00:00The two missing are Julian Buckwall, 23, and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Caroline Watsa.
00:18They seem to have vanished into thin air.
00:23Just went out for a nice picnic and never came back.
00:27No leads and no trace of them.
00:34A satanic note has been found by the parents urging them not to contact the police or harm will come to their children.
00:42No comment. No comment.
00:43To have a young couple with no criminal history go missing with links to a satanic cult, that was one out of the box.
01:04Our absolute ultimate goal is to find them as quickly as possible and safe.
01:08To be continued...
01:36By the time we got involved they'd been missing for two days. Julian Buckwalder and Carolyn Watson, two teens, reported by the family, indicated they'd gone on a picnic and that they'd gone missing from there.
01:52So we had to backtrack from that last location where they were seen and work out the sequence of events that followed from there on.
01:58Initially we didn't have any leads, but to whether they had come to harm was probably not at the forefront of our mind at the time. It was more that we thought that they had disappeared.
02:11We all jumped into the cars, attended both Carolyn's house and Julian's house to speak to the parents.
02:19When we attended Carolyn's place, we spoke to Carolyn's mother, Jeanette, and Carolyn's father, Chris, and they were beside themselves.
02:30They were beside themselves with fear and concern and they were looking for us for answers.
02:36The missing couple, they had very limited ways of communication, so no phones, no credit cards.
02:42In policing terminology, that's the bread and butter that we require to locate people who go missing or who don't want to be found.
02:55My name's David Wojwood and I was a junior reporter at the time of this kidnapping case.
03:01We were waking up to new details every day on the radio, news bulletins at night.
03:06Look, they were wall-to-wall coverage with this story.
03:08This wasn't a normal missing persons case.
03:11It was getting more bizarre by the day.
03:17Again, heading to the oddity of this whole investigation, someone had taken the left shoe of every pair of shoes that was on the porch.
03:24This had really thrown another element into this case and for one, it was absolutely baffling police.
03:30They had no idea what was going on and it was certainly alarming the community as well.
03:34Not something I'd ever come across before, unless it was a one-legged bandit who needed that shoe.
03:48Caroline was quite a religious young girl, same with her family and Julian would have been as well, being part of the church.
03:54Julian had asked Caroline's parents for permission to take her on a picnic and I believe the church as well.
04:02The pastor told us of Julian wanting to marry Caroline as soon as she finished Year 12 and that Caroline was hopeful to enter university.
04:11So that was where we may have started having some thoughts that perhaps he had convinced her to let's run away together.
04:18When we attended Julian's parents' place, we mainly dealt with Julian's mother, Siglindy, and she probably seemed to me to have a little bit of knowledge about the situation than the Watson family.
04:39She was indicating all these places that we should search on the property.
04:45So the property in Grand Ridge Road is over 200 acres.
04:48It's a huge, huge area, huge ground area to cover.
04:51Hence the reason we got the police helicopter.
04:53This is incredibly rugged terrain. If you don't know it, it's very easy to get lost.
05:03You need some form of knowledge of that region to actually survive out there.
05:10We went very large, very loud with the media to try and get all the descriptions and the information out around the car and around Julian and around Caroline.
05:19Authorities are asking the public if they've seen a Nissan gold four-wheel drive.
05:24Please contact the hotline below if you've seen this vehicle with these plates or if you have any information about the couple.
05:30I saw this same car leaving the gas station on Dover Avenue yesterday afternoon.
05:36I'm pretty sure this car was parked in front of our house early this morning.
05:40I hope that's helpful.
05:42We continued investigating those calls and spoke to the parties that had made the information reports.
05:49We had a lot of days there where we were following leads that were not correct.
05:55So as each day passed, it got worse.
05:59I guess you could say as an investigating team, our concerns grew higher.
06:04A satanic cult has kidnapped the two local teens.
06:10A letter with satanic symbols was found with a warning to keep away or harm will come to the hostages.
06:17So the mother of Julian, she found a note in a turpentine box on a gate in their property.
06:25It was a satanic type note. It had a, what they call an order of nine angles symbol on it.
06:31It identified that they'd been taken against their will and not to report it to the police and that harm was going to come to them.
06:38This very quickly changed this case from a missing persons case to perhaps something far more sinister.
06:45Julian's mother was constantly wanting to know updates, but there was just something odd around her emotions compared to the Watson family's emotions.
06:53When we spoke with Carolyn's parents, they identified that they had received a note as well.
06:58It was of the same kind, the same emblem as the note that was located on the Buckwall property.
07:05This note indicated it was directed to the father of Carolyn, Christopher Watson, telling him to mind his own business and do not contact the police.
07:15Tell everyone they are on holiday. Don't you dare talk to the cops again and you'll get your kids back.
07:22S**t us again and you will never see them again because we'll f**k the girl to death and burn her alive and the bloody boy will really enjoy to torture and sacrifice.
07:35This is your last warning.
07:42Behind the scenes, they were certainly preparing for the worst and police may not have been admitting it publicly, but they were certainly now treating this much more of a retrieval mission rather than a search and rescue.
07:54Thanks Detective Sergeant.
07:58So come the 11th, they'd been missing for seven days, which was a long time.
08:03Again, each day added to the concern and most definitely added to the concern of the parents and we had nothing.
08:10We still had no evidence as to where they were, no clues, no further information.
08:15So we were a bit of a standstill.
08:17And then we received a call.
08:27It was riveting, a shocking moment.
08:29Sounds good.
08:30Thanks Mel.
08:31Cheers.
08:32Good morning, Buckham Police.
08:44Ray Moulin speaking.
08:45So I got the call at about 10 past 7pm at night.
08:51I'd just finished tea.
08:53A farmer had located two missing people.
08:57One was a 22-year-old male and one was a 17-year-old female.
09:02I was told that they'd been missing for eight days from home and I was told that they were possibly abducted.
09:08When I first heard this story, I was sceptical.
09:18I was not convinced that the details given to me were adding up.
09:23Kidnapping is very rare in Buckham.
09:25I mean, I've been here for 22 years.
09:27I never had a kidnapping.
09:29But I think Australia is blessed in that way in relation to those serious crimes.
09:35So, in relation to where this case sits in my career, it's one of the strangest.
10:02We got information from the local policeman at Buckham that he'd been contacted by a local resident,
10:07that the two had come out of the bush and been taken to the Buckham Police Station.
10:13All right. I'll see you soon. Bye-bye.
10:15It was a number of hours for us to get down to the Buckham area.
10:25When we got there, I believe it was about 11.30 at night.
10:28As the lead investigator, I came up with a plan before we got there about who was to do what.
10:32So, what we needed to know at that time is who these kidnappers were.
10:37We then separated both Julian and Carolyn, put them both into interview rooms,
10:41and we actually recorded their statements.
10:44My full name is Carolyn Louise Watson.
10:48I'm 17 years of age.
10:50I'm making the statement of my own free will.
10:53Julian picked me up at around 10 a.m. from my home address in Disney Sun Patrol.
10:59We'd arranged a week prior to go on a picnic at a waterfall on his property at 1353 Grand Ridge Road, Ballora.
11:08Julian was driving and I was in the front passenger seat.
11:12Julian then drove us to the paddock where the deer were.
11:16The car had barely started moving when I saw the deer move.
11:21Julian made a comment that it's as if someone was there that smoked the deer.
11:26We then drove down the hill a bit further.
11:29Julian saw a deer on the side of the path that had been skinned so he got out of the car.
11:34He left the car running.
11:38He said that he was going to check if anything was around the corner.
11:56I tried looking up once but my head was pushed down.
12:07He then taped around my eyes and ears and wrapped the tape around behind my head under my ponytail.
12:17It felt like someone got into the passenger seat as the passenger seat moved.
12:22But I'm not too sure.
12:26The male got in the driver's seat and drove off.
12:29The male got out on the wagon called a rope.
12:30It came to Broadway where I knew she had a pony heard
12:50the waited, so he went over the gate.
12:53She was aware that she was in Julian's car
13:02because she didn't know where Julian was.
13:05We were driving on a gravel road for a while.
13:11I might have passed out during it,
13:15but it's very hot under the blanket.
13:23I heard him pick up a shovel and dig a hole.
13:31I didn't see any of this.
13:40She's bound, she's tired.
13:42Her thoughts would have been going through her head.
13:44She thought she was going to be murdered or raped.
13:46She just didn't know what was going to happen to her.
13:53And the next thing she knows is that this person has come closer to her
13:56and then started cutting her clothes off.
14:01She commenced to pray, and she prayed out loud.
14:14Some time passed, and the next thing she knew,
14:16she could hear Julian's voice, very muffled, very quiet.
14:19And she said, Julian, is that you?
14:22And Julian said, is that you, Carolyn?
14:26And the next thing she knew,
14:28he was wriggling himself towards her
14:30as they both laid on the ground.
14:34Yes, they've just freed themselves.
14:37They've looked around.
14:38They appreciate they're in the middle of nowhere.
14:40They didn't know where the kidnappers were.
14:42So their intention at that time was to get out of there.
14:45They've only got a sleeping bag and no clothes, no shoes.
14:49They had to find a way out.
14:54We were very excited that they'd been found alive,
14:56but they had the clearly obvious sunburn and blistering
15:00as a result of exposure to the sun.
15:02And you could feel the pain already
15:05just by how much that would have hurt.
15:06So by the next morning,
15:17we needed to get out to the scene where they stated
15:20that they'd been taken to
15:22and where their clothes had been cut off.
15:24So we needed them to assist us in finding that location.
15:30We needed to deal in evidence and facts.
15:34Mine is like a parachute.
15:35It doesn't work unless it's open.
15:37And that's how we went into this investigation.
15:42So police have taken Julian back out to this site.
15:45And what they very quickly discovered was that
15:48there were a number of holes with buried evidence.
15:52Some of the things we located in these holes were pieces of clothing, ropes.
15:58But of significance was another note.
16:01Same as the two notes that we'd already recovered
16:03with this tanning coal overtones.
16:06Julian was very clear in his statement that he went back
16:09to the scene whilst they were in the bush to retrieve the clothes
16:13and put them into a backpack, which he then took and met up with Carolyn again.
16:17So he's somehow been able to find all the pieces, put them back together with safety pins.
16:22The police started asking that very obvious question.
16:26Why had this kidnapper then gone to the trouble of burying all of those items?
16:32It just wasn't adding up.
16:33The creek bed, if you dug a hole, it covered up pretty much quickly.
16:37So no one would ever have been able to find that there was a hole there for that particular item.
16:40But Julian knew where it was and he pulled it out from there.
16:43And that is when this story has very quickly started to unravel.
16:49I was quite certain that Julian had something to do with this investigation
16:54and he'd become a suspect at this point.
17:14I went for a bit of a walk around the skirts of the crime scene.
17:19I noticed some reeds and wattles that were probably two or three metres high
17:28and they looked a bit damaged and a little bit odd from the way they were standing.
17:34Something was a bit off.
17:36I waded through the reeds and the wattles and I located a gold-coloured four-wheel drive secreted
17:42in the bush about five metres off the track.
17:46To find that car in the bush, that was just the smoking gun for us.
17:52When Julian went back to retrieve the clothes, he didn't see the car.
17:59It was found parked just 20 metres or so away from where those holes had been dug.
18:06Police started questioning almost immediately, why was the car there?
18:11Apparently, a kidnapper had taken these two.
18:15He had bound them and dumped them and then parked the car just 20 metres away.
18:19I mean, it wasn't adding up at the time.
18:22The whole timeline in this case was out of whack.
18:25It was pointed out to him that some of the inconsistencies of his statements
18:28and the things that we'd located at the scene indicated that he wasn't telling the truth.
18:32I thought, he's got a lot of questions to answer now.
18:38Detective Sergeant Rod Arthur and I pulled Carolyn aside and had a conversation with her.
18:43I specifically recall asking her whether Julian could have been involved further in the vending side of this incident.
18:50And she thought it through and said that the person who drove Julian's car drove it exactly like Julian.
18:57And I believe it was a manual car, which, you know, manual vehicles all have, you know, different nuances of how you would drive it.
19:03And that someone kept tapping her on the head from the driver's seat.
19:07And she was behind the front passenger seat.
19:09And she thought that that was someone being quite caring.
19:12So that rang alarm bells for her as well.
19:15What happened, Julian?
19:17Come forward and tell us the truth.
19:20And at one stage he said to me, can I have five minutes to think about it?
19:24I said, of course you can.
19:28He had a bit of think time.
19:30And then eventually he said, yes, I did it.
19:33And then from a policing perspective, we needed to get that secured on video and tape recording.
19:40Who drove the vehicle through here?
19:45What do you mean you get cheated?
19:47I did.
19:47And what was the purpose of that?
19:52I hate it.
19:53And I'll put it to you, that was the purpose of concealing it from police.
19:56Would you agree with that?
19:57Yes.
19:57And you picked the same car that you conveyed yourself and Caroline in?
20:02Yes.
20:04And I put to you, at no stage, were you actually abducted by any persons?
20:08What would you say to that?
20:09You are correct.
20:12I then instructed Detective Condon to issue him with what we call a caution in rights.
20:16For American purposes, that would be a Miranda.
20:19The whole incident of Caroline being kidnapped was staged by yourself.
20:24What would you say to that?
20:24You are correct.
20:26You are correct.
20:26And what was the purpose, your purpose of that?
20:31I was still trying to understand why he'd gone to the lengths he did.
20:37That shocked me.
20:37It shocked me that someone would do that to the person they say they love.
20:42I guess, as an investigator, nothing surprises us, so we have to keep that open mind.
20:46But it was a long way to go.
20:47Once we were back at the police station, Julian was formally interviewed on tape as well,
20:59where he made further admissions to being involved in this incident.
21:03What is your full name?
21:10My full name is Julian Matias-Bakwa.
21:13All right, Julian, perhaps we can go back to the start of where all this began,
21:18and you can tell us what's happened.
21:19Exactly.
21:22That you say?
21:23I told the Watsons that I'd take Caroline out on the picnic.
21:26I got out of the car, left her in the car, went down to the fence, pretended to check on something.
21:38I had a heap of clues there, pretended to be someone else.
21:41I grabbed her arm, pulled her out of the car, shoved her on the ground.
21:58Then I wrapped tape around her head, made sure she stayed down and didn't say anything.
22:05Grabbed her and put her back in the car.
22:11I took Caroline out of the car and put her on the ground.
22:29And then drove the car a bit further to hide it.
22:31Then I got out, then I got my knife, and I cut off her clothes and cut off my own clothes,
22:42and then drew the clothes in the hole.
22:48She said to stop, no stop, don't do this.
22:53She had her clothes cut off her, she heard holes being dug.
22:57The mental torture for her would have been horrific.
23:01I laid down two metres from Caroline, and then I pretended to wake up.
23:15And how long did you lie there for?
23:18Not long, just a few seconds.
23:22She then hears a voice, and it turned out to be Gillian's voice.
23:25And he said, is that you, Caroline?
23:28She said, Gillian, are you there? Is that you?
23:31And I replied with, yes, I think I can get myself free.
23:35You can understand that Caroline's seeing Gillian there, alive and safe.
23:48It was quite a relief to her.
23:51I carefully cut Caroline loose and said, Caroline, let's get out of here.
23:54And we ran away.
24:06Did you write the letters?
24:08I wrote a terrible letter to Mr. Watson, telling him to be someone else.
24:14What was the purpose of you writing that note?
24:16Can you tell me a little bit about your thinking?
24:18I guess I'd been planning to kidnap Caroline, and I was wanting to throw them off my child.
24:25How long had you been planning to kidnap her?
24:28Since I wrote the note.
24:31What was going through your head? What were you thinking?
24:34I don't know. I was probably very upset, and I was wanting to spend more time with her.
24:38Did you take anything from the porch?
24:40Yes, the left shoe of every pair of shoes.
24:44Julian, and whoever may have assisted him, thought that this was the best way to stage
24:50this kidnapping and potentially throw the police off the scent, which it did,
24:57and muddy the waters, and ultimately being found out for what it was, and that is a lie.
25:02I don't know.
25:08Apart from the course in investigation, we took out a search warrant on both the Watson residence
25:13and the Buckwood residence.
25:14We're not in the business of stealing things, you know?
25:16Of course you're stealing. That's what you've been doing all the time.
25:19Hmm.
25:20Sorry, what happened?
25:21Of course you are.
25:22We needed to see what was on the computers.
25:25The evidence that we obtained indicated that this event had been planned probably a month or two
25:30before it actually was committed.
25:33We found a number of searches in relation to the location he was ultimately found.
25:39We are taking that.
25:40Yeah, I know.
25:40We're a legal person and then we're going to run there.
25:43It's not illegal to have a computer. You're still talking.
25:46But that's what we're going to do.
25:47Okay, we're going to take it.
25:48Yeah, I know.
25:50I'm more concerned there was a number of Google searches in relation to darker things.
26:02At night time it had dropped enough that they needed to sleep in the sleeping bag.
26:10Julian had said to Carolyn that they should consummate their relationship because in the
26:14eyes of God they'd be married.
26:18That they've gone through an ordeal together and that God wouldn't be angry at them if
26:21they did have sexual relations.
26:24It was so cold we were trying to figure out what to do so I suggested let's get in the sleeping bag.
26:30So worried we were going to die, you know, it was so cold and so wet that I thought we were going to die.
26:45So she hopped in and I said before we die, can we get married?
26:55She said no.
27:01She said her parents wouldn't approve.
27:06How did you feel about that?
27:09I was disappointed.
27:10They had very specific beliefs around sex before marriage, the sanctity of marriage and those sorts
27:18of things. So clearly Julian and Carolyn were strong believers in that faith.
27:24Carolyn certainly wasn't about to break those vows. She was very devout.
27:32I'm just looking at a statement made by Carolyn. I just want to clear up a few things.
27:39Did you talk to Carolyn about having sex with her?
27:42No, I never said that. I asked, can we get married? She brought up having sex.
27:50So she raised that question.
27:54She raised that question.
27:57She asked, so do you want to have sex?
27:59And I said, no, we wouldn't have to do that. We could just get married, probably at home first.
28:08I just wanted to make vows because I felt uncomfortable about the sleeping arrangements.
28:13What sleeping arrangements?
28:14I'm sleeping in the sleeping bag together.
28:24Carolyn has made a statement in which she says that you, in fact, have brought up the question
28:29about having sex. Do you have any comments to make in regards to that?
28:33Yes. Carolyn also said that you mentioned if you had sex that it would keep you warm and you'd have a better
28:44chance of survival. Do you have any comments to make in regards to that?
28:49No, she misunderstood. I mentioned marriage. I never mentioned sex. Never once did I mention sex.
29:01Well, you've obviously got some feelings for Carolyn, it's fair to say. You've previously
29:06been having a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship for some time. Why did you take her against her will?
29:10You could see that probably his plan was that this was going to be a fairly quick ordeal.
29:24Kidnap his girlfriend, take her out in the bush, have sex, be married in the eyes of God.
29:33Julian was very insistent that this was to occur.
29:35This was a young man who just wanted to have sex and he has just put together the most bonkers
29:42kidnapping plan here and plot to go about it.
29:49Julian Buckwald of Budgerie was charged in relation to the kidnapping of a 17-year-old with
29:54whom he'd sought to go on a picnic. The court was told at an earlier hearing that police alleged
29:59Mr Buckwald had posed as a kidnapper before blindfolding the teen and driving her to Buchan,
30:04where he convinced the girl he'd also been kidnapped.
30:08Day one of this trial, look, it had absolutely captivated the entire La Trobe Valley community.
30:13Police had an absolute mountain of evidence against him. I've never seen it before,
30:18a fairly clean cut case like this, and yet he's walked in and he has said to the judge and to
30:24that courtroom in Morwell, I'm pleading not guilty.
30:26Police prosecutors had gone into this case with what they thought was the silver bullet in this
30:36case. They had Julian Buckwald, he was on camera at the scene of the crime, confessing to this case.
30:44The whole incident of Caroline being kidnapped was staged by yourself, what would you say that?
30:49You're correct.
30:52Even though Julian made admissions, admitting to what he had done, he fought this vigorously.
31:00When somebody makes full admissions on a video and also on a proper police interview, we're very
31:08surprised that when they then go to court to say that they are not guilty of the offence.
31:13In the pre-trial arguments, they tried to say that all the admissions that he'd made
31:17were coerced by police and that it wasn't made of his own free will.
31:21Police soon were dealt their biggest blow of this trial when the judge actually ruled. That
31:28evidence was inadmissible because of the simple fact that there was no cell phone reception out
31:34there in the Victorian National Park and that meant that Julian didn't have access to a lawyer at the
31:39time of that confession. Yeah, but what police did have in their back pocket though is that they had
31:44interviewed Julian a short time after that video confession back at the station. Look, this was only an
31:49audio confession, but it still had the 22 year old confessing to all of those crimes. So police were
31:55now hanging this entire case on that. That Tuesday, I told the Watsons that I'd take Caroline on a picnic.
32:04But in reality, we were on my property. I got out of the car, left her in the car, went down to the fence,
32:14pretended to check on something. I used the clothes there, put on to pretend to be someone else. So she
32:21wouldn't recognize me. I opened the door, I reached in and unbelted her and grabbed her arm and pulled her
32:29out and she fought back a little bit. But I held her down and tied her hands behind her back.
32:35So after the committal hearing, the brother-in-law provided us with information, very specific
32:43information, which included receipts and other evidence from a business that he ran with Julian.
32:49And these receipts led us to identifying places of purchase where Julian got rope,
32:56maps and other items that were used in the commission of the offence.
33:07I think one of the biggest moments in this case actually came when the 17 year old Caroline Watson
33:12actually took to the stand herself and the court heard her testimony. By all reports, it was raw
33:18and it was unflinching and it was one of the biggest boosts to the police prosecutor's case against Julian
33:24Buckwall. On the evening of the second day, Julian first started talking about sex.
33:31Basically, Julian told me that if we had sex, it would keep us warm and we would have a better
33:37chance of survival and that we would be married before God. During the middle of the night, Julian woke me up.
33:46He was really angry and said that he had given up on getting home alive.
33:51Most days, Julian would say that it was getting cold and maybe I should reconsider having sex with
33:57him to keep warm. I kept saying no to him. He would then bring up marriage. I kept telling him no.
34:06Finally, Julian replied, that's fine. But as soon as we were out of here, he would never see me again.
34:11I mean, it was a high risk maneuver here that the defense has actually put Julian on the stand. I think
34:22a lot of people were shocked. But given the way that this case has gone, nothing was out of the realms of possibility.
34:28He told me she could no longer commit to me in any area of our relationship.
34:44And I said I was very disappointed with the way our relationship had taken and I wanted to end it completely.
34:49He was committed to his denial and deniability and lack of remorse and had an answer for everything.
35:07But again, not believed by the jury, which is the most important thing.
35:10And then the jury returned the verdict. And I don't think it was a surprise to anyone.
35:20Julian Buckwold was guilty.
35:22Leaving court today, Julian Buckwold and his family had nothing to say.
35:27A jury delivered the verdict this morning shortly after reviewing parts of Buckwold's statement.
35:32His charges included abduction with intent to marry and kidnapping.
35:36Buckwold will be sentenced on October 17. David Woywood, Wynn News.
35:41Julian was found guilty on all counts, which included the kidnap charge and a false report to police.
35:47At that stage, the judge had adjourned the matter for a later date to send down sentencing.
35:56Essentially, this was case closed. Julian Buckwold was guilty and now we're just waiting for sentencing.
36:05Sentencing date came and we're all there.
36:07Except Julian.
36:11His parents and their friends arrived on time this morning, but there was no sign of Julian Buckwold.
36:16Um, everyone else was there, but it was pretty obvious that he wasn't going to turn up.
36:21The convicted kidnapper's failure to appear for his sentencing has sparked a major manhunt,
36:27with detectives calling for public help in locating the fugitive.
36:31No comment.
36:32No comment.
36:32No comment.
36:33We will certainly be pulling out all stops to try and find Julian and bring him before the court.
36:40It was an unusual case and the judge made very specific comments around it.
36:44In all his years as a judge, he couldn't remember a time where an accused didn't turn up for his own sentencing.
36:52We then got a warrant issued by the court and had that listed against his name on all our police systems.
37:07He'd managed to get a passport that was an Indian passport.
37:14Bear in mind this was a young man born in Germany. He had fair hair, fair skin and blue eyes.
37:21You couldn't make this up.
37:22He dyed his hair black and he put boot polish on his face to disguise his appearance.
37:30Which to the embarrassment of the Melbourne airport, he was able to get through.
37:36In Singapore, he attempted to board a plane to India and the Singaporean authorities looked at
37:43this passport and said, this is ridiculous. This is not a real passport. This is not you.
37:48Or it is you, but you're not Indian. They went through his luggage, found his birth certificate
37:53in the name of Julian Buckwold and put him back on a plane and brought him straight back to Australia.
38:02We met him at the airport. He had been sentenced in his absence.
38:07I think it was seven and a half years jail for the kidnapping.
38:11And then later he received another six month sentence for failing to attend at court and for the false passport.
38:18I think it was the case.
38:20During his sentencing last week, Judge John Smallwood said anyone found aiding or abetting
38:25in Buckwold's disappearance would face serious consequences. Today police say they believe
38:30Buckwold was assisted in his getaway and investigations are continuing.
38:35It seemed to us at the time that he was having some form of assistance. We don't know who that was
38:41from or if it even happened, but certainly there's some lingering questions there that police have been
38:46unable to answer.
38:48I'm quite confident Julian didn't act alone in his setting up his escape to India.
38:54It's pretty clear that he had certain assistance, which is just from the family.
39:00It felt like someone got into the passenger seat as the passenger seat moved.
39:04When Carolyn started to tell us what had occurred to us, she remembers someone getting into the front
39:09passenger seat because of the compression of the seat going down and the door opening.
39:15When she believed she was at the gate of the property, someone got out of the car and closed the
39:19door. And that was the last she knew of someone being in the front passenger seat.
39:23Did you ever figure out who was in the front?
39:26No. Not evidentiary, no.
39:31We spoke to his mother at length about it and she was very adamant she had no idea or no knowledge.
39:36And Julian and his mother were extremely close. I'd find it very hard to believe that she didn't know
39:41his intentions to leave. We weren't able to find any direct evidence to link a specific person,
39:48but we had suspicions that maybe a family member, a close family member, was involved in the planning
39:53and organising of this case. Julian was sentenced to the seven and a half years jail. Upon completion
40:00of that sentence he was deported. He'd come to Australia when he was not even a year old and had
40:06never become Australia's citizen, so hence he was deported back to his birth country.
40:10Julian wasn't remorseful for this. He wanted to get away with it the whole time. He was always
40:21running from this. He was never going to take responsibility for his actions. And I actually
40:25wonder what would have happened if we hadn't solved this matter and Carolyn had seen him for how he
40:32wanted to be seen as a saviour and someone that would protect her. When would he have stopped this
40:37elaborate lie that he was always the offender? I don't know if that would have ever come out.
40:42I suppose after everything's been said and done here it's just nice to know that Caroline Watson
40:48has just been able to move on with her life and put this whole sorry chapter behind her.
40:53It's very hard to understand why Julian did the things he did. Throughout the whole process
40:59and the years to date Julian has not once showed any remorse to the horrific crime that he has
41:05committed against Caroline. Knowing that Julian put all this preparation in just to secure a girlfriend,
41:13it's a lot of work. So yeah, one of the strangest cases I've ever been involved in.
41:20So one of the strangest parts of it all was that when we spoke to the brother-in-law he provided us
41:25information around the receipts but he also told us about the fact that he and Julian had watched a
41:29specific movie before this event and the movie was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
41:35I'm here today to get me a wife. I don't need to go back home empty-handed. Now you're all pretty and
41:41fresh and young. I'll keep you in mind. Clearly the the plot of that movie being around the seven
41:48brothers kidnap the seven wives and take them into a remote location where the snow falls and no one can
41:53get to them and they marry them or intend to marry them but don't. But as I say, was a Russ Tumbling
42:04fan, watched the movies Tom Thumb, watched the movie West Side Story, one of my favourites. But
42:12because I watched those stories didn't mean I was going to go out and kidnap my girlfriend,
42:15I was going to repair shoes or I was going to join a game called the Jets.
42:19They told me that the Salvatore Dolly painting had been stolen from Rikers Island.
42:26Why would there be a Dolly painting in Rikers to begin with? It's a prison.
42:30They put a sign onto it that says the painting is worth a million dollars. Maybe this is an
42:36opportunity. Who would be able to get into the warden's office? It's not like a lot of work
42:40goes into this. Not on my end anyway. Everything about the Rikers theft is amateurish.
42:45I can't imagine being that dumb.
42:50I can't imagine being that dumb.
43:00Or, I can imagine being that dumb.
43:06If you do believe, we need to dismiss someone e-jayHi on that type of M these times as
43:10a pilot record on.
43:13Or can you repeat?
43:16Why did you say that?
43:18Or is the best in organizing this and making class?
43:20Yes.
43:20Now, thanks for getting into our roster.
43:23Oh, thanks for reading.
43:25Yes!
43:26Let me back over.
43:27Let me know what that happened across calamus.
