President Marcos said the Philippines is shifting away from a “car-centric” transport system, stressing that past reliance on private vehicles has worsened traffic and limited mobility for many Filipinos.

In the third episode of his podcast aired Thursday evening, Aug. 7, the President recognized that the lack of reliable public transport has forced people to buy their own vehicles, hence contributing to the traffic gridlock. (Video courtesy of PCO)

00:14Is this a signal of our broader national transport policy?
I think yung tawag mo, car-centric.
00:28We've taken it as far as we can.
00:30And we've seen examples around the world.
00:36walang public transport, walang bus, walang train, walang subway.
00:40Siyempre, lahat kailangan bumili ng sasakyan, bibili ng motor, bibili ng auto.
00:45Kaya nakaka-traffic ng husto.
00:47So that's why we are continuing to make it more efficient.
00:52We are continuing to add assets, not just additional lines,
00:57which of course we are doing.
01:1010 years old already, hindi pa nagamit.
01:12Ngayon pa lamang nagagamit.
01:14Inayos-ayos.
01:20So that will be added capacity.
01:24Pati mga kalsada, ganyang gawa natin.
01:27Ngayon lang tayo, magkakaroon na tayo ng subway.
01:30Ngayon pa lang, this is the first time that we have a subway here in the Philippines.
01:34These are solutions so that life will be a little easier,
01:39so that life will be more convenient, going to work.
01:42Ang usually sa planning, dapat ang commute should not be more going to work,
01:48at saka pag-uwi, dapat hindi yung one way,
01:51hindi dapat lumampas sa isang oras.
01:54That's the goal.
