09:36But he thought he was signing a requisition for supplies
09:39from Tampico.
09:42I pulled the old document switch on him.
09:45Mac, that's an outright steal.
09:47Parento will call you a liar and a thief.
09:50He'll never get that chance, Tracy.
09:53Mac, what are you up to with Parento?
09:55Well, Parento and his stooge, Salvador,
09:58have just gone into the mine for an administrative look around.
10:03At my suggestion.
10:06And Tracy, I've got a hunch
10:08they're going to meet up with that El Diablo.
10:13Mac, what have you done?
10:16Those other valuable considerations I gave Parento,
10:20they were a couple of lunchboxes
10:21packed nice and appetizing with chicken sandwiches
10:24and hot drinks.
10:26In just one minute,
10:28I'm going to pull the steam whistle cord
10:30so that Parento and Salvador
10:32get the idea that it's noontime
10:35and they're hungry.
10:37Mm-hmm.
10:38Minutes up.
10:41Mac, what's the connection?
10:43What have lunchboxes got...
10:45Mac!
10:48Now you're smartening up, kid.
10:50The box is open on a wire like a booby trap.
10:53Reach for a sandwich and smoke gets in your eyes.
10:57Mac, I'm not going to let you blow up...
10:59Praise, chump.
11:01This is a gun in your ribs.
11:03If you're itching to throw in with Parento and Salvador...
11:07Mac!
11:14Parento and Salvador got hungry.
11:19Now we're really in the mining business, Tracy.
11:22Big.
11:23Big.
11:23When the bodies came out of El Fortuno Diablo,
11:42Mac and I were out walking.
11:45The idea was the Sunday explosions
11:47happened mysteriously while we were away.
11:50That night at the hospital,
11:51I talked to the local doc.
11:52Yeah, poor Parento.
11:55We didn't even find enough of him
11:56to make a decent burial.
11:58Oh.
11:59Blown to death.
12:01And Salvador?
12:02Well, with Salvador,
12:03it was a miracle, Senor Tracy.
12:06Salvador lives,
12:07but not his face.
12:10Now, when the bandages come off one day,
12:11it will not be the face of the Salvador we knew.
12:16Just like his mine,
12:17poor Salvador left his face behind him
12:20in El Fortuno Diablo.
12:24Parento blown to bits
12:26and Salvador with his head swathed in bandages.
12:30Mac Namara's master plan was going great.
12:34Now the mine worked full blast
12:36around the clock, day and night.
12:38Montesano was on hand when needed,
12:40telling everybody the hex was off,
12:42keeping the men in line for Mac.
12:44The men were working overtime,
12:47but so was the accident emergency bell
12:49connecting the shaft to the shack we supervised from.
12:52The bell meant an injury, or worse.
12:55Tracy, if it's another casualty,
12:56I'll pry somebody in oil.
12:58We're running a mining operation,
12:59not a hospital.
13:01It wasn't a hospital case this time.
13:04It was a case for the coroner.
13:05In the mine shaft,
13:08face upward,
13:10with his eyes fixed and unwinking,
13:12lay a miner,
13:14Miguelito.
13:15All of us saw the senores Miguelito.
13:16He let out a cry and dropped to the ground.
13:19I live a thousand años
13:20and I never forget Miguelito's cry.
13:23What killed him, Tracy?
13:24Well, nothing apparent, Mac.
13:28No wound, nothing.
13:31Shock, I'd say,
13:32from the look on his face.
13:33It was El Diablo.
13:34El Diablo come before Miguelito.
13:36His face is black
13:37and standing from the side of his head,
13:39I see horns.
13:40Not that line of talk, Manoelo.
13:41You're scaring the men.
13:43The scared men don't mind gold.
13:45Señor Magna Mare,
13:46is it true?
13:47It was the devil who come before Miguelito.
13:49Si.
13:50Up there to the ground.
13:52El Diablo leave his footprints.
13:53We looked
13:55and there,
13:58clearly defined in the soft dirt,
14:00was a print.
14:02A hoof print.
14:04Mac, it's a hoof.
14:05It's a cloven hoof.
14:07Tracy, so help me
14:08if you blow your top
14:09in front of the men.
14:11Miguelito had a heart attack, man.
14:13He was just a kid,
14:14not up to being a miner.
14:16Now everybody back to her.
14:18The men went back
14:23to mining for gold.
14:25And the emergency bell
14:28kept ringing.
14:30Tracy.
14:31Yes?
14:32Go fetch that Alicante wise man.
14:35Tell Montesano
14:35the men need another spiel
14:37about how the devil
14:38has called it quits
14:39and the hoodoo's off the mine.
14:40Has the devil called quits, Mac?
14:43Tracy, you blow your top
14:44and I'll blow your head off.
14:46I'm here to mine gold
14:48if I have to kill
14:50every mother's son of you
14:51and work to mine myself.
14:52How do you explain
14:55the four murdered men then?
14:57Bad hearts,
14:58the 24-hour shift.
15:00Maybe the men got to brawling
15:02among themselves down there.
15:03It's easier to blame
15:04a killing on the devil
15:05than face a murder rap.
15:08Now what?
15:10That's the fire bell.
15:11Fire, Mac.
15:12Another omen of disaster.
15:14Your gold mine
15:15is going up in smoke.
15:23Mine was a raging inferno.
15:26Mac ran around
15:27like a wild man
15:28barking orders
15:29working with superhuman energy.
15:30Hey, get that equipment going.
15:33Beat the fireman
15:34and I'll double everybody's pay.
15:35Hey, I still have a hand.
15:36You let the fire
15:37get out of control
15:38and lose the mine
15:39and I'll sing
15:40every living one of you
15:42a fairway lullaby with it.
15:43Mac was threatening them
15:48with a sample
15:48submachine gun spray.
15:50He meant mass murder
15:52and the men knew it.
15:53Yeah, you're slowing up now.
15:55Maybe a little music
15:56will give you more inspiration.
16:00It was an impossible task,
16:03but the men got the fire out.
16:04Tracy.
16:11Yes?
16:12About those hook prints
16:14around the mine,
16:15the cloven hook.
16:18I've been giving it
16:19a lot of thought.
16:20I thought those things
16:21didn't bother you.
16:22Not like they bother you,
16:24chump.
16:25They bother me
16:26another way.
16:26To me,
16:27it's a gimmick
16:27and I get nervous
16:28if I can't figure out
16:29how a gimmick operates.
16:31A gimmick?
16:31I don't get you.
16:32We'll take a walk tonight,
16:34the two of us,
16:36and I'll show you
16:37what I figured out.
16:40I've been playing
16:41timekeeper to the devil
16:42for a week now,
16:44clocking him in
16:45and clocking him out.
16:47We took that walk
16:52with a wind
16:54at our back.
16:55We hauled up
16:56outside a deserted mud house
16:58located halfway
17:00between El Fortuna Diablo
17:02and the town.
17:03According to my timepiece,
17:05the devil is
17:06two minutes late.
17:08Mac, you're not making sense.
17:09Shh.
17:11There.
17:12Now,
17:13have yourself
17:14a look at the devil,
17:16Tracy.
17:17Look.
17:17Shh.
17:20The devil was walking
17:22stealthily
17:23toward the door
17:23of the mud house.
17:25He looked just like
17:26Manuelo had described him,
17:28black from head to foot,
17:30horns rising
17:30from his skull
17:31and feet formed
17:33into hooves.
17:34We watched him
17:35and he came after me.
17:38I ran in panic
17:39into the mine.
17:40Here,
17:41the track,
17:43the waters are rising,
17:44Mac's around an L
17:46somewhere in the tunnel
17:47waiting in ambush
17:49and I have got a choice.
17:52Drown
17:52and beat Mac's
17:53bullets head on.
17:54They see your time's
17:56running out.
17:57Mac,
17:57I've got a right to live.
17:58You laughed to Manuelo
18:00when he spread the word.
18:02I told you I came here
18:03to mine,
18:04and you laughed to that
18:06well.
18:06There isn't any gold.
18:08I worked my straps
18:09free at Meadowbrook
18:10in strangle
18:11Clown
18:11to get that map.
18:13I shot up
18:14a Kansas bank
18:15to get the money
18:16to buy
18:16mining equipment.
18:18All that
18:19so I got mine gold.
18:21You hear it,
18:22Tracy?
18:22Mine gold!
18:25Mac!
18:26What happened, Mac?
18:28We hit you, Tracy.
18:31You got me.
18:32God, liar!
18:34I didn't even fire.
18:35It's a trick.
18:36It's a trick
18:37to lure me out.
18:38Mac shot into the air
18:39to confuse me.
18:40He's there
18:41behind an L
18:42where I can't see him
18:43in ambush.
18:44Mac!
18:46Mac!
18:46He cannot hear you,
18:49Sr. Tracy.
18:50He?
18:51Mac.
18:53He's there.
18:54Empty apples.
18:58It's the devil
18:59standing there.
19:00Like Manuero
19:01described him,
19:02black from
19:02head to floor
19:04with horns
19:04rising from his skull.
19:07How many devils
19:08are there around here?
19:09First Montesano,
19:11now you.
19:12Montesano
19:13is a faker.
19:15He sees
19:15trivial.
19:16He do many things.
19:18Kill many men.
19:20I have come
19:21to know,
19:22Sr.
19:23that there is
19:24no Diablos.
19:26No devil?
19:27You're not
19:28standing there,
19:28huh?
19:30But I am
19:31real, Sr.
19:33Behind this
19:34face,
19:35I am
19:36Parento.
19:38Parento?
19:40They couldn't
19:40even find
19:42enough of you
19:42for a decent
19:43burial.
19:44For Salvador
19:45they could
19:45not find.
19:47In the hospital
19:48the doctor
19:48agreed that
19:49Parento
19:49will drive
19:50the devil
19:50from El
19:51Portuno
19:51Diablo.
19:53And the
19:53police agree
19:54Parento
19:55will be
19:55their deputy.
19:57You
19:57killed
19:59Montesano
19:59and Mac
20:00DeMaria?
20:01Si,
20:01Sr.
20:06What is
20:07so funny,
20:07Sr.?
20:08Mac
20:08DeMaria.
20:09I was
20:11thinking of
20:11Mac's
20:12master
20:12plans.
20:16He never
20:17figured that
20:18booby trap
20:19he planted
20:19in your
20:20lunchbox
20:20would blow
20:21up in
20:22his face.
20:23A porter
20:33in a
20:33gold
20:34buying
20:34service
20:35once
20:35swept
20:35this
20:35crack
20:36into
20:36a
