01:16Last week, we had the most ambitious build.
01:26And we didn't win, which is not fun.
01:29I just feel I gave you too much work to do.

01:36We won last week's challenge,
01:39and I'm kind of feeling like the bar has been raised for us.

01:47I thought we were going to win the front room challenge.

01:55We were ambitious with that front room.
01:58That was supposed to be our finest moment.

02:20And clearly, there have been some ups and some downs.

02:37But this week is the biggest challenge yet.

02:45This is one of the biggest rooms in your entire property.
02:48It flanks the kitchen,
02:49so you're going to have to take that into consideration.
02:51And you've got the vaulted ceiling,
02:52so there's some opportunity here.
02:54And you must complete your great rooms
02:56by the end of the week.

03:02on the creativity of your ideas,
03:04the functionality of your space,
03:06and the quality of your work.

03:29It's where everybody spends their time, right?
03:32I am completely self-taught, so it's a lot of pressure.
03:35I want to make sure that I'm creating designs
03:38that you feel that you can achieve.
03:40Don't worry about your dad.
03:42You just keep taking these big swings, honey.
03:44Even though this is a big, wide-open space,
03:46I think you want to make it feel, like, intimate, cozy.
03:49This space is begging for a fireplace,
03:52so we'll make it the focal point,
03:53with stonework that adds a dramatic and natural look.
03:56I'll add lots of comfy seating
03:58and some fun, nostalgic accents, like a record player
04:01and a vintage coffee table with storage.
04:03Finally, let's do a wood beam on the ceiling
04:06to continue the heritage feel.
04:09And who does the stones?

04:12I was afraid you were going to say that.
04:14The second challenge, I tripped up,
04:16and Brian recognized all the trip ups.
04:18If you're going to build custom shelves,
04:22you have to be very careful on how you do it.
04:25So we have to pay attention to every single detail.
04:33Okay, so I really want this room to feel open and airy.
04:36It's like, let's create conversation.
04:39In the great room, my strategy is to have a space
04:41where everyone can gather.
04:43So I really want to open up the space.
04:46I'll brighten up the great room
04:47by replacing the half wall with an open railing for the stairs.
04:51The main feature will be a modern gas fireplace,
04:54finished with black and white panels, flanked by large custom art.
04:58We'll add lots of seating, layered window treatments,
05:02and a sleek display cabinet.

05:06Winning two challenges back to back is going to be really tough.

05:10So we really have to elevate the space to make sure the judges say,
05:14that's a winning room.

05:20Now we're going to have a nice open great room, bright and airy,
05:23just like the lady wanted.

05:30that we're designing so far.
05:31It's a lot of pressure because whatever you do in here
05:33is kind of going to dictate the vibe for the whole floor.

05:36and it's all opened up.
05:37We'll put a classic stove fireplace with a stone surround
05:39and custom shelving to continue our English cottage feel.
05:42Then I want comfy couches, a seating area by the window,
05:44and a study nook.
05:45I think in here we should highlight the ceiling
05:47with some rustic beams and an iron chandelier
05:49to complete this great room.
05:50This will set us apart from the other teams.

06:29and a big screen TV perfect for movie night.

06:34with three gigantic Sputnik light fixtures.
06:37Then I see an intimate conversation space by the stairs
06:41that is perfect for a coffee, cocktail, or even a game of chess.
06:45I'm wondering what color I'm going to do for the curtains
06:47because I think it's going to be borderline offensive.

07:11Our competitors have had two challenges.
07:14So they've learned a lot about themselves,
07:16about the other teams as well.
07:17So I think we're both really interested to see what they've taken
07:20from their experiences, wins and losses.

07:28Just making sure our bedroom and see what I thought
07:29they were going to be.
07:30Great room is one of the most important rooms in the property
07:32because it's the center focus.
07:34When you walk in, you see the great room.
07:36From the kitchen, you see the great room.
07:38It's what leads you out to the waterfront.
07:40So the fireplace will be going all the way to the ceiling,
07:43right?

07:45Definitely one of the greatest rooms in the home.

07:49Anyway.
07:59I've worked, as long as I can remember,
08:02from working at a shoeshine parlor to working at a barber shop.
08:05I've had a job since I was 10 years old.

08:09And part of that is because of my mom
08:11and what I've experienced her go through.
08:13Single mom, five boys, it's not an easy task.
08:17My mom is the quintessential hustler.
08:19Yes, she is.
08:20Always found a way.
08:21She did taxes.
08:22She was a camp counselor.
08:24His mom is like an author.
08:26And she has famous poetry.
08:29She's 73.
08:30Be 74 in a couple months.
08:31And she's one of the hardest working people I know.

10:23I'd need to know, like all the programs, and I did courses online.
10:26This piece has a lot of stuff going on.
10:30I've always been a little self-conscious, a little imposter syndrome.

10:36So you're going to get a bit of this.
10:38I'm definitely my harshest critic.
10:39Like, I want to do well for you and for myself.

12:15The great room needs some pop, so I'm going to create a painting.
12:19The painting will be a nod to the outside, the sky and the river, but with some colors that
12:26are a little more bold.

12:29Brian and Scott, they liked our bedroom.

12:35This is my interpretation of what I see outside window.

12:40I never in a million years thought I would be here, and it's hitting me harder than it's
12:45hit me because I'm painting.
12:48Shannon and I, we've gone through a lot individually, fairly recently.
12:52It's a tremendous amount of grief.
12:54A year ago, I lost my cousin.
12:57We grew up together.
12:58We go to jam bands, and we dance, and we drive with the windows down.
13:02And sit around bonfires late into the night.
13:05And we were these kindred spirits.
13:09And he didn't feel well.
13:12And he ended up at the doctor.
13:14And he was gone in a matter of months.
13:19And it shattered me into pieces.
13:24But it also made me feel a tremendous responsibility to squeeze whatever I could out of this one very precious life I had been given.
13:41And so when Shannon reached out to me about this, every insecurity came flooding in.
13:49I don't want to put my art out there.
13:51I don't want people to judge me.
13:54But he is someone who always said yes.
13:57So I just try to be more like him and live with more courage.

14:39This week, for your bonus build, you need to have a TV so that when somebody wants to watch it, it's available.

14:47But when it's not in use, it needs to seamlessly integrate into the design.

32:10I look at this as an opportunity to be able to do things that you wouldn't be able to do for a client.

35:40It felt like a penthouse suite with the view of a lake.
35:43However, when it came to the bonus build, I could not get it open all the way.

35:52What fell a bit short for me was the functionality of the space and the furniture pieces.
35:57I didn't feel like there was anywhere for me to really, like, plop down towards that fireplace, towards the TV.

36:16It wasn't quite like that, but I just wanted to encourage conversation and wanted the TV to be an afterthought.

36:50It's a very light, airy room, but again, very themy.
36:54And I think that may have been a bit of a risk.

37:10That's like the prime seat.
37:12And you put the most uncomfortable seats there.

37:23The built-ins, the distressed mantle, the beams on the ceiling, great work.
37:30But when it comes to the bonus build, the execution didn't hit it.
