Atlanta Shooting: DeKalb Officer Shot Down Near Emory Campus; Suspect Also Targeted

A tragic shooting near the CDC and Emory University in Atlanta claimed the life of DeKalb County police officer David Rose. The 33-year-old was killed while responding to an active shooter at a CVS on August 8. The suspect was also found d*ad, with no civilian injuries reported.

00:04Today is a very dark day in DeKalb County.

00:08We announced the loss of the life of one of our very own DeKalb County police officers.

00:51This is the type of shooter.

00:57And at this time, there have been no civilian casualties.

01:04But this was an active shooter incident.

01:07The shooter is now deceased.

01:09The campus is, there are no threats on the campus currently.

01:14He's a white male, and he has a, you know, he is a known person that may

01:21have some interest in certain things that I can't reiterate right now with any

01:26confidence until the investigation is fully conducted.

01:30It's definitely one that we have to pay attention to.

01:34Mass shootings, active shooter scenarios should not become the norm.

01:40We have a number of individuals in this country that have access to high-powered

01:46weapons, and for individuals with those high-powered weapons that may have mental

01:50challenges, or those individuals with high-powered weapons that are angry when

01:54they choose to use those weapons in a way that harms multiple people.

01:59We have to put an end to that in our society.

02:02So this is something we do have to have a national and a state, a full

02:07conversation across the nation and across the state of Georgia.

02:10Just giving an update and some additional information that the mayor provided.

02:13So this afternoon at approximately 4.50, the Atlanta 911 Center became aware of a

02:17report of an active shooter that was occurring at 1600 Clifton Road.

02:21This is right at the intersection of Clifton Road and CDC Parkway, immediately

02:25in front of the CDC campus.

02:27Officers from multiple agencies responded from the campus, across the region,

02:32from our federal partners and our state partners responded to the scene.

02:36Officers arriving found a critically injured DeKalb County police officer that was

02:40down.

02:40He was immediately extracted from the scene and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

02:44Officers could still hear gunfire occurring inside the CVS drugstore that is right

02:50there at the intersections.

02:51Officers moved quickly to attempt to find the shooter and to neutralize the threat

02:54to the community.

02:56We later found the shooter on the second floor of the CVS.

02:59He had been struck by gunfire.

03:00We do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was

03:03self-inflicted.

03:04He was removed.

03:05We do believe there was a single shooter and we do believe that single

03:08shooter is deceased.

03:09Today is a very dark day in DeKalb County.

03:12As we stand before you during the loss of one of our beloved officers.

03:19This evening there is a wife without a husband.

03:25There are three children, one unborn without a father.

03:30There is a mother and a father as well as siblings who also share in this traumatic loss.

03:45And I say to all of those who serve as frontline responders and to our officers that we are here

03:55here to support you and to this family and to my DeKalb County family during this time, let's

04:02join together to give this family the support that it needs during this traumatic loss.

04:08But what I can say is with profound sadness that we announced the loss of the life of one

04:14of our very own DeKalb County police officers.

04:17This officer responded to the call as he did, as he was trained to do.

04:22During that incident he received gunfire and he lost his life in this incident.

04:28At this time we are not going to release his name with respect for the family, but we will

04:32provide his name and photograph at a later time.
