Igor Babuschkin, a founding member of Elon Musk’s xAI, announced Wednesday that he is leaving the artificial intelligence startup to launch his own venture firm, according to CNBC. Babuschkin Ventures will focus on AI safety research and investments in AI and agentic systems “that advance humanity and unlock the mysteries of our universe.” A former Google DeepMind engineer and OpenAI staffer, Babuschkin said he helped build xAI’s engineering teams, developed the Memphis supercluster, and shipped frontier models at record speed. Babuschkin said he and Musk shared concerns over powerful AI’s risks and the goal of using it for good. Musk thanked Babuschkin in a post on X for helping build xAI and said the company wouldn’t exist without him.
