00:00this more than four mile walk is a winning combination of canal and coastline and we
00:12picked the perfect day for it so it's lovely and sunny as you can see but it's far from warm i've
00:18just checked the temperature and it's hovering around about six degrees so to keep alistair
00:22nice and warm we've laid him up with a vest a sleep suit a snow suit a couple of blankets and
00:29of course his hat and mitts we put on most of his layers when we arrived and that's because
00:35according to nhs advice it can be dangerous to have too many thick coats and layers because it
00:41will mean the harness is too loose in case of a crash after walking down the narrow theatre street
00:48reach a main road turn right alongside it for 100 meters cross at a pedestrian crossing and go ahead
00:56to the bank of the royal military canal
01:02turn left on one of the paths that run parallel to the canal
01:17on reaching twizz road on the stretch we're doing go straight across to a wide tarmac path by a bridleway
01:23finger post continue past the barrier and royal military canal sign there's a choice of walking
01:30along the upper grassy path which can get muddy or the lower gravel surface track
01:38while flatter it is incredibly bumpy with plenty of potholes
01:42it was a bit of a roller coaster at points for poor alley
01:51after a quarter of a mile a green bridge offers an opportunity for a shortcut
01:55as does another footbridge a quarter of a mile further on
01:59but the full walk keeps ahead past the third bridge
02:02before passing a school and curving left onto a main road
02:18continue up the road and cross with care to the promenade at the end of sandgate bay
02:23where you're met with the seaside in all its glory
02:26along the promenade and you're treated to views of the long shingle beach ahead
02:33across the english channel on the left and on a good day maybe a sighting of the french coast
02:41all sites are alistair will have to wait till another time to enjoy
02:49continuing on the prom go past the hythe imperial hotel on the right
02:53and all the way up to the hythe and saltwood sailing club
02:57turning right on a path next to a blue metal gate with gold anchors
03:02with the light fading we cross a road to a wide tarmac track called ladies walk going past tennis courts
03:13as hive church comes into view cross over the canal and head back along the main road to the start of the walk
03:23a flat walk with no styles and apart from that stony bit in the middle entirely good surfaces and with
03:32amazing coastal views and plenty of history this is spot on for a family walk
