“Liberation Day” in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump has declared a public safety emergency and taken direct federal control of the D.C. Metropolitan Police. Flanked by Attorney General Pam Bondi, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and FBI Director Kash Patel, Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard to restore order in the capital, which he compared to Baghdad and Mexico City.

Citing “phony crime numbers,” Trump said D.C. is spiraling into chaos — and he’s not stopping there. Cities like Chicago and Los Angeles are next on his list as he vows to expand the federal crackdown.

Is this a bold move to save American cities — or an unprecedented power grab? Watch and decide.

00:00You know, when you take a look at numbers, I just saw some charts.
00:04These are different cities throughout the world.
00:07Red is, okay, the red is a place called Washington, D.C.
00:14Look at these.
00:16Baghdad is, we doubled up on Baghdad.
00:21Panama City, Brasilia, San Jose, Costa Rica, Bogota, Colombia, heavy drugs.
00:31Mexico City, I mentioned, Lima, Peru, all double and triple what they are.
00:39So do you want to live in places like that?
00:42I don't think so.
00:43I don't think so.
00:44And I think the people in this room, if you wrote correctly, you'd see.
00:48Look at the kind of numbers we have.
00:49D.C., 41 per 100,000, number one that we can find anywhere in the world.
00:58Other cities are pretty bad, but they're not as bad as that.
01:02The effort, a really big effort, the 800 D.C. National Guardsmen that we'll put on,
01:10and much more if necessary, much more.
01:14It's, you remember I said, I offered 10,000 once.
01:17Remember I said to a certain person, a person who I thought always was highly overrated, not very competent.
01:25But I said, if you need them, we'll give you 10,000 of the military or the National Guard.
01:31They turned me down.
01:32But if necessary, we're going to move service members directly to joining the Guardsmen.
01:40And that'll take place very rapidly, and that'll be done in conjunction with Pam and with Pete and everybody else.
01:46Washington, D.C. should be one of the safest, cleanest, and most beautiful cities anywhere in the world.
01:51And we're going to make it that, we're going to make it safe, we're going to make it smart, we're going to make it beautiful, so beautiful.
01:58Some of the buildings, we're going to add to it.
02:00You see what we've done at the White House.
02:02The White House is a whole different building.
02:04I do that in my part-time because it's a natural instinct as a real estate person.
02:09I was very good at that, and I was very good at fixing things up.
02:12I like fixing things up.
02:14You see what's happening.
02:15The marble floors are being reinstalled, renovated, fixed.
02:19The whole place is becoming very beautiful.
02:22We're going to be adding a magnificent ballroom, most beautiful ballroom, I think, anywhere.
02:26We need it.
02:27I would have certainly loved to have had it today.
02:30I think we would have filled it up.
02:31A lot of you are standing outside, can't get in this room.
02:34I have never seen the room like this, which tells me that you want to talk about, I mean, this was a D.C. news conference.
02:41It tells me that you want to talk about crime in D.C. and beautification of D.C., but I'm going to put that.
02:47That's easy.
02:49And I think, frankly, fixing the crime with the pros, fixing the crime is easy, too.
02:53A person who I've known for a long time, and she's been incredible.
02:58She was a fantastic, one of the best ever district attorneys in New York.
03:04She was in Westchester, and she became a judge, a very successful judge.
03:07And then she went into showbiz because she was such a good D.A. and such a good judge, tough judge, but fair, always fair.
03:15Nobody ever complained about that, but she was tough.
03:18And because of that and her reputation, she went into showbiz.
03:22So a lot of people don't, you know, they think of Janine as showbiz.
03:25Actually, showbiz was not her thing.
03:27It was, and she did great.
03:29She was on, along with a couple of other of my friends, on the number one show, and she did great.
03:36But this is what she loves doing.
03:38This is really her baby.
03:41What she's going to do is going to be incredible.
03:43And I'd like to introduce, to speak for just a few seconds on what she has in mind, what she wants to do.
03:51We're going to be appointing some judges.
03:53You know, we have some open spots, and we're going to take people, because the judges are letting killers out.
03:59They're just saying, go.
04:01That's okay.
04:02Don't worry about it.
04:03So we're putting some Pam recommended, Todd recommended, some judges that are great.
04:10Janine recommended.
04:11Janine's given me three great candidates already.
04:13We've got 10 open spots, and we can probably create some more.
04:16We need them.
