00:00My name is Tim Evans. I'm an investigative reporter and editor at the Indianapolis Star
00:18newspaper and much of my work focuses on child abuse and sexual abuse. As a journalist, as a
00:27storyteller, the Jared Fogle story is intriguing. I worked on this investigation and published
00:33several stories about Jared Fogle's activities. The public regarded Jared as a celebrity. He would
00:52go places, you know, schools. Kids would be cheering, lining up for autographs to shake
00:58his hand. So one thing I've learned, you can never outdo Jared. But Jared Fogle, he used
01:05his power, his popularity to ingratiate himself with the people he abused. Trying to raise
01:10a lot of money for the Urban Initiative for Little League and always excited to be back
01:15here in sunny Los Angeles. He came across as a very inspirational person. A guy who lost
01:26a bunch of weight eating sandwiches. And from that, he was able to capitalize and make a career
01:33and make a small fortune. Subway's business was completely transformed. They ended up making
01:38eight billion dollars or something ridiculous. You made yourself a millionaire. I think we
01:43see time and time again that fame and celebrity access to money can be a destructive mix. Jared
01:51Fogle used his popularity, set up the Jared Foundation. The Jared Foundation provided education and events
02:00for schools to talk about healthy eating, exercise. Okay, I'm here at Soldier Creek Elementary with
02:06none other than Jared the subway guy. I'm trying to get the word into as many kids as possible just
02:11about the importance of making healthy choices. The person running that foundation was Russell
02:16Taylor. If you wanted to have someone around your charitable foundation who was trustworthy and not
02:24a risk, the last thing in the world you would want was Russell Taylor involved in it. Russell
02:31Taylor was a personal train wreck waiting to happen.
02:33Jared Fogle met Russell Taylor at one of these community events where Fogle was the primary speaker.
02:45Russell Taylor was working for the American Heart Association. Taylor offered to write a speech for him. That went well.
02:56And from there it wasn't long until Fogle offered him a job leading his foundation. I think Taylor was kind of a hustler. He was smooth, more of a player, and had some game that Fogle didn't have.
03:12They were close. They traveled together often. They had kind of a double life on the road, promoting a good lifestyle for young people.
03:25And then at night they both kind of fed into each other's addictions and problems.
03:32Jared Fogle finds Russell Taylor. They became a toxic combination with each other. And that's why everything that follows comes into place.
03:44Russell Taylor came into our life when he was dating our mother, Angela Taylor.
03:51Our mom met Russell on Facebook. And they were speaking via Facebook for a while. And then we took a trip to Chicago. And that's where we first met Russell.
04:09I was about 10 and Christian would have been about 13.
04:16I just remember he was very tan and he had dark hair. He seemed nice. He was very flashy, very charismatic, very, very charming.
04:34Very.
04:35After our mom met Russell, I think a lot of good things started to happen.
04:47When we moved to Salem's Creek, I was excited. The house was a lot bigger. It felt very upper class, to me at least. You know, coming from lower middle, it was very fancy.
05:02In all the other houses we lived in Christian and I had to share a room. I finally got to have my own space and it was awesome.
05:11Russell's passion was definitely film. Our whole basement was actually themed as a movie theater. And he had pictures of classic films everywhere.
05:28And he loved making his own movies.
05:33Russell actually had his own little production company he called Blue Out House Studios.
05:38Had his own logo and everything.
05:41It was a little weird though.
05:46It was.
05:47You know, because he made a specific video of me playing softball.
05:52It's just of all these different angles of me like playing softball, you know, like some of my teammates and my coaches and stuff, you know.
06:04I mean, nobody else's parents ever did something like that. So I think to me, it felt a little weird because it was just like...
06:10It felt eccentric.
06:11It felt extra.
06:12It did.
06:13I guess like producing films is like his thing. So maybe that's just his way of like, yeah, of just being supportive.
06:23My mom's parenting changed when she met Russell from being this strict Christian woman going to church every Sunday to this partying carefree person I had never met before.
06:48It was almost awesome in a way because I felt, wow, like our mom's our friend.
06:56She encouraged us to drink alcohol, smoke weed, allowed us to have parties at their house.
07:05I'm talking like multiple bottles of hard liquor.
07:09I'm 15. She's, what, 12, 13. When you're a teenager, you want to have a good time. You want to feel like an adult.
07:22It seemed great on paper. But in all reality, it was the complete opposite.
07:34I was at a crossroads.
07:47I had evidence of Jared saying what he wanted to do sexually to children.
07:53How young? Like a nine or 10.
07:56Yeah, that'd be high. That'd be really high.
07:59It was too much for me to deal with on my own.
08:03I was going straight to the FBI.
08:06Upon arriving at the FBI office in Sarasota, Florida, I was introduced to Agent Billings.
08:21And I shared all the details and the recordings.
08:34What age seems to be the easiest?
08:36Early middle school, I'm probably one of the best.
08:39A girl that's already in the kid, you know?
08:42After only about a minute, she said, is this who I think this is?
08:48She gathered some of the materials, walked out of the room, and then three agents came back in.
08:57You know, kids are maturing faster nowadays.
09:01I know, which I love.
09:04They were not only shocked, they couldn't believe someone of his stature would say these things.
09:11They agreed he needed to be investigated.
09:14But there was a problem.
09:17What I did could, in fact, be seen as a crime.
09:22Legally, you are supposed to get prior consent from someone before recording them.
09:29The tapes would not hold up in court.
09:32It was their belief that I had broken the law.
09:43I could face possible felony charges.
09:55The only thing that would save me was to work with them.
09:59They wanted me to continue doing exactly what I was doing, talking with Jared and recording him.
10:08The only difference was that, for legality purposes, I was shown what to say in the start and end of all the recordings.
10:17Everything had protocol.
10:20They gave me no choice.
10:23I had to become an undercover asset for the FBI.
10:27The FBI needed me because I was already in.
10:38They said, you are already talking to him.
10:42You are able to get this evidence.
10:43We want you to continue doing what you're doing.
10:49It was very scary because it made what I discovered real.
10:58I think undercover work is probably one of the most important investigative tools that law enforcement has.
11:07I'm Bob Hamer.
11:20I spent 26 years in the FBI.
11:22Many of those years were in an undercover capacity investigating sex crimes.
11:27When you're undercover, you are right there one-on-one with the target of your investigation.
11:33You have them making criminal admissions, and that's much more valuable than circumstantial evidence.
11:40The calls, they became more and more revealing.
11:43Jared eventually started sharing with me in great detail what he would do with children.
11:51When Jared boasted about having sex with minors, it was beyond disturbing.
12:16Monster is too kind of a word.
12:19When Jared would say these things, how did you know this wasn't fantasy?
12:24What Jared did was not fantasy.
12:27What he said, what he confessed to, what he shared, what he wanted to do, that was real.
12:35Having that desire, that attraction to children, is not a crime per se.
12:41It becomes a crime when you act out upon that attraction.
12:46The FBI wanted evidence of names, places, where he was going.
12:55But specifically, they wanted to find the victims.
12:59How old?
13:01Like 11, 12, something like that.
13:04Do you remember her name?
13:06I don't remember her name, no.
13:10I had to play a role.
13:11I pretended to be someone who I was not, who I hated.
13:20So that he would open up to me, and I could get on tape what I needed for the FBI.
13:27You say you want to teach me all these different things.
13:31I do.
13:32I want you to teach me.
13:33I want you to learn.
13:34So I want you to tell me.
13:36When I would acquire information through conversations with Jared, I had to meet
13:59with the agents and make the drop.
14:08We met in an abandoned parking lot in the middle of the night, and it was very eerie.
14:16I look across the parking lot in front of me, and on the other side, these headlights slowly blinking.
14:35You do a handoff.
14:44And then they're gone.
14:48And then you're alone.
14:54The reason for the covert nature of these exchanges is to protect the witness.
14:59You don't want the witness being seen with a law enforcement agent.
15:04In my undercover capacity, I would meet with my case agent in the back of buildings,
15:09in parking lots, in grocery stores, to make sure that I wasn't being followed, that he wasn't being followed,
15:14and that there was no one that could observe the two of us meeting.
15:18Should Jared ever find out that I was recording him and capturing incriminating evidence against him,
15:30what would he do to protect himself?
15:33What lengths would he go?
15:35I was in deep.
15:38I was scared.
15:39I was frightened.
15:41We knew Russell worked for somebody to do a subway, because it was subway everything.
15:57It was subway bags, subway t-shirts.
16:00I think he even had subway shoes.
16:02So when we asked, he finally said, yeah, I work for Jared Fogle.
16:06You know, the guy who lost all the weight on subway.
16:09And to us, that was really cool.
16:12It was his life.
16:14Whether that was texting Jared or on the phone with Jared or emailing Jared, it was just always about subway.
16:24He traveled a lot with Jared.
16:26They went to Vegas a few times too.
16:27They went to Vegas.
16:28They went to Thailand.
16:32Russell having this job impacted our life.
16:36We got to travel more.
16:37We went on vacation.
16:39We got to really have experiences in life.
16:43We didn't really have that growing up.
16:45It was fun though.
16:46I had fun.
16:53The first time I met Jared in person was when we went to dinner with him.
16:58It was pretty nerve-wracking because, you know, he's just famous.
17:01You know, a lot of people know him.
17:02He's got a lot of money.
17:04Definitely a VIP.
17:06He seemed very shy and, you know, kind of reserved.
17:09Like, he just had this very careful personality.
17:15Now, he talked, but he wasn't very outgoing.
17:19He was more of a listener.
17:21More of a watcher.
17:24I would describe Russell and Jared's dynamic as Jared's the producer.
17:28Russell is the director making a movie.
17:31Jared was the money.
17:32Russell did the job.
17:35I think when Jared became more involved in our lives, it was almost like we had more to talk about.
17:40We had more to kind of show off to our friends.
17:43You felt cool.
17:44You're like, oh, I know all these famous people.
17:46My stepfather knows Jared Fogle and he's like our uncle.
17:50He's like family.
17:51He comes to family events.
17:52We go to his house.
17:54It just was very glamorous.
17:57Very glamorous.
17:58Without Jared, Russell wouldn't have that house on Salem Creek.
18:04He wouldn't have the job or the opportunities that he had.
18:08I definitely would say Jared had a hold over all of us.
18:12Jared would call most often late at night.
18:24You can call me anytime you know that.
18:27Thanks.
18:28All right.
18:29We'll get some sleep.
18:30I'll talk to you tomorrow.
18:31Okay?
18:32Okay.
18:33Bye.
18:34Bye.
18:35Call ending at 1 56 AM.
18:41I would struggle with getting any sleep at all because as soon as these recordings were made, I had to make the drop.
18:53It could be as often as once or twice at night.
18:58It was very difficult on my family because there was just too much going on.
19:05Mommy wasn't there as often as I should have been.
19:10The investigation, it put a strain on our relationship.
19:18Her heading out all the time and when she is home, being secretive and hiding in a room.
19:24All she told me was that she was working with the FBI to catch a bad man, but I had no idea who the bad man was.
19:31I did try asking her numerous times who I'm supposed to be afraid of.
19:36Who's after us?
19:37What did they do?
19:38What are they going to do?
19:39But she never gave me an answer.
19:42You cannot tell the children the full story.
19:45First of all, it was top secret.
19:47And you can't risk compromising an investigation such as that because you put hundreds of children at risk.
19:55Plus, it's a nightmare.
19:56Children are not equipped to understand something like that.
19:59So you have to piecemeal what you share with them.
20:05I'm not sure if she thought she was protecting me, but not giving me someone to, you know, be afraid of.
20:11It just makes me, like, want to be afraid of everyone.
20:16Every stranger is a dangerous person.
20:19I was home alone with my sister pretty much all the time.
20:24It was just very scary.
20:25Thinking there's someone after you, someone that's targeting you, that can do a lot to someone's head.
20:34My sister, she became pretty unstable and she'd have, like, outbursts and just wasn't behaving like her usual self.
20:45She became quite angry, anxious.
20:50If there was someone at the door that we didn't know, she, like, really freaked out.
20:56She just wasn't as happy and outgoing as she used to be.
21:01Conversations with Jared just got darker and darker.
21:14Just the darkest things that you could even imagine.
21:17We should try to get some child porn videos to watch together.
21:21There's this one phone call about his trip to Thailand that still lives with me today.
21:28When I heard what Jared was telling me, my soul was blackened.
21:35What is the most unique experience you've had with someone, you know, really young?
21:55I mean, it was definitely Thailand.
21:58Yeah?
21:59I would love you to go with me.
22:02We can get whatever age you want.
22:04It was just crazy. It was just needy over there.
22:07There's an agent than me to sort of choose who you want.
22:10And, you know, there's a price for it.
22:14And off you go.
22:16And you don't get in trouble?
22:18No, not over there.
22:20He would frequently see this young boy.
22:27I believe he was around 10 or 11 years old.
22:31He was very descriptive.
22:34I want to know, what excites you?
22:39When I had that little boy in Thailand, it was amazing.
22:43Yeah, tell me.
22:45Oh, it was so hot, baby.
22:47It was so, so hot.
22:50Would you ever have a little boy or a little girl as you?
22:53And Jared wasn't just abusing children in Thailand.
23:04He was doing it here in the United States.
23:07This was his playground.
23:09I mean, you can't go to Thailand all the time.
23:12No.
23:13No.
23:14I thought I got to fight some stuff over here, you know?
23:17What have you done with the little boys?
23:20I want you to explain to me.
23:22Can you tell me?
23:23What was that ?
23:25You know, it was wonderful.
23:29As soon as we hung up the phone,
23:31I would just start throwing up.
23:35I never want to go through that again.
23:38I just need a minute.
23:43I'm sorry.
23:50I felt as though I had given what I thought was rock-solid information
23:57to the FBI numerous times over the course of years.
24:02I couldn't understand what the holdup was.
24:05The reason he wasn't charged at that point was there was no overt act.
24:11When he talked about traveling to have sex with children,
24:14there's no proof that he actually did that.
24:17I had this friend that Russell was very adamant about Jared meeting.
24:36She would have been 15 at the time.
24:39So, me and my friend, we went to dinner with Jared.
24:42On the way up there, of course, Russell was hyping Jared up
24:45and, you know, making it seem like this was going to be a big deal.
24:49We got there and it was just very casual.
24:52Jared really didn't open up too much.
24:55He was very selective about the things he would say
24:58and the moves he would make.
25:00It wasn't as exciting as Russell had made it out to be.
25:05After that dinner, you know,
25:07I started hearing more about Jared's interest in her.
25:17Jared would send Russell text messages.
25:20You know, he would make comments about her breasts,
25:22about her looks and having sex with our friend.
25:27You think that was weird at the time?
25:30I just looked at it as, they're just perverted.
25:35You know, you have that pervy uncle.
25:36Like, you're like, oh, I got a pervy uncle, you know?
25:38But it was more than that.
25:41I had mentioned Jared's comments to my friend.
25:44She was very taken back by that.
25:48She got very uncomfortable very quickly
25:52and she kind of questioned me about it, you know,
25:55and was, why is he saying these things about me?
26:01I instantly felt awkward and uncomfortable
26:04because it was like in that moment
26:06that I kind of started to realize
26:08that maybe something isn't right here.
26:14listening to what Jared had to say
26:26really started to take a toll on me.
26:30I'm feeling very stressed,
26:32more stressed than I've ever been in my life.
26:35Three years playing my part with Jared.
26:39And regardless of how much information
26:42I was able to collect, he wasn't being stopped.
26:46Just really trying to reach out to kids on this trip.
26:48And now I essentially travel the world
26:50and just share my story.
26:51See that?
26:53He would be a motivational speaker at the schools.
26:56He would go on tour.
26:57Come on, give it up for Jared from Subway!
27:00He would be a special guest at sporting events.
27:03But you know what, Jared?
27:05I'm not a fan of yours.
27:07Jared used his position as a celebrity.
27:11To gain the trust of children.
27:13The FBI and I knew who he really was
27:17and what his true desires were.
27:19But the public, I had no idea.
27:21I feel like I could do anything.
27:23It affected my health tremendously.
27:33It was interfering with my ability to make a living.
27:43And then something happened that ripped my whole family apart.
27:49I kept a diary.
28:04Within those pages were times I spoke with Jared on the phone.
28:10Documenting each phone call.
28:16One evening I arrived home.
28:30There was something that was amiss and I couldn't put my finger on it.
28:36Someone had been in my office.
28:40There was a disarray of torn papers.
28:44This was one of my journals.
28:47I just started becoming very anxious because my children were the only ones in the house besides me.
28:59Come to find out it was my daughter.
29:05There were things in that diary that no child should ever read, especially your own child.
29:15She was frightened.
29:17She didn't understand.
29:21It changed her.
29:22It changed her way of thinking about me as her mom.
29:27The relationship with my daughter, because of this investigation, crumbled almost beyond repair.
29:37She had a lot of anger and she felt as though I abandoned her.
29:44I needed to stop.
29:49I needed to remove myself from this situation because I needed to protect my children.
30:03So together with the FBI we came up with an end game where we hoped to catch Jared in the act.
30:11We would lure Jared here to Sarasota for a children's party that I was setting up.
30:18It was, in effect, a fake birthday party for my son.
30:26It was a sting operation.
30:28The purpose of the sting wasn't really to have a birthday party.
30:33Should he suspect this is an FBI sting, who knows what he would do to the children.
30:39The purpose was to prove that he was willing to cross state lines to engage in sex with a person under 18 years of age.
30:49The travel proves the intent.
30:55But Jared needed to take the bait.
31:01It's my son's birthday.
31:03I am going to have a party for him.
31:05Would you come down here for that?
31:07Yeah, absolutely.
31:09That would be great.
31:11Jared became quite interested.
31:15He wanted me to invite all their friends and their siblings.
31:19I want to see all the kids looking at you.
31:23I want to see your mom checking your body up.
31:25Checking your huge boobs out.
31:27Checking your ass out.
31:29Yeah, I want to see all that.
31:31And I like it.
31:36I want you to watch me pad a little kid.
31:45Jared was very excited and was rattling off ideas on how to prepare the kids.
31:52And he was, at this point, teaching me how to groom children.
32:22Tell me, because I'll arrange it.
32:25I don't know. I'm just trying to think.
32:29Jared had a very specific strategy when it came to children.
32:35Who to select? Who was the most vulnerable?
32:40Is there any kind of personality to look for?
32:44Well, I think that girl from the broken home could be a possibility, you know?
32:48She's seven, though.
32:50Okay. Tell me about her.
32:53Jared would ask about my children's friends and then their siblings, their ages.
33:00Do I catch anyone looking at me? What do I see?
33:06During a specific phone call, he said something so shocking.
33:13It just repulsed me to the core.
33:17The content is hard to listen to.
33:20Will you do anything I tell you to do?
33:27Yes, I will.
33:29You promise?
33:30Yes.
33:33Will you let me see your kids naked?
33:35When Jared mentioned my kids?
33:45Was
33:46like a shot to the heart.
33:54They were in his crosshairs.
33:56They were in his mind, in his thoughts.
33:58How old were your kids again?
34:0310 and 11?
34:05Yeah.
34:10What if they put a camera in your kids' room?
34:12Would they be okay with that?
34:13Would you rather have in your son or your daughter's room?
34:18Oh, I don't know.
34:18That would be, you know...
34:20Which one do you think would be better?
34:22Um, I don't know.
34:26You tell me.
34:34Repugnant.
34:36He made me feel...
34:40so much hatred towards him.
34:44Well, now, Jared, you are traveling around the country talking to kids.
34:49We can just get to them and continue to get to them at an early age.
34:53You know, I speak to children all over the country and actually all over the world now.
34:57We love you, Jared!
34:59You changed my life.
35:00Jared Fogle.
35:02In my undercover capacity, I would never involve my family.
35:05Her situation, it was much different
35:08because he had already known that she had children
35:10before she actually conducted her investigation.
35:14So these were real children, not imaginary children.
35:18So it made it much more difficult.
35:24I just wanted to run and never turn back.
35:30But I had to hold it together.
35:35The sting was supposed to be a way
35:38we would finally be able to get Jared off the streets.
35:44But last minute,
35:48Jared's schedule changed.
35:50So instead of a week out,
35:53he would be there within the next two to three days.
35:58So I contacted the FBI,
36:01and they could not ramp up
36:03and be ready in
36:0548 to 72 hours.
36:08I begged him,
36:09Jared, please come on Friday.
36:11That's the only time.
36:13And
36:13he just couldn't do it.
36:17The party never came to fruition.
36:23How did that make you feel
36:24at that point?
36:26I was very frustrated.
36:28This was that chance.
36:30We had it.
36:31It was at our fingertips.
36:33And
36:33then it was gone.
36:38Even as a professional undercover agent,
36:40it's disappointing when it doesn't happen.
36:44She has poured her life into this investigation.
36:47She is emotionally attached
36:49because of her children's involvement.
36:51So when this didn't come through,
36:54it would have been emotionally devastating.
36:56The investigation definitely had an effect on her.
37:03She became more withdrawn.
37:05She slowly became less of a bubbly person.
37:10I was worried about my kids
37:13throughout the entire investigation.
37:15But now,
37:18I was
37:19worried beyond measure.
37:25They were in his line of sight.
37:27As time went on,
37:56I became terrified
37:57by Jared,
37:59by what he was capable of.
38:04So I thought to myself,
38:06what would Jared do?
38:10Jared had the money,
38:13the position,
38:15powerful players
38:17that supported him.
38:19That frightened me.
38:22If he ever found out
38:24what I was doing,
38:25what would he do?
38:30When did you start to notice
38:32a change in Rochelle?
38:35I was on the air
38:36doing my own show.
38:39Rochelle came in one night
38:40and she had like an overcoat on.
38:42She had no makeup on.
38:43Her hair was all disheveled.
38:44She was totally flustered
38:45and totally out of character for her.
38:47She wasn't bubbly, Rochelle.
38:50She said,
38:51I'm going to tell you something,
38:52but you cannot tell anyone.
38:54And the look in her eye
38:55was terror almost.
38:57Jared from Subway
38:58wants to see pictures
39:00of my kids naked.
39:01And if I don't,
39:02he's going to kill me.
39:04My first thought was,
39:05she's got to screw loose.
39:07And that's when she hit me with,
39:11there's black vans following us.
39:14It's just classic schizophrenia.
39:16There's vans following me.
39:18They're after me.
39:18They're after me.
39:20I thought it was so far-fetched,
39:23so out of the ordinary.
39:24I said,
39:25either she's crazy
39:27or she's telling the truth.
39:29As much as I tried
39:42to keep it all together,
39:43I was pulled apart.
39:47The emotional turmoil
39:49that it took on me,
39:50I had breakdowns.
39:52I had no one
39:59to talk to.
40:06Sorry.
40:09My life was spiraling
40:11out of control.
40:13And he
40:14was still out there.
40:17I won't forget
40:23that day
40:24that Russell
40:24got arrested.
40:26That is the day
40:27my life
40:28turned upside down.
40:31Russell Taylor,
40:32the former executive director
40:33of the Jared Foundation,
40:34was arrested,
40:35accused of possessing
40:36and producing
40:37child porn.
40:39Russell Taylor
40:40is accused
40:41of recording
40:41underage girls
40:42without their knowledge
40:44to produce porn.
40:47I
40:49was in high school
40:50and I
40:53seen on my phone
40:53I had a call
40:54from my mom.
40:55That was weird.
40:56I don't usually
40:57ever get calls
40:57from her during school.
40:59So I
41:00called her back.
41:02Hey mom,
41:03I heard of seeing you call.
41:05She said,
41:05I can't talk right now.
41:06Why are you whispering?
41:08She said,
41:08Russell's been arrested.
41:10What do you mean
41:11he's been arrested?
41:13She said,
41:13I can't talk about it
41:14right now.
41:15Just look it up
41:16on the internet.
41:17I just put
41:18Russell Taylor
41:19Indianapolis.
41:21And
41:22first thing
41:23that pops up
41:24big
41:24was
41:25Russell Taylor
41:26pedophilia,
41:28child pornography.
41:31It said
41:32possession
41:32of child pornography.
41:34I didn't really
41:35know what that meant.
41:37So I'm thinking,
41:38okay,
41:38like,
41:39did he have
41:40like some kind
41:41of picture
41:41or video
41:42or something
41:43of like
41:44a little kid
41:45that maybe
41:46you shouldn't have.
41:47But it was even worse.
41:51A search
41:52of Taylor's home
41:53in April
41:53revealed more than
41:54500 explicit images
41:56of children.
42:00That's when
42:01we realized
42:02the people
42:04you think
42:04are the closest
42:06to you
42:06are actually
42:07the most dangerous.
42:08because
42:10what we found
42:11out was
42:12pure nightmare.
42:15there.
