Wildfire in Portugal paints sky orange as flames rage

A wildfire burning through central Portugal lit up the night sky in hues of orange and red as flames swept across late Aug. 14, 2025. So far this year about 52,000 hectares (200 square miles), or 0.6 percent of Portugal's total area, have burned, exceeding the 2006-2024 average for the same period by about 10,000 hectares, according to the European Forest Fire Information System. Scientists say the Mediterranean region's hotter, drier summers put it at a high risk of wildfires.
