During a press conference on Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) accused President Trump of corruption for taking phone calls with business leaders who urged him to exempt their products from tariffs.
00:01Governor, you said that in January you kind of threw out a lot of the AI policy, but he had an executive order that was calling for exactly these kinds of public and private partnerships on AI.
00:14Is this an area where the two of you might see?
00:16Yeah, well, there's, look, there are 90 specific principles he supported, many of them on open source as well, which I broadly and long supported.
00:23So, no, there's a lot of area of agreement.
00:25I think there's just a, there's some anxiety, respectfully, a little laissez-faire.
00:33And my anxieties, you know, I just think it's well-founded.
00:36It's not just mine.
00:38This notion of crony capitalism, I don't like it.
00:41It's corruption.
00:42People that can afford to make a phone call, afford to get an exemption on a tariff, afford to get something no one else can get, afford to even get in the door.
00:51I've never seen open corruption like this in my life.
00:54I've never seen, you know, a thing I took for granted, you know, healthy horse pulling a sturdy wagon, I think is how Churchill described free enterprise.
01:04I don't feel it's so healthy right now under the Trump administration.
01:07I think it's very reminiscent of things that, that I read about in, in the history books going on in other countries.
01:14And I'm very concerned about a healthy ecosystem.
01:19And I'm very concerned about the status of free enterprise in this country.
01:23And so on AI, I would extend that, crypto, many of these spaces.
01:30The crypto space is a perfect example.
01:31I mean, you've never seen more open-ended corruption in that space with the president of the United States in American history.
01:38Just blatant.
01:39It's a guy who was vehemently against crypto and now he's fawning over it.
01:43I've always, we've been steady on that for years and years.
01:46Did an executive order in that space many, many years ago.
01:51He dismissed it outright until he realizes he can make a buck.
01:56So this is, this is serious stuff.
01:59It can't be normalized and it can't be overstated.
02:02And so I just, again, feel like we have a role to play in all this, some balancing, a balancing role.
02:08And we've got to push back against this crony capitalism.
