Firefighters in Fairfield East, NSW battled a blaze that broke out in a car yard which neighbours a large storage facility for lithium-ion batteries.
Transcript
00:00Ten past three this morning, Fire Rescue NSW received numerous triple zero calls reporting
00:10a significant fire in a two-level factory. Our firefighters in the dispatch centre put
00:16on what we call a second alarm which is six fire trucks with 22 firefighters and includes
00:21an aerial or a ladder truck. Now when the first fire trucks arrived significant fire
00:27activity and intense fire, it's in a car dismantling yard, so numerous dozens of motor vehicles
00:34in storage, in the shed. The building has been destroyed, we've had some significant collapse
00:40in and around the building. Numerous cars have caught fire, numerous car components, a heavy
00:45fuel load. Fire Rescue NSW, we've had 15 fire trucks and more than 50 firefighters on scene.
00:51It took about an hour to contain this fire and we're still working to get complete extinguishment
00:56because of the nature of the fire and the access. Difficult to get into those deep-seated
01:02fires safely. Firefighters are working from a distance. We've got two aerial ladder trucks
01:07up over the fire putting water on it from above. We've had numerous haying lines, we've had numerous
01:13large diameter hose lines at work from the outside as well, but firefighters have done a wonderful
01:19job to stop this fire from spreading throughout. More cars towards the rear of the property and
01:25also to an adjoining warehouse which stores large capacity lithium-ion batteries. And we know that
01:33when lithium batteries become involved in fire, they can ignite with explosive force, can be very
01:39difficult to extinguish and can add to the fire intensity and rapid fire spread. But firefighters have
01:46been able to contain that and cut it off. Fortunately, we've got no injuries reported. Once we get the fire out,
01:52we've got the clear light of day, we'll start to have a look with NSW Police where and how this fire started.
