00:00For over three decades, the SA-80 rifle family, specifically the L85A2 and later the L85A3,
00:16has served as the standard assault rifle of the British Armed Forces.
00:21When it was introduced in the 1980s, the SA-80 represented a leap forward for the UK's
00:28infantry capabilities. However, despite multiple upgrade programs, soldiers have consistently
00:35voiced concerns about its ergonomics, weight, and handling. The bullpup design, while offering
00:43a compact length, posed challenges for left-handed shooters and rapid shoulder transitions in combat.
00:50The rifle's early reliability issues, though largely resolved in later variants,
00:56left a lasting impression. Over time, elite units such as the Royal Marines and Special Forces
01:04began fielding Colt Canada C-8 carbines, designated L119A1 and L119A2, especially for operations
01:15requiring more modularity, lighter handling, and quicker adaptability to different combat
01:21environments. This gradual move toward AR-pattern rifles within certain units signalled a shift
01:28in thinking. The UK needed a modern, fully ambidextrous, and highly adaptable service rifle
01:36to match the operational demands of today's warfare. Recognising these needs, the Ministry of Defence
01:43launched Project Hunter in 2021. The objective was clear. Procure an alternative individual weapon
01:52system that would complement and, in certain roles, replace the SA-80. The requirements were ambitious.
02:00A NATO standard 5.56x45mm rifle. AR pattern for maximum interoperability with allies. Fully ambidextrous
02:12controls, a high-quality suppressor, advanced optics, and a modular rail system for accessory mounting.
02:21This was not just about replacing a rifle. It was about providing a complete weapon system optimised for
02:28modern combat, urban engagements, and joint operations alongside NATO partners. Multiple international
02:36manufacturers submitted proposals, including Heckler & Cock, Sig Sauer, FN Herstal, Daniel Defence, and Knight's
02:45Armament Company. After extensive trials, the KS-1, Knight's Stoner 1, emerged as the winner. In September 2023,
02:55the UK officially announced its adoption as the L-403A1, marking the most significant change in British
03:03small arms since the introduction of the SA-80 itself. The KS-1 is an AR pattern rifle derived from Knight's
03:12Armament's highly respected SR-16 platform. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, it features a 13.7-inch
03:24cold hammer forged barrel with distinctive dimpling to reduce weight and improve heat dissipation.
03:31Weighing around 3.1kg unloaded, it is significantly lighter than the SA-80, even when equipped with
03:39its full optics and suppressor package. The rifle's overall length can be adjusted with a collapsible
03:46stock, ranging from approximately 82cm to 87cm, making it adaptable for both close-quarters battle and
03:57longer-range engagements. Unlike the SA-80's bullpup layout, the KS-1 uses a conventional layout,
04:05that many soldiers find more intuitive, especially when transitioning between shooting shoulders or
04:12working in confined spaces. One of the standout features of the KS-1 is its fully ambidextrous lower
04:19receiver. Magazine releases, bolt catches and safety selectors are mirrored on both sides of the weapon,
04:27giving equal advantage to left and right-handed shooters. This design also enables smoother
04:34tactical manoeuvres, where switching shoulders to maximise cover can be critical. The rifle's URX-6
04:42free-floating handguard provides M-lock slots for mounting accessories, while protecting the barrel
04:49and ensuring accuracy. The trigger is a high-quality two-stage match unit, offering a crisp break that
04:56improves precision shooting, something especially valuable when engaging targets at extended ranges,
05:04or during deliberate aim-fire. The KS-1 is delivered to UK forces not just as a rifle, but as part of a
05:13complete AIW system package. Each rifle is equipped with a Knight's QDC-NCQ-PRT suppressor, reducing both
05:22sound and muzzle flash, which is invaluable for stealth operations and preserving the shooter's hearing.
05:29The optic setup is state-of-the-art, a Vortex 110x low-power variable optic for flexible engagement
05:38distances, paired with an Aimpoint Acro P2 red dot sight mounted at a 45-degree offset for rapid close
05:46quarters target acquisition. Backup iron sights, a tactical sling and optional vertical foregrips complete
05:54the system. This combination allows soldiers to seamlessly transition between short-range urban
06:01combat and longer-range precision fire without changing their weapon configuration. The rifle's
06:08modularity is another major advantage. Being based on the AR platform means it is compatible with a vast
06:16range of accessories and upgrades, from alternative stocks and grips to different barrel configurations.
06:25Maintenance is straightforward, and spare parts availability is assured, thanks to its design
06:31being compatible with many NATO allies' rifles. This interoperability not only simplifies logistics in
06:40joint operations, but also enhances battlefield cooperation, as ammunition, magazines, and components
06:49can be readily shared between allied forces. In terms of capabilities, the KS-1 offers improved handling,
06:58lighter weight, and better balance compared to the SA-80. The suppressor significantly reduces the
07:05weapon's visual and acoustic signature, improving survivability in close engagements. The advanced
07:13optics and improved trigger contribute to higher hit probability under combat stress. Furthermore,
07:20the rifle's reliability in harsh environments, dust, mud, and extreme weather has been proven in testing
07:27and in service with other users of Knight's armament rifles worldwide. Deployment of the KS-1 began
07:35with elite units. The Royal Marines' future commando force and elements of the Ranger Regiment
07:42were among the first to receive the new rifle. These units are often at the forefront of UK overseas
07:49operations, from maritime security to special operations, and their feedback will help determine
07:55how widely the rifle is issued. The current contract covers around 1,620 rifles, valued at approximately
08:0515 million pounds, with an option to purchase up to 10,000 rifles over the next decade for about
08:1390 million pounds. This phased approach allows the Ministry of Defence to assess performance in active
08:20service before committing to full-scale replacement of the SA-80 across the Army. Looking ahead, the KS-1
08:29represents a major step in British small arms modernisation. While the SA-80 will likely remain
08:36in service with many units for years, especially in non-frontline roles, the adoption of the KS-1
08:44marks a shift toward a more NATO-aligned, modular, and user-friendly rifle platform. As operational demands
08:52evolve, with greater emphasis on rapid deployment, joint operations, and urban warfare, the flexibility
09:00and modern features of the KS-1 will likely make it a preferred weapon among those who carry it into the
09:07field. Over the coming years, as Project Hunter transitions into wider initiatives like Project Greyburn,
09:15the UK military will decide whether this rifle becomes the new standard for all infantry units,
09:21or remains a specialised tool for elite formations.
09:25In conclusion, the KS-1 is more than just a replacement for an ageing rifle. It's a symbol
09:32of how the UK is rethinking its approach to equipping soldiers for modern combat. With its balance of
09:39accuracy, reliability, and adaptability, it aligns the UK with its allies in both capability and
09:47compatibility. Whether in the hands of a Royal Marine boarding a hostile vessel, a ranger regiment patrol
09:55operating deep behind enemy lines, the KS-1 stands ready to define the next chapter of British military firepower.
