A Bangor woodworker who swapped a successful IT career for a life of craftsmanship is carving a new future with help from Northern Ireland’s enterprise support service Go Succeed.

Justin Wood NI, founded by Mark Justin in 2016, has become a sought-after workshop for beautifully handcrafted furniture and woodworking classes – drawing clients from across Ireland and even as far afield as Canada.

His journey began in his late granda’s workshop – also a woodworker – where Mark spent countless hours as a child playing, experimenting and developing a passion for woodwork. But for much of his adult life, Mark worked in IT, climbing the corporate ladder and finding success - but not happiness. He describes that period as a “mental trap,” where, despite being physically fit and financially secure, he struggled with a growing sense of unease and panic

Reflecting on his journey and how he got to where he is, Mark said: “I had a moment of clarity in my 30s - I was doing well professionally, but I was completely unfulfilled. There’s a saying, ‘You have two lives. One life, and then the life you start living when you realise you only have one.’ That really hit home for me.”

00:00I heard an expression that you have two lives, one life and then another when you
00:08work out you only have one life and that's when I jumped into Justin Wood.
00:15Hi I'm Mark Justin, I run Justin Wood, I make custom furniture and I also teach classes.
00:21I started off from a very young age in my grandma's workshop he made things and had a
00:26workshop but I ended up going into IT. It just wasn't very fulfilling and I ended up
00:30being really mentally unwell. Woodworking and making things and fixing things was
00:34just a way of like a therapy and the more I did it the more I loved it the more I
00:38was passionate then realized that you know that was kind of what I was made to do.
00:42My business is all about my craft and I'm so passionate about my craft and the
00:46business side of things always kind of falls away. Without the business, without
00:50selling things, without selling myself, without marketing myself in a correct way
00:54that it was never going to work out. So that's why I reached out to GoSucceed.
01:01When I reached out to GoSucceed they assigned me a mentor but one of the
01:04biggest things and I got a grant from it which was really helpful because I was
01:08able to buy and invest in the CNC that I've been wanting to invest in a long time.
01:13I was really time-consuming I had to design the things and make jigs and be
01:16there the whole time cutting things out whereas now that it works away in the
01:20corner for me and it always feels like I'm cheating a wee bit.
01:23I think the proudest thing is always when somebody comes to me with like they
01:27want a big dining table. The price doesn't necessarily matter because they
01:31know who I am and what my work ethic is and like that's just the best thing that
01:35anybody can do when they put your trust in your skill and your creativity in your
01:40design. I'd recommend people sign up for GoSucceed because you get assigned a
01:45mentor specifically for you to help you in the ways that you need and also there's
01:50master classes so if you are particularly interested in a certain area then you can
01:55join along those and learn more about other topics too.
